I have a 2015 VRS estate in red with the black pack and 19-inch wheels. It came fully loaded from the dealer, as they bought it to be a demonstrator so it has a panoramic roof, keyless entry, self-parking, active cruise control, reversing camera, uprated stereo, etc, etc. It’s the petrol DSG model and around town averages 35mpg. On a run if I keep below 85mph I average 42mpg. Keep to 65 mph and its high 40’s. In 8 years the only thing that has been replace is the washer pump. The most practical all-round car I have ever owned, fast enough to get into trouble with the plod, it will cruise happily at 130 mph on the Autobahn, what more could anyone want!

Having watched the videos on both the Octavia VRS and the Superb we went to test drive them both yesterday. They were both very impressive cars. We decided on the Octavia and got a great deal on an immaculate 200ps Diesel from Skoda with 22% off the list for a car with just 3,000 miles on the clock. We are big Audi fans but, having test driven the A4 Avant as well, there was no sense that we were downgrading at all. A big thank you for the excellent video and review, we are pleased to be new Octavia VRS owners.

After several Ford models (3 Mondeo's & 4 Fiestas Inc their ST3) I'd become bored with their range and disillusioned by their ecoboom problems. I read many positive reviews of the Octavia and dipped my toe in the water with a 1.5 TSi and have had a very pleasant surprise with how quiet, comfortable & economical the model is. Now I'm reading great reviews such as yours about the VRS and am thinking it's time for an upgrade. Many thanks for your enthusiastic recommendations for the car which are very much supported by the comments from other owners as seen below.

The Octavia VRS has always been a good looking (and good performing car) and, as you say, at that price it’s worth every penny. Compared with the EV Astra you drove at well over £40k it’s a no brainer. That must be the most glowing review on any car you've tested. I have got a 245 previous model top spec with a vaq differential, it makes a big improvement in how it handles and puts our power down. I've driven and owned many different cars but my 245 has to be the best overall package ,its nor 100% in any category but its 90% all.i know you keep mentioning its only got 245 but, but it has 280lb/ft from 1500rpm right up to 5,500rpm . Which is very good , but my skoda only weighs 1450kg so its power to weight is better than more powerful rivals. But its crowm jewel is its balance ,and torque what makes it faster than 245 suggests . They hold their value really well too.

I had one on hire a couple of months ago, although it wasn't a VRS but a 1.5 petrol. I found it amazing. And from Northumberland down to Devon it was a dream. Half a tank for 450 miles cant be bad. My only gripe was my left leg was banged up against the transmission tunnel, an after 7 hours of driving it became quite sore. Id get something soft put around there if it were mine. Apart from that amazing.

As a mk3 owner (albeit running 300+ bhp and with DSG) I wholeheartedly endorse the VRS, its impressed me hugely, I liken them to SAAB, the article TG did about SAAB when they said they had a specific type of owner was bang on, I feel Skoda are going the same way, the new Superb is awesome, I'd buy it over any other German brand, it just makes so much sense. A thing to note if you are choosing VRS is that if you want to drive quickly I'd recommend good tyres, sounds like common sense but you simply can't get the power down with ditch finders fitted

On my third vRS estate (current is previous design from new, first petrol one, with DCC and digital dash). Recognise what makes it cheaper and none of it comes close to being an irritant or makes it feel wanting, 245bhp more than enough. Love it every time I use it. Of note I use an Individual drive mode that is Sport without the silly , pointless electronic growling noise that vibrates the vent slats. I have also had connectivitiy issues with Android Auto on quite a few VAG cars in recent times, found that unplugging then leaving it a few minutes, trying again, a few times, eventually it works and my latest Google phone working better than previous phones for now. Praying Skoda don't muck it up too much going forward - looking at this model - electronic handbrake, those calipers, the infotainment system, plus the hint that automatic only, the push for electric/hybrid - all worrying for the future, am keeping mine for at least 2-3 years more.

Had my 245 vRS DSG for 7 weeks now. Came from a 2019 Golf R estate which I loved had a lot of second thoughts about getting rid of. I wanted to stay in the VAG group and wanted something that still had a bit of performance (obviously it isn't as quick as the R.) The Mk8 R was quite honestly out of my price range and even if I had been, I'm not that fussed on the design and after experiencing the Golf infotainment system in my partner's car, would have been put off getting one. I can honestly say I'm not regretting it. The car and it's features as standard are everything the Golf should have been. Options such as the electronic boot, ambient lighting etc. Not forgetting the simple Skoda touches (umbrella in door, ice scraper in fuel flap.) The car has a good amount of space,.more so than the Golf but not so much that I feel like I'm driving anything bigger. There is plenty of performance and the car looks great. Had numerous comments about it. So far I have minimal complaints, door handles are cheap, scratch plastic and the stock sound system could be better but as a fast(ish) family estate loaded with kit at a good price , it's pretty much impossible to beat. I had mine at 1yr old with the winter pack added, it came in at under 40k new which is a consideration for the higher tax band. There are some comments about the infotainment system, so far, so good . I find there to be a good balance between physical buttons and on screen and in my opinion, it's easier to use than my partners golf. The voice command function works well. The Skoda App works well and is generally fairly priced for what I want. If you are in any doubt about getting this car, don't be, you will struggle to be disappointed

