Dunlop has the Jazz III- XL Shape in various materials and thickness. My favourite is the Ultex Heavy with 1.2 or 1.5 mm.

Size, shape, thickness, material - all of that comes into play resulting in different sound and feel depending on the technique you're after. Your totally right. I go by max grip jazz IIIs (red nylon) and ultex flows (.73 & .88). Nylon standard .73 & .88 feels great for strumming mostly. I recommend to try different options to find what works best for yourselves, guys. But one thing for sure - the thicker (and rounder) the pick - the mellower the sound and vice versa - the sharpier (and thinner) the tip the brighter. Best of luck, guys!

I use this exact combo. The Red Jazz III and the Ultex Flow .88 The Red Jazz III is great for aggressive metal and chugging complex riffs, and it does well for most shred/lead. But man, the Flow is incredible at lead, especially economy/sweep picking. Its a joy to play, and great for strumming. I guess my dream pick is a Jazz III shape, .88-1.00mm, Ultex material. If this exists, Im all ears. 🤯

I make my own, inelastic, hard wood picks (usually glued from 3 veneer layers (1 mm - 1.5 mm thick) and since I do, I do not use any others. Similar to bone in my opinion, but also depending on the used woods. Work perfectly well for me, some users also liked them, others said, they were unusable. So picks are a very personal thing obviously...

Or just get some Dunlop Flow picks. ;) OK, maybe not for maximum bite metal riffing, but it's the only pick I've found that seems to do *everything* else perfectly. I used to go for Jazz III:s but the horror of trying to get a really relaxed strumming sound with those...

For sharp picks: I love the "Dans guitar store precision picks". Strange name but i am sold. The sharpest nicest picks, with good grip in different sizes. I am not sponsored - i just really like them. (They also teached me that my picking sucks lol)

I never could get comfy with rather trendy Jazz III's (perhaps trendy is the wrong word but nevertheless...). I developed an affinity a long time ago for Pick Boy carbon/nylon 0.70's with the nubbys on them for gripping. But I file a little of the pointiness off of them; I don't like overly pointy picks based on my personal playing preferences. But Viva la Variety.

My issue with Jazz III picks is that I don't like the grip surface and they feel too small to hold. I do like the shape of the tip. I've been trying the Jazz III XL and the Flow series, and I like them both much better. Although they might be a bit too similar. Also, I find myself going back to the good old traditional Tortex with the traditional shape.

well i dont use a pick, probably ever few weeks i force myself to use one durring practice just to shake things up, but i still prefer finger style at the end of the day. im interested in those comically large plectrums that are the size of an ear pods case.

I used to play Jazz III Max Grip too but I recently switched to Dunlop Flow when I found out that they're passing through a string much more easily and standard size is a million times more comfortable for strumming

I used the JP Jazz III for the longest time and I still think they're some of the best for fast playing. Currently using two picks by Winspear picks (Amber Shiv and Shiv Mini). The thicker round side (where you grab the pick), makes playing incredibly relaxed or rather it makes playing relaxed easier. I can only recommend thicker picks (3 or 4 or 5 mm). Doesn't have to be Winspear, I just like them. Just get some thicc bois, is what I'm saying.

Good joice. I play the John Petrucci Ultex Jazz III pick. Same thickness and shape like all Jazz picks, but while the Jazz III is a bit to small for my hand, the XL is a bit too big. So I have to pay for the name extra, allthough am not the biggest Petrucci fan ever since. :D

@@TheRaubeinexactly the same with me... it's just the perfect size and everything, only downside (and this is a nitpick) is imo it could have slightly more/better traction, maybe make the logo fatter so it's more even? Not sure how exactly

The Jazz III pickups are good but have one big disadvantage. They are too small for pick slanting. So you better choose a more versatile pick. I, after trying almost every pick, recommend the Ibanez sand grip picks. These can do everything in perfection.
@saschamarr4952 ай бұрын
The pick size has nothing to do with being able to pick slant or not. You likely just aren't doing it correctly ..

@saschamarr4952 ай бұрын
@@iloveitall How long have you been playing? I think you should probably get deeper into the mechanics of picking and pick slanting. Troy Grady has made great videos on that..however, it becomes quite irrelevant at some point. You tend to not really think about it at all once you reach a certain level. Kevin Heiderich is rather outspoken on the topic and I tend to agree with him. HE has small hands, but is likely the tightest player on youtube. I am 6 foot 2 and have massive hands :D
@iloveitall2 ай бұрын
@@saschamarr495 You definitely have stop thinking that because someone got a different opinion he can't be good. I'm 56, playing sice I was 13, had nearly all guitars, tested nearly all picks and strings, can play every stuff from Gilmore to Petrucci and I still say that pick slanting is much easier with a normal pick than it is with a Jazz III. Reason is easy. you slant it eg upwards the thumb has to be out of the way so you pull it back. On a Jazz III there is hardly any space to pull a finger to the upper edge and when you do you loose control over the pick. That's it for me.
@saschamarr4952 ай бұрын
@@iloveitall Who said you are not good? That's you projecting! I simply said get deeper into the mechanics. You are moving your thumb which is not economical. I don't need to move my thumb out the way when slanting up. It stays locked in and all my movement comes from the wrist. Thumb movement of any sort is not economical unless you are crosspicking like Steve Morse.
