Hornady claim the HMR is capable out to 200 yards. In this video I put a group on paper in relatively calm conditions to see if that claim is true

Well done, nice shooting. I have regularly pushed my CZ 17HMR out to 175yards on rabbits in a completely dead calm, still air orchard, on summer evenings and never missed. (Hornaday 17 grain ammo). Instant kills on all shots. It is an amazing little caliber and although I love my .22LR semi autos for closer stuff (and a ton of fun!), my '17' will always be my go to rifle for serious and highly effective pest control work. Even with it's short barrel and a SAK mod, it never stops amazing me.

Nice video and hunting ethic too! I agree, the 17HMR can be quite capable out past 200 yards, on a calm day. Last range session, the last five-shot string off the bench, I put two rounds into the 10 ring and two inside the 8 ring, with one "flier" in the 5 ring on a standard 100yd small-bore rifle target... at 220yards. Love the 17HMR!

I finally threw my hat in the ring and bought a rifle in .17HMR. The rifle and ammo combo shoots sub 2" 10 shot groups at 200 yards. I'm really surprised by this rimfire! Thanks for the video, that's a really nice stock on your rifle. Looks like my Air Arms TX200❤

Good shooting my man. And those are some tight groups for 200 yards. I took my 17HMR Savage out to 225 yards and was consistently hitting 6 in. steel plates with the CCI Gamepoints 20gr. bullets. It isn't the best HMR rifle but I've been working on accurizing it, by working with varying torque settings on the action, and I'll soon be lapping the crown.

Nice vids. 1 MOA AT 200 yards with rimfire isn't something to be just modest about- especially with a very light projectile. I liked your CZ videos. I'm very much into .22lr rimfire at extended ranges. It becomes art besides finding the platform and ammunition.

I don't know how much Anschutz rifles are over there but around here that is a 1100 dollar gun here and a $500 sound silencer and that scope is probably a $800 scope here so you got around $2000 to $2500 into that gun and rangefinder kind of expensive just to go out and tinker with. Middle class people here in US don't have that kind of money just to play with don't get me wrong I would love to have a Anschutz but I will have to go with a Savage or a CZ 455. But keep the videos coming I like watching them they are informative

Great video Elliot. I might have a crack at a similar video and see how my Savage holds up. My only comment is the force the HMR has at 200 yards isn't enough to expand the bullet on a hare sized animal in my experience. I might do a similar video but try to figure out the best way to show impact force (maybe water bottles or maybe I can get some ballistics gel).
@TriggerPullTV10 жыл бұрын
Cheers pal. Interesting comment about the expansion. I might buy some cheap cans of fizzy coke to see what damage it does.

Presumably when you state the mildot drop you have the scope on 10x ? It's suprizing just how far the 17 can be accurate. Friend of mine shoots very tight groups at 300m using the 17 Fireball . Lethal on Charlie.

Hi Graham. The scope was actually set on x12 mag for those shots so it would be slightly less for x10 mag. I'm sure the .17 Fireball is lots of fun!

Really like your down to earth approch. Many peoples issues with the 17hmr stem from assumptions and lack of knowledge of wind. The 17hmr has become my go to for RTA and live stock euthanasia. No more lead bouncing off curbs or shed floors. Bullet goes to nothing and in most cases does not exist the animals body on frontal spine aligned shots, internal hemorrhage is catastrophic and brain death instantaneous. In respect of RTA if the animal has collapsed in an inaccessible spot 30-50 yards away then it is more than capable of a well placed kill shot. All of this with very little noise or disturbance, and excellent safety.

Colin Stewart it does get kicked around quite a bit more by the wind compared to the .22
@ColinS2167 жыл бұрын
the wind is a big factor in any shooting .. even my 308 can be out due to the wind but then that's at over 300 to 600 yards
@chriswoods15586 жыл бұрын
Not really. At comparable distances it does not. Okay, If you fired the .22lr and the .17hmr in a 10mph wind at 300 yards, the .17 would probably deflect more but you wouldn't even be able to see the target in the scope of the .22. At sensible ranges. 50 or 100 yards. The .17 deflects less because its going 2.5x faster so less time for gravity and wind to have an effect.

Defiantly agree. Buy 300 rounds, zero rifle. When you've shot all 300, give it a good clean and buy 300 more. Fire 10 shots and then recheck zero.

Have just found your channel and have subscribed and liked. At what distance was the rifle zeroed before taking the 200 yard shots? I've had numerous problems with Hornady V Max rounds, jammed in barrel, split cases, hang fires etc so changed to CCI 17 grain hollow point, after hundreds of rounds I've had not a single problem in the CZ 452. Many thanks for your time and effort.

for Aslan it's more of a test of consistency using factory ammo. In my opinion, it's not an everyday 200 yard cartridge. There's wind drift and the reduced expansion of the V-Max bullet to consider at lower velocities.
