The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is an EV that is not an SUV ! The car world seems to be obsessed with SUVs yet for me a more obvious practical all electric car is an estate format car. In this video I share my first drive of the brand new all electric Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer.

A vastly more expensive estate option than the MG5. Stellantis pruices for electric cars is ridiculous and the depreciation is brutal.

Couldn't agree more. I can only guess they do amazing deals on fleet bulk buys. Otherwise I don't know how the stellantis group sell any cars.

True but no one pays those prices - check out the discounts on Corsa EV’s, you can get £10k easily off those. I have no idea why Stellantis put out these fantasy list prices, maybe it’s just how the market works here so they can give fleets ‘discounts’, when they are nothing of the sort. In 12 months time these will be £20k or less and then they make sense.

Depreciation is really a major factor if you lease. And let's face it, most of these Astra's will be acquired on leases. This should make them a decent buy at 2 to 3 years old.....

As a business user of Ev's. Estate car is great with good efficiency. But it needs a 60 or 70 kWh battery to get over 330 miles in Summer and 280 in Winter. Doing a day's driving without having to use very expensive public charging is important. (ev charger price x3 = p/litre). Most chargers cost over £2/litre equivalent.
@graemecollie9233
@graemecollie9233 6 ай бұрын
I keep seeing this about public chargers but if you're going to use them get a subscription charge card, for a monthly fee it significantly reduces the charge cost. For example, Elli offer a contract at £12.99 per month which reduces Ionity charging from 79p/kWh to 31p/kWh. If you use over 200 kWh a month the monthly subscription breaks down to about 6p/kWh so then your cost is 37p/kWh which is about the same price as domestic standard variable rate electricity but charging 25-30x faster. Other charging providers do similar schemes, in the US they get charging for free for the life of the car on Electrify America with certain marques when you buy new. The issue is ICE ownership has been so convenient that when people are asked to put a little time, thought and effort in it is seen as a huge inconvenience when it isn't. Remember when it was a travesty asking drivers to put seatbelts on and making it law?
@Discovery_Dad
@Discovery_Dad 6 ай бұрын
@@graemecollie9233 The problem though is you end up needing multiple subscriptions as you can't guarantee you are going to be on a route that includes a free, working charger of your subscribed company. That then starts to erode the cost case again. What really needs to happen is for there to be some kind of regulation on public charging so that the price discrepancies aren't as wild. Whilst we all know motorway service stations are not the cheapest, they aren't 2-3x the price of non-motorway prices. At the moment it's a free for all, and companies are taking advantage of the fact that there's a good chance you really can't go anywhere else, or even volt & bolt.... Sure, home charging is slow, but that generally doesn't matter as is you can charge at home you most likely charge overnight where speed is not a concern. You shouldn't have to only travel via routes that have a particular charger. That's not being lazy. Comparing to seat belts is not a good comparison. They didn't constrain you to only going to certain petrol stations, they just constrained you to the seat you were already in.

Now THAT'S a proper car. Can't beat an estate! Less height, less flab. I even like the display; it doesn't scream for attention. With conventional instruments, I've gotten used to instrument binnacles with a hood-like surround to keep the glare off the instruments in the sunshine. Do you find that glare on the "instruments" is a problem in your driving routine? I've not heard other KZbinrs mention this, so I just wondered... And..what's this? Proper buttons for the HVAC? What'll they think of next? Your report is a most welcome one. I would buy one of these! Aloha.

I do like the Astra design but as with the Corsa and Mokka, I'm not happy with the prices. Stellantis use the same batteries and motors on ALL of their range so they have the advantages of Mass Production, yet they are not passing on the efficiencies. Taking a petrol model and adding £10,000 to get to the EV model is simply too much. A £40,000 Astra is too high. Add the massive depreciation where a 2 year old Mokka EV is worth £15,000... what this will be worth?? £20,000??

Suppose it depends how you look at it. When you compare it to a Tesla model 3 / Y, prices are similar but build quality I imagine is far better. I agree they’re still rather expensive and resale value remains to be seen. But the car itself seems quite nice. All depends on what you’re looking for.

@rtownz251251 I'm certainly no fan of Tesla and I personally have the Citroën E-C4, but the interior build quality of the 2024 Model 3 is far far better than Vauxhall. It is more at BMW level. Of course Model 3 is Saloon so you can only think Model Y vs Astra Estate. In which case... Model Y hands down!! Look at Auto Car MG4 Long Range vs Model 3 (about 1 mth ago)... Long Range drive test.... Also, I have noticed the public charging has gone up over the last 6 months. Tesla public charging is around 3 x cheaper than BP etc. I charge mostly at home so I am OK.

