HEY GUYS!
Much to my reluctance I am making this video. I did not want to make this at all, but I am doing so because so many of you asked me to. I am making this video strictly to let you all know my thoughts and opinions on the religious side of this curriculum and the recent controversy surrounding it. These are my thoughts feelings and opinions, and you are free to have yours.
I am keeping the comments open: however, I will be closely monitoring them, because my channel is not a place of malice, hatred, or arguing! Thanks for watching the longest video ever, I had a lot to say.

This Gathered Nest it’s so shocking! I can’t believe in 2018 people are against a curriculum purely because of the creator’s faith. It has nothing to do with truly what is in the curriculum. People are purely upset with Jenny as a person. It’s terrible. Ridiculous!

Hey Angela. I follow you. I think if you knew full history and background on the Mormon church you'd get it. I live in an area 99% Mormon, and it is a cult. Their Jesus is not ours. If you want some resources to read yourself, I can recommend some!

Absolutely agree with you! I'm on a Christian Homeschooling Large Family group on Facebook and every time TGATB comes up people say, "Oh, No way. The creator is Mormon. I don't want to support a Mormon business." The second I ask those questions- Do you give your money to Target? Starbucks? Walmart? Disney? Chipotle? Any and all money spent at those businesses and countless more go to people who vehemently disagree with your beliefs yet you support them- People get angry. 'That's different. Those are corporations. It's different.' Nope. It's not at all. They all started as small businesses by people of all beliefs and the money still goes back to thousands, if not millions of people who disagree with their patrons. If a product is good, buy it. It doesn't mean you're agreeing with their beliefs, just that you appreciate a product they create. The insanity over this topic is mind-boggling. And no, I'm not LDS- also "non-denominational," "born-again" Christian. Thanks for having the courage to put it out there.

It's even more ironic because it is a lay church. There are no professional pastors etc. who are getting paid. They also have a massive worldwide humanitarian organization which is accessible to everyone no matter their faith.

I’m so excited to see this video! I am not LDS but we are choosing to use TGATB for science and high school this upcoming year. If I were to see anything I didn’t agree with religiously, in this curriculum or any other, it’s my job as the parent to use that as a teaching moment with my kids. I don’t know of any curriculum out there where I would agree 100% with everything the creator’s believe. Thanks so much for this video!

Thank you! Very well said! I, too, have been blown away by the way people are getting all up in arms about this curriculum. I started using the free language arts program and shared about it on my blog several months ago, and as a non denominational Christian, I wasn’t aware Jenny was LDS, nor did I find anything in the curriculum that leaned toward any denomination. I had some questions about it, and seriously, this is not the hill to die on. There are so many greater things to worry about!

Amen Ashlee! I have heard about the controversy. I researched what I wanted to use and picked The Good and The Beautiful for it's #1 strong academics, #2 Charlotte Mason influence (planned for me), and #3 faith-based. My family is strong and solid in our faith so I wasn't concerned about another faith's influence (which there is none!). My kids are learning SO much this year and are catching up beautifully to where they need to be. I couldn't be happier! Thanks for having a backbone- that is why I have followed you for so long girl!!!!

I am also grateful for the people who worked so hard to put it together, and for the opportunity to download for free, which is very generous. I am also nondenominational Christian I love your Chanel. I actually enjoy telling other homeschool moms that the curriculum is from a LDS lady just so I can see their face lol. I was so scared when I saw the title of this video because I was so excited about this curriculum and I was so scared that something was actually wrong with it my heart dropped but I’m glad you still enjoy it.

Love your new bedspread! I see both sides of this discussion regard TGATB curriculum. It doesn’t have doctrine in the lessons from the stuff I’ve had, but I do see the “where my money is going” side. At the same time, I borrow library books and informational materials from authors whom I don’t know their faiths, personally. I’m still praying through this one. ❤️

Great video. I’m not LDS but I have friends who are like my family that are. I’m well versed in the religion for a non member and it boggles my mind why people are so hung up on Jenny being LDS. As all have said and the curriculum shows there is no LDS in the curriculum. She gives supplements for free to LDS members that do want the tie in. What other curriculum does that? Thankful for people like you who see the company for what it is and not discriminate against it. 🙌🏻 *We’re using History, Science and LA from TGTB!!!

