Is the CD Revival Inevitable?

Well, I've done my bit for trying to revive the CD. In the last 2 and a half years, I have bought 5402 CDs, essentially the collection of my dreams. I had spent 20 years without any physical media at all (I sold off all my physical media in 2002), but I decided I wanted to look at the cover art and read the little booklets again, and have something visceral that I could hold in my hands. I didn't consider vinyl for a moment. I am old enough to remember the introduction of CD's in the mid 1980s, and they were a godsend. No more warped records, no more surface noise, no more getting up and flipping the disc every 16 minutes, no more sound deterioration with every play, no more lack of definition. The CD was my favorite invention of my lifetime, and their benefits are still massive over vinyl. Much of my new collection was purchased for $1-$4 per disc (the rarest ones cost about $50-$60, but that's not uncommon for vinyl). I hope others will discover CDs and save the medium (although I have enjoyed snapping up rarities that the hipsters refuse to even look at since they are so 'uncool'). My purchasing will slow a lot now that I have gotten the bulk of what I wanted, but I expect to be purchasing occasional CDs for the rest of my life.

I know cheap CDs can be easily purchased these days, but wow, 5000+ in over 2 years is hella impressive. I'm still in my 20s, but when an old friend of mine passed away (he was 71), I inherited his small CD collection-around 200 CDs that he had collected since the 80s. That made me realize how precious these CDs are; they can last a lifetime and hold sentimental value for us. Since then, I've purchased a few CDs from my favorite artists. I also write down the date of purchase and the location of the shop on a note, which I then put inside the CDs. It's a way for me to preserve not just the music, but also the memories associated with acquiring each album.

Thank God, I never did get rid of anything in my collection!! I still have all the vinyl, the CDs, even the cassettes that I and my friends recorded as teenagers back in the late 80s!! Granted, a few cassettes have been lost over the years, plus I have cramped my wardrobes with boxes with CDs, but I'm still very happy I still own EVERYTHING I've purchased over the last 34 years!! I only have a few original cassettes, a couple of LPs and a few CDs from my youth. I have replaced most of them now I think though and it feels great to have them back again.

There are scores of people that purged all their vinyl in the 90s, and bought CDs at higher prices than they paid for their vinyl. And then what do they do in the 2010s? They purge their CDs to buy back all their vinyl, at…You guessed it! Higher prices than they paid for their CDs!! PURE MADNESS!!! STUPID!!!

I got rid of perhaps 90% of my CDs because they took up too much space and I don't own a little palace... Streaming was so convenient and I was too busy to listen to CDs. I am now carefully buying more CDs as I have recently purchased a good quality CD player and own two good quality pairs of headphones.

I was surprised by the difference in audio quality when I compared CD to streaming on my Denon system. And that sound quality is my main reason for continuing on with CDs. An alternative is to buy HD downloads and that will be just as good (uncompressed flac or wave), but it's nicer to have that physical copy with art and notes to show for the money spent.

Big fan of the channel so far dude! been rebuilding my CD collection from scratch this year after being lost in the streaming wilderness, just over 100 cds, nothing major so far but I feel a much better appreciation for anything ive purchased and display on my shelf than an album ive streamed, enjoyed and then rarley listened to it again!

Agreed. One more reason: You can buy CDs without fearing that they won‘t play. Old vinyl often has scratches and new pressings are bad in too many cases, some are really dead at arrival. CDs are a relatively safe affair. And: new jewel cases cost you a few cents, LP covers often are irrepably damaged. - Thanks for the video and greetings from Berlin, Harry

Hi Harry! Yes that's a very good point. I have CDs from the early 80s and they still play like new. It's much harder to keep vinyl like that and if you play it a lot it will start to wear out even if you keep it in good condition.

Exactly. And even if a CD has become unplayable cause of scratches (on the bottom side), you can often repair them. 1 tiny scratch on a vinyl album and you're stuck with it forever.

This is still the case, the new Rolling stones CD is LOUD and compressed to shit. while the vinyl can't handle that so the dynamics are there. Still, I am a CD guy

@@Harjawaldar The labels just use the same transfers. We've always had the issue with Motown/Stax stuff where single versions were different than album version and the reissues are never marked. That's the problem with reissues but if you like 60's-70-'s music and want it on cd, it's inevitable.

They are going up as you speak. I was in a local record store yesterday, in Boulder, CO they now have used CDs with much more selection, use to be $3 to $5 are now from $8 to $20!

