I was making great progress on my picking but eventually ended up with cts (not sure if brought on by guitar practise as I had a repetitive job as well). I had carpal tunnel surgery this afternoon and I'm sat with a completely numb hand in a sling just hoping I'll still be able to play at a mediocre level after it's healed. Keep striving to improve but also appreciate what technique you do have, no matter how limited.

@Greg Brown this is good advice, however in my case I found little relief from anything sadly. I do wonder if I went too hard with extensor exercises and stretches when I first developed symptoms instead of just resting as I found my symptoms worsened. I also think I may just be susceptible to it as my mum and aunt both have it as well. I hope you're able to stop your symptoms from progressing.

@Greg Brown " trying to play above my skill level and shred beyond my abilities". yeah I can relate to this. It's difficult as you have to push yourself to some extent in order to get a "feel" for higher tempo playing but you need to recognise when its too much too soon. I never had any real warning before flare ups, for instance one day I had to lift some heavy boxes repetitively at work and felt fine doing so (regular fatigue), but later that night had severe burning and numbness. It's not always easy to spot when you're doing damage.

You might change your channel’s name to ‘It’s OK To Be A Smart Guitarist.’ Holy Hendrix! I’ve been working on playing faster, particularly alternate picking, been using larger / normal size picks until now. First of all, the smaller pick makes it impossible to incorrectly hold it with three fingers instead of two, and there’s more picking surface sticking out from my fingers as a result. But I bought three different brands of smaller picks yesterday to try out, all three are basically Jazz III shape at the tip, but there’s something about the Jazz III that is just overall better for lead lines. I wouldn’t recommend it for strumming, but for picking individual strings and playing fast it’s ideal. I also noticed the angle you hold your pick at. Until now I’ve played with the pick parallel to the strings, so I was getting maximum surface area of the pick on each stroke, but you and all the other examples you showed had them playing along the pick’s edge, which now that I think about it makes more sense. I’m originally a sax player pretty much since birth, Berklee alumni, born again musician on guitar 🎸 two years and three months ago. This kind of detailed technique and technology review is extremely helpful to someone who has ‘musicianship’ already, and I think beginners in music would benefit from getting it right from the start as well.

I just love these guitar picks....well I really love big stubbies but they wear out too fast...but jazz III are eternal, there is only one thing, pick slides.......they dont squeal enough for me when doing pick slides..........does anyone else have this problem and has anyone fixed it somehow?.

Honestly watching Troy's videos has positively influenced my picking and finger picking technique as well. Because I have tried ( unsuccessfully) to adapt my finger technique to be as fast as, when I use a pick.

I do like them. I prefer Jazz III XL sizing. Dunlop do some that I use, enjoy the way they feel in the hand texture wise. I usually play metal with thick strings and Jazz III were just too short as I like to have a firm grip to really dig in, and with standard Jazz III its just a little too short. And with standard size picks they tend to be too long and cause me to have less control. Jazz III XL, spot on! So i guess i do agree the Jazz III is the ultimate pick, but if you're like me and need that little extra, try an XL ;)

The shape, yes, the material, no. Nylon=bad, Tortex=good (from an audio engineers point of view).

@Aeronaut19755 жыл бұрын
@@austrich8309 Carbon conducts electricity, which over time would get into your pickups and switches. Tortex doesn't conduct, so the dust is not an issue.

It's a very good pick for leads indeed but I personally don't like it for rhythm stuff, at least metal rhythm. It lacks the punch and sharp attack that for example the Tortex (Regular/TIII/Sharp) or Ultex Sharp picks have. The Tortex Jazz III are better in that regard but due to the smaller surface they still don't sound the same imho. If I would only play lead stuff I would probably go for a regular Jazz III, but if there has to be a compromise with rhythm stuff as well it would be a Ultex Sharp or a Tortex TIII (or the new Tortex Flow). Btw is there an actual difference between the red and the black Jazz III? Anyways, great video as always! Cracking the code really helped me the most with my playing since I discovered it, thanks!
@MrJam10015 жыл бұрын
I couldn't have said it better myself the jazz picks aren't very good for rhythm I find the TIII to be the best overall pick.

I like the Stubby Jazz III 2mm it has a beveled edge. I had the same problems with the regular, I like the tone better than the tortex or nylon. They also make one called Stiffo or something that has a nice grip but are hard to find. I have never seen an Ultex one. I would like to try one of those.
@Kornholic5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's good for fast rhythm parts but it just doesn't sound as good as other picks.
@jiyu_the_monk.19835 жыл бұрын
They do differ, the red is less stiff iirc, I have been wanting to get one as I feel the black is near perfect but a bit too stiff. I do like it for metal riffs/rhythm, but it's weird for funkier or more acoustic-like stuff.

After sucking at guitar for 20 years using Dunlop tortex.88mm (green), I picked up a pack of jazz 3’s and strummed one chord and suddenly the mosh pit tripled in radius size, and every single girl in the audience threw their bras at me on stage. Unfortunately I was performing for my family in our tv room so the only girls were my mom and grandma, and the only mosh pit was my dad and my uncle.

This size pic is good for single note speed. It forces you to keep the pick close to the strings after plucking them. But it's terrible for rhythm. I finally settled on a mid size pick, like the XL jazz pick series or Dunlop black ice, 1.10 thickness. Good balance for rhythm and lead.

omg I LOVE the Jazz III, they're an affordable brand of small jazz picks, and you have the convenience of being able to buy them at guitar center. I use jazz picks for rythm too, not just lead. They work perfectly for both, but definitely especially lead. My lead playing improved a lot when I switched to them.
@WiqidBritt5 жыл бұрын
I'm not even really a shred-y lead player, but I remember trying one out years ago and it made every other more standard pick I had feel needlessly large and clumsy. There was also the bonus that the Jazz III doesn't wear down like the green Gator Grips that had been my preference before. I've never had to replace one for breaking or losing its edge or tip. They're kind of amazing.
@troygrady5 жыл бұрын
Gator Grip is a great material in many respects but it does round over very quickly. A Gator-like material that doesn't abrade would be a great pick.
@ATX07052 жыл бұрын
Is it just me, or are the red Dunlop Jazz 3s garbage now? They wear like crap in my opinion. I think I remember Martin Miller making a post on Facebook saying he will no longer use them because they are poorly cut now, even though they use to be his favorite picks.
@ATX07052 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's the excess material on the sides which make them feel and wear like crap. I knew it wasn't just me.
