I don't think they're the weakest. If you include the lieutenants. I mean, they've got to be more powerful than they were during the Soul Society arc, right? Yamamoto's absence makes a huge difference though.

*SORRY FOR THE PARAGRAPH* I would say that you're overall assessment and analysis of the post TYBW Gotei is quite accurate though they do have some very strong members that are stronger than they were previously during different eras, the inexperience of the new captains that have been added far outweighs the strength that had been gained by those who came over from the Yamamoto version. Out of all of those promoted to Captain since the Yamamoto iteration, I believe only one really deserving of it and she still has a long way to go, that being Rukia and two maybes(I honestly don't mind her being a captain as she really increased in strength and she's in a very similar situation to toshiro was, strong but inexperienced when compared to her elders) Lisa was a lieutenant over 100 years ago and has definitely increased in strength to the point where she could have learned bankai and become effective with it, not to mention she is a Visored, which give her to have that dual type spiritual pressure level and she would have way more spiritual energy then some of the other new captains(all other Visoreds of captain rank were reinstated following the defeat of Aizen except for Love, I don't know why he wouldn't be asked to come back kind of annoyed me considering his strength and the the 7th division, which was his former squad needed a captain after the demise of Komamura). The only other person that we could even argue might belong is Iba... Though that is a hard argument because we haven't seen anything from him, which means he could have been keeping his true strength hidden during this period, we do see his zanpakuto released at some points, though it is never given a name or an ability. I believe the shadiness behind the character gives him more of a believable chance of actually being a captain level soul reaper, he did get murked by Allon but that cero out of the eye thing might have surprised even the captain(it wasn't to long after that Yamamoto stepped in, maybe he was going to return to the battle but Yamamoto had already engaged allon). Anyway rambling aside I do agree, though though I think they have probably significantly increased in power since the end of the TYBW Arc, it is yet to be seen what level they are at now and until it is seen, we must go under the assumption that it is the weakest incarnation of the gotai 13, that's not even bringing up Yamamoto, the loss of his strength is definitely something that can't be oversighted though I do believe personally that the brokenness of Shunsui's abilities makes him a decent replacement(well not possessing the same raw destructive power as Yamamoto there are not many opponents that Shunsui would be incapable of defeating due to the broken abilities of his zanpakuto).

Wait this is on a side note from my previous answer are we including the Gotei were Aizen Gin and Tousen are missing? If so that one or the one at the end of turn back the pendulum is probably the weakest technically, but this other one is still very unbalanced. I also have to state that I believe Kensei, Shinji and Rose all contribute to a portion of its strengths they are all Visoreds and have some pretty unique abilities, definitely worth to be there. I say they deserve a little bit more credit as I do believe that they would be capable of defeating both Soifon and Rukia(if they were to fight another Captain they would be showcasing their strength I believe, it seems like they were almost defeated as a plot device for renji's entry). They also have the option of just going full hollow

There is no debate. Yamamoto was so powerful both Aizen and Yhwach were scared to take him on without cheat codes. Lets say that again: two of the most broken villains in all of fiction looked at this old man and thought ''aw, hell no.''

I mean can't it be argued with his Bankai Shunsui would be a problem to both these monster villains as well? I mean do they even have Intel on all the captains bankai's and has abilities. Shunsui is similar to Yama's bankai being basically a one hit kill after its released along with Ichibei

Don't want to offend anyone but I always felt like the Vizards were just filling in the blanks for captains that were stronger than them. Seriously they were a huge let down in the final arc. Aizen, Gin and Tosen were more capable shinigami in every aspect

I dunno about tosen tho...he got nothing done himself aside from taking out a barely walking Uryu, backstabbing Kensei and cutting off Grimmjows arm...he got absolutely washed by Kenpachi and needed hollowfication to match komamura (who pretty much was only losing because he couldn´t bring himself to kill tosen)

@@ScientologyHunter2 To be fair, Tosen could've defeated Kenpachi by decapitating him, but of course, he chose to monologue and give Kenpachi time to figure out a strategy to win. It's the same problem with Shinji and Rose - they won't shut up when necessary.

I definitely agree 100%. In fact I think that's the point. Like you said, this is a time of rebuilding after a major conflict and there was a power vacuum that had to be filled. Szaylapporo outright confirmed that the reason why Hell's gates were blown open was because of the sudden shift in power. Suddenly a bunch of powerful people in the soul society were either "relocated" to hell or sealed away. This new generation of the Gotei 13 is set up to face the legacy of their predecessors. Additionally, they need to prove themselves by resolving a problem that their predecessors never had to face.

