In this video, we're wondering if the Freewrite Traveler is still worth it after one year. After all, it's a pretty pricey typewriter...
But after giving it a year of use, I'm still really happy with it! In this video, I'll detail my experience with the Freewrite Traveler, from its pros to its cons.
So whether you're considering purchasing a Freewrite Traveler or not, be sure to watch this video to see my thoughts!

Thank you. Found this video helpful in reviewing the product. I have the clunky larger version and have decided on the traveller after many years of use. Like your honesty over the concept of being initially forlorn over opening the device after a period of rest. Its haunted me many times but helpful in the end for concentration.

Glad this was helpful! And yes, we all have that slightly haunted feeling but it is worth it for concentration :)

Great update thanks. I'm on a mission to find the perfect word processor, even got to fiddling with Raspberry Pi :). The new Alpha looks ok (and is more sensibly priced) and yet I keep coming back to this device...heart says yes, wallet says no :) Thanks also for addressing the questions about Lag as this is a bit of a deal breaker for me. One question: Is it possible to run offline completely and back up documents onto a USB stick? Thanks!
@AccessAlly
@AccessAlly 7 ай бұрын
I completely understand where you're coming from! It is possible to work completely offline and use a USB cord to export the content to a computer, but it doesn't have a USB port, you would use the wire that comes with it to connect to a computer first. :)

I think it would have been nice if they had made the screen a little larger, or made this the size of like an ipad mini with the keyboard, something about the tiny screen real estate just seems so constricting
@AccessAlly
@AccessAlly 10 ай бұрын
I hear you! I think it's a tradeoff between saving battery and making the screen bigger, possibly. It does feel a little constricting, but the idea is that you aren't reading what you wrote too much on this screen. :)

For me the tiny screen is perfect. I can’t see more than what is shown otherwise I will start re reading and editing. And if I start editing I’ll never finish

Is this practical for writing web copy? I do own a remarkable 2 with keyboard and I am wondering if this would benefit me
@AccessAlly
@AccessAlly 6 ай бұрын
That's a great question! I do think it is helpful for writing web copy. I use it to write everything from social media posts, email marketing, email newsletters, blog posts, and fleshing out ideas for other types of content. I think it depends on your process for writing web copy. Some people use a lot of "inputs" like voice of customer research, etc. which might not be "on" the Freewrite but could be printed out or on your Remarkable, for example, to refer to as you draft. :)

Is it possible to use a thumb drive to save files directly from the device instead of using their software?
@AccessAlly
@AccessAlly 10 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the device doesn't come with a USB port to connect to a thumb drive. I understand the hesitation with using their software, but I've found it to be pretty good and reliable so far. :)

@@AccessAlly i guess i found my answer here. I was checking it out thinking it was perfect for a distraction free experience. but the fact that you still need the internet to access your files for editing is probably the stupidest design flaw ever. what a really bad design choice. I'll just wait for a good e-ink tablet for writing instead.

How common is this device? It has been out for ages and no one has said anything. Who is the target market?
@AccessAlly
@AccessAlly Жыл бұрын
I think it's an extremely niche product at this point, and mainly used by writers.

No, that isn't something you can do with this device. That would be something you can do on your computer, once you get ready to publish or otherwise get your text into another format :)

I recommend checking out this subreddit all about their products, and doing a search - people who have found alternatives they like better or that were more affordable will often mention them here: www.reddit.com/r/Astrohaus/

Just for perspective, a lot of creatives suffer from imaginations that leave them vulnerable to distraction 😅 If you want modern features in your word processor, that usually means software, but now you have to deal with the temptation of doing ANYTHING but writing lol. Don't want those distractions? Your choice is either an analog typewriter, a cheap alphasmart with no modern features, or a handful of e-ink typewriters in this cost range. It's a niche product that solves a very real productivity issue for a lot of people.

Not so long ago you could get an Alphasmart Neo2 for like 15 bucks. Now they go for much more but it’s still preferable to this.
