I finally jumped in to mirrorless from a Nikon D850. I played with a little R10 an was blown away with the bird eye AF. I consider it a game changer. So I sold all my Nikon gear and jumped in to Canon RF with an R6II and the RF100-500 + 1.4 Extender. Wow! Couldn't be more happy and my keeper rate went way up. Now I just need to be patient for the R5 Mark II.

It's so easy to follow and your ability to give concise descriptions of things before delving deeper into subjects makes every video interesting and easily accessible. I have some photography training but nothing wildlife related, so the past few weeks I've been out practicing every day. Sometimes I'll even pause one of your videos and go out for a session, inspired by what I've seen you do. Keep it up!!! I've taken my R6m2 out for the first show I shot this weekend, and it's a ton of features to learn from the RP I've been shooting with for the last 3 years. Instead of turning off the subject tracking, I keep my camera's AF area in "Whole Area AF" and set my back button focus to "Set AF point to center". Not sure how effective that is for you in the tall grass, but it's worked pretty well for me at the show. I even tried this out on my old RP, and I'm kicking myself for not having done this years ago, although I'd have to press the back button focus twice instead of once to get it to track. Thank you for this video! I was a fan of your sensor readout video, and was glad to know what the R6m2 readout is. I may not be a wildlife photographer, but your observations and opinions are very informative. Cheers!

I have 2 of these now. I have had 90d and r7, and tried r5. I have one with rf100-500 and one with rf800, and must say they give me the best shot ever in the nature. R6 mkii have a fantastic focus system you can trust on, and a very fast readout speed at about 14 ms. Whatever people think about more mpx we know that 1dx have only 20 mpx and delivere a vert high standard. With 24 mpx and the prescision and speed r6 mkii gives, I really love this camera. I think, finally Canon did it. A "midtrange camera in the high end" very close to the real proff where every body can get the feeling of taking proffs photos.

Thanks for a thorough review as I understand the advantages of the R6ii better now. I am receiving this camera next week, already ordered on delivery and excited to use it. I really like how you show the stickiness of the AF and the various subjects and eye detects. While not a perfect camera, it sounds vastly superior to my older Canon 80D in many ways especially tracking and low light compared to APS-C. Thanks for posting this video. I am also shopping lenses, so I will see if you have reviews for Canon FF.

Thanks for the awesome review! Personally, i think the 24MP is not that bad, it's simply a compromise. Lower MPs do have a few unspoken advantages, and if you dont need to crop that much, it can be really nice. As a hobby-photographer, honestly, i appreciate the files not being too big, since that just increases copying time, nescessary storage space on the cards and on hard drives and so on. Considering the R6m2 works perfect without needing more expensive CF Express cards, i do really appreciate that it should only take roughly half the storage space and half the time for copying compared to a 45MP camera. So, for me, 24MP is just perfect (i'm currenly shooting with a 10MP Nikon 200D) and i'll be definitely getting the R6m2!
@77dris2 жыл бұрын
I posted above that I compared dozens of R6 and R5 images shot identically with the best RF lenses, then output using Adobe Camera Raw to 45 MP (most people don't realize you can do this) then layered the images and did a "blind" comparison. I could not tell the difference between the R6 and R5. I was about 50/50 with my guesses (viewed 100% zoom on a 5K monitor). Then I used the "enhance" feature on the R6 files then output again using Adobe Camera Raw to 45 MP and the R6 files looked sharper and more detailed (especially on the portraits). I saw no scenario where if I printed (or cropped) the R6 files were not as usable as the R5 files. At one point I was starting to convince myself that MP is now basically a "scam" once you get over about 20 MP on a 35mm sensor.
@surfdancer7772 жыл бұрын
@@77dris hi Dris, I didn’t know about that either. Could you tell me the steps to output to 45mp? I’d love to try it.
@sklay782 жыл бұрын
@@77dris I kinda feel the same way.... 45+ MP sensors are nice... if you're shooting with the best primes and need massive blow up capabilities. Otherwise, you're just showing off the failings of less-than-perfect glass. Properly focused with a decent lens, I can take half a 24MP image and make a 12"-18" print of it that looks just fine. Canon's best bodies were never MP monsters, and I always assumed that was the case because if you had $6000 to lay down on a body, you probably had the money to buy lenses to get the reach you wanted instead of cropping in.

Good news about the R5 as i own one too. Is that canon is expected to release a major firmware update for the R5 to keep it going this year before they release the R5II.. and it will get rid of the record limit as well, and have all the AF improvements and additions that were put onto the R6II. It was also mentioned there is expected to be an "above and beyond" feature added aswell. This feature may be a test feature for Canons R1 camera. Im excited for this! Could be around April / May for release.