By far. Without a doubt. A new captain commander. Two captains that by their own admission aren't really ready for the position of captain and unless theres a retcon, 4 of the current captains obtained bankai only very recently. And effectively no captains with long term experience besides Kyoraku. Yes you got a prodigy in Hitsuguya, a very solid captain in Byakuya, and a monster in Zaraki, and even 4 vizards. But when Hitsuguya is still implied to have alot of maturing still to do. The vizards, who are supposed to have the edge, are some of the most underwelming captains overall. And one of the ones who has the most experience is Soi Fon. You're really looking at an underwelming generation. Thats not even going into all the duds and rookies that make up most of the vice-captains.

They kind of are but their head captain this time is a creative thinker. He's laid back but strict unlike Yama he'd probably accept the help of Orihime anytime of he needs her.

In Isanes defense tho her division is A Medic Division. And she was trained by Unohana and even praised by her for her extremely extraordinary healing skills. True we almost never see Isane do anything but the statement still stands that she is the 3rd best Healer the Gotei13 ever had (yes i am including the zero division guy).

There was just a very big loss losing 3 of the strongest and oldest captains, Yamamoto, Unohana and Ukitake, it's very hard to fill up that massive power gap with captains that are already established.

You're talking about the characters in each formation, but not how strong they were at the time. I don't think the Soul Society Arc version of the Gotei is even close to the power levels by the end of the series. The invasion would have stopped with Ichigo dying against Ikaku if they had the power level they had by the end of the series.

The thing about the gotei 13 from turn back the pendulum is that technically we still have characters like Gin, Tosen Kaien who while not captain or lieutenant are clearly there and can hold their own and probably at the bare minimum Lieutenant level still depending how much they were holding back and I would wager that even probably Komamura is their as well just not shown probably in a seated officer position I think that puts them a bit higher then most people think and possibly really close to the soul society gotei 13

Gotei 13 captains are elite soldiers who happen to be leaders. Its clear throughout the whole manga you cant ever assume the 13 captains are the 13 strongest alive at any time. Seems to always be a strong former captain or vice captain pretending to be weak sitting on the side lines. All these death reapers rarely show there full deck of cards unless they dont have a choice.

I can understand why you think that this Gotei 13 (Thirteen Court Guard Squad) seem to be the weakest, but it's probably cause that a decade had past and the Soul Society itself is basically still healing from the losses they'd suffered from the TYBW, all thanks to the Sternritters and Yhwach mind you. So, it is to no one's surprise that they'll be those seeing this series epilogue Gotei 13 looking destined to be the weakest by far. Even so, if Kubo plans to continue with Bleach, then maybe he'll include the former vice captains (lieutenants) now turned captains and new and current vice captains showing what they can do and can finally show what the names of their shikai and bankai and what abilities they have, while showing that Rose and Kensei have at least grown stronger after the war. But in order for that to happen, it all depends on how well the TYBW anime does overall.

The only way to tactfully grow the power of this new Gotei 13 is to send everyone to the Palace so they learn their inate strength. That is the only way to hack the deficit. There's a need to refine Soi Fon's Bankai. Kyouraku's Bankai, though, could require further and deeper elaboration. The Vizard either needs to be scrapped and give rise to newer characters, or just be bettered!

It really does feel like a meta statement on how in times of peace our guard is let down, I only make that point because toshiro says they're in peace for ten years. That comment made to another member of the 13 implies that it's odd for them to be peaceful for even that short of a time. Which paints this meta picture of how the power has weakened substantially in the absence of constant struggle. If the tybw gets the attention it deserves on release, then kubo will get that green light to make a full length arc or longer for hell arc, where we will likely see these younger greener or weaker captains have that proving ground in hell against the captains of the past that have been sent there. I'm guessing we'll get to see that first generation make an appearance as well as a hell version of Yamamoto, which will easily be the strongest set of antagonists we've seen yet. Typically this is the time where those that seem weaker get to shine in full.

Yamamoto always stood out to me as an oddity. Guy is immensely powerful, has enough ability to overpower any shinigami, quincy or arrancar, yet he stands idle until situation becomes completely dire just to... fail. He must be amongst one of the most powerful yet most ineffective fighters in all shonen media. If instead going after Yhwach he killed off every quincy or if instead of watching how understacked Gotei 13 is fighting arrancar elite he took them on, avoiding the injuries his subordinates will take in the process.. they might win the battle even without Ichigo or Vizards involved. There is no point in powerful sword if it always stays sheathed, eventually it will just become dull. Yamamoto is strong but Kyoraku is a welcome change.