CDs manufactured from 83-93 roughly are exact dynamics as the vinyl counterpart (most of the time), those cds are absolutely worth collecting for any music lover of any genre as these were taken usually direct from the analog recordings.

I understand why somebody would prefer cds over vinyl. It’s cheaper, smaller, etc, but I just love holding a vinyl record in my hands. It’s so big, which is fun to me. They are much more expensive, but I find that when I buy a record, I value it much more because I paid more for it. I will only buy an album if I really love it, which allows me to appreciate the album even more. I know the debate about which format sounds better, which I still think vinyl sounds better even though research has proven otherwise (i dont know maybe it’s a psychological thing). To me there is just much more of an authentic experience that I don’t feel when I play a cd.

Increasingly I see tracks unavailable on Apple Music as, I guess, they’re slogging it out over ownership rights. Classical music has never ditched the CD and I suppose that’s due to an older demographic listening. I have noticed charity shop prices for CD’s and DVD’s increasing so I think you might be right. I am 20 and have childhood memories of CD’s and discs. I think my generation is so used to having everything at ease at our fingertips that physical media is beginning to seem endearing and charming to us, vinyl is carrying the torch currently but there’s no doubt that CD’s and possibly cassettes will join the club in due time

Got both .I prefer cd's [easier to store handle] . As far as sound goes you got to have a decent cd player .I got a couple of Rega's and a Meridian g.06 and the cd's sound as good as my turntable [ Luxman pd 264 ]. Also you can buy a lot of cd's for the price of a record.

I have prolly thousand plus cds but I have become a stickler for finding the best mastered versions. Sometimes that means I buy the same cd multiple times to find the right ones but I think its worth it. I just sell off the ones that are obviously poorly mastered.

I've never got rid of any of my physical media. I'm only a few years older than you and got my first CD player at the dawn of the 90s, when I was about 15 or 16. Before that, I'd been a vinyl fan, who would record everything on to tape. This gave me the best of both worlds, and the ability to enjoy music on the go through a walkman, and later in the car when I started driving. However, records weren't without their problems. Jumping records used to irritate the hell out of me - as well as the inevitable deterioration of quality you get through repeated plays. CDs certainly aren't the miracle format that we were promised (no jumping, indestructible nonsense), but they do have a cleaner sound, they don't deteriorate in quality with repeated plays, they're small enough to be portable, and obviously take up less space. Given that you can easily rip them to a digital format really does make them the superior format in my book. Fortunately, they've still been available through Amazon for all these years, so aren't dead yet.

Yeah I think you're on to something. CDs were like magic to me when I first got my grubby mitts on them, and I think part of the appeal over vinyl and cassette is the ease at which good sound quality can be achieved. I've not had great success getting vinyl to really perform despite a fair effort. The same effort put into CD players, DACs etc will yield better and more reliable results. I'm off to raid the charity shops!

Superbe video. When you are very old and move there are no room in nrw homes for hundreds of 78 45 LP CD DVD cassetes and 8 tracks plus hi fi equipment...sighs so almost 95% I had give or recicle. Houses are smaller in Patagonia Argentina nowadays sighs

I have just bought a Denon D-M41 mini system so I can play all my CDs that I thankfully kept even after I binned my last CD player years ago. It's great being able to play them again! I'm now looking at increasing my collection.

i really love CD; i personally think optical disc is the best of both real and digital worlds. it is something tangible that allows true ownership and collectibility, but very easy and versatile to transfer into our computers and phones; ripping a losless CD is super easy and straightforward. optical media, by far, is the Equilibrium of traditional and modern way of life. thats my opinion. 😊

It’s hard to say if and when the revival will happen, I’d go along with your argumen. For the past 15 years I bought all CDs for 50c to 1 euro each of bands I had an interest in, and still find occasionally great finds for cheap. Though it has to be said I used to come across whole collections dumped in charity shops, not anymore and a lot more shrewd CD collectors / flippers now picking up stuff, and there are much less good CDs in the charity shops. Five years ago in Ireland you could pick up 3 CDs for a euro! Sometimes 10 for a euro. That’s rare now. Some charities selling badly scratched for €2

I keep a decent mix. I have about 400 CDs & 400 LPs… There are a few favorite bands I buy on vinyl from a nostalgic perspective or I want the specific older mix vs a remaster on CD The sound is great on both and honestly getting great sound on vinyl is chancy… CD never disappoints. CD for value…. I bought the entire Judas Priest CD catalogue for about $7USD each vs $30-40 EACH for a vinyl in good shape…

I always liked the album art of physical sound media: cassettes to the least extent, CDs more so, and vinyl the most due to its size. Although I own releases on all three formats, the large majority are CDs. I don't even play the vinyl because I have all of those releases on CD also and since they look so nice that I don't want them to deteriorate. Even their superior artwork can get ring wear, seam splits, and water damage. My solution is owning some great books of 12' x 12" reproductions of famous album cover art. These let me enjoy the full-sized artwork while appreciating the matching CDs' noiseless sound reproduction. In my experience, CDs are much less likely to deteriorate except for an occasional scratched disc which I'll replace.

