Thank goodness for some sanity on this subject! I saw the title and kind of got a nauseous feeling in my stomach, because the law of attraction and the prosperity gospel type things normally mean blaming the poor for being poor, the sick for being sick, etc. It's so great to get some truth about the subject out there!

Leigh Nichols, I am like you. Lost mom and that was devastating 8 years ago but lost my husband January, 2015 which has pushed me to the edge. I've never missed someone so much in all my life, horrific. I was searching for meditation things on you tube and just happened across this, have been forever greatful. It hasn't been a cure all but has given me enough to not completely give up and I can at least start the day with I think I can. Never so lost but do look forward to seeing him again.

We're so glad you found something that provides meaning to you through this challenging time. Before I read Swedenborg I couldn't even see my affections love of self, the Lord, etc.and Swedenborg brought these concepts to light within me. Mr. Rose knocks that concept out of the park. Truly a gifted speaker in Swedenborgian terms. The complexity of love is hidden from most people who are not instructed, educated about love, affection etc. As Swedenborg says " truth and thought are manifest but the affections are harder to see". Deep stuff, great job.

Good discussion on this. No mystical topic can make me as irritated as the Law of Attraction, which videos like “The Secret” would have people believe is like a genie that can grant any wish as long as you focus your intent properly and with gratitude. The New Age tendency to over simplify mysticism and magic into intent alone is at its most extreme and vulgar in the Law of Attraction as those people believe in it. Intent is only one part of proper magic use. The other parts are complex, arcane, and therefore difficult to understand but once understood are very profound in how ones understanding of the cosmos and other planes of existence start to fit together like a puzzle. They used to teach these things as “natural philosophy” in ancient and renaissance universities. But it takes time to learn and those who find it too difficult or too different from what they have been exposed to before and don’t gain an understanding of it will dismiss it as mumbo jumbo, just like a cave man would dismiss chemistry in the same way.
@offTheLeftEye6 жыл бұрын
Yes, well said. There is much more going on in all that happens than one's own wishes. There is a whole network of activity, every bit as complex (and more so) as the millions of chemical reactions going on in the human body all the time!

I am in my 60’s and have had a chronic progressive disorder that causes pain anxiety and depression since I was in high school. I searched for a cure always. New age “truths” and some Christian people make me feel that if I just had enough faith or the right attitudes and beliefs and positive thoughts, I would get better. It’s my faults I suffer so much. I guess the truth is I am just a supposed to suffer to learn compassion. It’s all so confusing. But I want to thank you so much for your shoes. I spend a lot of time listening to them to help me have faith in the goodness of God and Spirit. I feel like a spiritual failure sometimes because I feel like I have so little to give right now but I hope prayer and love for animals counts.
@offTheLeftEye5 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry for this suffering you are going through, Pamela. My heart goes out to you. The suffering comes from the general influence of hell into this world, which is where all disease and suffering comes from. We are all vulnerable to it in one way or another. Your illness had not happened SO that you will learn compassion, but that is something that God can bring out of it. Please do not feel like a failure. All of us can do more external giving at some stages of our lives, but at other stages we serve by allowing ourselves to be helped by others. And you are having more effects than you realize, all the time, simply by being someone who cares about goodness and truth. Prayer and any kind of genuine love always helps! Good spiritual vibrations through prayer and love do affect the world. Wishing you healing and peace! God bless.

I've listened to this video several times and keep thinking about one thing.... people who are Narcissistic. My mother and brother in-law are Narcissistic. When my husband passed away, they hurt me more than they helped (supported) me; by things that they said and did. They could not understand the pain that I was in. They could only think about themselves. Because of that, I've had to distance myself from them. I did not want anymore pain in my life than what I was already experiencing. I do pray for them to have more love and God in their hearts. Thank you for this video!

Hi Terri, if you are still reading replies to your comment, I have had hordes of narcissists around me from childhood that somehow by the law of attraction led me to other destructive narcs. They are truly poisoned individuals who poison others so about the only thing you can do to protect yourself is get away from them. I picked up so many bad habits from my narcissist mother that had to be eradicated once they were identified. It's possible that these habits magnetized me to other narcissists.

I want to thank you very much for your work on this topic and many others. I have been on a long spiritual journey that has encompassed both traditional Christian doctrine as well as New Age philosophy. It has been your exploration of Swedenborg that has put the final and perhaps most crucial pieces together for me. You have put it very fairly and with great respect to those who follow the Law of Attraction but I will say that for me, my belief in it caused me a a lot of spiritual harm. I was seeing myself and my desires as the most important thing and that brings a lot of suffering because, as you brilliantly illustrate here, it takes us further away from heaven. Now that I understand that my true purpose on Earth is to serve God and heaven, I have so much interior peace and acceptance of whatever happens in life. I want to thank you all very much for that gift.