We recently started using TGTB (because I couldn't wait til fall) and we LOVE it!!! Only six lessons into History 1, but I've read through the curriculum and couldn't be happier! Our almost 8 year old never cared about history, but now she asks to do her lessons! Your excitement about TGTB was contagious. I hopped online, researched, and ordered as soon as I could. I'm LDS, and I just wanted to say thank you for this. It's hard to be so discriminated against in the homeschooling community. It was one of the most surprising things to be about about homeschooling, to be quite honest. So thank you for having the courage to say what you think is right in spite of the backlash you've dealt with. I hope with time the Christian world will stop looking at members of the LDS faith through a lens of fear and prejudice, and realize that we are just people trying our best to follow Christ.

There is so much I could say about this. First I have been out of touch while traveling with my family this month. When I reconnect I find people leaving this curriculum because of who made it not what is in it. I was concerned then I see what you have to say on the topic. It is a hard thing to address as it can be so emotional. You covered it very well. All I can add is thank you for standing up and in some way being counted. Right on! Nicely said. Many are overly offended now days and almost appear shocked when someone doesn't believe or have the same convictions as themselves. I think sometimes people think if they say something loud enough and enough times others might change their mind, choices, even religion. That's not how it works obviously. THANK YOU SO MUCH, for this video!!! I've watched several negative videos recently on why so-and-so isn't using TG&TB, and it was so disheartening to see them slam this amazing curriculum because they disagree with something that's not even in the curriculum. I've used lots of curriculum over the past 13 years that I've not agreed with every belief of the author, but found the curriculum to meet our needs and be something beneficial to our homeschool. One video touted that because of their platform people look to this person to lead them and they couldn't keep using TG&TB because of Jenny's being LDS, and even though nothing was in the curriculum and it was working great for their kids, they were switching. Not only that but then made a video slamming TG&TB. It was very sad to see. As Christians we should be promoting things that bring out the good and beautiful, teach kids to be discerning, teach concepts well, make a homeschool mom's life easier, and point our kids to God....all of which this curriculum does. THANK you Ashley, for speaking your heart on this topic, and speaking up for a really great curriculum! Love your video!! 😊

I want to thank you so very much for this video. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day and we are starting homeschool this year with my little one. We joined a Christian homeschooling community that I am so excited about. It was recommended to me by my community director that we look into using TG&TB for the other portions of curriculum that we would need to get because it was written by someone of my faith. As I was looking into it and watching videos of how it was implemented and what people thought of the curriculum I found a lot of criticism towards Jenny and the materials because she is a member of my church, people not wanting to purchase from her or not wanting to appear to be associated with her because of her faith. I started to feel a pit in my stomach and a tremendous fear, as we had not met all the moms in our Christian homeschool group, that we might not be well received by some, that maybe it was more common for Christians to not want to associate with us than I had thought. I want to thank you for helping me to feel a reassurance that we will be just fine. Even if not everyone is ok with us I received a greater trust and confidence that as we love others I know we will find others that love us too. I know this video was an answer to my prayers. Thank you for YOUR defending love and support. I so appreciate it!

That said... we have prayed to the Lord about what curriculum to use and the Holy Spirit led us to The Good and The Beautiful! And we LOVE the enriching material from TGAB!!! It has been a God-send for sure, and our family couldn't be more grateful to have such treasures to teach. Plus, they're full of such good morals & values! We do not link ourselves up with mormon theology, as there is none of that in there from what we found. Simply enough, we just adore the curriculum. :)

I'm new to homeschooling altogether and feel truly blessed to have found your channel, you have no idea! I definitely don't want to copy or do what anybody does on KZbin but I feel inspired by you. Your are an amazing mom. A super Mom in my book. Staying prayed up in my own homeschool journey. It's not an easy nor does it have to be so complicated, with God's help it's all possible. Thanks so much for sharing and for keeping it positive. We all need to practice being more positive humans Christians or not. 💖

This is the 2nd video I've seen that comes from this same stance, that you've looked through every page and there's nothing that you saw that would go against your christian faith. Thank you for posting this! I've not seen this in person yet, just quick look throughs so far of the free portions (and I will be going through it more before using it for the kids, just as you both have suggested), but with all the drama about it, it made me leery...because of these 2 videos, I have decided to go ahead and use it for the LA for my 4 kids next year, which helps us immensely with it being free!

