I liked it because it held the tension. After such a long movie, when we get to the final duel I truly didn’t know who was going to win. They legitimately made it so that both combatants could’ve won and it would have been believable. Masterfully done!

As a teenage guy who does historical European fencing, and broadsword fighting, I can verify that Klavan is correct in saying that women do not fare well in sword fights. My class is mixed sex, and even in sport fencing (which is not as brutal is to the death fencing), skilled, seasoned women will frequently lose to guys who just started a month or two ago.

@@MicahCTheory at the place I go to, we rotate the type of sword we focus on training with. We do foil, sabre, epee, and broadsword, and generally focus on one sword each month, making it a 4 month rotation. I also sometimes practice duel wielding a rapier and dagger with a few of the guys there who have been there for a long time. We mostly do Olympic style fencing, but when it's broadsword month, we generally study from the "German Longsword Study Guide" which is a compilation of a ton of historical manuscripts. My fencing instructor is actually a really interesting guy, he's travelled to a ton of countries around the world, and spent a lot of time in Hungary, training in different fencing styles from fencing masters from a lot of different countries. So to answer your question, when we practice broadsword, it's really a variety of manuscripts mainly coming out of the "German Longsword Study Guide", but we don't particularly use many manuscripts for the Olympic style stuff.

I like Cappo Farro for rapier. I would like to learn I 33 for sword and buckler one day. I have also done Battodo. I am a black belt in that.

My one issue: All medieval movies are portrayed as a everything being dreary, drab and dark. It is always overcast, and there is very little color. There was a sun in the middle ages. It was NOT always cloudy. The Cathedrals were filled with color. They would have filled their homes and castles with color. I know they made everything dark because it set the mood, but all middle age movies have this negative mood.

Most of the Cathedrals you speak of weren’t built until the renaissance which comes after the medieval period. The Medieval period usually has dreary settings because it’s literally a period in time where Europeans and Mediterranean peoples were rebuilding themselves after the fall of Roman Empire. Humans literally had lost knowledge on how to create sewer systems. And that wasn’t restarted until later on. The bubonic plague was killing millions plus the crusades in the Middle East. Medieval times were raw.

Arcane also felt like a story written by adults for adults (which was super unexpected). It explores interesting and mature themes that felt like they were going to trend "woke" but then thankfully never did. It's a story with strong, deeply flawed female characters, but more deeply it's a touching story that explores the profundity of father-daughter relationships, albeit in a tragic sense. It's one of the most compelling new stories I've come across in a while, not to mention the insane artistic talent and creativity of the animators. Reminiscant of Into the Spiderverse.

I doubt they were as fit as they're generally portrayed. They just couldn't be. That level of athleticism would require full time personal trainers and nutritionists. Likely they fought in a kind of buddy system back then. I'll fight for two minutes, then you step in to spell me sort of thing.

I’m just speaking as someone with a cursory interest in medieval times. Medieval armies were not particularly malnourished in most cases. Common knowledge is that an army marches on its stomach (as well as the promise of pay and loot). Therefore if you had an army you were definitely keeping them fed. As for the battles, a frontline trooper would be expected to cycle out with a reserve fighter after engaging with the enemy for a short time to rest as the battle flowed elsewhere down the line since it is very exhausting to be in a melee, wearing heavy armor, facing down a crowd of people trying to kill you. In truth, casualties in these types of engagements would be fairly small. The real killing usually happened while “routing” an enemy force that had broke ranks and were retreating as that’s when the bloodlust kicks in seeing these men that had just been trying to kill you flee for their lives. Hollywood medieval battles always have a certain degree of flair and audiences are accustomed to seeing a single soldier cut down dozens of enemies just because he has some importance to the plot. The real combat wouldn’t make for as exciting a scene.

Fit is relative. Could they run a marathon, clean and press body weight, or have visible abs? Probably not. Could they walk all day, put on 30-50lbs of armor and fight? Yes. Look at guys like Tyson Fury or Feydor Emelianeko, not in shape, but definitely fit for their sport.

