The historic rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari during the late 60s berthed a period of incredible entertainment. It gave us memorable races, and forged historic references, but mostly, it gave us the GT40 and the 330 P4.
And while the GT40 has gone on to be remembered as one of the all-time success stories, the P4 hasn't quite enjoyed the same legacy. So, numbers may favour the Blue Oval's creation, but was it actually a better driver's car than the one from Maranello?
Let's get the opinions of two people who know both cars very well.

The Ford was built to win LeMans. The Ferrari was also built to win Targa Florio, Nurburgring, and all the championship races that Ford never bothered to enter. One of my fondest memories is helping to push 0846 up on the trailer after Sebring in 1966. I was 13.

Sorry, this is a misunderstanding of motoring at its most basic level. The whole point of any car is to take its occupants for m point A to point B and this is achieved with a simple formula, distance over time. So speed has two extremes, zero (get out and walk) or high speed. Note I didn't put a figure on high speed, that's what racing is for. In this comparison the GT40 clearly demonstrated which vehicle proved itself at being the 'best' at the basic level. What the Ferrari demonstrated was something which is subjective in all of us, it's called art. I must say, horses for courses, I love them both.

i believe he was saying the GT40 was easier to drive and took care of the driver. this old driver who i never heard of was saying the P3 was almost impossible to get 10/10th out of but felt better and was 'bespoke' a totally subjective adjective. the claim that the GT40 was 'mass produced' seems ridiculous there is nothing on this car that was not hand made and assembled. now the NSX was mass produced so you should compare it to the GT from what Abedin said here. i always wanted all these cars but the NSX i could have if i had really put my mind to it. instead i have an 98 SL500 with the V8 base for the Sauber C6 which had a better racing record than any of these great cars.

@@RammYou2 I think what the gentleman in the video meant is that Ford used tools of mass production to develop the GT40. Development is not just about manufacturing and assembly, it’s about design and test. There is no doubt that Fords huge resources stretched to CAD/CAM, they were one of the first to use advanced computer aided design and manufacturing tools to develop the prototype and test tolerances and reliability to destruction in an effort to win Le Mans ‘66. Their use of computers soon became standard practice throughout the motor Industry. Remington developed a revolutionary brake maintenance system for the GT40 as well, which gave them an advantage against the Ferrari P3 at Le Mans ‘66. Again, industrial assembly line know how, not bespoke just a different and more efficient way of doing stuff to save time in the pits. Ferrari were much more artisanal, bespoke and ‘slide rule old school’ in developing their cars. They simply could not afford to dial up advanced technology like what Ford did until they dropped themselves into the lap of FIAT and by then they already moved on from endurance racing and devoted their racing program 100% to F1 from the early 1973 onwards.

In, I believe the first book authored by Jackie Stewart, he begins one chapter - the book is about driving technique, how to be fast on a racing circuit - saying that he is often asked what was the best handling car he drove in his career. He doesn't give a clear answer, explaining that in racing it is all about setting up a particular car for a particular circuit and conditions. Then he goes on to say that the most satisfying experience he had in doing that was when he worked with Mauro Forghieri setting up the P4 he drove at the Brands Hatch BOAC race in 1967. That surprised me. I expected him to name an F1, perhaps Matra Ford or Tyrrell Ford.

@@trevor4533 So I am 85 years old and lived in Dallas, about 1990, when my son had a car that had to be dynoed at a shop (Norwood) that built Ferrari P4s. And I saw one (in for repairs - so I thought, just like a real one) and took pics. They said they could build one, on spec for about $200-300K, depending upon what Ferrari engine they could find. Anyway, I had raced an XK-140 Jaguar at Laguna Seca, for just one lap, and got out when I was passed by two Ferraris, and knew what that meant. It's not just the initial price. It is the ungodly expense of maintaining the car. In the pits they are constantly revvving, because the timing is set to acceleration, and they die if they are not accelerating. But it may be different today, with digital controls. Anyway, as I told my son. It's not just a car, it's a life decision to spend all your money. And if you do not get a prize, a really big prize, it is absolutely a losing proposition.

