From a german who has in the meantime seen many old castles: Most castles who do not have a drawbridge now, had one during the middle ages. Stone bridges were build later when drawbridges and medieval castles in general lost their importance, especially if they instead were used as palaces. Example: the Veste Coburg in Coburg.

The Veste Coburg was a proper castle! It was build during the middle ages in order to defend against any enemy and actually never got conquered. Only later some parts were added.
@grasscheff7 жыл бұрын
You are right, the location was used in the middle ages, it was never conquered due to its sneaky passage to the city of coburg and its deep fountain for water supply. However, nearly all the fortifications were built in the 19th century and have nothing to do with the mediveal appearance of the Veste. Don't mean to offend you, though. Where are you from? Well, if I were a city planner (and I had imagination designing cities in city simulators) in a Medieval Fantasy setting, I would imploy anti-air turrets that are essentially oversized Chu Ko Nu's, or repeating ballistas, not to mention net firing catapults as well. I guess these guys didn't think about fairy tale creatures until the time the book starts. What I did know is that these guys actually manufactured anti-air siege equipment later in the movie after the siege. I would therefore have anti-air siege, protecting the fortress from the sky, inside the walls, protecting the fortress from the ground. Anti-air turrets are a popular military norm these days.

I think that third or first gate house out on the bridge was actually a checkpoint King Miraz set up to toll or check common visitors, much like checkpoints in airports, where they identify people and what they are carrying before they even get to the main gates, so that little not well defended gate was more for the function of the castle as a secure seat of government rather than to help during some siege.
@xy14687 жыл бұрын
This! 100 %. I think Shad is trying too hard to find perceived flaws in castles. This is no proper outer gatehouse, the castle has 2 already. That's a checkpoint with an easy to open gate to 'greet' legitimate visitors to the castle. As a first line of defence it would be absolutely pointless, even with a portcullis, as you would be cutting off your guards from the castle as soon as you raise the drawbridge. Which would be the first thing you do when you see an army attacking (or at night when you lock down your castle when it get's dark)
@brianzmek72727 жыл бұрын
also there is the concern the in universe that was a fairly small outcropping so putting a larger structure there may have been an issue as well.
@koreancowboy422 жыл бұрын
I feel like the first gate should've been pushed alittle more forward a total of 10 to 20 guards could possibly maintain that position maybe if there was double doors to help prevent any one from throwing or even shooting arrows through the holes of the metal grading. And the draw bridge would've been left down so they maintain the position of securing that first gate considering it'll be difficult to even try taking that first gate back since the defenders would have to lower the draw bridge and if the enemy is already positioned more men on the bridge and that captured gatehouse there's no way of the defenders being able to do anything except starve. And I also think Shad is being too harsh about the towers that are facing the back of the castles because I feel like those are more of lookout towers where some guards are positioned to watch for enemy movement on the other sides instead of the fronts plus if any of the attacks are crazy bold to try climbieng the freaking rocks.
@Armaggedon1857 жыл бұрын
The utter lack of machicolations is a failing for sure, especially on those gatehouses (which really should be fortified more heavily), but for most of the castle I can see why the corbels would be purely be aesthetic. I mean, who would they be shooting at on most of those cliffs, nesting birds?

Having now watched the video: 1 Thank you for not shouting. 2. I believe I can offer an explanation for the soldiers incompetency from my own pre-vid research. They're not a dedicated combat force. They exist for policing the people, and deterring war. Remember, the Telmarines think the Narnians are extinct, which means the only people they have to worry about are themselves. Thus, the various lords each maintain their own unit of troops to deter anyone else from moving in. We see in the movie that they're infighting is mostly cloak and dagger, so the soldiers themselves do very little fighting that isn't aiding in assasinations. They were out of their depth during the castle battle, with circumstance, superior numbers, and the castles design as you pointed out, giving them the advantage. If you or anyone else has any other thoughts or anything I'm welcome to hear them, but that's the gist of what I've found when examining the Telmarines.
@urgutsvadar58907 жыл бұрын
Based on Miraz's machinations demonstrated in the film, I think a reason he had men in the bailey to risk being shot at was to increase casualties on his side. A larger death toll on his side allows him to present the Narnians as a graver threat, arguing for the necessity of a centralisation of martial forces under him (as King).
@nikolai607 жыл бұрын
Very true, but that only explains them being down in the bailey, things like them failing to respond to seeing Narnians and raising the alarm have nothing to do with orders, and just on the individual soldiers inability to react.
@nikolai606 жыл бұрын
I rewatched the scene, and the men in the bailey were just responding to the alarm that was sounded. Miraz did give the order to fire for the reason you stated, but when the alarm was sounded the first people readied ran into the bailey, instead of the walls. Miraz only saw his opportunity once the melee had already started, they actually show his realization as he first walks out onto a balcony.