They used to train all day in their armour while horseriding and wielding heavy weapons. They were fitter than we are today. Today people go to the gym and workout for a few hours then go home and sit on the couch in front of the telly eating snacks with the aircon on. These guys _lived_ a workout. It's why they looked like they were 40 when they were 25. There was even one case of a knight doing flips and somersaults and pull ups and whatnot in his plate mail armour. These guys were hardcore. Also, as nobles, they ate very well. Probably a better diet than we eat today, because they didn't have all the refined sugar and processed foods we eat today. Their cattle and sheep would have been all grass fed (giving ample vitamin K2). Their vegetables probably not washed to within an inch of their lives, giving the benefits of small exposure to the soil. So they were a lot fitter and tougher than people today. Even the common soldier had to march for days with heavy gear.

After Richard III's remains were discovered beneath a city-centre car-park in 2012, analysis of the medieval English king's remains showed that when living he was infested with intestinal roundworms. This would have been a common condition at the time, and a result of using human faeces as crop-fertiliser. The living conditions and levels of nutrition meant that people back then were smaller in stature, which is evident from surviving clothing, armour etc. Having said that, medieval British archers were able to draw war-bows of up to 185 lbs draw-weight. Almost no-one alive today has developed the specific muscle sets required to emulate that ability.

From what I hear, that movie makes Christian societies look gray and dreary, while Islamic areas a bright and vibrant and so full of life, and and Scott did this intentionally (he's apparently something of a rabid Christophobe, from what I've heard and read about him). For that reason, I never wanted to watch it.

I think my dad and I were at the theater to see cry macho and the trailer for this movie played… Ridley Scott is a Director who has come out many times saying that trailers should be directed or at least have input by the directors again. When you see the original trailer to the first alien movie, it’s actually a type of art all on its own. The trailer for the last duel looked so bad my dad and I just turned to each other in the theater and couldn’t stop from making awful comments. So I’m very surprised to hear Andrew say this because some of these trailers go out of their way to make me not watch a movie I probably wasn’t interested in anyway.

Cry macho was just awful. I started it on a plane because it looked like a pretty straight forward Clint Eastwood movie, but had to stop it around half an hour into it because it was dreadful. Clint Eastwood movies have earned the right to be somewhat repetitive and cheesy, but this was another level. Every one of his movie stereotypes is maxed out, and the acting was just plain horrible. Felt like a poor man's Gran Torino.

WTF? Completely the wrong take. This is a feminist film to its core. It's ahistorical, has nothing to do with the source material, craps all over the idea of a hero, and every male character is portrayed as evil. It doesn't even come close to being a version of Rashomon. How the hell can it be a version of Rashomon if the female character's point of view in the third act is the de facto truth and there's no ambiguity left at all? Especially in the contemporary context, it's essentially a feminist film. Don't watch it if you don't liked to be preached at.

If you think it was accurate and unbiased then that's YOUR perception of it. There was no objective indication that her viewpoint was the only truth, it was presented as her own opinion, the same as the other two. The facts were more or less the same, but seen from different angles, or not seen at all. One character would not be aware of what the others had seen, and so forth.

Klavan uses the phrase "medieval sword fight" to describe a thing generally depicted as brawl in full armour, this depiction is at best an oversimplification by the movies. I agree with the idea that a brawl to the death in full armour would kill women up against men. The reason the phrase "medieval sword fight" irritates the HEMA community is that you're talking about an entire continent and a period of over a thousand years. That included times where judicial duels occurred with had rules to even those odds, sport fencing with rules to disregard strength or even self defence where only one party had a sword. Swords aren't poison for women, but the basic point that men are literally evolved to hunt and to fight other humans which gives them an overwhelming advantage in any brawl, including a brawl in full armour as depicted in movies is accurate, regardless of whether movie depictions are.

My biggest problem with this movie is the narrative that women have no legal agency in medieval Europe. That is an absurdity. Women could bring charges against men freely. And certainly a noble woman would have their case taken seriously. Also the idea that if she is caught lying she will be burned at the stake is, as far as i can tell, a complete fiction. The punishment for that was generally fines, or imprisonment (until a fine was paid). My guess is the story had to have more extreme stakes for the woman because both men were fighting to the death and it would have come across as having lopsided consequences if she can just walk away after forcing them to kill each other.