I started collecting records sometime 2018, which while maybe not "before the revival" was definitely very early on into it. I'm almost exclusively into Japanese music and buy from second hand marketplaces there, the prices were so fun back then. I'm big into anime and I bought most of the soundtracks I own for 20-40$. They go anywhere from 100$-1000$ now. I wanted to complete my collection, but over the years it became less and less attainable. Now I'm selling off and just focusing on CD's instead. Not that I'm complaining, since collecting vinyl made me a veritable fortune.. I think you're on the money about a revival, it's inevitable. I've switched over to CD's maybe about 2 years ago and I'm having a blast, so much great stuff for so cheap. I've also learned my lesson from last time and am buying all the rare and expensive stuff before the market goes crazy 😆 About 2000 CD's in and I'm on the verge of getting another IKEA closet that will fit an extra 1500-2000. The amount of albums on CD vs records is just incomparable. The Japanese genres I'm interested in are particularly barren record wise, the amount of stuff available on CD is easily a thousand fold that of vinyl. I've always enjoyed discovering niche or otherwise forgotten music, ripping it and uploading it on KZbin. I suppose it was always only a matter of time before I'd run out of things to discover on record. Dumpster diving CD's is one of my favourite activities, which I think is one of the major factors that drew people to records originally. Anyways, hopefully we get a little more time to buy what we want before then.. Good luck 🫡

75% of the cds I buy are over $10 and 25% are over $20. Japanese and British imports, out of print releases, and indie cds sold out of someone's trunk 30 years ago all abound. There are levels of collecting. There's the mainstream chart stuff and then everything else. Most stuff that hit the charts from 1988-2008 are common as on cd. If you collect hard bop jazz from the 50's or classic soul, rock, or doo-wop, prices can sneak up there especially on deluxe editions in decent shape. If you could have bought it at a mass market retailer, it usually isn't worth much. For instance, Etta James Millennium Collection will almost always sell under $5 but her box sets, Kent reissues, and Hip-o select discs will hold their value.

I love CD's. I've found some great ones in charity shops and all for bargain prices. I also volunteer in one, so sometimes I get first pickings but 95% of what we get donated is "mainstream".

Volunteering is an excellent hack to get first dibbs, love it! Yeah most of the stuff around here is the Sugarbabes and Robbie Williams but I can usually dig out a few treasures from the 3 or 4 charity shops in my town that stock CDs. The hunt is part of the fun for me!

my car has a usb hub, so I rip my discs to mp3's then put them safe on a shelf and take the flash drive in my car. As a teen I runied a few discs taking them in the car so for a long time I only took burned ones in the car. This way if the burn or flash drive gets lost or ruined I can just re do it. If my pc crashed well I still have my discs on my book case and can re rip them. I did some records as a kid, they are nice for sure but cds just work better for me all around.

In my opinion the number is a chapter which means a main division of a book, typically with a number or title while the song title is a song title more of chapter 1 leaning towards book 📕 📖 📚. For me as a listener studio album 💿 and book 📖 📕 are the same. Because both books and studio albums have a song title and a number right next to it which is book 📕 📖 📚 and chapter.

Advice For The Young At Heart. I was even surprised you sang the demo of advice for the young at heart and Curt sang the album 💿 version it’s a huge compliment from my family to yours. And the outro from advice for the young at heart is actually from swords and knifes which is on Chapter 6 and it segues Year of the knife which is on Chapter 7 and segues Chapter 8 Famous Last Words.

I think the CD revival is here and it's inevitable to increase as scarcity becomes more of a factor. I've had a lot of CDs in the past but lost them in moves and thefts over the years. my approach is different in that I just want to get cheap good quality CDs from bargain bins to build up a collection of music I wanted but never had the money for. Of course I rip them all to flac and use plexamp to stream them in the car and on my phone.

