I had a female English Mastiff, who grew up with my kids. There was no better Nanny dog than her. She was so loving, gentle, fun, but had natural guarding instinct. In my neighborhood, there was a slough of home break-ins, well my home was never broken into. Sad to say we lost her after 10 years. Best dog I ever had.

My son has an English Mastiff and I never knew the breed until he got one. I am so over the top in love with the dog. I put in a fence and my whole house is set up for him. When my son travels or needs me to take him my whole place is ready. I go into a downward spiral when he leaves. I have never known such a loving sweet dog in my life. I feel so safe with him and he sleeps with me. I think they are fairly easy to care for, I have him on a routine and he loves it. I love him so much.

I met a retired couple, probably in their 70’s, in Ocala, Fl several years back that had a 230lb English Mastiff. It was a very well mannered animal to say the least. The couple trained their pup to use the bathroom in the bathroom, on the toilet. It would go in lift both lids, do it’s business, then flush as well as put the seat back down. With that being said, in my experience, I think they are very intelligent. They just move at their pace is all.

I had a female English Mastiff for over 10 years. I lost her in July this year. She was very smart, earned multiple titles in AKC Agility, AKC Nose Work, and NACSW Nose Work. She loved her people, every child she saw, and was serious about watching our home. I previously had Dobermans. I just bought my second English Mastiff. Another thing to keep in mind if they are sick or injured and you have to get them to the vet they are very difficult to get in the car if they cant" hop in there self

English Mastiffs are big teddy bears, very gentle 🧸 Family had one named Thor for 11 years inside dog he was 219lbs at his end but was up to 228lbs at one point finally put down as he was unable to walk and he was part of the family, one of the best Dogs we’ve had. Only time he ever bit something out of anger/protection was a horse that ran up too quickly behind my sister, horse got about 10 ft from her And Thor was having none of it … no hesitation from him taking on 900+lbs , and the horse took off running in a panic 😅 no serious injury just a couple teeth marks, no after chase either, just enough to get rid of what he felt was a threat and he was back by her side. I will say that a Mastiff’s protection growl/bark even though rarely ever used is top tier S rank Very deep and guttural, resonating with power, and will make anyone or anything second guess their intentions. 😰 For home protection I would say they are A tier deterrent But don’t expect them to be a full blown attack dog in a home invasion situation they are more of a one or two bite type of defense/guardian dog More of a presence deterrent than attack deterrent For an attack home defense dog I would recommend Wolfdog Rhodesian Ridgeback Rottweiler Take the time to pick and train the right wolf dog, and they are lethal property protectors, Tier S++ best dog family has ever owned was a wolf dog named Cookie she lived 14 years, and even Thor was no match even outweighing her by 60lbs. when it came to protective nature and sheer ferocity Cookie was a beast! She would literally be licking her lips snarling stalking forward at strangers like a real wolf! I dare say she could and would have been able kill a grown man or at least a teenager if given the go ahead. Just be sure you are ready and able to put in the time to train properly from birth or you could wind up with a loose cannon .

I grew up with these dogs. My mother used to show them. One day when we were on a walk, some random dog attacked my brother and bit him badly. Our dog at the time was a 200 pound mastiff named Tinkerbell, who was usually afraid of everything. My mom let her off the leash and she charged this random dog and nearly killed it. Tinkerbell was the most gentle and sometimes timid and cowardly dog I'd ever met and I'd never seen her even bark at something out of anger. Absolutely fantastic dogs.

I would never pay thousands of dollars for any dog but was fortunate enough to get an EM because she was killing chickens (for the fun of it) in her previous home. We don’t have chickens, so the owner gave her to us. And, yes, these dogs live up to the hype, especially as the perfect family dog and resplendent couch potato. These dogs, when active, are great at pivoting on their back legs and jerking their big ol’ heads from here to there in a snap, though it’s hard to believe unless you see it - ask a chicken. And they’re not likely to bite any person, even in a confrontation. They’ll allow the problem to come to them, knock the problem down, and stand over the problem, possibly with a paw on the problem’s chest. These are NOT aggressive or angry dogs. Finally, understand the cost of owning a giant breed (and it really bothers me that this wasn’t discussed). After spending mega bucks to buy a puppy, you will spend a minimum of $300/month for food and preventive meds. We love our precious mastiff, but we’ll never have another one. It’s too expensive. But we are blessed to have Blossom in our lives.

