Is “The Kingdom of Heaven” Different than “The Kingdom of God”?

Why does the Gospel of Matthew use the phrase “Kingdom of Heaven” when all of the other Gospels say “Kingdom of God”? Is there a difference between these two designations or are they just two different phrases used to describe the same thing?

The kingdom of heaven is Jesus' 1000 year reign on earth. The kingdom of God is the spiritual kingdom that we enter when we get saved through believing (trusting) the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

True!! The Jews were expecting their Messiah to kick out the Romans and restore Israel to the glory that she enjoyed under kings David and Solomon. That will happen but not until Jesus returns to rule from Jerusalem for a thousand years. See Acts 1:6&7.

The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven are obviously different. For starters, they’re spelled differently. One would think that the English language would be enough to clear up the confusion on this topic, but unfortunately it doesn’t. God is a spirit (Jhn 4:24) therefore, the Kingdom of God is spiritual. Heaven is physical and something God created (Gen 1:1, 2:1). Birds don’t fly in God, they fly in the heaven. The Kingdom of God was lost when Adam fell in the garden and no longer offered to man until Jesus Christ returned, but both Kingdoms offered by Christ to Israel was rejected and the Kingdom of Heaven was put off until Christ’s second advent, when Isaiah 9, about the kingdom of heaven will be fulfilled on earth. Until then, the Kingdom of God is only being offered to man and to enter the Kingdom of God, “ye must be born again” (Jhn 3:7) because man’s first birth isn’t good enough, as all have fallen short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23). When the Kingdom of God was lost by Adam, men in the OT have been fighting over the Kingdom of Heaven and who would rule the world.

But the kingdom of heaven is taken by force, is a statement meant to show the zeal, the thirst and the urgency of those who seek to enter Gods kingdom. “From the days of John the Baptist until now”…..from John the Baptist? Why? What did John preach?? REPENT! FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND! John came with a holy and righteous zeal. So much that folks thought he was Elias. Different than any other messenger at that time. He was born with the Holy Ghost, unlike any other. From the days of John the Baptist until now, says Jesus. You tried, but The WORD was not examined properly. You took only a few passages where the two kingdoms appear to be the same. Have you tried looking at every single use of the “Kingdom of Heaven” in Matthew and compared it to similar passages in the other Gospels? They are not the Same! Study Matthew yourself. Micheal Pearl @the door explains it quite well and shows a ton more scripture to back it up.

It is seriously deep, and seriously complex. The Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God are not the same thing. Check out Michael Pearl’s book ,8 kingdoms. He can be found on KZbin , the title of his page is “The Door”. You will look at , and understand the Bible a bit differently if you understand the difference between these two kingdoms. I believe it’s crucial to “ rightly dividing” the word.

There is no such thing as one professing to be a Christian. One is either a Christian because they “have believed” on Jesus Christ or they are not a Christian because they “have not believed” on Jesus Christ. God sees the heart, not man. Man can only believe what man tells him, whereas God knows all things and awaits the time when man dies and faces judgement. Only the Lord knows who is and who isn’t a Christian.

It gave me joy to see this discussion being had! I didn't do a study on the subject, but held the idea that the kingdom of God is His rulership in our hearts(rightousness), and that the kingdom of heaven was the manifestation of His kingdom in our reality or atmostphere. Schofields view seems better understandable for me; specially considering in relation to Daniels prophecy of the God of Heaven. The first call to repentance is naturally to the broad field of the kingdom of heaven where all humans are called with equal opportunity with Jews first. The kingdom of God is the treasure to be searched out and be found in this field, which is through the word of God .(Matt chap13) As for the kingdom of God, we have to seek and find it, for it is in the midest of us since the kingdom of heaven is already at hand. The fruit of the kingdom of God is known to be righcieosness , peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit which shine its light to the world This is why it is called a mystry revealed only to the relatively few who dicerned what they heard and saw thus avoiding the deception of the evil one. The use of the two terms interchangeably in the Gospels is due to this transient nature of the two kingdoms within the same system and should not surprise us. In my view, the spirit of the whole council of God which is very consistent through out the Bible is what should guide our understanding.

