FYI, the CompTia Security+ exam is required to work with the U.S. government or any agencies. Same for Canada. Upon completion of this class, Google gives the student a ±30% coupon for taking the Sec+ exam. On a side note, I just checked Coursera here in Spain, and it's listed at 53 euros/month.

I'm finishing up a Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity in December and decided to use the Google Cybersecurity Cert to brush up on some stuff. I'll just say, it may be the best learning platform I have used for basic level security tasks. On top of good explanations and highlighting key terms, the labs are great at showing concepts in action, and the quizzes do a good job of highlighting the important aspects. It's definitely a good certification to learn the basics of the field. I'm through 5 of the modules in about 4-5 days now but that is mostly because I already know most of the information presented (still have learned a good deal as well). I also have not done the portfolio stuff just yet. I want to go back and do them after I complete the entire training to see what I retained from the courses. I would recommend this as a great start to learn the basics of Cybersecurity if you have no background in it. Very impressed with it.

@@tylertemple1355 Probably not the best person to ask here because I already have an in with a company due to my Bachelor's degree but if I didn't have that I would probably go straight into getting Sec+. Sec+ is a more recognized certification currently and will probably at least get you into an interview. I'd make sure and do the portfolio stuff and build that during the Google cert so you have the ability to show a company that you can do entry level types of skills.

I've been loving the Google cybersecurity certificate. To give some context, I entered a Master's of Science program for national cybersecurity studies (security studies, international relations, and cybersecurity). I came from a non-technical background and struggled. This certificate is helping me prepare for my graduation exams and Comptia Security+. This cert is helping fill the gaps of cybersecurity knowledge I didn't learn in my program. Like, my masters never touched SIEM tools or python. We barely touched on Linux for cyber incident handling. Overall, this certification is excellent in addition to other certificates/work experience.

I just finished course 4. Ive been completing one course a day. Edit: just completed course 5, wasnt as bad as course 4 in terms of amount of labs. For every lab, there is one required and one optional. I have been doing the required ones and not the optional Edit 2: just completed course 6, wasnt too bad honestly. Probably would’ve taken longer but i am focusing on concept comprehension rather than application. Knowledge application can come once I have the certification so I can avoid paying $50. My plan is to wake up tomorrow and finish course 7&8 in one day. Will update. Course 1: 3 hours Course 2: 3 hours Course 3: 4-5 hours Course 4: 8 hours Course 5: 4-5 hours Course 6: 3-4 hours Course 7: 2.5 hours (this is the python course, i personally do not like the this section, as the labs do not show you the correct answer alot of the time. In python, sometimes you will output an answer instead of an error, making you believe its the right code. But if you never see what the code is supposed to look like then you wont know if you did it correct. I preferred the reading in this section over the labs, but thats just my personal opinion. This is coming from someone who had somewhat of some python experience in the past. This course could've taken me alot longer, but I ended up just using the reading to complete the weekly quizzes.) Course 8: 1 hour Will update as i finish. I have prior SQL experience and slight prior linux experience. Havent reached the python part yet. My goal is to finish 1 course everyday so i should be done in 4 days. I already work from home so i have infinite time to finish it. Hopefully i can get a job with the certification alone. Final Update: The certification took me 6 days to complete. Ended up avoiding the $50 fee. Pretty good course overall. Goes over alot of things, and gives hands-on practice.

Hi Shane, in week 2 of this course. I really like Google's course format, it's a good mix of media and it moves fairly quickly. I have a long background in IT, but most of my jobs were admin or tech help/operations, so I did everything from install software to run social media to order cakes for the department. It's been hard as a freelancer to create an identity so I'm hoping my move into cybersecurity will create a more defined path. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I was able to complete the course within the 1 week free trial by doing it full time/non-stop for a week straight. I did have some previous python and linux experience though. I don't work in the field but am considering it and felt that doing the course was a good use of my time. EDIT: I just wanted to add that I ended up studying for Sec+ for a month. I just took the exam and I passed! Although the Sec+ studying took a lot longer than the Google Certificate and goes much more in depth, I have to say I'm so glad to have done the Google Cert because it was a great way to learn the fundamentals.

It’s been a year or so since I’ve got to learning and figured this would be a nice way to brush up on my skills. This course is actually not bad lol. Im actually surprised at the level of delivery and information they teach you. I’m one week in and I’ve been completing a course a day. But I only did 3 days so far out of the week. For those whom are skeptics about it. For beginners, it’s a great start for an introduction to the basic fundamentals of a wide range of topics in cybersecurity. Plus having a Google cert on your portfolio and/or resume is a bonus. But do explore other certs after. I do have 4 other certs. GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!

Something to be aware of, the average salaries you see posted on these websites depend Highly on what 3rd party marketing company the company you're looking at uses. A lot of companies use these 3rd party companies to give them estimate ranges on salaries based on the position and region to determine what your starting salary could be. Most companies can potentially use the low side of a salary range to start you out at. So something to keep in consideration when shopping around. Don't look at median salary, take the whole range into consideration.

