probably the best review/showcase I've ever seen, seriously. You let the piano do the talking and took your time with each sound. Not to mention the fact that i could actually feel how much you enjoyed playing it. 10/10 lads, subbed.

Mate... I've got the SV-1 73 as my live keyboard. The best live keyboard I've EVER had. Fun, great sounds (electric piano and real piano) and so much soul. I love Nord but this beats the crap out of any Nord. This is so much fun! And that is the bottom line. Music should be FUN!!

I had this keyboard from 2014 to 2016, I absolutely loved it. I wrote songs on it that only sound good with this specific board and specific factory settings. For some dumb reason I traded it in on a different brand with a lot of electronic gizmos and oddball sounds that I will never use. I regretted it and I’m happy to say that I just purchased a new one and it arrives tomorrow! Can’t wait to be reunited with this amazing piece of equipment.

There's something very special about the SV-1 that facilitates developing a very special playing relationship with it. The RH3 keybed's feel and action, the incredibly beautiful and realistic sounds and mechanical special effects add to the playing experience. Despite the introduction of the new, more powerful GrandStage, as a stage piano, the SV-1 IMHO still holds its own. I think the newest red version looks pretty bad ass, but their all black model, too, looks awesome and perhaps more professional.

This is still such a great demo. I still come back just to hear that intro song. I love that Jack just allowed the sound to take him somewhere. Would love to see more videos like this. Do more videos of retro keyboards and just play and talk about the board.

It’s like asking is the les Paul still relevant? I love that it’s all knobs and dials. It has a gorgeous amount of awesome sounds, and it’s tube driven. I found this keyboard, after unhealthily lusting after nords for the the last couple years. This one is home for me. It’s amazing.

In todays world, every technological machine, more than 6 months old, seems to be obsolete. I don´t know why. I think that the SV-1 still is a great instrument. More than anything, you feel that is an instrument and not just another machine. I think it is a great peace of equipment, and don´t see the need to buy something newer just because it is newer. I love my SV-1 (with black and red keys). So cool.

Heavy for gigging but amazing for playing. It's simply a wonderful keyboard. Amazing for that classic rock vibe. Just a joy to play. Would recommend it to anyone. I played every keyboard in the Sweetwater store. This is the one I couldn't put down. Brought it home. Clav and a wah will get some amazing funky bass. The organs with tremello and amps are like nothing I've heard out of any keyboard. Could go on all day about it.

Owned a red 73 key version for the last 7 years and I still have yet to play pianos and EP’s on a keybed that feels as good as the SV1. Organs are shit, tube drive is only so useful, and yes it’s obviously very limited...and I don’t care. Own a Nord stage 3 and I still prefer the Rhodes, wurlis, and even a piano or two on the SV1. But the keybed-closest thing to the heavy grand piano action that’ll get you practicing those fast runs accurately!

I've had my Korg SV-1 for about 8 years and could not agree more with this assessment. The organ sounds are indeed such shit. Besides that, love the vintage look and feel, and it truly nails the Rhodes, wurlis sounds. It's really too bad about the organs, as it's the reason I'm now shopping around.

I think that as a professional artist myself, I would love to have one of these. The idea of having one dedicated unit that has pianos/EPs and other things that require a full keyboard is great. I love the idea of the simplistic nature of the unit. Press a button and you've got your sound. You need to adjust it on the fly? Done. Add more EFX? Done. That is what I look for in a unit as a bottom keyboard. All of the other units are simply for layering, except for a clonewheel (of which I'd have a Crumar Mojo or something). I love the idea of this unit, even more so than a Grandstage. I realize we have so much available to us these days with regard to sounds and such, but I frankly like the idea of the setups from back in the day. Having a great piano/EP/EP Grand as a stand alone unit that can layer other units via MIDI, a clonewheel, and other synth things available to me, is paramount. My normal live rig for big gigs consists of around 5-6 boards, because I want to play each one by itself if needed but also layer them together thru MIDI (except for the clonewheel). Sometimes it is nice to just play a unit dedicated to the basic piano/EP sounds. I still do this in my studio and it is fun to go back to basics. I have played the SV-1 in the past and would love to get one. It just seems really nice to have the 'old school' vibe to it and it allows for that kind of playability. When I am playing a unit like this, I don't want any keyboard splitting; I want the full expanse of the keyboard. I love the look of the unit too, as it adds to the vibe.

It's great for what it is. Great action, easy to use with a bunch of useful sounds. Is it the nicest sounding? I wouldn't say so, but it's easily good enough and with a band or ambient noise in the room you would hardly notice. Works great as a midi controller if you need higher quality samples also.