I knew of some people growing up who were the same age as myself, but were basically following that road of evil. Unfortunately, because I never had a proper upbringing, I didn’t know any difference until I faced the consequences for my actions. I wished I would have known better.......But Swedenborg seems to say this is a learning process. As long as our hearts are in the right place, it isn’t held against us. That gives me some hope ❤️❤️😃😃👍🏻

Absolutely true, Julian. We aren't held responsible for things we've done without a rational and conscious mind weighing in. I know a couple of very good and giving people, they help everyone they can and go out of their way to do so. They also give so much even as a surprise to myself and my spouse that we felt obligated and uncomfortable. We visited them and God Bless them yet at the same time we were drained so much so listening to their giving stories that all turned out negative; they were taken advantage of almost everytime. I mean from theft to unkindness and betrayel. We actually shortened our stay and my husband became ill because he was so drained his immune system lowered just by this visit, the stories went on and on. I could not really understand how their giving and kindness would attract such negativity. I think I am starting to understand why, I think? You all have taught me so much. Thank you again.
@offTheLeftEye7 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you and your husband had to experience that! It really validates Swedenborg's theological promise that we can't know (or make judgment) on anyone's spiritual state, because those interior motives lay hidden beneath seemingly good or bad actions. Thanks for reaching out, friend :)

my Scottish grandmother always said it wasn't charity if you told people about your giving..... charity should be anonymous. :)
@ArizonaWillful6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps the lesson for these giving people is to develop a spiritual discernment. These people possibly have made a strong ego bastion out of their giving. If they feel the need to tell everyone of their charity and their victimhood, then I feel they have made an ego identity out of this, a sense of saintly martyrdom. There should be no need for a spiritually balanced person to dump their negative experiences on others to elicit sympathy. They may be totally clueless about what they are doing (the games they are playing may be unconscious). But you can't really get through to them. If you tried, they would simply add you to the list of people who mistreated them. Leaving them was wise.

It’s actually pretty simple, what You believe, is what you manifest, so if you believe life is a drag, then that is what it becomes, but if believe life is great, then that is what it becomes. I have manifested tons of stuff, through believe. So it’s less of wishing, and more of believing/knowing that things will happen. What You think, is what You get. So it’s basically all about mindset.
@offTheLeftEye5 жыл бұрын
Mindset certainly plays a pivotal role in the experience we have. Swedenborg observed that it’s important to discern the source of thoughts inflowing into our mind -- they have a source in either heaven or hell. We cover this here, if you’re interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5O5ipKgor-bpck

The law of attraction is good if it encourages a person to think more positively but probably not if it drives you into denial because some realities need to be acknowledged to be healed. I think the law of attraction is true in the spirit world but here on earth things operate differently.
@offTheLeftEye4 жыл бұрын
There do seem to be different dynamics at play in the spiritual world as compared to the physical world. Still, if we can try to turn away from unkindness and prejudice and lying and cheating and stealing... and try to live a life of love for God and other people, that will put us in the company of angels and hopefully create a little pool of love and goodwill around us. And that makes a difference in the world, that can be felt and responded to, and could potentially invite similar atmospheres from other people. Do you think?
@TerryB7517 жыл бұрын
The thing with the law of attraction is that people have more of a chance for a positive outcome if they ask for the ability to make positive changes in their lives rather than asking for a new car or a million bucks and expect a "genie" to make it appear. It needs to be done by asking in a change in personal attitude toward some goal so you can make your new attitude create a physical outcome. For example, if a better life is needed, you can ask for the ability and means to get a loan to attend a small college or trade school to enable yourself to learn a trade to bring in more money in your life. You have to put in some effort to make this work for yourself.

Well said, Terry. I appreciate your emphasis on a more mature and long-term strategy for living a better life. Intentions are very powerful and we must discern them with care!

Am I the only grateful listener who is totally distracted by the particular guitar pattern played behind Dr. Rose’s, always enlightening comments? His summary at about 5-8 “ into this program on Law of Attraction is so very helpful, as are all his (as well as Curtis’ ) comments. It takes concentration to listen to his words, grasp the meaning. The repeated pattern in this particular guitar piece, with emphasis on every 5th note, functions as a hammer to beat out the words from Dr. Rose or Curtis. There are less obtrusive, more gentle guitar melodies. Any suggestions to help me overcome this would be appreciated, assuming I am the only one experiencing this distress.