As a tip, I will advice following guys: 1) Use some notepads tools like notion to keep all info 2) Don't focus to learn and remember each detail, it will be better to note it 3) You need know core principals like mostly used security tools, and e.g. what the difference among WAF, firewall and IDS 4) You will not remember all the things once you will start to use them on everyday basis 5) cmon guys, PCI dss standard has 250 pages, I will never remember it one I started use it. When you have 10 messages per day from your client what the requirement is, and you will ten times answer them - good job, now you really learned some stuff. So don't panic, be patient)

I've learnt a great deal with this course to advance my IT knowledge so that I can get a new job, hopefully as an IT entry Helpdesk role. If you're new to IT you won't be able to finish this in a few days as you really do need to learn all the information givin in the courses from the top of your head if asked in an interview as it's essential IT knowledge for any IT role. In interviews they can ask you anything and you will need to give a description of why you have done that troubleshooting method ect. You will also need to describe what any abbreviations mean and do for example, DNS, DHCP, 2FA ect and give descriptions of these and how to solve any issues relating to them. I definitely think this is a fantasic course for anyone wanting to get in to IT.

Im taking the class now, without it I wouldnt even know what to look up to study. Now that I know better there are many free tools that teach you the basics. Looking into learning Linux, python, and possibly getting my network+ first and land an it desk job, then study for the sec+ and a+. Recent life events have me without work so im using my free time to learn.

Hi Shane, Requesting you to kindly review the new IBM Project Manager and IBM IT Project Manager certificates and it would be great if you can compare it with the Google Project Management certification. PS. I have completed the Google Project Management Certificate and your review did help me in my decision making. I will be waiting for your review of the IBM certificates. Thank you.

Guys, The American Dream Academy is partnering with Coursera and it's closing July 1st and you can get these certs for free through it. It's an absolute steal! I'm doing the Google Data Analytics cert for free right now. And there's 14 certs you can choose from like the IBM Cybersecurity Analyst cert. You lose nothing! No free trial, no $40 monthly, no need for financial aid. I know this sounds too good to be true, but I'm doing it right now and others have as well. Do not spend the money when you don't have to.

Im currently nearly finished after 4 days of spending average 5 hours per day on it. Currently on the 7th module, so on a good role. I would say I have some experience within IT as I have previously studied CCNA (albeit 16 years ago) plus have a BSc in computing (over 20 years ago). I have not really done anything within IT including programming for maybe...14 years, so as I'm getting older its time to find a career in something less physically demanding. I believe if you are very new to IT, this is not a good course for you as you will not really understand it properly, so a little background in systems, networking and some idea of programming will help a lot !

Though I'm not a "beginner" i have plenty of IT experience... I'm here sitting at 1 week and a half at most. With 3 chapters done. And im sure today i finish chapter 4 so make it; 1 week in a half for HALF of the certificate, for someone experienced in IT at various capacities. If you wanted a benchmark for the more experienced folks. For beginners... like no experience whatsoever... it'll take googling some stuff and taking good notes, investing a good couple of hours a day for sure. In order to progresss through some of the weeks as it gets in other topics you might be absolutely clueless about. Procrastination and/or cheating are weaknesses in this certiticate. You'll see where. You'll have to keep ethics on point and actually know your stuff. Not just get the paper that says you do. Dont ruin it for other people. Give it the respect. Enough for a job? Eh idk it depends. Enough for a "hey I know what I'm talking about"... I'd say mkay I'm listening. Cause yeah you do got the foundations with this course if you do apply yourself. Previous experience in IT helps a lot though.

Great to get the ball rolling, but reality says this cert means fuck all in job hunting, it is a great addition to the resume if anything albeit, sec +, and a bachelors will get you what you want in a reasonable amount of time. It's doable without a direct BS in the subject, but will take longer to accomplish by trade per se.

I'm 38 years old. I've worked in security most of my life, I've switched to working in a heavy mechanic shop most recently, but I've always been interested in getting into the IT field. I love computers and tech, I build my own PCs, ect. I unfortunately was never able to go to college. I want to make a career change and want to get into IT. Due to my work schedule taking up most of my time I was considering a Google Careers Certificate. Right now I'm leaning towards the new Cybersecurity certificate they made because it interests me more. But I've heard it might not help you get a job in the field so my backup plan is the IT Support certificate. My question is has anyone ever done this ay my age? I'm worried I'm too old that many companies might to be interested in hiring someone that is nearly 40. I'm just looking for general advice and I appreciate everything. Thanks

If a company doesn't hire you based on age that goes against the EEOC and employment laws. Race based discrimination shouldn't be tolerated. If you find a company that passes you on because of your age; sue and/or whistleblower the shit out of that company. They literally spelled out to you "you would hate working here." You'll do great!