Had an original red one when they first came out, and part-exes it for Nord electro 5d73 after 6 years because of slight issues with the keybed and the flexibility of the Nord. The Nord is a great instrument apart from one thing...RHODES sounds. Loved the lightness, layer and split capabilities, sample download and organs. For me however a bottom keyboard is all about the Rhodes firstly, acoustic piano second and Clavs third. Had the Nord for about 18 months but sold it as couldn’t get on with the ep’s. Bought a Yamaha CP4, lovely sounds, fantastic keybed feel but made me realise how much I love a hands on keyboard. Re-enter the SV1 again, bought recently. Wow, this is what enjoyment is all about. I can’t believe however that Korg have not released an updated version. My suggestions: Additional Kronos piano & ep samples Increase 8 favourites Limiter/compression knob for levelling across patches. Keep the editor (works great for me) Better amp and overdrive (they go from nothing to over the top with not a lot between) Knobs should output midi cc Lighter weight Much better organs however I would not use this for organ so irrelevant for me. Some split capability would be good but not a dealbreaker for me Not withstanding the above the SV1 is so much fun to play, no menus, direct effects control, nice keybed and sounds great in a band context. LOVE IT

Nice demo. Thanks Jack! I believe if you like the ergonomics of the instrument and the sound, it will always be worth your money. Some people in here say it might not be relevant any longer simply because it is 10 yrs old. These same people would then HAVE to say my Steinway or my Hammond B3 are no longer relevant because the Steinway's strings and harp are 40 yrs old and the Hammond's tonewheels are 50 yrs old. Kinda silly when you think of it in that way. Bottom line is, just like "if you love your job you will never work a day in your life", if you love the sound, it will never be old. :)

Is the piano still relevant 300 years later? A good instrument is timeless. People still pay a lot (way too much in my opinion) for 30-40 year old synths because they’re looking for a specific vibe; not just the sound either. Some are inspired by certain aesthetics.

Asking whether the SV-1 is still relevent is a bit like asking if a Fender Rhodes or Wurlitzer is still relevent ... however great to see it having a proper review ... nice one Jack! ... had mine for about 6 or 7 years now, still love it, it feels like a proper instrument rather than a synth that does the sounds, the keybed plays beautifully and I've never had any issues with it (I think the early burgandy ended ones had a few probs, but it's Korg's top keybed, as used in the Kronos and it feels perfect). The organs and synths are a bit pointless really, but it's a stage vintage piano and it's a specialist ... and for that it's unbeatable!

Happy Christmas all. I'd love to see Jack do a showdown between the Nord, the Korg SV-1, the Yamaha Reface CP and the Roland RD 2000 maybe? Keyboard feel differences would be appreciated along with sound/sample/modelling variations. Would probably require an external controller at least on the Reface, and perhaps use the same controller on part of the test to remove different keyboard feels. I really dig Jack's humor on his videos and the compare videos I've seen him do have always seemed very fair.

I purchased a red limited edition reverse key (one of 500) a few years back and was excited to get it. I finally did and found only a couple of the pianos/Ep useful. I tried to incorporate it into my rig for larger jobs but always found myself going back to my Stage 2. I finally put it on Reverb and sold it and bought a Nord Stage 3 compact that I use nearly every day. The design of the SV1 is beautiful but not functional, in my opinion.

I have been struggling with whether to Keep my SV-1 and add an Electro 6D for organ and clav stuff, or trade the SV-1 on a Piano 4. Both options will cost me roughly the same money. So the choice is SV-1 and an Electro 6D OR just a Piano 4. I think this video has made up my mind to keep the SV-1 and add the Electro. You lose sight of how awesome something is once you've had it for a while. Plus the SV-1 looks freakin cool in the music room!!
@sam_rae
@sam_rae 5 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I'm thinking about as well! Add an Electro for organ sounds, or just go the whole hog and get a Nord Stage with hammer action. I'd really like an organ keybed, but by the time you spend the money on a Nord Electro, should you just spend a bit more and get the best stage keyboard around? The SV-1 editor software is getting old, and I'm not convinced it will work much longer. It's pushing me in the direction of going fully Nord, but I'm not convinced yet!

really gifted piano player! Great video, great SV-1. Wish you had tested sound pack #3 which adds a few really nice bass + piano/e-piano splits. Had a Rhodes MKII, sold it, (please, forgive me...) my 73s SV-1 which I own for 8Y now may not be as inspiring, but comes close. It can sound like the real thing. I see the Nord not as a competitor, it has a slightly different approach, much more costly, in some points ahead, the whole organs, pad, effects section, probably better in a band context, too. Hovever, the Nord Keybed is a compromise, has to be good for organs + pads. Wheras the Korg RH3 Keybed was developed for piano / epiano. It is nealy impossible to play a proper organ on it. After all, it does feel like a real instrument.

I sold my black sv1 because it had keybed problems when I played too loud in the central octave (crack!), In the mix the piano sound is not heard at all. The samples are very weak. Excellent electric piano and string sounds. Also the possibility of having your sounds without categories, completely deleting all the organs for example. The rest, however, is not worth the money spent. The editor is old. On some versions of Windows it does not work, except with a change I found in a forum because officially korg does not say anything. The pedal supplied, which allows the noise of the sustain pedal of the piano, if it breaks it is not possible to buy it again, because it does not exist on the market. The distortion if increased directly without first cancel it is very strong and terrible. The keyboard is RH3 is different from the one I have on my Kronos. On sv1 it is much tougher and noisy, although apparently it should be the same. To carry is convenient if you have its original bag (excellent!), But picking it up is complicated because it slips because of its rounded shape and has the unbalanced weight in the back. I was thrilled to have it, but I sold it almost immediately. Too old in conception and however with many faults. Unfortunately...

but does it have the rich sound of even a Kawai MP11? I guess to each their own but I need a keyboard to sound like a grand piano as much as possible, the rest is extra. I don't play but am around many who do and if I ever get a chance, I want one to learn on that sounds like a quality grand piano. Love your video, would love your input.