Excellent review. I purchased and returned the original R6 and bought the R5, as cropping was critical in my case. Your review shows that Canon has listened to customer feedback and improved the camera. Good work.
@harrison00xXx2 жыл бұрын
The R6 mk2 is definately more compelling than the R6 was, but in the end, the R6 was a crippled R5, and the Mk2 is now a just less crippled R5 with some features the users liked and wanted hard. Wold be the price the same, it could be really nice for some and even me, but i think the price is a bit too high (+400€ in europe over the Mk1) Im pretty happy with the R7, got it brand new for only 1100€ body only since the kit for 1400€ was too expensive for my taste.

Hello my friend Duade, first of all congratulations once again for an excellent detailed video... And that everyone praises you and rightly so!! I just bought the R6 and soon they launch the R6 mk2. I watched all of your video and honestly I would only trade it for 2 factors which would be the battery life and the improved autofocus system. I never needed a high frame rate when shooting, I got used to and perfected my eyes in these 29 years photographing birds, I don't need that many frames.... But the difference in noise is relatively higher on the R6 Mk2 and that made me think about would switch to the R6 mk2. I really don't know if it's really worth switching now. I would have to sell the R6 minga to buy the Mk2 and that would not be an easy task.... I am saving money to buy the 100-500 RF and for me it is more important than changing the body.... Again the Canon put perfumeries on the body just to attract buyers.... there are many things to really improve....

One possible use for the digital TC: As a birder I oftentimes use my R6 + 100-500 + 1.4x TC to take record photos of very distant birds. Even with this combo I sometimes end up with photos where the bird is tiny in the frame. What I recently have began to do is to use my setup as a “poorman’s” spotting scope by pressing the magnifying glass button once or twice (5x and 10x) to study very distant birds through the viewfinder. The problem is that once I press the shutter button it goes back to normal “1x” view so to speak and photos don’t have that added digital zoom. It looks like with the digital TC I might be able to both view and take record pictures with an additional digital zoom.
@johnsheehy41922 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as JPEG is acceptable to you. I don't think his quick dismissal of the mode is fair, even though I agree that it is gimmicky as it is implemented and described. When you look under the hood at what the Digital TC is, it is really a 2x and a 4x crop mode in addition to 1.6x, but treated as a faux-TC with gratuitous upsampling so you have 24MP, just like with a real TC, and crippled with JPEG-only output. As gimmicky as it is in the "teleconverter" concept, it does give you the viewfinder experience of a 2x and 4x crop mode, and any metering or AF advantages which that may impart. And, if you are happy with a combination of your lens and a 1.5MP or 6MP capture, you get 4x or 2x the rolling shutter speed, compared to the same angle of view using the entire frame.

Excellent detail review. Best on KZbin. Thank you so much. Happy to hear that the sensor readout speed has been improved to R5 level. But IMHO, rolling shutter is still a problem with that speed. 40FPS with SD card slot just doesn't make sense. Personally, waiting patiently for a Canon 45MP+ stacked BSI sensor...R5 MK2, R3 MK2 or R1.

Thanks Simon, yes, Stacked BSI is the future with mirrorless to avoid rolling shutter and I'm not sure why we didn't get a CF Express B slot, it would have made sense. Given the improvements in this body I suspect the R52 or R1 will be pretty epic. Cheers, Duade

Love your review videos Duade, best on the internet. I purchased an R7 2 months ago but i shoot a lot of low light sports and the noise is just horrible. The mechanical shutter is clunky and the rolling shutter in electronic mode is awful. Finally given up with it and trading it in for an R6 mkii so this review particularly interested me. I have seen some fantastic shots of wildlife taken with the R7 but low light sports, forget it. Controversial but in my opinion my 7D mkii was better apart from the tracking. Keep up the great work.

Thank You again for an excellent video review. My Canon bodies are now R6 and R10 but I am considering to upgrade to R6 ll. The biggest reason may be the better af which works wider with rf 800mm f11 and like with my R10 the af can now track birds eye with spot af. Compared to my Sony a7 mark IV Canon has less customisable buttons which is a bit annoying - and of course Sony 7iv has these 33mpix. That is why I have R10 because 7,7 in crop mode is not a lot. In dark finnish winter I have been using with R6 and a7IV with iso 25600 and after Topaz the results are reasonably good. It was very nice to know that with r6ll you have wider af area when using rf 800mm f11 - it is a very sharp lens and I use on bright conditions......

Loved the video, great explanation, thank you. I’m going to buy a R6 II or r5 coming from the Eos 7D and i mainly like to shoot actions, so i think i might go for the R6 II and get maybe a playful lens for when i travel (like the 24mm 1.8 or the 50mm).