There is a box set of early Chicago, all the Terry Kath albums included, available on Amazon. I got it a few months ago for about £25. Possibly not the best audiophile quality, but seems more than reasonable.

The sound quality is great and the build quality seems to be good so far too. I never did get it to pair with my Sennheiser Momentum 2 headphones over bluetooth though, so that's a black mark. I have to use them wired, which although gives me better sound quality is much less convenient!

Interesting analysis, one thing against CDs is that they can be ripped, copied and shared so easily. If you don't care about having the cover artwork, notes etc you can effectively get a collection of hard copy music for free.

Certainly in charity shops, CD's are going the way of vinyl in terms of the quality of what is showing up there.

Yeah there's definitely less than there was. Even over the last couple of months I have found the ones in my town have had much less good stuff in them. I'm not far from Cambridge though and there's a good selection in some of the charity shops there still. Who knows for how long though!

Many CDs are not cheap. Like Bowie ones on RCA. Many compilations now sell for 3 or 4 times their original price. Some boxsets are very expensive also.

Each to their own. I did that in the mid 2000's and ended up regretting it. For me, I really enjoy having physical music and stereo components to play them on. I totally get that for most people the bulk and inconvenience isn't worth it but I would never get rid of my CDs again!

CDs don't need to return, they've never been away. I'd never even used a streaming service until a few months ago. I bought a CD today, it cost me the princely sum of £2.

Prices are already going up here in Holland in the Charity shops. Even used CD's are drying up, vinyl dried up 10 years ago. Cd's don't wear when you're playing them, records do. I store my Cd's in DJ wallets that can hold 300 CD's, very "compact" indeed. Cd's can be ripped, records you have to record in real time. Records have to be cleaned, my RCM cost 500 euro. Cleaning 14 records takes 1,5 hour. After 1990 here in Holland no pop/rock albums were pressed on vinyl anymore so after 1990 it's CD time. OTOH 60s/70s albums i have on LP i rarely find on CD, i have one or two compilations of these 60s/70s acts . Error correction. A somewhat scratched CD can play back perfectly. Try that with an LP. Spotify sounds like sh*t compared to CD. Not everything is on Spotify etc. DAC's have become way better. I have a 2008 PS Audio DAC behind my 1988(!) Sony CDP which has a digital output. It still works as a transport, the CD medium hasn't changed since 1984. Streamers will become obsolete in time. I found a Pink Floyd/Animals on CD for 1 euro lately. And a reissue LP in a local shop for 31,99 euro!

The portability of CD's is a non issue, they may be smaller than vinyl albums but no one is going to carry around a bunch of CD's for listening on a portable device. Streaming or downloaded music on a portable device are the preferred methods of listening on the go. Price isn't a big incentive because any increase in demand for CD'S will surely include an increase in their price. However, I don't think a significant increase in CD sales is on the horizon. I think the current popularity of vinyl is here to stay. CD's and streaming won't supplant vinyl, neither digital format is new enough to take over, the good news is, one format no longer has to suffer greatly because another exists. CD players in cars and portable CD players are not a necessity anymore. With that, a significant reason for buying CD's no longer exists, this alone will prevent them from becoming "a big thing again". Vinyl has its place and its in the home, which is also now the case with CD's. Those who have invested in a sound system for vinyl are unlikely to discard it for an exclusive return to CD's. CD's will continue to be sold and used but unlike in the 80's, 90's and early 00's, they now have competition from vinyl and streaming. I think that all three formats will be popular for a long time but its unlikely one will knock the other out of the market place in a similar way that CD's did to vinyl after their introduction. Each format has a place in our lives, streaming is convenient, CD's don't require much care and offer good fidelity, vinyl rewards the extra effort with tactile engagement, a unique auditory experience, visual pleasures and nostalgia. That said, there are too many reasons why CD's will not have a big revival, their piece of the market will remain as it is for some time to come!

Matt, when you say CD revival are you talking in terms of new CD sales or just a collectibility of used CDs. For me as a child who saw the introduction of CD it has never gone away. While I have a sizable collection of vinyl from mainly purchased in the 80s and 90s I have only purchased one new LP since then which was the Dinner Party by Robert Glasper, only because it was not available on CD but it gave me access to a high res download. I currently cannot see a new CD revival since the BPI are only interested in promoting vinyl because there is a massive markup which doesn't exist in CDs currently. The only thing that truly concerns me about CD collecting and ownership is that I have been made aware of CD rot which was something I only thought afflicted laserdiscs. This is where the lacquer seal is starting to tarnish and the reflective finish of the disc begins to oxidize - you will see this if you have any of these discs as a tarnishing or a bronzing of the disc around the edges. If you have any CDs like this make sure you get a replacement copy as soon as you can 👍😭

What's stupid is spending $50.00 - $60.00 or more on a vinyl record. And then subjecting yourself to the surface noise of the record, not to mention the skips. So I hope you're right, and the cd is making a comeback.