A Grandland petrol auto and the difference was instant.A lot more comfortable,plenty enough power for me and a really nice drive.I hadn't really thought about buying a Vauxhall but my car changed my mind and so far (touch wood) no problems.So I now see Vauxhall as a real option although I think that there can be a bit of badge snobbery against the brand,but that is is something that has never been in my thoughts.

Great review and good looking car. Vauxhall have always made good cars so don’t understand why people sneer at the brand they are no worse than most competitors. I’ve had Vauxhalls for forty years and only had one dud built and designed in Germany. The only problem now are the prices since Stellantis was formed prices are ridiculous but I must be in a minority as plenty of people are buying them just like Ryan air despite all the add ones they are no 1 . So we can now state that in Europe and the UK we love to be ripped off.

Hi Ped Appreciate your enthusiasm for the estate car, which happens to suit your lifestyle. Personally I do believe that buyers of SUV’s also make their choice largely based on lifestyle and not current fashion. Downside with this car again is the range question, price and future depreciation. One fur the question I would put to your audience is, if we did not face the forthcoming ban on ICE, how many people would be considering purchase of an EV? Compulsion without the overall support of the population is questionable.

It is good to see an estate car review. I hope this trend of SUV’s is just a fashion, but I fear not as it is all about false sense of security. Interestingly in France, that SUV fashion has not really caught on which is strange compared to UK our narrow bumpy roads, the french roads are smoother, wider and far less traffic but they mainly drive small and mid size cars. The only thing with this Astra is that I think it will depreciate heavily as £40,000 plus is a lot compared to the base model estate.

I moved after two 3 series tourings to a Macan due to wet flooded country roads and the Touring's lack of wading depth becoming an issue both locally in Sussex and in East Angia. Otherwise, I do see the ultimate laws of Physics advantages of the lower set estate setup. I think Vauxhall have done an excellent job with the Astra Sports tourer EV. However, for my use, I would like a 350 mile electric range rather than 240. The longer range gives journey planning flexibility advantages especially when visiting rural areas like Mid Wales and East Anglia

Nice review Pete, and a welcome sight to see an estate rather than yet another SUV clone. I think that isn't a too bad looker, the side and front/side is a good looking thing. Rear end, not that much of a fan, the lights with a black surround not sure, and the rest of it is a bit bland compared to the front, but that said it's not 'ugly' in any way. Interior looks ok, rear room isn't bad, seats look ok, it's not bad at all ! I'm not a fan of screens but I know all new cars have them, not a lot we can do it is what it is. I know I will be forced into an EV eventually, even though I really don't like them, but it's inevitable and this might be an option. @@davidvestey6014 Well that's not strictly true matey. You might prefer an EV, because an EV works for you ie how you charge it and the usage, and that is perfectly fine & dandy. To say an EV is much faster is not true. Even my little tuned M140i hatch was faster than almost all EV's, up to and including Tesla model 3 dual motors, only the Model S was faster, and you would expect that seeing as it starts at £93,480 !! You say smoother but again, I disagree, the ZF8 auto torque converter in many modern cars is an amazing gearbox, and in comfort mode you can not tell it is changing gear at all, it is so smooth. You say more relaxing, which is a fair point, but not the full story. Relaxing because it's silent yes I get that, but a nice 5 series BMW for example, with an auto g/box, is a lot more relaxing because the ride is so much better than the Tesla. More Fun ?? No. No No No. What is fun about a heavy, understeery, silent EV ? Absolutely disagree. Fun is cornering and nimbleness, changing of direction, fun is a pleasant exhaust note rasping away up to the redline, no way could you say the average EV is fun, sorry but NO. It's NOT fun trying to get a charger at your local charge point to work in the pissing rain, and having to wait for an hour in a grotty starbucks with screaming kids while your battery car charges up again.

The elephant in the room is that many EV prices are insane, and Vauxhall are among the worst offenders; it feels like journalists are gaslighting us when ignoring or barely mentioning this, instead talking about PCPs making things more affordable. Beyond this, EVs remain a realistic option only for the minority of motorists that can charge at home.

And, let's face it, Vauxhall hasn't got a brand reputation that is significantly better than MG. I like it, but sadly I don't think MG's going to feel the heat from Stellantis' offerings. But I'm sure it'll be popular in the used market when it'll probably be only a grand or two more than the equivalent MG5. Probably only stacks up on PCP, or as a fleet acquisition.

A new base model Ioniq 5 58kw with heatpump option is listed at €44,495 on the Hyundai website. Bigger battery, bigger boot, sliding rear seat, better looking? I think I'd go for the Hyundai, to be honest. The Astra is overpriced by between £5,000 and £7500, I think.

Stellantis share EV drivetrains across their various ranges which should result in economies of scale. However, this car, nice as it looks, is now priced against the entry level Tesla model 3 which has just been reduced to £39,990. So what would most buyers prefer, taking projected depreciation into account?

