This is honestly the best review I've seen of the iFixit stuff; it's nice to find a video of an honest review and not just another shill who got a free iFixit kit heh

theres a lot of honest reviews, but most come from PC or phone repair, its nice seeing one that goes outside that box a bit

Totally worth it. I fixed my GBA SP back in 2020 that had a cracked screen since 2004. Thing still works in sound, power, and controls, I just cant see what's happening on screen. The only reason I didn't want to fix it at the time was back in the old youtube days, there were only a few tutorials on how to remove the rubber feet on the screen frame that were covering the screws of the top shell. The person on the youtube video basically destroyed his and I did not want that to happen to mine. I built the confidence after 16 years to do it and there are more videos on how to PROPERLY do it without destroying the feet (it was doing it slowly and carefully). I just asked my self, "Do i want a broken screen forever or do i want to fix this issue with a change of it actually working."

Received one of these as a gift and it has got pretty much everything you need to fix small gadgets. The tools are good quality and perform very well so long as they are not misused or abused. Far better than the majority of cheap Chinese kits which do have bits that round off easily. I have used my kit for replacing watch batteries, iPhone battery replacement, laptop computer repairs, Fitbit battery replacement, and loads of other stuff. Easily worth the purchase price compared to trying to get stuff commercially repaired. Look after it and this kit should last for years and the lifetime replacement guarantee for any parts you do manage to break offers peace of mind. Mine came with a free magnetic mat, so the lid spill problem isn’t an issue.

@@JeremyYThe Magnetic mat is always there, its below the bit holding part of the mako Precision bit set. Its a black mat holding the bit set in the kit on its place but I use it with my computerservice company alot to hold the screws

I work as a onsite tech at two Elementary schools. I am constantly repairing Chromebooks and was looking for a good set I have known of ifixit for quite some time since another job i had used those for the repairs but I wasn't sure if i should spend the price or not. I am finally just going to take the jump. I am really hoping the bits don't strip too easy on me

Hey! Ive been looking some reviews of this toolkit lately and urs is the most complete one! You answered all of my questions. So you think this kit is worth the price? Thats the issue ive been thinking mostly. I saved some money over the time and I dont wish to buy the toolkit not worth the price. 70$ is kind of big number over here 😅
@JeremyY
@JeremyY 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out my vid! Yes I do think it's worth the price. Because buying all of the kit's component separately is not just a pain in the ass but probably not cost-effective enough to make it worth your while. And the iFixIt Lifetime Warranty is legit. The Pro Tech Toolkit has most of what you'll need for most electronics repairs and it's great that it comes in a simple, easy to carry pouch. It sits on my shelf for when I'm not using it and stays out of the way. It's not perfect but there is no better alternative, right now.

There is a similar kit that was recently released at Harbor Freight by QUINN, and also covered by their lifetime warranty. It's an 87 piece kit. Hope you can do a comparison review. It's $40 less than the iFixit Kit.

@audiocarp
@audiocarp 2 жыл бұрын
The fact that some of the bits deformed after one use would have made me flunk this tool kit. Been working on electronics for many years and I have no patience for crummy tools; but, unfortunately, everyone shops by price alone and so, that's what we're saddled with. If I have to buy the same tools over and over, how much of a bargain is that?... Early last year, Klein introduced a 39-bit set, #32717, that's quite good and only $30 in Home Depot ($35 at Mouser). No major complaints except that the case requires two hands to open; that's just plain stupid. And this is imported into the US, not made here which is a disturbing new trend for Klein tools... Thanks for the tip about Chapman's low-profile ratchet: I've been using a 1/4" box wrench with the bit taped inside... And who makes those screw extraction tools?
@JeremyY
@JeremyY 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the deformed bit wasn't great but the lifetime warranty did help. And I'm probably reaching when I say this but the softer driver bits might help to avoid stripping screws or cracking more delicate components. But that's likely a "happy accident" resulting from cheaper build quality instead of being intentional. Sucks to hear about Klein because I have one of their demolition drivers and it has served me well, but I also purchased it several years back. If Klein is headed downhill in quality I'll be very disappointed. My screw extractor set is Moody brand.