This design actually seems safer to me than regular machicolations.
Actually a possible reason we don't see the machicolations because they are too low down. They're actually inside the towers which could be viable. They are clearly at least 10 feet down from the ramparts, so its likely that they could be on the inside. yes it means you need double the archers, but considering the dangers of this world it would make some sense to have entirely internal defenses with small holes to attack through (though if that were considered we'd likely see some sort of attempts to have more air defense.)

@100thmonkey7 жыл бұрын
Have you done a video on how a fantasy castle could defend from such air attacks?
@neurofiedyamato87635 жыл бұрын
@@100thmonkey I think that's going to be very hard. The best AA weapon I can think of for the time would be basic generic archer fire and scorpions. Ideally some sort of self-loading weapon that may have been theorized but I have no idea if any were actually built or just artistic drawings of the time period for weird contraptions. AAA warfare is a complex element in on itself. For the weapon, you need a high velocity, fast firing, all angle loading, fast traverse/elevation, and high elevation. High velocity is important so you don't need to lead as much, which is VERY important since there's no complex aiming mechanical let alone electronic computers back then. Fire control is absolutely essential in AA warfare, as evident in WW1 and WW2 which had abysmal air defenses no matter how many guns you slap on. Fast firing is important since if you can't hit accurately, then you just throw more stuff at it. And part of that is being able to load at all angles. You don't want to lower the weapon and then raise it again, which waste precious time against fast flyers. Fast elevation/traverse is required to be able to keep up with flyers, so no to giant ballistae and trebuchet. Although they MIGHT be good at long distance by throwing out large amount of smaller rocks to take on a swarm of flyers. But after the first volley, it is entirely useless. High elevation... well it's self-explanatory. This is not even getting in to the fire control required to hit a target flying in 3 dimensions.

Luka Ten Dam I have a question about that castle, and of the "abandoned" castles in Europe: who owns them? Are they public property or property of the state? Or are there still descendents of the original owners? Can anyone buy those castles or not? I wonder because I'm aware that in Spain and Italy there are some medieval castles and villages for sale either by their private owners or by the state, but I just don't understand what are the rules for owning a property like that: it's both huge and historical, so I imagine the taxes are either huge or almost non existent
@autumn17656 жыл бұрын
It does depend on the castle, but most of them in the UK are owned by the National Trust or English Heritage organisations that focus on preserving historical sites. Corfe Castle is owned by National Trust, meaning that in you can't buy it yourself. I don't know too much about mainland Europe, but i assume it is a similar case.
@1207rorupar6 жыл бұрын
Luka Ten Dam thanks for the clarification! For me it's kind of weird seeing the ruined castles near towns and not having a way to know who owns them, as in the few cases I've seen the owner may vary quite a lot, sometimes the nearest community is the "owner", sometimes a particular person or the "state" via a government institution. Also seeing the state of disrepair in some cases is mind boggling, especially the villages In Mexico as far as I know all archeological sites are owned by the state, plus several of them are in jungles so it doesn't surprise me that several are in very bad state (in fact I'm surprised that not more are in bad shape)