That's kind of Yamamoto's character flaw. Yhwach literally points out him not get Orihime to heal his arm was a stupid move solely made out of pride. That pride is why he lost too, since he felt Yhwach was his problem he failed to solve and that he should fix it himself. He then let his emotions get a hold on him, failed to realize he was fighting a duplicate, and then gave his most powerful asset to the enemy leader. He died thinking he just doomed everyone due to his foolish pride.

Besides the initial gotei. I'm going to argue that SS arc Gotei may be the strongest...and hear me out. Captains: Yamamoto + Unohana were original captains servicing for 1000-2000yrs. probobably the 2 strongest. Ukitake + Shunsui are somewhere between 200-1500yrs old. (depending on the time gap between founding of the academy and gotei 13, and ofc when they attended, likely in the beginning since yama was still a teacher). Kenpachi may not know shikai at this point, but he's able to go up against 2 mid-tier captains solo, w/o shikai beating both. It is essentially the same kenpachi level that defeats Nnoitra the highest non-vasto lorde espada...again w/o shikai. Aizen. Its aizen, regardless of loyalties, enough said. Gin easily on par with Hitsugaya at this point based on his skills w/o sword, what we later know about his bankais insane abilities, and kido skill. Byakuya is basically the same level as he was all the way up until TYBW: and upper-mid tier. Mayuri is basically the same skill between beginning/end of season. his adaptability/ingenuity is only surpassed by Urahara himself. Tosen/Komamura/Soifon are all very lower mid-tier captains in different regards, all having great weaknesses in one area or another. Vice-Captains (this is the other important part): 1/2 the vice captains are captain class in their own right. Sasikibe is 1000yr+ vet and had bankai longer than even ukitake/shunsui have likely been captains (even though it isn't super powerful). Renji (if we say new-bankai) is quite strong, he just gets owned by Byakuya and then Aizen (so too very OP fight) Hisagi/Ikkaku (technically a 3rd seat) are both on par or more powerful than renji at this point, Ikkaku already has his bankai (it is implied it may have been several decades he's had it), and either Hisagi already has his but wouldn't reveal it, or he was very close. Yachiru...Is technically a zanpakutou spiritual perpetually manifested. She is Nozarashi and possesses ALL of the power/abilities and more that we later see Kenpachi use in shikai/bankai, albeit she uses her shikai in the one short scene atypical of what Nozarashi would do shortly later. Kira/Rangiku/Momo are all weak or just avg strength vice-captains. Nothing super impressive about any of them. In fact Yamichika is on par with any of these guys w/ his true shikai. Full power Rukia is about here as well. (just prevented from being a seated officer by Byakuya). Iba/Isane/Omaeda are seemingly useless in combat and despite apparent decent skill it is never showcased to be very powerful. So, out of the Vice Captains 6 can use bankai, are captain class etc. Of the remaining 6 (1 KIA at the time) there are 3 mid-tier and another 2 non-vice captains on par with them. So 9-11 solid 2nd string ppl. The new Gotei 13 just sucks in this regards. As you put it 1/2 the new lineup of capt consists of the remains of the vice-captains (and not even the best) or 100% unknowns. The remainder of the vice captains is basically held up by 3, with the rest being shots in the dark. So if a captain fell, there are at max 3 ppl that could fill their positions in an emergence. ...Meanwhile look who are not in the Gotei 13 and how strong they are: Urahara/Tessai/Yoruichi are upper-mid tier to upper tier captains Ichigo and Iishin, both royals and Ichigo being current most powerful being. (except maybe Aizen's new chair) The remaining vizards: Hiyori, Hachi, Love, the other vice-captain chick. All captain class and likely mid-tier if they'd use both max soul-reaper and hollow powers. Halibel is still alive and wasn't ever beat actually by Hitsugaya, she was taken down by Aizen. Nel and Grimmjow are espada on par with current mid-tier captains. Tsukishima is still alive and on par probably with the new lower-tier captains, if not better. = 13 non-Gotei 13 beings at Captain class (that Gotei 13 is lucky most of which are more or less allies).

just like how the hell arc gives us wish fullment i feel like this is kubo chance to show us how strong the vizards are along side toshiro, soi fong, and byakuua as these characters has yet to wow the viewer since their debut fight excluding toshiro new bankai.