Would you still recommend this in 2023? I'm thinking of picking one up come the Black Friday deals. Also, isn't there a magnetic pad under the bit case? Couldn't you use that to place your screws on? Though I just looked and it seems the $70 bundle now comes with a magnetic pad.
@JeremyY
@JeremyY 9 ай бұрын
Yes I would still recommend this kit for 2023! The magnetic pad is a new addition so I’d like to imagine that iFixIt saw this review video and added it afterwards!
@akaoz2617

@@JeremyYWell I was thinking of buying a kit from them and now I may go elsewhere. They raised all of their prices to the point where after you take the 20-25% black Friday sale off it's the exact same price they were before. Some may now be about $4 off but others are the exact same price.

I have a big set of their bits and they round right off so easily.. I have replaced each damaged bit individually with quality bits which is really expensive. iFixIt put me off buying any tool sets. I assume they are scams and just buy good tools individually.
@JeremyY
@JeremyY 2 жыл бұрын
The driver bits are definitely the Kit’s weak point. iFixIt seems to be pretty responsive so maybe improving the bits’ durability is something we could all demand.

It'd be nice if this "Right to Repair" movement also included the ability for people who use the stuff to be able to afford to design it heh It would eliminate a lot of these design flaws if somebody in R&D had actually used the set for a week or two ...

A great example of this is Prusa 3D, they use their own 3D printers all the time and because of that they've eliminated a lot of tiny issues.

Yes I would. The anti static wrist strap is good quality (the knock off versions do not make these properly), it has the drill bits you need for just about every component, and it also has anti static versions of the prying tools.

Moody Precision Screw Extractor & Screwdriver Set (Stock# 58-0670). I don’t have a buying link but Moody is a US-based company that manufactures a range of specialized hand tools. If you live in Canada or the US you should be able to buy it easily. I tried contacting them for an international link but received no response.

No one who has not been payed by iFixIt could recommend this, when for less than half the price you can get better Chinese kits (like the XOOL kit).
@JeremyY
@JeremyY 2 жыл бұрын
Nope not paid by iFixIt. Wish I was though- my car could use some more gas. When I originally bought this kit the iFixIt was the only complete electronics repair kit on the market. Looks like that has changed over the years. Never heard of the XOOL kit- how does it only cost $25 USD?? It's a clear knock off of the iFixIt Protech Toolkit.
@matatoto9805

@JeremyY
@JeremyY 2 жыл бұрын
@@matatoto9805 because it is a knockoff haha. XOOL even ripped off the iFixIt blue and black colour scheme and priced to undercut. I come from the land of cheap knock offs and spent my days growing up in flea markets believe me son I know my knockoffs and that is a straight knock off. That "XOOL" kit looks like it gets sold on a Chinatown sidewalk next to "Bolex" watches.

Hard disagree. Ask yourself: how much will I have to pay to replace a catalytic converter plus the hacked apart O2 sensor that the methhead thief didn’t give a damn while going hog wild with a sawzall. Now ask yourself: how much for the MillerCAT?
@anchoragedj
@anchoragedj 10 ай бұрын
Too expensive? Are you kidding me? Buying the pieces (of equivalent quality) would be several times the price of this kit. I have used this kit for almost a decade and I have bent one bit, immediately replaced by ifixit no questions asked. And I was working on a project that was made for Craftsman or Snap-On bits. Instead I grabbed my ifixit set - and bent a bit. Precision is made for precision work. As far as extraction, I have a tap/die set that is just fine. I understand why they didn’t provide an extractor set. It wouldn be more than a hundred bucks easily. It’s rare that I find a stripped screw in a project unless it’s been ‘fixed’ (stripped) during a project before the one I’m doing. Too expensive, ya made me snort lol. It’s a bargain!

I cannot recommend this based on the reviews I watched. Yes I never owned this or used this. There are brands that is better for your use case. It could be more expensive than this or cheaper but you are better buying other brands and the tools that is not included in this pro kit. You better research the tools for your needs, buy it separately and invest in it.