After seeing the movie and learning all about the GT40, I couldn’t help but to be intrigued by the 330 P4 and what made it such an amazing machine. It would seem that it (intentional or not) was made out to be the villain in the story of Ford’s successes in the 66 La Mans.. and I don’t think that’s fair. The 330 P4 should certainly receive the amount of respect that it very well deserves. The bottom line is that both Ford and Ferrari were responsible for developing these two very impressive and very capable race cars, neither were messing around when it came to these machines. Fortunately, some of the very best drivers the world had to offer at the time were able to steer these race cars to numerous victories.

It is genuinely wrong if someone intentionally wanted to depict Ferrari as a villain in this certain movie. What the Hollywood effect hides is that Ford motor company, an absolute giant in the business with enough wealth struggled for 5 years just to take victory at Le Mans from Ferrari, a motor racing based company which was once near bankruptcy and just few years from Alfredo (Dino) Ferrari's death. Plus the number of cars entered by Ford was much greater than Ferrari in 1966 increasing their chaces.

There was no negative connotation in terms of the 330 P4 - it was presented as the best of the best, the 'target' Ford had to beat to be the best, how anyone would see that as negative (villain?) is beyond me! As far as learning "all about" the GT40 from the movie, the movie covered about a drop in the bucket about the car - plenty on what it took to bring it to life - but SO LITTLE of the car itself. The movie wasn't about the car, it was about Henry Ford II going after Ferrari at Lemans because Ferrari insulted him, and what it took to put Ferrari in his place. While the movie wasn't entirely accurate (they freely admit it's not), it does accurately show that it took millions of dollars and years of development to outrun the Ferrari, and Ken Miles to dominate Lemans. The 'villains' in the movie were Ferrari himself - to unload that line of personal insults on people he'd never met - and Ford upper management, to take for granted the skills and intellect of everyone involved with the GT40, and Ferrari's well developed racing program. Remember, Ferrari didn't have to create a racing program, create a car, find drivers, and fight internal political battles to compete, Ferrari was the King. At it's core - this was an old fashioned 'grudge-race' except conducted across several countries and millions of dollars spent.

I just read many of the comments and realized people were making their judgements based primarily on the outcome of one race at one track in one year. To be fair there were two years where the Ford Gt40 and Ferrari P3, P4 competed. If you include all the races in Europe, Africa, North America, etc., There's a virtual tie with victories equal to each marque's multiple versions of Ferrari and Ford. The results, by victory, are equal. Neither one competed successfully in their Can-Am attempts.

Should not be comparing the 330 P4 to the GT40MkII which along with MkI and MkIII were a massed produced car. Instead it’s the Ford MkIV (sorry it’s not a GT40 no matter how people refer to it today) to which the P4 would be compared as they were the contemporaneous competitors to one another. The MkIV with its completely cutting edge honeycomb sandwich chassis was no mass produced vehicle. Where MkIV competed against P4, the Ford came out on top.

The GT40 might not be as pretty in an artisanal way as the P4 but it does have its own special beauty. For that era it had a very modern handsome and innovative industrial design. One of the first race cars with an engine custom designed and suspension calibrated by computer to win Le Mans. Ford might have been fledglings in sports car racing but their astronomical $$ funding ushered in a new wave of big business sports car R&D. Chapparal also brought a modern pioneering ‘new age’ angle to their cars and they were not gimmicks in professional sports car racing, as often found in consumer cars. In some cases they were truly ground breaking. American engineers really pushed the envelope to come up with something new in sports car racing and helped make it the Golden age. It was the Space race Cold War era after all, NASA were inspiring engineers of all flavours, and technology was God. They worked hard to make their image and products appeal to the young and capture market share, even down to low end consumer ‘performance cars’ having no more than go faster stripes slapped on the sides of the car.

