My tip would be to always remember you are mom FIRST--and teacher second. Your relationship with your kids is always more important than the curriculum.

Listening to your kid's heart💓💓💓💓Yes! Have your spouse's support, Expect resisstance! It's not you as a teacher! You're going to be different! People are going to judge you! Be patient, don't worry and think they would do better in public school. The rewards are everything! It is so worth it! You can never replace the time and bond that comes with homeschool. I wish I had seen this before I started homeschooling 3 years ago. I love this advice! Yes! Thank you for making this video!

Great tips and all true!! We homeschool, we pulled our two boys out of public school and they had some friends established so don't take this close friends away if possible. My second grader had two really special friends in school and that was the hardest thing for him at the time not seeing his buds every day....so I make sure to nurture those special friendships with playdates throughout the month and they do see each other during club sports so that helps to. We don't have a co-op so meeting other homeschooling friends is more challenging for our family, we do have one family that were close with that homeschool as well and our boys play often with them. So that's my add in... nurture those friendships if possible. My boys love being home and having the freedom to move about more during the day but they have each other to play with everyday, but having one or two special friends is important....in my eyes!!

We are new to homeschool... and even though I taught public school for 12 years, somehow staring at my two sons was incredibly intimidating! I was so confident in a classroom, but somehow felt wildly inadequate in front of my own children!! Thank you for your tips!!! Especially not to try and do public school in your homeschool! Thank you!! This really helped a lot!

This is good advice. I took my kids out at the end of the year. We had some good talks, and then we deschooled all summer long. They say you need more than that for kids their age(middle school), but I didn't have any trouble. Flexibility and being willing to tweak things, and being willing to let go of your mental ideal of a perfect homeschool will go a long way!

They are all so different but I can see where they each need more help than school can offer. More time with me I know is one thing they ask for in their own way. God has been stirring my heart about this subject and I'm praying, reading, listening to his word and of course homeschool info everywhere. I'm super nervous. I've had experience teaching sunday school and summer bible school for years on and off but having them all day I know might be a challenge. Im still praying and researching. Also, there aren't any homeschool groups nearby where I live. My kids have a few friends who are in public school but it would be nice having some who are homeschooled. I took my grandkids out of private school this year because of COVID19 but considered it beforehand because of challenges my 9 year old was having with peers and school staff. He is ASD and was being bullied. HIs sister started Kindergarten last year and we found the environment to create a great deal of stress for her. She is a perfectionist and the conformity expectations were very difficult for her. COVID19 made it a jumping off point. It has been a struggle to transition, but I know in my heart it is the right thing for both. I hope to find that rhythm we need and truly appreciate all of the tips. I worry about friendships for them. They have each other but I know they enjoy other children their ages. I hope to find a co-op. Fortunately, I do know a few families that are homeschooling and are my kiddos' ages but everyone is locking down with the Virus. We just haven't found the bubble to join. Thank you for making the video, it has helped to remind me of the other reasons our family needs to do this.

Thank you for this. I needed to hear this. I’m about to go head on with homeschooling my kiddos. My first grader’s last day of public school was on Friday, which was actually the last day for the county. I’m nervous and feel like I need to go through a process of unschooling too. I also have a 3 year old I will be doing pre-k with instead of sending her to preschool. Then of course my 6 month old when her time comes. Did you feel a sort of sadness when taking your kids out? I know this is the best thing for my children and it’s been a long time coming. My reasons align to what you shared, however, I have been feeling a bit like I’m taking something away... the school, teachers and staff were great, but her experience with some kids wasn’t. I’m not trying to shelter them, as I know there’s dangers everywhere. I’m just wondering if others have felt the same way?