I liked the movie but I disliked a few elements. One thing would be the lack of different version of events of which I can only recall two, which is when they are on horses charging into battle and the banquet scene outside. I think there may have been a dinner scene with different versions as well. For instance, during the banquet scene Adam’s character viewed Matt’s character as hostile whereas Matt’s character viewed himself as calm and collected. I would have liked a few more of the repeat scenes that showed the differences. I also disliked when it transitioned to the girl’s story, the words lingered implying her version of events is the real one when the purpose of showcasing three different perspectives is for the audience to decide. I quickly skimmed some reading about the last duel weeks before watching the movie in theaters and I thought that Adam’s real life character maintained his innocence whereas the movie’s character admitted he had sex with her but with her consent. I plan to eventually read the historical accounts to better understand France’s last duel and the events surrounding it.

I actually saw the Wallace Sword in Stirling Castle, Scotland. Out of curiosity went to wiki: The blade of the sword measures 4 feet 4 inches in length and including the hilt is 5 feet 4 inches The breadth of the blade varies from 2.25 inches at the guard to 0.75 inches before the point. The sword weighs 5.95 pounds. What woman could fight with that? Deadly looking, though.

The problem with "femminism" is not that we want to do what men do (I agree with you on the sword fighting and I WOULD NOT have wanted to be a knight in the middle ages), the problem is being able to do what we want whenever we want it, then let us decide if we're good at it or not. It's about women having equal OPPORTUNITIES. That's why I don't blame anyone that embraces their role as a mother and stay at home and take care of the kids and clean while husband goes to work, but I don't blame any woman who has kids and WANTS to have a career and WANTS to be paid the same salary as a man doind her exact same job either. A gripping drama for sure. Only real gripe was the woman's point-of-view being shown as the definitive truth. Especially given the fact that historical accounts state both she and her husband became very famous and wealthy due to him winning the duel. Not necessarily saying she was lying, but some more ambiguity might have been more fitting in my opinion.

It does not show her version as the definitive version. It is very subtle in its presentation. Even Jacques view is very subtle in terms of the rape. Most modern people watching that would think that his scene was rape but not actually have any historical or cultural reference to understand the scene.

Great Movie! But I think there is a big difference between medieval fantasy and medieval period piece. The Witcher takes place in a fantasy realm abt a literal monster hunter fighting dragons, so women fighting in combat in that world shouldn't be held to the same realism standards as a medieval period piece.

I liked the movie, but only after you realise it's like "Rashomon". I thought it was boring in the first act, and the fight scenes weren't bad, but it was no "Gladiator". Also, I kinda hate to say it, but we live in a post-Game of Thrones world, so guys in armour with swords hitting each other isn't that exciting. Overall, it's a good movie, but a shorter cut where the three perspectives are melded into one would probably work better.

I watch it on opening day for my 22nd birthday, and I loved it so much that I didn't want the movie to end. It was definitely Best Picture of the Year

Women were pitted against men in the medieval duel (rarely). Although the man was buried up to his waist with one hand literally tied behind his back and still seldom lost. Thus proving your point.

It's pretty much He Said, She Said: The Movie. I did like it but my only complaint would be, for a movie this long, I still felt like it was in need of more story. Even the writer of the book admitted that a lot of gaps had to be filled because nobody really knew what actually happened (except the three people). It was all based on their testimonies.

My folks had 3 theaters when I was a kid growing up. I really miss good movies but it was a different time and movies have in so way changed. I listen to Klavan for movie's I would like to spend money to go see.

I liked it. What made it long was the retelling of the story from each point of view. Oh and as I said before I like seeing women in fight scenes. I Watch movies to be entertained not based on how realistic they are.

I've seen it and I kind of have to disagree on the point about the movie being politically correct. Ridley Scott has a long history of making historical movies "woke" and The Last Duel is no exception. One interesting example of that might be how the final scene claims the wife basically only had one child and raised him alone, trying to make her out to be a heroic single mother, when the book clearly states she had several children and her husband stayed with her for years after the Duel.

There still something computer enhanced about the fight scenes and therefore a bit unrealistic. I personally feel the examples of trial by combat as depicted in 'El Cid' with Charlton Heston (1961) and the original film version of 'Ivanhoe' with Robert Taylor (1953) about the most accurate. Agreed, was very good movie in a time when they’re few and far between. And ironically I just watched a movie based off his book “Don’t say a word”. The movie stunk.