As someone who’s not super familiar with bleach since I haven’t re-read it since it came out, but had seen a good couple videos by you and others on the topic, my immediate thought contrary to this came up in the section on Rukia. Rukia herself beat an Espada who was arguably uniquely suited towards defeating her. The espada were mostly all Vasto Lorde level hollows and after becoming Arrancar, got a massive power boost. So probably significantly more powerful than a ‘normal’ Vasto Lorde, at least on average. People like Barrigan would probably have mopped the floor with most of the espada even if he never became and Arrancar, but the general point still stands. The 7th Kenpachi was considered strong enough to join the 0 devision, and based on what we know that might have been almost entirely due to his combat strength. He also had a Bankai uniquely suited for taking it a single powerful opponent. One of the things we know was one of his most impressive feats was taking out a vasto lorde. So the 7th kenpachi who again is an exceptionally strong captain, is uniquely suited to taking out a single opponent like a Vasto Lorde, and doing so is one of if not the most impressive feat he has. Rukia fights someone arguably suited to beating her more than most others would be, doesn’t have her bankai at all, and even disregarding the lack of bankai becomes much stronger in “base”/Shikai by the end of the series, and she takes out an Espada which shouldn’t be any weaker than a Vasto Lorde, and if anything would likely be stronger. So if Rukia is batting even and/or arguably putting up a better showing than one of the historically stronger Kenpachi, and she’s a “mid tier” captain in the current lineup, I’d say that there’s no real universe where you could consider them weaker than any other lineup, unless you’re saying Yamamoto himself was entirely making up the difference and was essentially “carrying” the strength of all the previous generations. And the Yamamoto argument isn’t a bad one to make, but I do think the Rukia comparison kinda means it’s the only argument you can make for the current gen being the weakest. Also as a final point, while there are a good couple “filler” captains who aren’t very strong, thereve been points in the series where there’s multiple seats missing so I think you could very easily argue that even a weaker level captain is better than no captain.

I dont think Isane, Iba, and Lisa were promoted just out of necessity. There are plenty of people they could have promoted in their place like Renji, Shuhei, Love, Ikkaku. And even Lieutenants who may not be at captain level but have actually been shown doing stuff, way more than the 3 that were promoted, like Rangiku, Izaru, even Momo. My issue is that if Kubo was always planning on making these 3 the captains then he should have done more with them.

Great video however I do have a question. I might have missed it since I discovered your channel a little over a year ago. But have you done or plan to do a video about the Special War Powers. I'm sure a lot of us will like to hear your take, explanation & thoughts about them. Mostly now after the TYBW & if they did live up to their hype. Maybe even more than the Royal Guard disappointment minus Ichibe of course. Again great video & keep up the amazing content. :)

I see a lot of people complain that certain current capitains shouldn't have been promoted like Iba or Isane and should have been replaced by Renji/Shuhei. I don't think that's the right way to see this. Strenght is one thing, managing a soul society in times of peace another. I don't think every captain should be super strong, just look at Nanao as lieutenant. She is useless in battle but great at managing the first division. Yeah In terms of strenght it's the weakest gotei 13, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Kyroku did say Toshiro has immense potential and will surpass very soon given Toshiro having strongest ice zanpakto and Yamamoto having he strongest fire one Toshiro will be head captain soon and that could be huge

So when we say Isane did absolutely nothing during the entire series...that is untrue. During the rescue arc we see Isane release her shikai on Ichigo, who immediately took her out. From a story perspective, the reason as to why we see promotions that are ultimately worthless (renji should have taken over instead of Lisa becoming a captain, she was a vice captain during turn back the pendulum), is due to shunsuis inexperience of being the captain commander, and he's over compensating by placing the people he knows into captain positions when in reality, they have no business being captains. The only person that was 100% qualified to be captain commander was Unohana, and she didn't get the promotion because her date was sealed probably before Yamajis death to train kenpachi to talk to his sword

One thing you have to remember this is 10 years after the battle so the all had time to train and grow stronger. My guess they worked there buts off to gain more power as to not get caught off guard again.

I think the newest group has huge potential for growth. Rukia, hitsugaya, ken, and renji still have a lLOT before they hit their limits. Also don’t forget that substitute shinigami and his friends. They aren’t gotei members. But they are very close allies.

That says something when the enemies in this Hell arc are the previous Gotei 13 captains that have died and now reside in Hell. So they have a real uphill battle ahead of them when Kubo decides to continues writing the Hell arc.

I still root for my girl Soi Fon working hard since the start to keep with some cheat teammates and facing the worst opponents she could get considering her abilities. I am glad she is up-mid tier here I hope Kubo fix some stuff on her and give her more screentime and better fights. I want a Taijutsu fight with her or a fight such as Reigai Soi Fon vs Komamura.