So this castle is great, but not impervious to DRAGONS, because NOTHING is IMPERVIOUS to DRAGONS!! ps. Shad, do you have any castle concepts for anti-dragon castles? And are dragons possibly the reason Skyrim has so many dungeons and burrows? Because the early Nords could have decided it was safer to live with their venerable dead in underground cities than go on the surface and be slaves and ... eh ... sustenance for the dragons above, and that's why dragons employed humanoid Dragon Priests for taking over those underground cityscapes to enslave the people down there which resulted in the massive dungeons of draugr we get to run through as the Dragonborn in Skyrim in the present era.
@aero55607 жыл бұрын
KainusGulch I'm an asshole, and I'm into my lore for The Elder Scrolls, and so I'll be harsh: of course not. The Nord's had monuments built and great cities. You may think Whiterun is "Big" but go back and play Arena, and you'll find that Riverwood has its own Duke. The warrior nords were taught by Paarthurnax the way of the Thu'um, where they rebelled against the dragons. The draugr are there because of a curse (I think). And yes, there were underground places, but they weren't cities. Unlike in Skyrim's watered down lore, Nords are big, burly and stupid. They would've thought they could intimate the dragons.
@KainusGulch7 жыл бұрын
I have never played the early games for very long. I barely get out of the first dungeon or two before the graphics and awkward gameplay mechanics frustrate me. So you may be satisfied with your well-rested case. Interesting about the duke of Riverwood. BTW Whiterun is puny, and one of the reasons I wished they'd had the guts to make proper cities and proper countrysides in Skyrim. There isn't enough population or industry or crop growing for Skyrim to survive as an actual country. I understand their desire to make a game that could run on most PCs of the year it came out, but I agree a bigger,better or at least slightly more realistic job could have been done. All that said I like Skyrim, story and world, and I won't stop playing it for quite a while. Hope the next real elder scrolls is as good. Hopefully it's even better.
@aero55607 жыл бұрын
KainusGulch im gonna have to disagree with you when you say Skyrim has a good story. Morrowind's Story is amazing. Oblivion's is great. Skyrim's is a watered down generic piece of bullshit. Anyway, they could've done what Dark Souls had done with the world building, making everything not in your area extremely low poly or even just a skybox, but have no load doors. That would've worked.

Big long bridges to high castles are nice, but what if the enemy stayed on the other end, painstakingly smashed/dismantled the bridge in half, and then waited for those inside the castle to stave to death? One way on means one way off as well. Edit: Nevermind, but still, what could one do against this tactic? Edit: Thanks for the whisper, I'm actually wearing headphones. :P
@wismsgre7 жыл бұрын
The thing is that they didn't even have to smash it. There is a town at the other end. With stone buildings. In my opinion that is the biggest problem with this castle. Because an army will just have to wait there. Because they now have lots of mini-castles there. So if they would not be atacked by an other army, they could just wait there forever. In a real situation they will put some distance from the casle and the town, or at least the town would be usually made out of wood structures. Or it wouldn't be at all, because it's safer to have a clear area around it in case o attack (even if in the day to day life is not that practical)
@grayscribe21257 жыл бұрын
Not much you can do against this tactic. That was always the question. How much food and water does the castle/city under siege have? If they have enough to outlast the attacking armies... well, that's when they usually tried to storm it despite the causalities.
@doktorcool37407 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no way to make a successful sortie across that bridge. What the defenders need is one or more secret exits at the bottom of the rock on which the castle is standing. I.e. some path down (stairs, or better something a horse can use) leading to a hidden exit. Of course that exit needs to be a) well disguised and b) well protected. Some source of water would also be nice. We probably can assume some sort of cistern, but a well of some sort (again probably starting near the bottom of the rock) would be helpful to endure a long siege.
@LouisKing9957 жыл бұрын

I would either destroy the bridge and completely wipe out the castle as an important location (If the only way out is a small postern gate, from which you have to climb down the mountain, the castle and it's defenders aren't a huge danger to you if you control the sorrounding lands. It's not like cavalry could easily come out of that to raid.) or simply man the village, block the bridge and trap the defenders inside. A unit of spearsmen, stakes, barricades and crossbowmen on the roofs and in the windows of the village would make ground meat out of anything that tries a sortie.