To understand why only Matthew uses the phrase, " The Kingdom of Heaven " whereas the other Gospels don’t. We first must answer the question of why would God mark 144,000 of the tribes of Israel in Revelation 7. I know it doesn’t seem relevant but it is. The Apostle Paul asked the question, Has God forsaken Israel "? He wasn’t just referring to the Jews, for he would say all Israel will be saved. So, it is obvious that all 12 tribes will be present at the time of the Great Tribulation. Why is this necessary? What most Christians and scholars don’t understand is the parentheses between God dealing with Israel in the Old Testament and the seven last years of the book of Revelation. That parentheses is, the building up of the Body of Christ called the Church, and the call to whosoever may come ( the gentles ). It is agreed, that most Scholars believe Matthew wrote his Gospel to a Jewish audience so, they would be familiar with his phrase, " The Kingdom of Heaven." To them, it meant the Nation of Israel that God along set up to be His Oracle People. God didn't choose them because they deserved it or were big or better. God made a promise to Abraham that his descendants would be His people and would teach the heathens about the one true God, but they joined with the Nations around them. Again this was a kingdom chosen by God. The contract was a oneway promise made in heaven, unconditional by God with no strings attached. Even if those kids were to go astray He would keep his promise to Abraham. Once God said it, it's forever settled in heaven. After the parenthesis (the Church) is complete God will again pick up where he left off and deal with the regathering of Israel. This is why the Great Tribulation is called Jacob's trouble. To further show this is the correct meaning of the kingdom of heaven only Matthew users; go to the statement by Jesus himself in Acts 1. There Jesus is about to go back to His Father. He tells his Disciples about the Kingdom of God but they aren't getting it. The thing on their minds was the restoration of Israel. They asked, "Will you restore at this time again the kingdom of Israel? " (They had no idea Jesus was about to leave them.) They assume He was going to throw off the oppression and rule as king over the world and they would be there to assist. Jesus stopped them in their tracks and said, it's not for you to know, only me Father knows but ( in the meantime) teach all nations... Jesus didn't deny Israel would be restored but it would be sometime in the future. We are in the times of Pentecost, gathering the first fruits of the resurrection. Building the Church for the Son of his love [Jesus Christ.] This harvest could be almost complete then God will restore all of Israel. The Apostle Paul said the calling of God was without recall. God doesn't change: once He speaks a thing is. He spoke and not a thing became everything. If it didn't happen then "He's not God Almighty." ( Dr. Gene Scott.) And we here on earth, live in a fantasy world and believe something when it is not real. For God to be God he has to keep his promises. God carries the bigger stick that makes God Almighty. Israelites will do what God had called them for and they will wake-up to the calling at the time of Jacob's trouble. The Kingdom of Elohim (plural of Eloah) comprises of two kingdoms: Kingdom 1. Christ YHWH Tsidqenuw's Kingdom here on this present earth (Jer 23:5,6, Zech 14:9) We also see God The Father taking ownership here also of this Kingdom even though it's Christ's, but it's because He gave it to Him and it is Christ submitting to God Most High. (Psalms 2:6-9, Psalms 18:43-50, Psalms 110, Luke 19:11,12, Luke 22:29, Revelation 11:15). Christ's reign will be 1000 years here on this earth (Revelation 20:4-6), afterwards satan will be loosed, destroyed and then there's Judgement Day (Revelation 20:7-15). Kingdom 2. YHWH God Almighty/The Father's Kingdom will be on the New Earth, for there will be a New Heaven and Earth that Christ will create (Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22). Christ would have delivered up His Kingdom unto God The Father and He shall reign over all in the end (1 Corinthians 15:22-28, Revelation 21 and 22).

The kingdom of heaven is here on earth it's just hidden. To see it you need to understand what Jesus is saying in his parables because he said, "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world." He said, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field; the field is the world. You need to look at the world in a whole different light or should I say, a different way. Spot on. It could not be easier or clearer. Just to add: The hyper grace movement has latched on to the Scofield and Vines beliefs here. This movement "hypers" most things in the Bible - hyper grace, hyper dispensation-ism, hyper rightly divide the word of God, etc. And the reason for this is, so that the hard, demanding, carry your cross parts of Bible can be 'done away' with - normally by attributing the hard parts to the poor Jews and the easy parts to believers - hence the phrase 'easy believism". It thus suits them to differentiate between the Kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God - when Scripture clearly shows they are synonyms. In particular they do this with Jesus' words e.g. they say the Sermon on the mount is not applicable to believers - they say rightly dividing the word makes these words equivalent to law, which in turn amounts to works and therefore cannot be the gospel of grace. In other words, they say that the Sermon on the Mount (and in fact most of Jesus' words convey the principles for the Kingdom of heaven - the Jews earthly kingdom, whereas true believers belong to the kingdom of God and need not, in fact, must not adhere to these teachings - if you do then you are trying to work for your salvation, according to them.

Kingdom of Heaven is a destination after death and to get there, you have to hear the gospel and apply faith in your hearing. The hearing the message mixed with faith becomes entry into the kingdom of God which is a relationship within the spirit of man and the spirit of God. The kingdom of God is in the hearing and in order to go to the Kingdom of Heaven you must be in the kingdom of God. Kingdom of God is based on faith and lived by faith and Jesus taught what this kingdom within is like. As we grow we gain more spiritual power to do the same works of Jesus via the Holy Spirit.