Totally one hundred percent agree with all of this. I pulled my fifth grader halfway through the year and he has been fighting me tooth and nail. I did know this was going to happen though. I homeschooled him in third as well and we fought the entire year (which is why he was back in school the next year, he drove me crazy!) I expected the resistance when I pulled him this time. This time around though, I have more experience. I’ve been homeschooling his two younger brothers who have never been to a formal school so we have more social connections, know more about curriculum and about not recreating school at home. I did however make the mistake of trying to bring home some of the school’s habits to make the transition easier for him. It didn’t last long. We ended up dropping all those habits within a few weeks. Then I made the mistake of expecting to do a lot with him. Didn’t last either. We are doing the basics, math and ELA. For everything else, the mentality is “if it happens, it happens.” Im not pushing. We will build up slowly, as you suggested.

Thank you, very much for sun an inspiration and optimism! Here is to add to be ready for negative comment. I have heard (not once) a comment from my child friends - "Oh, I am sure it's fun, but it's low grade and you are not going to be as smart as us..." (She was in private christian school!) Quite upsetting for my daughter. But I know it is not true. )))

Hi Ashlee! We have a 3 year old and 7 month old. My 3 year old is currently in a preschool co-op group (meet ups are every Tuesday morning). It's upsets me how judgemental people and family are about not sending our child to a preschool facility especially because we are Hispanic and who is Hispanic that homeschools? One reason is because we want to spend more time as a family. I also use the phrase its what is working for our family 😁

This is an old video by now! I wasn’t even pregnant with my youngest when it was made (any my youngest is 5 now!). I’m half way through only my third year of homeschooling my oldest and the ONE thing new homeschooling parents need to keep in mind is that it takes the public schools 7+ hours a day because they have tons of students, class changes, disruptions, etc. It will take us, at home, a fraction of that time. Kindergarten was an hour and a half. First grade was two hours. Second grade is maybe 2 and a half hours. I expect it to get longer as I start schooling my youngest this fall as well, and as they get older. But I don’t ever expect to be schooling for seven hours a day. We also only do four days a week. My son’s drive for learning has only increased too. Homeschooling doesn’t kill the natural love of learning, where I feel public school does.

Valuable insights and takeaways here, for those (like me) who are just now looking into homeschool groups. Instinctively (perhaps) I have avoided getting involved with homeschool support groups & co-ops. However, I'm beginning to think that I do need to branch out... Thank you for sharing - honestly - and in such great detail. The manipulation, triangulation, and retrospective sense of feeling used (which you described here) seems consistent with one or more of the individuals involved having narcissistic personality traits & agendas. Remember, not all those who profess belief in Jesus Christ are truly His. But those who are true believers are to be known by their agape love, one for another. Though I'm very sorry you had to experience this hurt, I'm glad you did the right thing. We all have to count the cost of maintaining godly virtue & integrity, right? I'm also thankful you seized the opportunity to use this awful experieince to encourage so many! Blessings of continued healing and peace to you, in Yeshua Jesus' holy name. 🙌🏻🕊❤

I stumbled upon your channel today and I'm so thankful I did! My daughter is 3 and we're considering homeschooling her when the times comes. Hearing stories from mom's who are there right now is so helpful in the decision making process. Can't wait to watch more of your videos! God bless! :-)

Just withdrew my 2 boys from public school; 6th and 9th grade, and enrolled them in Abeka. I am very excited but they are not.

Hello. Im planning on homeschooling my 7 year old daughter, shes having a hard time at school and breaks my heart seeing her everyday with her sad face and almost in tears, she was bothered by another kid and that change her, but the school doesn't want to admit that . so now she just beg me not to go to school.

Do your children miss public school at all? My kids are miserable at school, which is one of the many reasons we are planning on homeschooling. I'm just worried they will get tired of homeschool or that it won't be what they excpect.

@@GraceandGrit I did, thanks so much. I really needed these right now when I have been doubting myself and my reasons for homeschooling. I have 3 adult children and now a 4 year old. I always felt called to homeschool but never did. Now with my 4 year old I am stepping out in faith. I have seconded guessed myself a lot. This was so helpful.