Looks wise that overhang at the back looks a little big and flimsy on the Ferrari, the rear on the GT40s not perfect either but overall I prefer the Ford/Lola. Both fantastic car's though and this is just nit picking

The Ford GT or GT40 was never a Lola. Eric Brodley and Lola was only a design consultant and the Lola a test bed. The early GTs were built by FAV (Ford Advanced Vehicles) a Ford product through and through. I am a Ford GT historian.

Come dimenticare l'arrivo in parata a Daytona ?

The video refers generically to "GT40". There were smallblock Mk I, and big block Mk II and Mk IV machines, all very different. I suppose you could call Mk I a "series production" car, it certainly wasn't "mass produced". It was the "privateer car". The Mk II was more specialized and only a few were built, not to mention the mere dozen or so highly unique and very advanced Mk IV. All were essentially hand built. As for drivability, Gurney said the Mk IV was an easy driving car, to the point it was "fun" to drive-something he rarely could say about a competition car. I don't hear Andretti saying the Ferrari was better. (He simply says he always dreamed about Ferrari's, which makes sense for a racing driver of his era.) I only hear the motor journalist saying so. LOL. P4's were definitely nice cars, though.

The P4 is not arguably the most beautiful racing car. It is the most beautiful car full stop. I include the GTO, SWB, TR, 330LMB, and everything else from D Types, Lowdrags, Merc SSK's, Type 35's, 917's, Blower Bentleys, Alfa 8C's, Birdcage's, DB4GTZ blah blah blah. The Zenith is the P4. When you get to this level it's not realistic to pick the "best." Check out Jay Leno's episode dedicated to the '56 XJSS owned by Steve McQueen. This car is absolutely outrageous, so flamboyant and with the hardware back it up. While you're googling, try for images of the Jaguar XKSS. You'll see it from all angles, and it has no bad angles. Is it more beautiful than the Ferrari? As I say, when you get to this level, it's impossible to be fair.

i believe he was saying the GT40 was easier to drive and took care of the driver. this old driver who i never heard of was saying the P3 was almost impossible to get 10/10th out of but felt better and was 'bespoke' a totally subjective adjective. the claim that the GT40 was 'mass produced' seems ridiculous there is nothing on this car that was not hand made and assembled. i always wanted all these cars but instead i have an 98 SL500 with the V8 base for the Sauber C9 which had a better racing record than any of these great cars.

'More special'. Well, sure, they only made a very, very few of them. Exclusivity always appears to make things 'more special'. But they lost the race, all because Enzo infuriated Henry the deuce. Pity, really; had he found a way to get along with Ford, oh, what an incredible dominant combination that would have been. Just imagine, an affordable American sports car, with Ferrari influences to compete with the Corvettes of the time! Growing up in the U.S. back then, would have been a car enthusiast's dream!

Look, I like winners. There are few losers in history that I like the look of. The Ford GT is my poster car. Regardless of bespoke, exotic, and complex the Ferrari is alleged to be, they were thoroughly trounced for years by these alleged "kit" privateer cars. Perhaps the only loser car I can think of that I particularly like is the Penske PC-27.

Undisputably, the 330P4 is the most gorgeous racing car ever created. However, the title of the greatest road warrior of all time probably belongs to GT40, chassis 1057, one of only 4 cars ever to have won the Le Mans 24 Hours twice, the second time by a little over 100m.

Once upon a time ago at my marina, a gorgeous woman came off a boat and sauntered up the docks, her gossamer summer dress, backlit by a glorious July sun, flowing over her obviously fine and fit form, her long, bronze silken hair tousled by the breeze just so. All the men witnessing this passage were agog, to put it VERy mildly. One of these guys, though, was the (damn good) yard mechanic, Paul, a New England swamp yankee if there ever was one. Asked his opinion, he glanced over at this voluptuous vision and harrumphed, "Yeah, she's purty, all right, but can she stack firewood?" The Ford GT40 could stack all the wood you needed and then some.