Have you considered going back to Witcher 3 and doing Kaer Trolde? I recently replayed the game and had your videos in mind, and the castle looked good and defensible, but probably not perfect.

Actually, Shad, If you watch closely when the minotaur headbutts the gate, he's ramming it with the top of his head and his horns are pointing down. The gate is still inexcusably flimsy though.

Maybe the smaller crenelations were ornamental pieces on the towers on the far side of the castle from the bridge. The only attacks that could come on that side would be aerial assaults where merlons would not be useful.

Hey Shad I am a working a video game and specifically on a fantasy game I have a general idea of the area surrounding a castle that I'm designing for the game but wanted some help on making sure the castle was functional and realilistic. So here it goes for what I have as is, The castle is known as Truehorn Keep built partially into a mountain side with the path into the actual castle being a small cave in the upper reaches of the mountain. The several guard towers appear out the side of the mountain as to be look out towers. The city or really town is built on the southern side of the mountain with a eastern lake front. The path up to the castle's entrance (the cave) is within the northern part of the town. So that's the idea I have so far as for other defenses I don't have much of an idea and am still only in the conceptual stage of the art so any input any can give would be helpful thanks!!

Couple of things I noticed. First, when the Narnians attacked the castle, they made one HUGE mistake. You can thank G. A. Henty's book "In Freedom's Cause, a tale of Wallace and Bruce," for my knowledge of this mistake. And it bugs me every time I watch Prince Caspian. Now when they raised the portcullis and lowered the drawbridge, what the Narnians should of done, is to bring a cart or something like that from the town to place under the portcullis so that if dropped, it could not drop all of the way. (Like with the monitor only non killable). Also, some of the Narnians should of had a duty to either lock the drawbridge in place, or to cut the chains so that it could not raised. This way, in defeat or victory, there is a way for reinforcements to get in or to retreat. Also, an idea for that first gate house. Is it possible that it was placed there as an easy gate to close in the case of a rushing enemy. Say people are fleeing from the town with an enemy close at their heels. The light gate could be quickly closed and give the garrison time to raise the drawbridge. Thus the purpose was to slow down the enemy to give the garrison time to prepare the main defenses. I think the main reason troops rushed out in the courtyard was because in their surprise their only thought was to stop the enemy. And you will note that when they first rushed into the courtyard there were only the heroes in the courtyard. Thus, if they could have reached the gatehouse before the Narnians got there, they could have used the opening to stop the Narnians. Finally, I love your content! I would greatly recommend you reading G.A. Henty's book "In Freedom's Cause," or any other of Henty's many historical fiction books. Several of which take place in the Medieval time frame, and involve the defense/attacks of many castles and cities.

This video was especially fantastic (and the intro was positively amazing)! Keep up the good work! Although there is one more thing that could have been covered that could make the castle an almost perfect castle. The separated side towers protruding on either side of the castle are both amazing and terrible at the same time, and could give this castle an amazing advantage. First, the bad. Both towers are especially small and relatively far away from the entrance, so I am not sure how effective archers or crossbowmen would be on those towers. Also, the tower on the right has towers on the tower! How on Earth would that be more effective?? The towers in their current state are practically useless. Next, the good. What would need to be done to make these towers perfect would be to make the towers themselves larger. By doing so, it might be possible to place trebuchets on the top of the towers. By mounting trebuchets on the towers, it might be possible to take out large siege equipment and possibly large battalions of troops as well. Also, given the height and distance from the entrance, it would be very difficult to take out the trebuchets from the bridge or village, and it would be especially difficult to mount a long-term siege to starve out the castle. Why? Just imagine trying to set up a long-term siege against a castle with trebuchets having perfect range and distance to fire at your troops, and not being able to do anything to counterattack without getting close to the castle and risking exposure to further attack. Furthermore, if the invaders wanted to set up any large and heavy siege equipment, the trebuchets could easily destroy the equipment before they could be used. The only problem is that there are buildings in the village close to the bridge, which provides cover to the invaders, although it also makes it difficult for the invaders to attack anywhere other than the bridge. The only other addition I could think of making to the castle (although it would be extremely difficult) would be to make a passageway from the castle to the bottom of the cliff, so as to flee from invaders in case something terrible happens. That way, say if Royalty is being housed in the castle and needs to escape, they could access the bottom of the cliff in order to get a great amount of distance from the invaders. All in all, with multiple drawbridges, proper gatehouses, machicolations, and trebuchets on the towers, I think that this castle could be well near perfect.