I used believe much of what you are saying when I left my family inherited Christianity, until Jesus Christ actually saved me and I hope you will hear from Him too because he loves you. He died and rose again for our sins, witnessed by many. "Christian" and thus "Christianity" is not part of what true believers follow nor what the early church followed, but we are told that if we are following the true word of God and consequently suffer by being labelled by others as "Christians" for it then so be it. The word Christian is what believers in the early church were referred to by unbelievers in Antioch. Eventually the man made doctrine of the trinity was introduced into Christianity at the council of Nicaea that God was " one being 3 persons", which is a false doctrine based off paganism. The early church did not have or practice this - it came way after the first Church and it's the reason "Christians" today are lost. So that's where it is true about paganism. The trinity is basically a worldly and thus false explanation of the "Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" and it is a very incorrect explanation because there is only one God. To understand Jesus Christ is to get away from the churches that the Catholics have birthed through the teaching of the trinity doctrine because it limits you from knowing eternal life which is defined as knowing God and Jesus Christ. It is the will of God for all human beings to know him as God (God is his title) but to also know His name (his name is Jesus Christ) because Jesus is a wonderful Father not just God! God is a title, the creator of all things but notice that titles are different than a name. God is spirit, one spirit. The other names of other Gods don't save. This is why we spread the gospel so people know the name of God and what He did for us, so they don't call on Gods that can't hear them and don't answer to them. So they know Jesus does not condemn them. This is why Christianity, in terms of the man made religion based on the trinity is based on paganism yes, but Jesus Christ is real. The father through his Son, taught us to love God and love one another and to watch out for the falsehood that would be taught by Satan through his false prophets which is why Jesus always had a problem with the pharisees and their hypocrisy. Jesus is merciful and kind and he doesn't break his promises or scare us into submission. The only thing I would like to say is, you are right and on point on them being the same thing. My only complaint is you said Matthew was written to "Jews". I encourage you to look at the Greek word used for Jew. You will find that the word Jew is a mistranslation. It often replaces 1 of three words. Judean= someone who resides in the land of Judea, Judah= the tribe of Judah, and Judahite= a person who is of the tribe of Judah. What I'd correct in your video is that you said Matthew was written to "Jews", in place of who it was really written to, which was Judahites. Judea was a multicultural state in the Roman empire and the state did not consist of 100% Israelites as the southern portion of Judea was formerly Idumea, the Edomites territory. It would be innacurate to call every Jew(which is short for resident of Judea) an Israelite, or any Israelite a Jew. The words are simply not interchangeable. I thank you for this brief on the two phrases. Two quick comments,,, Messiah said the we pray we should pray that the kingdom come and will be done ... come from where and/or how? ON EARTH as it is in heaven. Thus maybe some other aspects... Point two, I have thought there is a difference between "entering" and "inheriting" the kingdom. Blessed those of the first resurrection resurrection ... the second death has no power... this implies there may be some who are given life after the grave but still could go to the second death. I know this sounds crazy but there are many other factors... so maybe look into the aspects of interim vs. enter ... who are the people of the saints of the most high ... all this is a joy to consider. first time viewer and subscribed... a commenter mentions sabbath so maybe you are of this living way ilk.

In the Beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. God wasn't in Heaven. He has his own Kingdom. Heaven was created as a space for us. I see Kingdom of God as an unapproachable light, whereas Kingdom of Heaven we can meet him there. After all, I see God desired to dwell with us in Heaven, but wanted us to prepare Earth as it was in Heaven. It was our task, our job, but we screwed that up. The work and purpose of God is different for the Nation of Israel than for the Church. The Jews expect the Messiah to come down as their King to rule from the present Jerusalem on earth. This is the 7th day of rest, the 1000y Millennium rule of Christ with the redeemed nation of Israel after the last 3.5y of the Great Tribulation. This is the kingdom of heaven ruling on this present earth. It is primarily for Israel but not exclusively. The Church have a heavely destination primarily but not exclusively. Thats why the "Kingdom of God" is preferred. Notwithstanding, the two "kingdoms" mentioned, they overlap, and are the same in spiritual essence. I don't think that there is anyone available to reveal all the DETAILS and differences, and similarities between the two kingdoms. Matthew is the book primarily written to a Jewish Audience. And yes there will be un-regenerated peoples(sheep nations) living in the kingdom of heaven during the Millennium, which will result in some of those individuals eventually inherit the kingdom of God, which is eternal life

Might just some of the reasons that Kingdom of Heaven is also used. In Matthew 8:11 Jesus mentions the kingdom of heaven. In the very next verse he says, 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. That sounds like hell to me. In John 3:3 Jesus tells nicodemus that You cannot see the kingdom of God unless you are born again. In 3:5 you cannot enter the kingdom of God without both births. How do you reconcile these 2 passages? Do you believe that born again people will be cast into outer darkness….?

Man you were so close to getting it spot on at the end of the vid when mentioning Matthew's jewish audience. but you didn't go far enough. ok, well Matthew wrote his gospel in Hebrew, not Greek. now the Greek word for heaven is "Ouranus", and well Ouranus is a primordial Greek God, the god of the sky/heavens. There is no Ouranus in hebrew, and especially no greek sky god. Matthew wrote the "reign of Elohim",, but what likely happened later on is that hellenized greek translators took the hebrew Matthew and translated it to greek and THEY are the ones that changed it to and emphasized 'heaven' and "ouranus". This was likely not Matthew nor the Messiah speaking about the kingdom of heaven, it was likely consistent with the rest of scripture and spoke of the "kingdom of God". the change happened due to translation error of matthew from hebrew to greek done by pagan minded translators

This is so incorrect. The Book of Matthew was written for Messianic Jewish believers, while Mark and Luke wrote for Gentile believers. Matthew preserves the Jewishness of the scripture, while Mark and Luke had to write so the Gentiles could understand. The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven are both the same.