@@Philosophynut86 There's always going to be a higher noise floor with vinyl because the stylus is physically dragging along the surface of the record. I'm not against vinyl in any way and I do have a modest (but growing) collection of 100 records or so but CD definitely wins on this particular point.

Still got all my cds but there in flat pack sleeves for storage...I agree with most of that but would comment about the fact the cds are manufactured incorrectly in my opinion which is why they can sound rigid ....or flat sounding. Does anyone know about DSD? . Which is in fact SACD that flopped because it wasn't promoted ...this to me is as close to analogue you an get to and it sounds great . Vinyl at the end of the day isn't gonna save music

CDs are expensive. I buy from boutique labels like Cherry Red, Edsel, Omnivore, Real Gone etc...and when I try to find something out of print, it's expensive as hell sometimes. Never stopped buying CDs, but did stop buying vinyl.

Yeah true, while you can get many great albums on CD for practically nothing, there are definitely some more expensive releases out there. as you said, if it's out of print or rare the prices can go sky high!

I prefer Minidisc, the last and best physical media. You can’t get me to mess with cassettes, I hated them when I was a teenager except for the ability to record mix tapes and trade. CD’s are excellent, far superior to vinyl in my eyes. They use lasers! How futuristic is that?

It's all a question of scale I think. CDs sales have been nosediving for years while vinyl sales have seen a resurgence. CDs had a massive lead in the market when the music industry tried to get everyone to buy them and ditch their old LPs, but since then it's clear that vinyl is on the rise in a way CDs are currently not. I would like to see them cherished again as I really like the format and hate to see such great sounding music being viewed as landfill for the most part.

If you are in London, avoid Flashback Records for vinyl and CDs, they're a rip off. They sell used CD's for £4.99 or more, while in charity i get them for £1.

It dosen’t matter how you say it if an album total 🟰 duration is about 29:25 and it has about 10 chapters it would considered a mini book 📕 📖 📚 but an album that has 8 chapters and the total 🟰 duration is about 49:37 it would consider as a full book 📖 📕 📚 to me it dosen’t matter how long or short the albums are but in my preference albums are books 📖 📚 📕.

My two cents on how to revive the cd? One of the BIGGEST reason vinyl came back was because of the tangible nature of it. Many people who collect physical media love owing the "stuff". What they need to do is start releasing cd in the LONG BOXES AGAIN!!! Give us collectors something more tangible to collect. Especially outside of these pathetic, flattened digipaks. I have about 5000 lps and 1500 cds. If they were reissuing all the Iron Maiden, Priest, Ozzy, Pearl Jam, John Coltrane, etc cds again and putting them in the Long Boxes will all the artwork?....I would LITERALLY being going out and rebuying ALL those brand new cds again that I already have! If they want an revival they need to focus on the the collectors who want "Music Stuff"!!!

There is certainly cds resurgence, not revival. CDs have never been dead unlike vinyl. The interesting fact about the current cds resurgence is that newly designed interesting cd players with amazing high end technology dac are coming out in the market at affordable tag.

Musicians need to SELL music again, and we need a CD 2.0 Japan Quality Mini Vinyl, NOT cheap print+jewelcase anymore. Japan has done it better than the USA & Europe. Also we need a new CD Technology and new Vinyl, they are not improving since the 70s is crazy!!!

Streaming sucks. Rip your CD's and shove 'em on your phone. Much better quality and don't have to lug anything around. I still buy CD's and vinyl, love both formats.

I think for most people that's always going to be true. Streaming is much more convenient and cheaper. For those of us who enjoy our physical music collections though I don't see them going away. I think, like vinyl there will be a growing number of CD enthusiasts over the next few years, but it will never be the dominant format like it was in it's heyday.

You can start by knowing how to handle and store your cd's. I have cd albums approaching 40 years old. They look and sound as good as they day they were released. In fact, many of them sound better than their "re-released", "remastered" counterparts.

Yeah, Shhhhhh! CDs are worthless and you should give them all to a charity shop. Preferably the one nearest to me. I bought a near complete set of Jethro Tull recently for less than the price of a best of.