Great question! The answer is: heavenly knowledge. They want to give and share concepts of knowledge, intelligence, and wisdom, about how to lead a heavenly life, how to love God and the neighbor, how to understand God's providence, etc. The more knowledge they willingly share with others, the more wisdom flows into them from God. In the spiritual realm, knowledge can also manifest in symbolic objects and scenery around the angels, but it is the things of wisdom that they value, and want to give and share and receive.

Having negative thoughts is normal for a human. You must never repress them into your subconscious where they fester and gain power. So what if you have a negative thought! Just let it flow through you and go its way. Your job as a mature adult is to observe the thoughts that come through you and choose wisely which ones you want to emphasize or let go. Never deny negative thoughts because they are there and they are normal and will build up inside you (What Jung calls the SHADOW) if not acknowledged. Simply give them no power and let them go. It is that simple. Do not fear negative thoughts.

Regarding the delight some of these spiritual communities had that came at the expense of others, I can think of an example that is very much down to earth. When someone or a group makes fun of someone else, it is literally at their expense. Often people who engage in this type of japery have no intention to do harm, but they do harm none the less. You'll hear them say things like, "Oh, don't be like that! Don't be so sensitive!" They see their jokes as being good-natured ribbing even though they actually wound the object of their joking. You could say that "mutual love" in this case would equate to "mutual respect," which is so obviously lacking when a person is singled out to be the butt of a joke. They don't see the harm they do because that is the nature of bias, it is a blind spot. Biases can only be detected in ourselves when our actions have incongruous effects. If this poor butt of a joke in my example, for instance, speaks out and says something like, "You know, I know you don't intend to make me feel bad, but what you just said hurt my feelings and it makes me feel like you are singling me out and excluding me," then there is an opportunity to correct that bias. But it is up to that individual or group to accept the reality of what is told them, or to reject it as that person "being too sensitive," or some other such justification. And make no mistake, it is shame that fuels the rejection of the correction of bias. But what would happen if that other person or group acknowledge the sin against the butt of their jokes and regretted it? "Oh, man, I'm so sorry. You're right, I shouldn't have made fun of you. It was cruel of me. Will you forgive me?" Then you have repair, mutual respect, mutual love that is strengthened. These are all tests of our character, our maturity, and our development.
@offTheLeftEye7 жыл бұрын
Really well said. We can indeed really see this dynamic happening on the earthly level, too. Yeah, mutual love and mutual respect really have to go together!

Hi, I have a question... do you no longer do "live" broadcasts? It seems you were answering questions live in previous episodes. If you are not, how do I submit questions, and when will they be answered :-) About this episode... at the height of my "Law of Attraction" days (after the movie came out) I discovered the difference between getting what I "think" I want, and what my Heart truly desires. If I got the things I wanted only for my self, it was accompanied by feelings of emptiness and fear of loss. When I got things my Heart truly desired, there was a feeling of inner peace and well being. I also noticed that Law of Attraction teachers who made lots of money or attracted their "soul mate", were soon in bankruptcy or lawsuits, and divorced. On the other hand, if we know how to tap into Divine Providence and bring our own desires into alignment with that, then the Law of Attraction is "automatic" and can lead to spiritual growth and awareness

I've found that the law of attraction seems to work for me, at least in general. I've seen very unlikely things happen by focusing on them in a manifesting sense and setting intent. Stuff like finding money on the ground or making a lot of money very easily following very specific criteria I was using, or manifesting very specific things very quickly. Stuff that is straight up objectively unlikely. I think that this world is in many ways a shadow or echo of the spiritual world, so spiritual actions echoes here. I don't think it's 1:1, but I think the power of the LoA is probably more than a lot of people realize. It isn't everything, but...it can be a lot, especially if you have a life which is spiritually clear and open and you face few blocks to your mental and physical life which causes the spiritual to flow into your manifested physical life more easily. EDIT: It's also worth noting that I have also used this to dramatically improve my relationships and to bring about increased wisdom or joy, and to cultivate better circumstances for others. At times, I have written lists of names of everyone I can think of to manifest the blessings of joy, security, guidance, peace, and protection to them. It's almost like prayer, but with a bit less emphasis on conversation and more on pure intent.

