Star Wars, Lord to the Rings, and Game of Thrones all took inspiration from Frank Herberts Dune.

Lord of the Rings was written ~20 years before dune was. Lord of thd Rings is what caused the boom in fantasy and syfy books.

Thanks for that reaction. Part 2 is a bit faster paced and pulls a lot of things together. I hope you'll take the opportunity to watch it. These 2 parts cover the first book of the series. I understand the script for Part 3 is about finished. That should cover the second book (as a minimum)

I appreciate you watching! I def will be checking out the second one soon. I really enjoyed this but before I do I want to do some more research so I have a better understanding going into the second movie. Wish I had the time to check out the books...

The nature of Paul’s prescience is such that he can catch glimpses of every possible future. So he was able to see and experience a whole lifetime of friendship with Jamis in one potential timeline, but that’s not what happened in this one. In the book, at Jamus’s funeral, he says “I also was a friend of Jamis”even though he didn’t get to actually experience his friendship in the real world.

That's really cool but also sad. Thanks for letting me know the deeper lore not explained in the movies. Can't wait to check out the second movie after everyone feeding me more knowledge and lore about the Dune universe

Star Wars is Dune for kids (or Dune is Star Wars for adults). Dune, the first novel in a series, was published in 1965 and is considered a science fiction classic. It obviously predates Star Wars by years, and because it is such a complex, densely written novel, it has been very difficult to bring it to film in a manner that does it justice. The David Lynch film from 1984 was a bit of a hot mess IMO, and appears almost campy now by comparison, though it did try to stay more true to the book than some changes Denis Villaneuve made in his version. Now that you have some familiarity with the Dune world, you will probably find Part 2 even more engaging. 👍

Wasn't sure when the books came out so it makes sense I saw so many parallels between this and what other movies have taken from this. I will be checking out the second one soon since I did enjoy this one. Just want to do some research first so I have a better understanding going into the second one. Appreciate the info!

@@RecliningCinema If you enjoyed the movie, you should check out the book. It is really good, with much more details and stories.

@@begombre One of these days I will when I can get the time. I enjoy reading and comparing books to movies. In most movie adaptations a lot of information is left out or creative changes are made. The best book to movie adaptation in my opinion is The Martian. That movie is almost the exact same as the book minus one scene not in the movie, prob cut for time/budget.

Dune is in our future... this happens in the 10,000 AFTER GUILD this 10,000 years after founding of the Spacing guild which is another 10,000 years from NOW so its really about 20,000 years FROM NOW

Gotcha, appreciate the info! I'd love to read the book at some point to get more knowledge but unfortunately I just don't have the time right now

In Dune lore, all their weapons are laser based (lasguns) and in their current state, their shield technology is nuclear based so they live in a universe where they really can’t shoot at each other in close combat, therefore they wield swords in close quarter combat. And that’s why every house has a sword master, being an emissary from a planet that specializes in that. Like Duncan Idaho. The movie doesn’t explain it thoroughly enough, but it is against imperial law and religious law to create artificial intelligence and that’s why spice is needed for all the different houses and schools of expertise to master those techniques like the mentats, which are humans trained with the processing power of a computer, the spacing guild which charts space by using spice and the Bene gesseret truthSayers, also the suk doctors like yueh the traitor. Dune part one definitely would’ve benefited from a prologue like Lord of the rings did in order to lay the foundation of exposition.

This is the type of info I need before going into the second movie lol. I appreciate all the info on this as it will better help me understand the Dune universe. There's a lot to learn about this world

They talk about the Emperor, but you don't see him in this first movie. The evil bald guys are Harkonnens, another great house just like the main character's family the Atreides. The Harkonnens are led by the Baron, the floating fat badguy. They were put in charge of spice production by the Emperor, but then the Emperor took that fief away from them and gave it to the Atreides. On the surface, its to make it look like he's showing favor to the Atreides, who are popular with the other houses. The reality is that the Atreides have become one of the strongest and most liked of the great houses and the Emperor, fearing their power, wanted to get rid of them. By giving spice production to the Atreides, its gives the Harkonnens the legal right to wage war (the great houses are allowed to fight amongst themselves, but the Emperor isn't suppose to wage war or pick sides in battles unless someone is violating imperial law). The trick up the Harkonnen's sleave (because they probably would have lost otherwise) is that the Emperor gives them a few legions of his personal army, who are some of the best soldiers in the universe. This is technically illegal, but the idea is that if they catch the Atreides off guard and overwhelm them quickly enough, they can kill anyone who would rat out the Emperor for picking sides. It almost worked, but Paul is alive and is now the new Duke of House Atreides.

Thank you for this, a lot more in depth than the movie was. Watching this I thought the floating dude was the emperor haha. I really enjoy getting more backstory to movies like this to better understand the world. Going into the second movie now I'll have a better understanding and can enjoy the next one that much more

Jamis was his friend in another time line and in the visions... there not always correct. BUT Jamis did teach Paul the his final lesson... in the desert its kill or be killed