No issues with driving position but I'm a very average 5ft 10. I am going to remap mine soon, which will take the power to around 350bhp. The chassis can manage this power, plus these come with a limited slip differential as standard. Would have been good if you'd mentioned that. Unusual & should not be happening on a car of that age. Corrected under warranty. Paint was a bit soft too as just before I sold it the front wings were chipped with tiny pin marks. Also didn't like short runs as sludge on oil filler cap but only in cold weather. Otherwise great car. Massive boot. Fast (197 bhp) Golf GTI engine. Cracking review just sold my gti edition 45 too many worries in the future of how the Mark 8 will behave with its various issues. Looking at getting a VRS 245 estate as more of a fun practical car and you’ve won me over. I’ve got a Skoda scout and that has been fab for the past 5 years and this car will be the perfect combination for a dual replacement.

Still love the vRS. A great combination of comfort, practicality, speed and good looks. There's nothing else in the market like it. My MK1 didn't have the coal mine dismally dark interior with now obligatory black or anthracite headlining that manufactures force us to have on anything remotely sporting.
@tomgreen384911 ай бұрын
Yes i have a mk 2 with the earlier trimmed seats with green and red vrs logo, they lift the cabin a bit more rather than the black option you get in later models. 👍

Black headlining and heated seats are a must on my list. The windscreen is the light bit.

I think a viable alternative is a used VW Golf estate 7.5. I have had 4 Skodas all manual Diesels but went for a Golf R estate and really like it. Gentle right foot on a motorway ( so many have speed cameras now) I can get 40MPG. 30 urban but in town it’s hopeless, can watch the fuel gauge drop as you look at it. Boot is 610 L but there is a raised boot floor that be can be removed to give more space and there is still space for a space saver tyre(keep the raised floor and a full sized tyre can be stored) As much as i like manual I appreciate the ease of use of DSG for most situations. I personally like the black roof lining and I don’t have good experiences with sunroofs, I would never have one again.

Another great video for those of us that live in the real affordable world. Could you get your hands on the Skoda Superb TSI 280 4X4 L&K DSG ? Not as dynamic, but with the added 4X4 and similar power. Thanks
@dutoitm111 ай бұрын
I had one for a while. Was only ok. The engine felt surprisingly weak for the claimed output. Especially compared to the same unit in a Golf R. Fuel economy was really bad bearing in mind the power output/type of car. On a long run would max about 36mpg with avg around 28mpg including town driving. The body control was not good enough and just a bit wallowy when pushing on. Chassis + susp. setup were not a good pairing for the engine. That being said, the Superb itself is a fantastic estate car. And all the L&K goodies were great. But I would suggest going for a lower powered petrol or the 2.0l diesel which would be a better match.

Had a 2016 VRS 230 limited edition from new. It cost me 26k! LSD, leather, heated seats, nav, it was on point. Sold it 2 years later @ 16500 for a G31 530d. Don’t regret it but what a tonne of car for the money

I had the original MK1 vRS in 2002. That car was a bargain, £15,200 on the road, 180 bhp and £400 spent at Jabba Sport took this to 240 bhp, in that time this was quite a powerful car and would worry Boxsters amongst other (considered) lesser cars. Had it 3 years and covered just over 100,000 miles. The only issue was a coli pack that let go. The true story here is just how much other VAG group cars are ripping buyers off given the huge amount of parts sharing.

i had mk1 done by jabba sport and wow it was a quick car a gave a bmw m3 a good run for its money , i traded it at a jaguar main agent and they called me the next day after they got it and could not believe how quick it was .... also had the mk2 vrs done by jabba sport . and also mk3 which was a diesel .... ended up with superb 272 sportline plus and that feels as quick as a tuned vrs and you can get the power down from the lights in the wet as 4wd , the mk1 jaba would spin in 3rd gear .......... thats only problem with vrs its a longish car and when at the light the front come up and you get the horrid knocking noise from the traction control , if only the vrs was 4wd with the 300 bhp engine i would buy in a heart beat ..........

