Very cool. Picked up one as well. 8core D700s, Adjusted fan curve, overclocked to 950mhz and use it as a gaming PC.

I have been editing video at a pro level on TV channels for more than 20 years, and all my life I have worked with a Mac Pro, now, I bought a 2013 trash can, I had never tried it, the truth is I had my doubts at the beginning, but 60 days of working With it at full steam, (even in 4K) I can say that this computer is like a good wine, it has aged well, to the point of being at the same level of pro use after more than 10 years. I think this has been the most despised computer at first, but I consider it to be the best of all. And the best of all is that upgrading this computer is much cheaper compared to the current Mac Pro. I can say that if you are a professional editor and you do not need to generate 3D graphics that demand high performance... this is the ideal computer to create a powerful Editing Island.

I just bought one 3 days ago. 3.5 6 core, 64gb ddr3 , 1tb ssd, with the dual d500's. Got it for 275 off FB marketplace. First thing I did was install open core and install Sonoma. Works Great!

Great video! And good warning about the Power Supply. Holding the 6,1's power button for 10 seconds discharges the capacitors (to be even safer). Thanks for the teardown! 😎

Just purchased this (eBay 2024, plenty of them and good prices) to set up a small VMWare Lab. I was going to mess with ESXi bare metal installations, but think I’m going to get away with setting up in VMWare Fusion instead and use the MacOS as a daily driver. I managed to pick up the 12 core 2.7GHz, 64GB RAM, and a 500GB SSD which I will likely upgrade for just over $400 ($470 after tax/shipping), and thanks to your video, I can see this will be considerably easier than upgrading the CPU ;) Overall your video was a good basic and realistic teardown and an honest review. I gave it a like, keep up the good work.

I bought my 2013 Mac Pro a couple of years ago from eBay. It was an 8 core XEON processor with 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD, and dual D500 video cards. I upgraded the RAM to 128 GB RAM. I use it to run various Mac programs, and it works great. In my job, we are a Windows shop, so I installed Parallels Desktop along with a few Windows 10/11 VMs for work. It runs great. I have a M1 Mac Mini and a M! Mac Studio Max, both still in the box, with the intention of replacing the 2013 Mac Pro, but it runs so well, I'm in no rush to do so. It ain't broke, so why fix it?

In December 2023 I decided to order a Mac Pro 6,1 from eBay. Went with the 12 core, D-700s, 64 GB RAM, and 1TB ssd. I really like it for code development, writing, and general office work. It also looks great on the desk.

I recently did the exact same thing. I have a 14" M1 Pro for the laptop and just picked up a Mac Pro late 2013, d500s, 64GB of ram and still has the 512 GB SSD. I have an E5-2667v2 8 core ready to go in it. Went for this specific CPU due to the large cache and high boost speed of 4.0ghz. Planning to use it for desktop stuff whilst being synced to the laptop via iCloud. light video editing, VMware Fusion home lab, and looking pretty is its job.

this Mac is the CHEAPEST per power that you can get on the used market and can be upgraded to rival an m1 MacBook Air (in benchmarks). it runs macOS Sonoma like butter with OCLP and ive not had a single issue. if you do buy one max it out it cost me ~30 dollars to put the 2.7Ghz 12 core cpu and 64GB of ram. make sure you clean all the dust out of the fan at. the very least. this computer is definitely capable of lasting several more years as a basic Mac desktop. another tip is get Mac Fan Control, these do get a little toasty., and pass on the 8 core upgrade that chip is way over priced, you can get the 10 core for like 15 bucks and even the 12 cores are on avg cheaper.

By spraying some Caig De-Oxit on the HDMI port and a cable, then exercising them, you may be able to revive it? Always worth a shot, right? Nice vid!

I love my Trash Can = 12 core 24 thread, 64gig ram 1tb ssd and dual D700 gpus - cost $650 in the UK.... I have the M2 Pro Mac Mini and its faster (obviously) But the Trash Can is so much fun and easier to clean when needed.....

That's also an anti-static gasket that's secured to the metal shell housing. It's come undone and stuck to the CPU. You have to be careful when you take the case off of it. you might have done it yourself it you popped the case off and put it back on a couple times.

The only downside with this macpro today is that it’s limited to only the Thunderbolt Display. Any other display through HDMi is a stutter

Nope. You can use a Thunderbolt to MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Bit convoluted, but it works. I'm using that right now, on a 4K/60Hz display.

Suggestion... add 64GB RAM with 4 memory cards (don't do it with the 2 cards because they are slower) and that also should improve the performance when rendering, also take appart the video cards and replace the thermal paste with new one on each GPU, they get really hot and they tend to burn down internally during heavy renderings
@mancavemedia
@mancavemedia 5 ай бұрын
I ordered a 64GB kit a few days ago, should be here soon. The thermals on the GPU's looked good when I tested so I decided to leave them be, but it is a good idea to re paste them.

We bought 2 mid 21 for 2 post locations from OWC. They had replaced the OEM hard drive part of the issue. Because of this we seem to be stuck with Big Sur even though it can (and the computer keeps recommending) be upgraded. After spinning my wheels with all the idea of how to force a firmware update,which seems to be the issue. No matter what I've done I can't get it updated. Our IT doesn't like the age of the OS because of security either. It's been very frustrating. I reached out to OCW to see if they could help.

New to the "classic mac" scene; I am intrigued by any device I can still tweek after purchase. Just curious, all things being equal, if you see multiple MacPros on sale would you spend spend extra $ on more RAM or more cores?
@mancavemedia
@mancavemedia 3 ай бұрын
Depends on your comfort level with taking things apart? Upgrading the RAM is a 2 minute job and requires no tools. The CPU on the other hand, it's a complete tear down and rebuild. So if you're not comfortable with taking things apart, you should spend more and the the CPU you want already installed. I would not pay extra for RAM, you can get that cheap and it's a slam dunk install.

No, that's the dust that comes out of it. Nothing you saw was wrong. MofAT, they didn't clean it, but the dust balls like you saw them, it's usually if you don't blow it out every couple months. Take the lid off, take it outside every month or two, use a can of air on it, it's fine. It's also fun to watch the dust fly all over....lol

GREAT video... I wonder what CPU model is that because as far as I know the 12 core XEON for the Mac Pro 2013 has trade off with the clock speed which is like 2.7 Ghz but with the advantage of having 12 core for apps like Premier, Davinci Resolve and others, so I'm surprised that the one you installed is 3.7 Ghz, can you share the link where you bought it please?
@mancavemedia
@mancavemedia 5 ай бұрын
You're correct, it is 2.7 Ghz. Did I miss a spot in the video where I misspoke about the clock speed? My apologies if I did.

Great video, just got a MacPro 6.1 myself a couple of weeks ago. Also a 6 core Xeon Dual Core D500, but with 64gb RAM and a 480gb SSD. Was thinking about Was thinking about upgrading the CPU to an 8 or 10 core for the giggles but not sure I realy need it for number crunching back testing jobs. Do need to upgrade the SSD though to 2TB as currently it is too small for what I need - if anyone has suggestions as to best 2TB option let me know. Has anyone got a Gen 4 blade to work without hiccups or stuck with Gen 3 nvmes? Would be interested to hear any suggestions. Cheers guys

Take Transcend MTE250S 2TB or even 4TB. They work like a charm (much faster than original). You have to use the adapter though. In Switzerland the 2TB model is around $ 190 whereas the 4 TB is around $ 340. There is also a model with heatsink (MTE250H) for a few $ more.