I’m a Mormon. I was SHOCKED this week to see the home school mom/KZbinr this week who dumped this curriculum NOT because of the course content, but because she didn’t like the religion of the person who created it. Ash, I was SOOOO happy to see your kind and non-judgmental video here. Thank you! So everyone knows, Mormons are Christian! We believe Jesus Christ is the savior of the world and it is only through his grace that we can be saved. I read the Bible daily like most Mormons. Yes, we have some doctrinal beliefs hat are different than other religions. ALL religions have some differences! To see others who take our belief in Christ and hate us enough to not even read a book to our kids because we are Mormon is so tragic! What is so disgusting about our belief in Christ that we need to be treated this way? Anyway, thank you for your EXCELLENT response video here. Subscriber for life!

I'm sorry on behalf of all those who aren't LDS, that people are uneducated about LDS and in their ignorance have persecuted you so harshly. In 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 it clearly tell us to be united in Christ. You would think fellow believer would come together in Christ, but Satan loves to divide. Again I'm truly sorry about all this.

Loved how you handled this topic. The reason many of us choose to homeschool is to have some control over the content that is taught to our children. There have been many times over the years where either I felt a topic was introduced too early or wasn't appropriate and I have simply skipped it or turned it into a teachable moment. You are going to find these types of situations regardless of the curriculum you are using. The choice to homeschool is a personal one and we need to respect how we choose to homeschool our children and focus on supporting one another as we endeavor to teach our children to be life long learners.

Thanks for this video. It was worth while doing. One clarification is that not all the curriculum is available for free online, just a couple of levels of LA, not science or history. I have used 1 level of LA, using history now and have used several science units. I haven't noticed any doctrinal influencing material. But something small in history one day made me think 'that was a political statement'. As you stated we all need to think things through and decide for ourselves, no matter who or what company makes the curriculum.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I think people are focusing on all the wrong things with this curriculum. You’re not going to find another curriculum that’s as comprehensive and thorough while still being as inexpensive as TGTB. And I have no reason to defend them bc we’ve only used the PreK stuff so far, but I looked over every inch of the free levels and there’s nothing in them that’s cause for this much alarm. I appreciate Jenny Phillips and her heart behind providing curriculum that seeks to foster love and kindness in our kids. ❤️

Thumbs up from me! I'm a Mormon (same religion as the creator of The Good and the Beautiful) and it amazes me how many fellow Christians are so eager to judge and attack us for our beliefs. We believe that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world and we cannot be saved without his grace--just like any other Christian believes. As with ALL Christians, we have doctrinal differences in our beliefs, but we all have Christ in common. We study the same Bible as you and want to be good, kind people--just like you. It's time for the world to stop hating each other for our religious beliefs. Remember LOVE THY NEIGHBOR? I don't live my life as the Amish, but I appreciate their devotion to their beliefs and recognize them as fellow believers. I don't recognize Saturday as the day of worship and rest, but I still appreciate the love for Christ the Seventh Day Adventists show. Catholics don't use birth control, but I recognize them as fellow Christians. We are all on the same team. I'm not saying differences between religious doctrinal differences don't matter, but I AM saying that we need to show brotherly/sisterly love for our fellow believers.

YES to pretty much everything you have said! The comments about not wanting to financially support an LDS person have blown my mind - JetBlue, Marriott, Lularoe, Franklin Covey, Sky West - these are all Mormon companies. We also have a lot of members that are lawyers, doctors, dentists, etc. Our prophet, Russel M. Nelson, helped to pioneer the first heart and lung bypass machine, and I believe performed the first open heart surgery using it. So if you've ever had a kid that needed open heart surgery you were in a way supporting a Mormon. Anyway...sorry to go off on a tangent, it's just so frustrating reading some of the comments regarding this curriculum and the LDS faith.

Thanks for sharing this hard video. Quick background on me, I am not LDS, I have used a variety of HS curriculum, and decided (partly based on your videos & others) to try TG&TB this year. I do not strictly pick curriculum based on our faith with the exception of our main religion curriculum. Why? Because I look at the content of the curriculum for each subject and decide what I think will work best for my kids. After doing Sonlight & others that require many different books for LA, I loved the thought of everything being in 1 book. So, I did my research. I watched review videos, looked at the curriculum itself online, prayed, and ordered it. And I’m really excited for us to get started with it this month. I was very shocked when several KZbinrs came out recently to say they changed for the reasons they did. Now, I totally agree with you - everyone has a choice - they do, you do, I do, etc. I do not share their reservations, but that’s ok. I don’t have to. I am still going to use what I purchased, and I’m just as excited as I was before all this started. As always, I enjoyed your video and am looking forward to the next one!