Is the Korg SV1 still relevant? Is a Steinway still relevant? Well, don´t think so. Steinway is just so 1920s I think. There are newer stuff out there etc. The companies struggle their asses off to make more and more "up to date" products. Of course electric pianoes have developed a lot through the last 20 years, but in the end of the day, I brilliant player can make a toy sound great, and a bad one can´t even make a Steinway sing. I love my SV1 even if there are newer models out there. Great video. Good fun!

That word "relevant" is one that I am willing to hate with the greatest of ease. That one, TOO, is thrown around way too much these days. "Relevant", like virtually any musical instrument, is what you make out of it. As an example, I know probably hundreds - may thousands of people - that hate Hammond's FIRST attempt at replacing the B3, the solid state B-3000. The cheesy little thing that many people think that it is. I have a friend, however - actually, I have two - that can mould that creation, the B-3000 - around their hands and work music out of it that most people never thought possible (one of the same gentleman, my lifetime musical mentor and GOD, could also work up a Hammond B-200 into a musical frenzy like none other, even though he had 15 B3 / Leslie 122 combos at his disposal through his own rental business! I can send you a clip if you doubt me. The point of this wandering saga: EVERY INSTRUMENT can be relevant if you're willing to sit down and make friends with it, and learn how to showcase its best qualities and even make purses out of those sow's ears (those features) that might not seem so beautiful on the surface. Yes, I have an SV-1 88, reverse color Limited / Special Edition. I play it at least an hour and a half every day. I also have.... *a 1963 Hammond A-100 (self contained B3) / Leslie 122 *a 1959 Hammond C3 / Leslie 122 - show room condition, came with all of its original warranties from **1959** that have long since expired, all original paperwork, books, service and owners manuals and not a scratch on her. This was the first Hammond organ I had ever heard in my life - when I was 2 weeks old - on May 26, 1968 in a church! Not one just like it. Not a similar model. The self same organ that I was raised listening to in church. *a 1969 Hammond E-100 ("poor man's A-100") / Leslie 122 *a 1979 Rhodes 88 Suitcase Mark I, again, with all original papers, including the original SALES RECEIPT from the first owner. It had only two owners before me. Not a scratch on her. She came with the little baggy of spare replacement tines, the tuning chart, sales brochures, owners manuals, etc. *a 1973 Rhodes 73 Stage. She was a road dog, for sure, but she plays well. I paid $110 for her at an estate sale. How bad can she be? :D *a 1964 Wurlitzer 140B a 1969 Farfisa Fast 2 a Roland synth a Casio "Groove Synth" XW-G1 a Casio Previa, a great digital piano a Korg MS-20 synth modler WAY too many MIDI controllers, attached to 2 separate dedicated music computers in my sound studio. mixers, amps, and tons more crap....auto harp, a bass guitar which I can't play, a xylophone....2 full size acoustic pianos (I had 3 until a couple weeks ago), an 1899 reed / pump organ.... I said ALL that to say this: I have a lot of the "real stuff" that the SV-1 produces in the same room, inches from it. Yes, the Hammond voices SUCK horribly on the SV-1 - Korg would have done well to use this space for something else - ANYTHING ELSE - entirely. No, just because I have 3 of the real thing in the room, I am certainly not opposed to digital Hammonds and their clones. I so wish I owned one - or a dozen! :D digital Hammond products and or their equivalents. But, alas, I don't. Damned near everything capable of producing a musical note can be "relevant". Even blowing across a bottle. There absolutely must be another word. :D Peace!

@@cristiannegron5068 I've had my SV-1 at least 2 - 3 years and I play it at leas 2 hours every day. Although I have 2 acoustic pianos in the house, one other full size digital and a couple Rhodes (I have 33 keyboard instruments, too many to get into in this space. :D ) , the SV- 1 is my trusty 'workhorse'. I've had no problems with this keyboard, whatsoever. I DO wish it was lighter so I could gig with it easier. I'm 5' 4" tall, but, other than that, in my opinion, it's a fantastic keyboard.

The only reason I chose the SV1 over a Nord is the price, interface, and cool factor; Nord destroys the SV1 it in every other aspect. I'm hoping the SV2 redeems it for me, but, Nord is unbeatable in regard to sound.

How do you update something was intended to be retro? Even more to the point, why bother? I suppose they could add more memory, or more voices. But it is so good....Perhaps there is room for more tone accuracy or diversion in a few voices? Great piano, anyway. I take it Korg don't supply a razor?