Also if you look at the far end of the bridge away from the castle, it looks like it has two guard houses flanking both sides to the entrance. Maybe not a proper gatehouse but it is a bit of a buffer to the bridge for added defense.

wondering if a single approach is in fact a weakness? would make starving the castle out so much easier as you wouldn't have to divide your forces at all. a secondary and tertiary entrance would make it possible to get messages or a sortie out, and get supplies in.

Hello Shad, I have a quick question: Has it happened historically, and if not - what do you think would happen, if instead of trying to take over such a castle ( well defended, with only one access point - the main bridge ) an opposing force decides to destroy the bridge. It seems like an obvious flaw to me, but I am no expert on the subject. If it would be stupid, and thus not done, why?

To be fair, the crenelations that aren't big enough may be on some of those towers that you could never realistically assault, so they would be there purely for decoration to keep the appearance of the castle consistent around the entire perimiter.

Well, with a tiled roof, for starters. It could be seen as a bit of a failure not to account for flying creatures that definitely exist in that settings. If they have access to concrete (like the Romans did), they could make domes, which I imagine have higher resistance against impacts.

well they did not consider any flying creatures since they believe the "Old Narnians" to be extinct for centuries.

This was awesome! As a HUGE Narnia fan, I gotta say I really enjoyed this. This castle is definitely cool, and really looks more like it was built to be defensible, but I'm not surprised that you found something wrong with it (and I mean that in a good way - the people who create these movie castles should pay attention to your videos IMO). When Caspian rebuilds Cair Paravel, he should put you in charge of the building. :D

I know you ahve a thing for machicolations, but most of the towers with fake ones didn't need them, because they're looking out at the cliff, mostly. But yeah, the one on the gatehouses would've been useful.
@thomasmcgraw87787 жыл бұрын
Towards the beginning when you were talking about how they managed to get the defensive bonus of being on a hill without the disadvantages of day to day climbs. I got to thinking that wouldn't it be better to have an inclined bridge to the gatehouse to make the approach of the battering ram harder
@mistermister22917 жыл бұрын
Brilliant intro. rotlmao! Also, it would make sense to send soldiers down to the main courtyard to hold off the attackers and give the archers time to work. Pulling those men back would have given the attackers an even easier time taking the bailey. *But they could have held the walkways where the archers were. Well, then the archers become useless and those minotaurs would have messed those defenders up.

Oh yeah, this was a particularly great castle review even by your standards Shad, thanks! :) There are a lot of very 'weak' castles in games & films, it was great to see a review of a relatively strong one. It probably helped a lot that within the film the castle's role was to get a lot of attackers massacred, so it had to be pretty strong, with stuff like the great location and the real drawbridge(!).

First off, I've been watching your channel for a long time now, as well as following the adventures of (It's) Tabletop Time (please come back soon) and I love it. Thank you for producing great content all the time, my favorites are your series on what weapons fantasy creatures should use and the castle reviews obviously. But I was wondering what you think about eastern style castles and their designs. Seeing as they have a completely different philosophy behind them, I thought it might be interesting to examine on your channel. Also, I'm really curious to see what your 'perfect' castle design would look like.

There is one additional question you failed to address: How well would this castle survive a prolonged siege? - Certainly there is enough room for ample food larders, but what about fresh water? Again, enough room for massive cisterns, but cistern water can go stale if it isn't rotated/replenished often enough. - Also, that long narrow bridge as a central access point is a double-edged sword. The defenders only have one way out to mount counter-offensives and that narrow bridge will prevent your defending forces from leaving en masse. The besieging army could cut them to ribbons as they march across the bridge. Comments? Opinions?
