Is The Canon R5 Still Worth It In 2024???

I'm a bit late to this party (story of my life), but I just took delivery of my R5 yesterday. I had considered the R5 Mk ii, but it probably would have been a bit of overkill since I shoot no video at all. (If I'm really being honest, the R5 is probably overkill, since I'm just an avid hobbyist, nothing close to a pro). I've had the R6 Mk ii for a few months, and absolutely love it. Looking forward to putting the R5 through its paces. I've got the 100-500 and 200-88 lenses, as well as my beloved 24-105 EF, which I will never, ever get rid of, and which works beautifully on the R6 Mk ii via the EF > RF adapter.

One thing I am surprised you did not mention is the R5 MK II is supposed to be announced sometime this year, which will most certainly drive down the cost of the R5!

Speak for yourself. my cheap ass loves the fact everyone is selling off their EF lenses! I can use them on my Canon Cameras and my GFX 50s!!

I JUST picked up an R5 refurb off Canon website for a very good price! I cant wait! I mostly shoot small birds so the ability to crop I hope will help me.

@@TodayIFeelLike haha no its fine, its $2500. I just checked and it hasnt sold out yet! The R6 mark ii is 1800 too I know a lot of people like that one as well

The thing that scares me about Canon refurbs is that clearly it was returned because it didn't function properly and needed to be repaired. I bought a lens from Canon once that did not function correctly. I returned it three times, each time they had it for over a week. The lens never worked properly!! I finally gave up and returned it for a refund! Get my drift? Are these refurbs items that they never could fix correctly, so folks asked for their money back? So they give it one more shot and sell them as refurbs??

@@alansach8437 That's good question I don't know I've never had that issue with any Canon gear but I can understand your concern if you have. I would say if you're willing to take the chance try it and shoot the heck out of the camera and make sure it works and if it doesn't do like you did before and return it. I wouldn't even go through the repair process though I would just straight up return it. I've actually bought gear before and it didn't work right and they wanted me to go and have it repaired and I said no it's within my return period so just give me a refund and I'll buy a new lens. I'd much rather do that than go through the repair process and then end up having to fight for a refund later.

@@alansach8437 I trust Canon refurbs over other companies just because its their product and has to pass multiple inspections. Luckily every refurb I’ve ever gotten has been practically brand new. However I’m aware some people will have different opinions based on their own experience.

Don't shoot Canon but I have used the R5, IMHO the best value top tier camera on the market, the one downside is the lack of 3rd party glass and RF glass is pricey

I wholeheartedly agree RF glass is crazy expensive. When third party glass comes available will use the camera much more.

It's no less a camera today than it was when released. It was way more camera than most users would ever use. That remains true.

I think it's still one of the best cameras on the market today and if they removed the 30 minute record limit I would say it's the best.

I absolutely agree that the R5 is still worth it in 2024. I have both the R5 and R5C since they both came out (they back each other up) and the main reason I went with Canon is because of the RF "L" series glass. The RF "L" series glass is super sharp, the colors and rendering are stunning, Image stablized, low to no chromatic aberrations , reduced flare and the weather seal is outstanding. Camera bodies come and go every 3-4 years but the lenses stay around for 10-30 years and accounts for 90% of your image/video if not more. The sensor of any camera just captures what the lenses pass on. If you don't have sharp lenses you images will be soft regardless of what camera body you have MP of the sensor . The prices of the RF lenses are about the same as Sony GM lenses and I think the RF "L" series are the best lenses out there.

I wish they allowed for 3rd party lens because I just can’t all of that expensive RF lenses but I still want high quality glass

@@TodayIFeelLike Im sure they will eventually. Canon is a Lens company first (Higher Margins on glass than they do with bodies). I traded in my Sigma EF mount 24 mm & 35 MM Art lens for the canon RF 24mm and 35mm STM since there is no RF L series primes in those focal length yet. I needed the extra pins on the RF lens so Auto IRIS on my R5C could work. I found the STM lens are on par with the 2 Art Lens (EF Mount) and a tad bit cheaper, smaller and lighter too. Hopefully Canon releases a RF L series 24 mm and 35 primes or let 3rd parties in.

The one thing I really really don't understand is why everyone persists in the statement that the RF lenses are the only one supported by the EOS R series cameras. There is the ER-R convertors that allows the R-series cameras to use the ER lenses they already have. If so, then why will the 3rd party ER lenses not work with the EOS R-series cameras???

Keep in mind that the Canon RF lenses all have IS built in where Sony lacks on this. I love Canon glass and that IS helps so much with stablilization. The IBIS on the R5 is outstanding. I have the R5 and 2 Sony A7SIII's. I grab my R5 over the Sony anyday.

Note to viewers: The video review is titled for "2024" but the video appears to be made for 2023. He mentions several times through the video 2023. The video still may have some information and relevance you can still use, just be aware the video appears to be meant for 2023, and some things mentioned may already be in the next version.

It was made at the end of 2023 and published in 2024. The info was the same so I didn't feel the need to re-record just to say I filmed it in 2024. It was really about answering the question not about when the video was filmed. But thanks for pointing that out I see how some could be confused or concerned about the relivency.

I think when you see a great picture on the wall, no one asks what kind of camera it was taken with! They only ask who the photographer was!

For 99 % of shooters the R5 or equivalent is all you will need for a few years to come. Greater specs are meaningless and just make the purchaser happy but it won't improve your pictures to an extent you or anyone else will notice. Don't believe the hype save your money on upgrading or buy one of these either new at a great price now or even better on the used market. Investing in good glass is however worth it and this is where you will notice the difference.

@@mikem6796 I haven't had any overheating issues since I updated it to the latest firmware actually I think it's been a couple of firmware updates since I've had a problem.

so is it the top of the line canon camera body with all the bells and whistles, one that is still being produced as we speak worth it in 2024. Is this video even necessary ?

But the question of the video is not if this camera is the best for "such photo style" but rather is it worth buying in 2024 altogether. Being the top of the line and still current the answer is yes. Its not a comparison video or a guide against different gear that are newer, more advanced or with different features. it would be different to ask for a worth buying video of a mark 6 considering the other options available within and outside Canon that are newer and with different prices/specs. But the R5 sits a the top already. @@TodayIFeelLike

From what I see nothing about removing the recording limit in 2024 on the Canon R5. I'm still waiting to buy this camera to this day, Come on... Canon.