Thank you for doing this review Duade. I think this is the first legit review of a R6ii out that is a full on review and with a production version at that! Your use case in this video of wildlife is right in line with one of my favorite subject matters so that helps too LOL. My R6ii arrived yesterday and I believe I'll be making the button assignment that you did at the end one of my first moves.

Wow!! As always, suuuuper in depth video. I think you may have convinced me of my next camera body. Seeing those rolling shutter timings, it definitely explains why, in a photo that i took of a Red Bellied Woodpecker with electronic shutter, his wings looks like he's hugging a softball. I thought, either the woodpecker's wings are rubber, or this electronic shutter is making some hilarious images. Shutter was 1/1250, shooting w an EOS R. The slide explains everything! Again, I appreciate your work here on YT. You've been a HUGE help in my wildlife photography journey. Have a great day and weekend, sir!

Excellent video - you manage to convey all of the information in an accessible and interesting way. Nerdy nature photography has never been so fascinating! As an existing R6 owner, I can't justify the upgrade - but watching your evaluation here of the 2 cameras (and some of your other vids) has taught me more about how to get the best from my R6. Thank you.

Wow! What an exceptionally crafted review video! Thank you very much for all your efforts in creating it. Must have taken ages. Far beyond the best quality and most enjoyable review I've seen of the R6 Mk ii yet. Well done Duade! Lastly, all amazing photos too, but got to say, that last one of the bird looking back at you between its own legs, was an absolute cracker haha. Extra bonus to see you're a fellow Aussie. Keep up the great work mate! 👍 Take care 🙂

Really great review Duade! The R6 Mark II is very temping for me. I think I will likely end up waiting for the R5 Mark II. What I really want from Canon is Pro APS-C body. Either something like the R6 with a fast APS-C sensor or an R7 with a better EVF, buffer, and a faster sensor. Nice if it was a stacked sensor. If I was in charge it would have the quad pixel AF from the OM-1. I love my RF 100-500mm and that is keeping me from selling my Canon gear. I could easily sell my R6 kit and R7 kit and have enough to buy the R5 MarkII when it shows up. But I can imagine that I’d still pick up the OM-1 more often. The weight is a big factor for me. As small and light as the R7 and 100-500 I still notice some shoulder soreness after carrying it for few hours. I can carry the OM-1 with the PL 100-400 all day with no soreness.
@davepastern2 жыл бұрын
you can expect quad pixel AF to be ONLY on the R1, as will the better EVF and screen imho. Canon's cripplehammer is a powerful tool *wink wink*. The R5 II will probably not even be BSI, let alone stacked, will probably have a price hike of at least USD $500 over the original R5. I reckon the improvements will be limited to DPAF v2 like the R3, dual CFExpress slots and dual Digic X processor, with a standard 61mp CMOS sensor in play. I guess time will tell if my suspicions will be correct. For me, the R6 II is a poor upgrade option if you own a R6 - 4mp is a poor upgrade, I suspect that 40fps with rolling shutter means poor usability imho, and i don't care for video at all, so the video upgrades are meaningless to me personally.
@Duade2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, yes it will be interesting to see what the R52 brings. The R62 really just ironed out the few quirks of the R6 making it more refined if that makes sense. Cheers, Duade 👍

@davepastern2 жыл бұрын
@@Duade yes, it sure does. The R6 II is a very nice upgrade from a DSLR, there's no 2 ways about it. But, as an upgrade from an R6, it's poor imho. Canon must be having real issues with it's sensor fabrication process, since they are pushing non BSI, non stacked, low mp (vs the competition) sensors consistently in their products. And, their products are much higher priced than their competition too. I'm still to watching your video (have it bookmarked to watch) - ended up watching Gordon Laing's review part 1 and some of his part 2 on the EOS R3. Yes, I am thinking about getting the R3. I got a nice red backed fairy wren last friday and tuesday :-)
@Duade2 жыл бұрын
@@davepastern Thanks David, yes, it is interesting to see where they go, the R62 sensor is still very nice and performs well but stacked is clearly the future. I am not sure if there is an affordable stacked FF sensor on the market yet, I guess with time it will come. I am looking forward to the R52 and the R1 in the upcoming years, well done on the Fairy-wren, would love to see them again. Cheers, Duade

Great video! I've just bought an R6 mkII and I was struggling to figure out how to stop it tracking in spot focus. Yours is the only video I've found which explains this. Just a point on the 5fps electronic shutter - not everyone is a wildlife photographer! Having a silent shutter is going to be great when I'm shooting weddings etc but I don't need the high fps for this. I'm looking forward to getting out and trying my new RF 100-400, which I bought for an absolute steal (with a huge trade-in bonus on a 29 year-old lens!), so I was pleased to hear that you were impressed.