£40-45k for an Astra and probably at least 60% depreciation over 3 years. I just couldn't do it.

Well there it is. Very similar luggage capacity to my current Astra Estate. It's the car I would buy immediately if I had both the cash and the ability to charge it at home! But I have neither. And if I won millions on the lottery or summat, I'd still have to buy a different house, prolly much nearer my sister's place, so I wouldn't need the range for visits and . . . Hmm 🤔 Hehe, no I'd most likely by this anyway.

Not much of advancement when Hyundai got over 5 miles /KWH from their Ioniq back in 2018. No regen adjustment is a no no. The external road noise from the tyres appeared to be very loud. Not a bad looking motor but is a compliance car. As usual, way overpriced.

Nice looking car, but why would anyone in their right mind pay ten grand more than the ICE version for the equivalent battery-mobile, and then experience monster depreciation? Makes no sense to me. And why does the only hybrid (a much more sensible answer to the EV question) attract VED of £560 when it's pushing out so little in the way of emissions?
@jeremyradford5103
@jeremyradford5103 6 ай бұрын
Probably because real-world emissions for a hybrid are far higher than the manufacturer quoted figures. Real driving emissions (RDE) may be up to 4x higher quoted, with companies like Toyota receiving large fines for underestimating emissions and overestimating mpg.
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 6 ай бұрын
Depreciation isn't quite the same sock factor if you lease, and most of these will be acquired via leasing. And buying the ICE version will no longer be an option after about 2027..... We will see quite a few ICE cars from various makers begin to disappear after 2025, when Euro 7 emissions laws roll out. Many car makers say it will add £2 to £3k onto the price of ICE cars to meet Euro 7......

I went and sat in the Astra hatchback several months ago and what struck me was the amount of gloss black plastic surrounding the screens. It looks really cheap and nasty. It's the standard version, if you pay extra the whole panel will be in black glass with a smooth surface instead. With built-in filters to protect light reflections in the windscreen. Built on an underlying magnesium panel. That one, on the other hand, looks as expensive and sophisticated as it is. That panel was delayed by a whole year because it was supposed to be made in Ukraine, so production had to be moved to another country, therefore there are few cars with the expensive panel out yet. In the simpler panel the instrument screen is recessed a little bit, this is because it lacks the expensive light filter and therefore has to have a cover above it to prevent the screen from being seen in the windscreen at night

Looks ok and practical, but there’s nothing that excites and makes me want to own one. Also I’ve noticed that EV reviews are very ‘efficiency’ based. I do get why (clearly they take longer to refuel than an ICE), but at the end of the day, the same physics apply to EV and they do to ICE. An SUV ICE is less aerodynamic than an estate ICE and will be less efficient. I guess that as charging speeds and battery efficiency improve, this will be less of a focus.
@davidsworld5837
@davidsworld5837 6 ай бұрын
you stated price but the EV prices start at 40K but there was an extra £500 for the 7.4 kW onboard charger. This will not do as well as the far cheaper MG5 does. for the 40K you are too close to the price of the Tesla. But yes there is far too few Estate cars that are electric. the market is ful of SUV's.

Seems overpriced - certainly at the fully loaded end of the range. But the estate car vibe I can support. Had an Audi A6 allroad BiTdi (and an A4 1.9 Tdi before that which I owned for 8 years). The allroad was a brilliant car. Yes it was diesel but it was FAST and economical and had loads of space. The other thing I'm hearing from folks I'm meeting who have dogs (we have our first dog, a now 3 year old Labrador) is that estates are much easier for them to jump into as they get older. My Volvo XC60 T8 has the air suspension so you can drop the rear end but I know it does not go as low as my allroad did... Time to think dog owners.

Good to see the more traditional cars starting to electrify. The truth is though that new EV buyers is predominantly business users. We are missing that sweet spot for private money. You know the Ford Focus equivalent rather than the 3 series type. I think Stellantis are showing some real promise, but clearly can’t compete with the Chinese or Tesla for lower production costs. It’s certainly interesting times! Thanks for the review!

Just want to point out that nearly every motoring journalist champions bespoke ev platforms for cars. The end result is a big heavy car with poor efficiency. They also rubbish Ev's based on a shared platform with fossil cars. These are typically a lot lighter and far more efficient. Have these journalists got an agenda? Something isn't better when it is worse. Classic Ioniq and Kona 5 miles/kWh are prime examples compared to Ioniq 5 and EV6 3.5 miles/kWh.

@technohamster4783 I'm not sure what you mean by that. All cars depreciate roughly 40% in the first 3 years of ownership. The reason for higher depreciation amongst EVs in the first half of this year is multifaceted, but used prices are actually starting to rise due to increased demand, whereas used car prices in general are falling.