He (Quimby) did not cure Mary Baker Eddy. She had interest and some relief for a time, but ultimately rejected his theories as clearly stated in her Seminal work Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Read chapter entitled "Animal Magnetism". I enjoy your channel and have read her book. I do not feel the church would appreciate inaccurate statements made about their founder. Much like I try to give accurate information about Swedenborg that I learn from his writings and your channel. PS. This episode was most excellent... as are most of them!
@offTheLeftEye7 жыл бұрын
Hi Corinne! Thanks for your comment. “Cured” is a misleading word to have used. In the script for this history piece, we actually have the word in quotation marks! We don’t know if Evans or Eddy were technically cured by Quimby’s treatments, but they both were patients of Quimby’s and embraced his method--although as you say, Eddy later rejected his influence on her ideas. Although she later discredits Quimby in her writings, there is historical record of her initial esteem of him, which implies the positive impact of his approach on her. Our main source for historical information about the New Thought movement for this show is a book by John S. Haller, Jr., a professor of history and medical humanities, titled “The History of New Thought.” For context, here is an excerpt from his section on Mary Baker Eddy: “Between 1862 and 1865, she paid high tribute to Quimby’s reformed magnetic medicine in letters to the press and in her own private correspondence, soliciting his help on numerous occasions, defending him from charges of spiritism, and carefully explaining his ‘Spiritual Science’ using the scriptural teachings of the New Testament. Eddy even composed poetry in his honor, including a poem prepared for the local newspaper upon Quimby’s death. From a historical point of view, it is important to recognize these early efforts by Eddy to spread and defend Quimby’s healing practices” (p 80). So, that's where we got our information from, and again, thank you so much for adding your thoughts here in the name of clarity and accuracy, and for your kind words about our show!
@pc64277 жыл бұрын
offTheLeftEye and thank you! Your information is accurate in its historical account. I am deeply appreciative of these amazing spiritual seekers like Eddy and Swedenborg. Eddy was very open and honest about her path, and how she found her way to higher and higher revelations of Truth as they unfolded in her experience. We often move on from certain teachers or modes of thought in our progression spiritually, but this does not mean we don't acknowledge them as important steps on our path. I feel Eddy did this with Quimby (and many others), as did Swedenborg. What is to be highly esteemed is the extreme " going against the tide" these type of individuals endured. I can only hope to follow such examples. Thank you again for your work in helping to leaven the thought of humanity in order that it may receive higher and higher manifestations of Life, Truth and Love.❤️🙏

If we have everything we want we have nothing left to strive toward. I feel people must be careful because the love of money can be evil if they start treating others badly because they believe they are better than everyone else, the 7 deadly sins are real. If man can learn to live with what they have and build upon that they will grow in a good way.

I do agree that using money or status to impose superiority over others is an evil desire. Striving to live a deeply fulfilling spiritual life can be developed into eternity. Great show! you are clothing and feeding my soul, thank you. I have a question off topic regarding Jesus Christ and the Father being one, does it mean that when Jesus was in the womb He was directing Divine Providence from there or was He absent from the universe? what about when He was a child and didn't know He was God and was just playing as a kid?
@offTheLeftEye7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! We're so glad that the shows are touching your heart. It's hard to wrap our heads around, but I'll try to share some thoughts about how I understand it. Swedenborg learned that the physical manifestation of Jesus was actually adding on a new level to the way God could interact with the created universe and humanity. The Divine Soul (Father) was implanted into Mary's womb as "seed" that started the growth of a physical body. With that body grew a lower mind, like we all start out with. While the Father, the Divine Soul (Essence) of God was still directing and taking care of the universe, the lower mind of Jesus was at first not aware of his Divine Soul. This might seem strange, but each of us also actually has a "higher self" level that we are unaware of unless we spiritually evolve and open up to it. So, Jesus gradually opened up to awareness of his Divine Soul and his mission. The more aware he became and the more spiritual trials he went through, the more connected he became with his Divine Soul. That is why sometimes Jesus felt separate from his Divine awareness and felt despair or confusion, while at other times he felt opened up to that Divine awareness and felt "united to the Father." That is, at those times he experienced full clarity of his mission and the Divine perspective. We, too, fluctuate during our lives between being stuck in a lower perspective, and opened up to a higher perspective. And there is a process in which we can become more and more connected with our "true self," our purpose, rather than all the lower-level issues of life. The difference is, when Jesus was opened up to higher perspective, that perspective was the Divine Omniscience. After Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected, his process was complete, and he was fully united to the Father. That means, his lower human level was now completely Divine and One with his Divine Soul. But now the Divine Soul could reach us even in the lowest levels of physical existence by being present as Jesus Christ (who had experienced all the earthly struggles we deal with) to help us get out of entanglement with self-centeredness and materialism. So, God was always there, taking care of all things with Providence, even while this new lower level of the Divine was being formed and purified.
