Great start to basic wiring and troubleshooting. Always double check and trust your test results....Do not keep resetting the breaker once you have seen indications of shorted phases. Keeps from causing more serious damage to your service panel and breaker.

Some of the best explanations so far. On your first drawing you show no direct connection between RS, On the second drawing you show a connection between RS. What is the actual path the resistance takes in the compressor?

I believe I am somewhat dyslexic so I have to be able to trace out a circuit before I can understand it. So, the power comes in at terminal C. R-C has the lowest resistance so what prevents it from going that way? Thanks.

What if the system has water vapor and acids form and the compressor still is running fine ? can you tell if the compressor is going bad by these checks or do an acid test and evac the system then dehydrate the system to 500 microns and put in recycled refrigerant or virgin refrigerant ? or if there is a odd smell coming off the compressor?

It is a single phase not a one phase.

Testing continuity on the copper is always the best choice since the paint of the compressor does not make good contact if any.