Of the four replacement captains, Rukia is the only one who really seems to fit the bill. In the cases of the fourth and seventh divisions especially, there were better choices readily available. Instead of promoting Tetsuzaimon, why not bring back Love Aikawa the same way they brought back Shinji, Rose, and Kensei? And for the fourth division, I think Hachigen Ushōda is the obvious choice, considering his strong healing ability, defensive power, and being the only Vizard to actually win a real fight. Lastly, the eighth division. With Shunsui and Nanao now in the first division, Lisa is the only other character to have been part of the eight division, but considering we don’t know what that division actually does, I’m not sure I buy that Renji or Shuhei wouldn’t make a better captain. Even just by virtue of definitely having a Bankai. Personally, I would give it to Shuhei, since he did a great job leading the ninth division after Tosen left, and I think he’s suffered more than enough abuse under Kensei and Mashirao.

Don't underestimate Kenpachi. He is, after training with Unohana, stronger than Unohana. She is a founding member of the Gotei 13. After this he optains Shikai and Bankai. Bankai has a multiplier of 10. So he alone is as strong as 10 founding members of the Gotei 13. If we assume, that the 12 Captains where comparable, he is as strong, as the founding Gotei 13 (without Yamamoto). And we didn't factor in his Shikai. I read, that the force multiplier of Shikai is around 5 to 10. If we assume it is 5, what I think is reasonable and on the lower end, we have a 50 founding member strong shinigami. I can't see, how the Gotei 13 on the end of the Soulsociety arc (the weakest in my opinion) could stop him. The question boils down to, how OP is Yamamoto. But this question is a little bit misleading, becose his Bankai isn't lost. If someone would be strong enough to handle it, he could use it. And we didn't speak about the growth of other Captains, like Mayuri who got from being beaten by Uryu, to killing Pernida. Or Hitsugaya, who got from struggling against the 3rd Espada to forcing the strongest Quincy to evolve and using his Schrift. Or Byakya who got 10 times stronger in the soul palace.

In a short span of time we lost Yamamoto, unohana, ukitake, and I guess komomura But we gained a stronger byakuya, a stronger renji, and stronger rukia, a stronger kenpachi and hitsuguya. Along with having visord captains who Atleast should be pretty high up there with their masks and abilities if they were actually able to use them.

Going solely by the captains and ignoring the first generation out of necessity, the only divisions that don't get weaker over time are the 6th and 12th, and that only applies if you believe that A) Byakuya is stronger than Ginrei, and B) Mayuri and Urahara are roughly equal. And until we found out the truth about Isshin, we could have added the 10th to that list, but oh well. Losing Aizen alone was a blow they never truly recovered from. And given all the losses they suffered from the Quincies even WITH Unohana, it made no sense to sacrifice her, not even for Zaraki's Bankai. Even strictly as a healer, replacing her with Isane is a massive downgrade. It says a lot that the final lineup is weaker even than the Pendulum lineup, as that's the pre-Hollowed Vaizards, so they wouldn't have peaked yet. And much as I like Rukia and strong as she is, I can't see her as captain material. She looks so weird in that white coat to me. Which is even more striking because I still consider her more suited for that than the Vaizard captains, just based on how closely she would have worked with Ukitake and others in the division. And yes I'm including the Vaizards that were captains twice, that's WHY it's so striking to me.

I would argue that the Vizards' inconsistent performance and lackluster characterization was due to poor writing more than anything. I think he used them as a cool band-aid to explain a power up for the MC, but didn't have a clear trajectory for any of them. So instead of actually fleshing the characters out and giving the audience a more concrete sense of their strength, personalities, etc., he used them as cannon fodder to showcase the villain's strength. As the audience, you know that they are SUPPOSED to be strong, but you have no idea how strong they actually are. It's a good way to increase the tension, but the characters will always just feel like stand-ins, which cheapens the work IMO.

The end of the series Gotei should be weak from a narrative standpoint because its meant to symbolise the coming of age of a new generation of protectors The reason the og Gotei was so strong is because 1. their ideals are battle centric and 2. They were constantly fighting and this mindset honed them to be blades of war but this current Gotei is less bloodthirsty but as cautious as ever too. They're like one of Mothra's imago where its essentially a ressurected version of the old Gotei but with wayyy less bloodthirsty tendencies Even though they're the weakest iteration right now, that dosent mean they'll stay weak. Remember, kyoraku has made it so that troop recruitment is a much faster process to ensure more shinigami are enrolled and since he has a "Do anything to win" mentality, the vizard should be able to use their hollow masks and be stronger as a result

I think an easy way out for kubo is to just say the vizards werent training or killing hollows this whole time bc they were hiding from the soul society, They sent the entire gotei 13 hierarchy to watch over ichigos battle with ginjo bc they didnt know the choice he would make. one small addendum i'd add to your assessment of the first introduced Gotei 13, you said Tousen was a somewhat weak link, but still had lots of impressive achievements under his belt.....but does he though? His only major victories that we see are against generic hollows, against Uryu AFTER he loses his powers, he backstabs his allies in turn back the pendulum and his only REAL victory is against Kumamura, after getting a huge power upgrade from Aizen and lets be real who HASN'T beaten poor Kumamura? He gets hilariously outclassed by Kenpachi and then somewhat ironically killed by a backstab by his vice captain. so really, as far as achievements go he's at around the same level as Kumamura and the Vizard!

