@@darrellhart8129 that's not family at all. family is who you love, it's got nothing to do with blood. An old guy who isn't related to me in anyway was more my father than the sperm donor that calls himself that when it's convenient. That's why I have two brothers that aren't even the same race as each other let alone me. We write and call regularly. THAT is family. A guy that was responsible for 3 minutes of effort or like in my case 15 years of abuse, has nothing to do with that.

The 2 classmates each invested and started small businesses. The last one was a retired executive who created a charity that has done numerous community improvement projects and is greatly admired by his hometown. So yes, people can get screwed by winning. Same here. I'm not buying the ticket because I actually think I might win ('cause that would be stupid...), but because I like to daydream about all the wonderful things I could do. That's why I never buy unless the prize is at least $150 million. (Yes, it's possible to daydream about what to do if I won less than that, but those fantasies aren't worth the price of the ticket.) I also never, *ever* by more than one ticket per drawing. 'Cause I'm just buying a daydream, and I can do that just fine on a single ticket. Purchasing a lottery ticket is absurd, but sometimes absurdity (within very strict limits) can be fun. :)

Isn't it mostly down to the people winning, not being accustomed to the life that comes with being rich? A lot of the time if you've built a mini empire or inherited it, you'll be careful and will know how to spend, save, and invest; or will have trusted accountants. The rich probably already keep the kind of company that won't try and milk them, and will have that safe guard. I think the biggest problem with lottery winners is the lack of education on how to handle ones own finances, and use restraint/discipline. Edit: This is a prime example on why you shouldn't comment before the video is over.

Financial education isn't taught in schools because it's always been assumed that parents teach their children those skills (even if they don't in reality) and my cynical view is that our capitalist overlords don't want us filthy consumers learning how not to spend so much. They don't make near enough money that way.
@xxxdroidmonkeyxxx

@@denniss3980 The reason why public schools and even colleges to an extent don't teach about personal finance is that most people who understood risk/reward principles, they'd most likely not go to college. Most kids who go to college don't go into fields that yield a financial return they put into it. Recent statistics show that college education has skyrocketed in price and more than 50% of students are underemployed. If you went to a financial expert and asked them if you should make a $35-100k investment on something that'll only have a 50% or less chance of giving you a return that you wouldn't otherwise get without the investment with money you don't have, they would tell you, you're crazy for even considering it. @@matthewrawls1184 Your point makes no sense whatsoever. What does capitalism have to do with not wanting people to have money? You do realize that capitalism doesn't work if the masses don't have disposable income, right? It's why companies hate recessions. Mr. John Doe is far less likely to buy a new shiny smartphone or TV or even a vacation if most of his paycheck is tied up with bills and rent. Furthermore, "those evil capitalists" have more to gain if a country is wealthier because the power of the currency increases, thus giving every dollar a company earns from people more buying power on a global level (trade power). Why is it that people who are clueless of economics always seem to rag on the very economical system that allowed them to live the privileged first-world life they always take for granted?

I lived in a smallish town for awhile where someone won the lottery. It was known the person bought their ticket at a certain store, but no one immediately came forth. Ads, and articles were run attempting to get the winner to come forth to no avail. Finally, as time was nearing for the claims window to close, an attorney came forward, claimed the winnings on behalf of an unnamed person, and that was that. I always thought that was smart, and you, sir, have confirmed my intuition.

Yea I buy a lottery ticket every once in a while. It is exciting to think that maybe you will win and that is the fun in it. A couple years ago I bought a ticket online (we can do that in Germany) and I won 10 Euros but the money goes into your online lotto account so I just kept buying 1 ticket a week with the money until it was gone. I kept winning a couple Euros here or there and ended up playing every week for close to a year all with the 2 Euro investment I made in the beginning. I consider that money well spent because of the excitement I got out of it. Plus I could call my gf every time I won a couple bucks and tell her I won the lottery :D

Some of the best advice you'll hear. Not telling a single soul who isn't an attorney/lawyer about your winnings is the best thing you can do. There's so many reasons why you don't tell anyone but the most important are because friends can and will become enemies, family will become leaches and you'll discover that you have 10 kids with 3 women you've never met. That and...debt collectors will try their best to fool you into thinking you owe them money when you don't or at the least owe more than you actually do simply because they know you have a lot more money now.