I am a big fan of your channel and love everything you stand for. I strongly support your stance here. It's a very basic and reasonable boundary that this is your channel, your personal platform for your own thoughts, a place where it is never appropriate to attack you over your beliefs or opinions. On a personal note, we are secular homeschoolers and have used a lot of curriculum or other material that doesn't align with our beliefs. If ever there is something too difficult to turn into a learning experience or work around in some way, we - as you said - simply turn the page. At worst, we can put it down and use something else, because no one is forcing us to work with it. NEVER would it even occur to me to attack the creator of the curriculum or the person whose recommendation became the reason I purchased it, even if I thought we had the same belief system or ethical standards. It is shocking to me that anyone has the gall or inclination to do so in this situation. I am not Christian or LDS, so some may think I have no business chiming in. However, I believe moral standards for how humans treat each other should (and do) transcend religious differences. You have a lot to offer the homeschool community and have helped many people just by sharing your journey. I hope this experience doesn't turn you away from what you've built here.

I’m so glad you did this video, and absolutely commend you for your bravery. You hit the nail on the head stating that everyone is sharing their opinions on their videos. It is up to each of us to personally take those opinions and formulate our own after our own extensive research. I’m new to all of this, I am trying to set up for one the most monumental decision I’ve made in my life, that happens to affect not just me, but the lives of my children. It really saddened me to see all the negative comments and “bashing,” of other’s faiths. This is why the world is the way it is... it’s probably one of the many reasons why religion is banned from public schools, because of people’s pettiness and indifferences. I am Catholic, and have poured myself over many curriculums for months, trying to decide which will be best for MY family. I have prayed, talked it over and over in my mind and with my husband, changed my mind, changed it again, and finally settled on some of TGTB’s curriculum, knowing that the creator of the program is LDS. She clearly states it on her website! It’s no secret! It’s important to do our own research via whichever program’s website we are considering and use KZbin videos as a platform to see how others are doing with it. As a first time homeschooling mom to be, it’s sad to see this happening within a community that needs rallying together to uplift each other not put each other down for such nonsense. I’m trying to raise kids who are yes, strong in their faiths, but who also know about other’s beliefs, and can respect that not everyone is the same. I am trying the hand them the world as their classroom, not shelter them. Anyhow, thanks a lot for the call girlfriend!! 😁

Thanks, Ashlee. I like your channel and thanks for making a tough video. My wife are solid in our faith and while I do like very much that your content stems from a Christian perspective, I really like the content you provide because it helps me appreciate and support my wife. We are going to start homeschooling this year for 2 of our 3 school age children. Accepting early on that I am to play a supporting role and that my own homeschooling experience was not good, I want to give my wife and family the support we need to make homeschooling right for our family. Karrie, (my wife) and I set our family on this path because we want great things for our kids and take seriously our vocation as parents. Many of our reasons are similar to yours in that video that you put up regarding your reasons for homeschooling and why you continue. We reached those conclusions through long and prayerful consideration. She feels overwhelmed at times with all of the options open to home schooling families and your videos help me by offering honest and real perspective, which in turn allows me to offer better advice and support to my wife. Our best to you and your husband, and thanks for letting us in on a little bit of your life.-Keith and Karrie.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the matter. I am new to homeschooling (as the Mom. I was homeschooled from 1st grade on) and have thought and prayed about what to use from the moment I found out I was pregnant with my first born. I now have a 3 yr old and 1 yr old and am at the point of starting at Pre-k level. I stumbled upon TGTB while researching other curriculum and instantly fell in love. I did as you suggested and downloaded the free one and read through it. And one of the first things I knew about it was the creator is Mormon (by her statement) and she strived to make a “faith based non denominational” curriculum that’s shows the love of God! And as a Baptist pastors daughter who attends a Calvary chapel church, I am still happy and in love with what she has created and plan to use it with all my children and would only stop if it no longer fit my families needs. Keep up the good work 😊 and I very much enjoy your channel and content.