There's no reason to prolong that. Tousen's strength was completely unknown at that time though, there's no way to accurately powerscale Godfly Tousen since the only something relevant comparison we have of a shinigami-esque fighter having two hollow-related upgrades (mask and rez) is Ichigo, who went from barely beating Grimmjow, Espada 6, to absolutely curbstomping arguably the strongest Espada so if Tousen received an even slightly comparable increase in power, then it wouldn't make sense for Komamura to triumph. So sure, Komamura lost but I don't think that loss doesn't make sense and would be different for almost the entire cast.

Well we don't know three of the new captains abilities since they got little to no onscreen time in the series (Insane, Iba, and Lisa) We got Shinji's bankai in the CFYOW novels which is scary with its hacks We also have powerhouses still like Zaraki who's implied to be even stronger than Unohanna with his bankai. Plus we have Toshiro, Rukia, Shunsui and Byakuya who have monstrous power. And the unpredictably of Mayuri Kurosuchi with him being able to adapt his bankai to whatever he wants. The problem is we don't truly know because we don't have too much info especially on the new captains to scale them against other versions of the gotei 13. Plus imagine in the Hell arc if Kenpachi masters his bankai he may even be more powerful than we seen him release bankai against Gerald. I also think it can be argued Renji deserves to be a captain vs other new captains because he was implied to be the strongest vice captain with his new version of banaki, and Shuhei who got banaki also in the CFYOW novels which I think he surpassed both his captains in Kaname Tosen and Kensei Muguruma

I think the Gotei after Aizen left was the weakest with only ten captains. At the end prolly one or two captains and vice captains are weaker than those at the beginning but remembering that Ichigo, Renji, Shuhei, and Ikkaku are all captain level or greater plus Zaraki, Toshiro, Rukia, Byakuya are all vastly stronger at the end of the series. Yama and Unohana not being there is a big blow but everyone else really powered up. I do agree with you on the vizards, we know they’re powerful but Kubo writes them so terribly that it’s hard to get behind them. Ukitake and Chojiro were very unproven. SS Ichigo who’s bandaged up knocks Chojiro out with hands, and Ukitake does nothing but deflect some ceros and then get one shotted. I’d say Iba is the weakest since Isane’s role is healing while his is front lines.

Lets be honest, Shinji to me is the most interesting one because, Kubo tries to paint him as strong but never gives him the win to prove it. He made him Leader of the Vizored's, who go on to accomplish basically nothing despite the calibur of their members, all being upper eschelon Soul Reapers before also gaining hollow powers on top of that. He makes him seem intelligent, but not on the same level as guys like Aizen, Mayuri or Urahara. He makes him seem cunning but not to the same degree as Kyoraku. So in the end you basically end up with guy who leads a "failed" faction and who was smart enough to suspect Aizen but not smart enough to hinder him in any substantial way. In a way he suffers from what I call Chad syndrome. Where he's (like many of the Vizored's I should add) used as a measuring stick of a foes true strength. Like for a threat to be "big fight" worthy they first go through a character like Shinji, who's strong, but not the strongest, smart but not the smartest, calculating but not incalculable. To then prove they're ready to play with the big boys like Kenpachi, Urahara or Kyoraku.

Kyoraku admitted it himself that Byakuya has the same amount of reiatsu as he himself and that Byakuya would be the next head captain in the current gotei 13 so I wouldnt consider those two as monsters beside maybe Urahara for its intelligence. But realistically, while Urahara is shown to be smarter, I would argue Mayuri is more of a threat than Urahara himself.