And she caused the least trouble. I was 14 when she died and I was crushed. She was 9 years old, and had lived past crazy injury’s to her hips, bc mastiffs get bad hips after half their life. But she was so gentle and loving and cuddly, she got me through a lot of trauma as a kid. I’d sleep on her big belly 5 nights outta the week. First mastiff I ever encountered was on a working farm B&B in Wales. Small place with only three rooms to rent, and when I was shown to my room, the owner warned me to use the deadbolt on the door as this was normally the dog’s room. He wasn’t kidding - the dog opened the door about an hour after I turned in and joined me in bed. Me, at 6’2” tall and about 220 pounds, shared a twin bed with a 280 pound dog. Dog got up much earlier than I did the next morning, and that is when I learned about the sheer fear that a dog could instill. I went into the dining room, and the owner was busy at the large hearth at the far end of the room. I didn’t see the mastiff, and barely even heard the growl, but I could definitely FEEL that low rumble coming out from under the kitchen table. I’m very thankful that I never had to learn the business end of that growl…

I love how positive you are about the breed. I am on my first English mastiff (not my first guardian ) He is just shy of 2 1/2 years and still growing at 170. He is a wonderful dog. I live in both the city and the country so he gets a nice mix of both. I find that he is a very smart dog (exceptionally sensitive - so absolutely zero yelling unless it’s an emergency ) who trains very nicely. He did forget a lot of it, conveniently during adolescence, but as he grows older it’s all coming back. I do wish that you had one on one sessions near me because my only issue with him is that he does charge people on our country property. He has never had an aggressive bone in his body. he will run straight at a car coming up our drive, barking like a madman, and it is absolutely terrifying for people . All he does is kiss them very enthusiastically when they get out of the car (or into the house ) which is also a problem because he doesn’t understand how big he is and both small children and elderly people are squish-able , but he has yet to meet a living thing he doesn’t love. he has 0 pre-drive as we have a number of other animals as well, so I’m a bit confused by this behaviour. I will look up your online training program and see if I can find one that applies to us .

As a new English Mastiff owner (6 yo rescue) this was incredibly helpful. My past doggos all had a fair splash of the staffy, and this big boy has proved a bit of a mystery to unlock. Patience and time is key, we love our boy gleaming globs of drool and all.

I have had an English Mastador. I know not pure breed but after having my current Neapolitan Mastador I have already made the decision to get another English Mastador. If you raise them correctly with the right socializing and training they are amazing as adults. I can confidently take my dog for a walk without having a leash so I’m not worried about it getting caught in my wheelchair . Also I can let my 2 year old niece take the leash and they are so careful.

We used to have an English mastiff and she was a very sweet protective dog. We had to re home her and my dad's friend wanted her but they wanted to see how she would be with his Jack Russell terrier. He bit half of her right ear of and we knew that she wasn't going to fit there. She ended up going to a family that lived on a big property with a farm and the kids loved her. She was an amazing dog and was basically a second mom to us and them.

Our loving, beautiful EM Beauregarde AKC (GC grandparents) was amazing. In his prime, he was 34" at the shoulder 265 lbs of pure muscle. I'm a 5'3"130 woman married to a retired professional firefighter whose job necessitated. minimal 24 hour+ shifts away from home. Big Beau wlould sleep beside me on the 2nd floor bedroom. Any click of the downstairs doors, windows, etc.and Beau would be down the stairs like a shot! He was stubborn but responded incredibly well to both verbal commands and physical signals. Btw..he also happily lived alongside my Dwarf Holland Lop rabbit. ❤

@@michaelrobinson6670 any kind of dog will get bored, easily especially mastiffs if they’re not doing what they’re bred for. Or any stimulation etc etc etc etc. ive had a Pyrenees he was one of the best dogs ive had he was very good off leash he was very well obedient. With me not his past owners. I am looking to pickup either an English Mastiff or a St. Bernard as a mobility service dog for my father, both of us are experienced dog trainers, but I was getting scolded by some extended family for narrowing it down to those options because "those are not service breeds and you will fail because they are dumb." I am glad to see that one is a successful service animal.

We've got an English Mastiff x Rotti - he got full on crazy rotti genes but he is amazing with kids and other dogs - does not like strangers at all. He thinks he's still a puppy and doesn't know his own size are his only faults really and he needs to learn manners when we allow people in the house. He is the biggest magnet/velcro dog ever. He still gets cooked in about 5 -10 minutes which is great because my border x aussie and blue heeler x boston terrier don't wear out at all.... oh and the DROOL.... it's everywhere.... everywhere! We love them all