I bought one two months ago and have to agree with most points in this review. Top end the petrol has the legs on its diesel sibling however it comes at a cost (mpg!). The top end fizz on the petrol version though is epic, open it up and it will keep pulling and pulling. Only thing I would say is the build quality is a bit iffy in some places...Great family car though, currently filled with half a tree to take to the tip 😂

Just brought one of the last of the Mark 4s, i understand there is a slight uplift with design little tweaks here and there, and now been told, they, Skoda are not fitting sunroofs? And as you said only autos now, Would be good to have a rear view camera i have sorted that out, no problem., The front lights have been upgraded on the new design but hay ho that's how it goes , I would imagine a lot more money as well, also on a sad note, Skoda are finishing with the Octavia 2024 so wait until the end for upgrade or just buy news out there now at the lower price, great car for the money and mainly built by VW spec. Have fun and enjoy.

It's a great looking car and classy in that colour, in my opinion. I can see the appeal, particularly one that's two or three years old and depreciated a little. For VW Group not to have sorted their software out after all this time is disgraceful though and makes you wonder what else it won't be able to fix if there's a problem. Great review Ped 👍

I bought a 2012/13 RS tdi 170 hp in 2023, and saved big ( paid 3000 pounds) I am very happy with it. I waited until a well maintained one popped up, It had 350,000km (freeway mileage) but I dont care. Its a Skoda and its a diesel, manual, and a bargain for the kicks I get from driving it. I'm still ahead even with less bells and whistles than the 2024 model. "Reverse snobbery" lol. My Dad used to say "you lose thousands as soon as you drive out of the showroom". I think your idea is best, but I purchased within my means.

The Octavia is good value for money in todays market. Ive just taken delivery of a PHEV estate in petrol blue and so far it's been a very competent car which is incredibly easy to drive. The infotainment system is slow to load though and is infuriating at times. My iV model doesn’t have much less power at 204bhp and with a chunk of that coming from its electric motor it does move when you put your foot down. Its not perfect but I think it'll be very good to live with. And if you could still order one it was only £34k which is great value for a PHEV.

I just bought pre-registered 200bhp diesel hatchback at a very good saving on the list price. As far as I can tell no more diesels are being produced, and the announced 265bhp petrol version also does not seem to be available either. I hope Skoda have not discontinued the Octavia. So far the car is brilliant and I am running it in carefully. The only thing that concerns me for the future is the wheels, firstly because the roads are so badly potholed for low profile tyres, and secondly because the polished parts of the wheels will be difficult to repair if kerbed.

Thanks for a really interesting review. I love the quality and value of Skodas. Me and the wife have had four between us. I bought a petrol manual VRS a couple of years ago and it’s been fantastic all rounder. I got one of the last mk3 versions (69 reg) due to the really dodgy reputation the most recent version has for infotainment. I’m not ever selling this. Easy 45mpg on a run and 245bhp. Yes please.

What more can be said that hasn’t already, the Octavia is a truly competent car, with the added sporty fun in the VRS. An Audi mechanic from a local dealership said to me (and no doubt to others to) that if you wanted a reliable (time proven) car, don’t buy an Audi - get the Skoda equivalent. Spoke volumes to me!

Got a similar car as the one you reviewed, except mine has every option except for 360 camera and Canton (chip shortage) in black and 6spd manual. Massaging power memory seats, Pano roof plus many other things... I have owned it for 2+ years now and the infotainment has gotten much better thanks to constant OTA updates. I get about 6.5L/100km driving it at 130-140 here in Germany... Haven't yet found the speed limiter at 268 indicated..or 261 GPS. Gearing in the Octavia is longer than the MK8 GTi actually so the car actually is more economical and does a better 100-200 as well.

These should be able to do considerably more than 40 on a run. I managed close to 50 on longer trips with my MK3 petrol VRS with the 220ps variant. Great car - those seats are naff though and very cheap feeling. The optional microsuede ones are excellent and should be what they fitted standard, but very pricey.

That colour is absolutely superb (ha), definitely the one to go for! If I had need for the space, I'd undoubtedly go for the Octavia VRS. Not a huge fan of the wheels, but I'm a fan of everything else so I could certainly live with them. (For now for my needs, I'm eyeing up a MK7.5 GTI/GTD or MK3 TT/TTS, maybe an i30N. Either way they're all a step up from my Fabia 😄)

I’d be seriously tempted by this or a superb. I like the Audi brand and the two my parents had were both really good. But both they and I baulk at the cost of them now to get the model and specs we’d want, whereas the Skoda Octavia and superb tick all the boxes at the right price. I’d be happy to go with the vrs - how much more performance can you realistically use on the road? Or do you need? I’d put the money I’d save over getting an Audi S4 into a deposit on something a little cheeky that’d put a grin on m6 face, maybe a happily used booster….