If its just that you think I should have compared him to Byakuya instead of those guys, I mentioned the guys I did because in my eyes at least (though for sure its debatable) they are the characters in bleach who are the best at the traits mentioned, like Leadership, Intelligence, Cunning etc. that Kubo tries to portray Shinji to have. On a personal note though I think Byakuya wouldn't make anywhere near as good a head captain as Kyoraku. He's shown at multiple points in the series that he's rigid and inflexible when it comes to tradition and his way of thinking. Like his pluses are his massive Reiatsu, powerful Zanpakuto, and his families political backing. But I wouldn't say he's ever proven to be massively intelligent or anything. In the invasion arc when he's given clearly bad orders to capture and execute his adopted sister he didn't even question it meanwhile all the "smart" captains were running around in the background trying to figure out why they should follow these orders. And as the masterminds were out scheming he didn't even think to look he's just gone "order's are orders". A captain commander who cant think for himself and just blindly follows orders is kinda useless. When you think carefully about it he's not exactly a wise strategist and tactician when it comes to battle either. In nearly all of his fights his strategy is the same as Komamura's (someone who's shit on all the time for being on the weaker end of the captains). Wade into the battle and overwhelm with sheer strength and the only reason it works better than Komamura is simply that his Zanpakuto has a better and harder to counter ability. He'd be like a less powerful version of Genryusai. And lets be honest the reason the Soul Reapers got owned in the first part of the 1000 year blood war is because they got out thought and out strategized because Genryusai (like Byakuya) relied only on strength. Which as a result made both of them get absolutely smashed at the beginning of the war. It was only when Kyoraku took over and out thought his opponents that they actually started stacking up the wins.

He's basically Worf. Someone to beat up to show how strong someone else is. Shinji should be one of the top Captains. He's been around for a while, he's experienced, he's highly intelligent (but not a scientist like Urahara/Mayuri are), he's a leader of other captain class shinigami, he's skilled enough to land hits on Aizen (which at least puts him at the power level of everyone in Urahara's group). If Shunsui were to die, he's probably the next most qualified Captain Commander.

Yeah. Losing Yamamoto is a huge hit to Gotei's power level, and while Kenpachi and Rukia now having Bankai and Renji having an improved Bankai are nice boons, I doubt they come close to filling the power gap left by the former Head Captain. Losing Unohana, meanwhile, is a big hit to the Gotei's power, undoubtedly, but far more so a massive hit to the organization's healing capabilities. I want to say Ukitake is a big loss as well, but his debilitating illness combined with simply not getting that good of a showing over the series makes it debatable.

It’s worth noting that the Gotei 13 lost power because it lost some masters; but they were the strongest shinigami because they were the oldest, most experienced ones. The Gotei 13 has steadily improved since the start of the series and they will continue to do so. They have all the time in the world to grow in power so there is potential for someone like Zaraki to reach Yamamoto’s level. Just look at Renji’s exponential growth through the series.

People always forget he's the youngest and most immature of the captains in experience and spiritual strength and he hasn't even mastered his bankai due to it. @@coronbrown9238 The reason he mentions that is because Love was the Captain of the Seventh Division during the Turn Back The Pendulum Arc, which was run by Sajin Komamura for most of the series, and is now run by Iba. Lisa Yadomaru is Captain of the Eighth Division now. So, your answer is also kind of confusing, because they both could've theoretically become Captains of their former divisions.

@@Instinctuality i mention Lisa because I think she deserved the promotion of becoming a captain. More then Love coming back and getting his position. Iba showed a lot Maturity throughout the series. And that he was always dedicated individuals when came to ranking up. also Love squad wasn’t over taken by traitors. His squad had a very honorable and loyal Wolfman ( and by his side his loyal vice captain.) when he fell it was only right for Iba to finally step up. Not for shunsui to hit up Love and be like okay you can your position back cause someone previous is incapable now.

You never mentioned Iba in your previous comment, and I was saying that Love was the captain of the Seventh Division before he was a Visored, which is what Iba leads right now. I was trying to explain that they both could have become captains of their former divisions. I do agree that it makes sense for Iba to take over, but I can also say the same about Love, since a majority of the Visoreds who were Captains or Vice-Captains took over their former positions or higher. Love would also be a more reasonable choice, since he can be assumed to be more powerful and have a mastered Bankai, unlike Iba, who we know nothing about, and states at the epilogue of the TYBW arc that he thinks of himself as only a Captain in name. All in all, Love has far more credentials for taking over the Captain position in the Seventh Division. We also saw what he could do briefly during the Arrancar Arc when he and Rose took on Coyote Starrk. Once again, I do agree that it makes sense for Iba to take over in a way, but I feel like the stuff I have mentioned cannot be ignored.

It's a perfect representation of a post war situation. All those captain posts were filled in haste so that the institutions will not be compromised. This makes it even more perfect than it actually is. This is a clear representation of how the Gotei has suffered and how from the remnant of its past glory it is trying to build itself. Reminds me of the poem where the captain of the ship dies but they win the war so the remaining members have to celebrate and rebuild at the same time they are sad for the said captain. I don't remember the poem's name unfortunately.

Indeed, in terms of sheer firepower is a weaker gotei. But looking through a different perspective, I think its current state is a good pressure factor to push Soul Society evolution forward With figures such as Yama and Unohna around, they could afford being stiff and conservative, nowadays not so much. This final Gotei 13 concentrates less power and works out the world balance through collaboration of different races instead of coercion. Unohana lost to a kid Zaraki and Yamamoto stopped training Zaraki because of him being unable to stop Zaraki if that potential would be reached. Since that "potential" Zaraki is this Zaraki, we can conclude Zaraki >= Yamamoto >=(?) Unohana. But since Toshiro was able to freeze Gerard who was cut by bankai Zaraki and through Gerard's miracle scales with bankai Zaraki, we could argue adult Toshiro can put a decent fight against Yamamoto or Unohana. With Byakuya being able to shatter bankai Zaraki lvl Gerard, we got another one in that tier. With those three combined, I would argue them > Yamamoto and Unohana.

In terms of sheer firepower Zaraki trumps all of the previous Hotei combined, excluding Yamamoto. Between Zaraki and Yamaji himself it's debatable, but destroying a Seiretei-sized meteor is still the most impressive observed feat in all of Bleach. Byakuya is probably on Aizen level in terms of raw stats after his training arc, and his Zanpaktou is way more focused on dealing damage then the one Aizen had. Sooo, ugh, I really don't see much loss in firepower already, and I didn't even mention Abarai's insane powerup yet, he's a total beast, way stronger than Zaraki or Komamura of Soul Society arc, and those were the top dogs of raw power of that time period. Honestly, that version of Gotei is straight up weak, if we don't count in Aizen and Gin, and they weren't even really on Gotei's side.

I always dislike that Isane did never done anything importance in the series even if she is in Medical Division, she never does any special. I amnt saying that Isane needs to defeat Aizen or kill Kenpachi but maybe she heals someone near of death. Maybe she heals an entire division. Maybe she cant be tricked or can cure dangerous poison or disease. Because let's be honest, nobody can be at same level as Orihime Inoe her "healing" has no match.

well, Isane is a shinigami and Inoe might have a better healing ability but being a captain on Medical division isnt just having the ability, but also the knowledge and how you can keep the order of the division or how to control the situation. Isane been around Unohana for a long time and she knew all the stuff from the division and how to run things as usual.

A part of me feels it is pretty intentional to reduce the Gotei 13 into the state it became by the end of the main series. They're no longer the same group of powerhouses that do most of the heavy lifting for Ichigo and the gang. But this group is no longer as complacent and so sure of themselves like they were under Yamamoto. They learned they have to actually grow and develop overtime in order to be ready for future threats. It's a massive humbling experience but there's a payoff that'll come in the future as this new group will continue to learn.

I think this is what maybe Kubo wants to address if he decides to continue the Hell arc. Basically during the war arc, the remnants of the older generations died off. Yamato, Unohana, Ukitake, and Komamura. Now you’ve got essentially the next younger generation taking over the reigns of the new gotei 13. What would be really interesting if the hell arc is pushed through, is Kubo bringing back the original 13 captains as he’s shown the concept art for them. Since the idea is that if a captain dies in battle, they’re reishi can’t return to the soul society and are sent to hell. Since the original 13 are said to be the strongest, it stands to believe they were all sent to hell so it would be a good story to have the original 13 captains take on the current captains. A challenge for them to see if they are truly worthy and ready to handle the role of being a captain of the soul society

They unfortunately lost most of the old guard of captains which were strong and even someone on the mid tier side of power like Komamura. Its weird, captains like Byakuya, Toshiro and Kenpachi received major boost in power to the point outside of shunsui they clearly are not the peak of soul society in power but many of the new captains aren't just fearless but I doubt will surpass the levels most captains were st during the HM arc. Like I doubt insane or iba are top Soul Society Byakuya level who in the grand scheme of things wasn't that powerful. Their in such a weird spot right now due to how quickly they lost 4 captains with no ready replacements outside of maybe Renji who isn't leaving Byakuyas side

It'd weird if they haven't achieved bankai. The 3rd, 5th and 9th divisions had not been assigned captains for the entirety of Arrancar/FKT arcs. They were looking for bankai users and since Renji declined and Ikkaku was hiding his bankai they weren't able to fill the seats until some of the Vidoreds returned to Soul Society. I'm pretty sure they would have stuck by the regulations and only allowed them to be proper captains once they achieved bankai.
