Is the Lumix S5IIX Worth It? 3 Months Later

1. "Creative Combine" is the setting where you tell the camera to separate the settings for photo and video and there on everything is separate for both modes. Just change the photo icon to video for the modes which you want seperate. 2. SSD recording is not just for the external recording, but you can also record 6K open gate in 422/10 bit on SSD along with many other higher bit rate recordings including 12bit BRAW, probably in 4:4:4, though not sure (if blackmagic monitors used). So this camera gives everything except the full frame slow motion and poor rolling shutter performance in fast panning. I have been enjoying this camera since last 1 year. This camera has lots and lots of settings beyond one can imagine.

Does the camera have phase detect in the HD resolutions as well? I have heard it's switches back to contrast based af for HD resolution s & phase detect is only for the 4k modes. Can anyone confirm if it's been fixed with an update? As S9 seems to have phase detect in both resolutions

Yes and it works just like the a7iv but the best thing is that it saves the lut your working in video and use a different one in photo mode.

I sold my Canon R6 for an S5IIX. Although there are some drawbacks, I find that the Lumix has too many great features that I now can't live without. I love how amazing the videos look and how stabilized my footage is without a gimbal.

Try to disable audio over hdmi, that will help reduce the lag. But still there is some lag, but never bothered me though.

Note: You can hook the S5 IIX up via HDMI to a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G and get RAW sensor output up to 5.9 k/29.97 fps and record as 12 bit BRAW, elevates the video image quality to another level. This way you almost get a Blackmagic Cinema Camera BUT with usable AFC which the Blackmagic cameras unfortunately don’t have.

To switch quickly between photo and video mode I personally saved them to the custom dial slots for C1, C2, and C3. If you put the camera on video mode and put it at the base settings you want, you can then save it to a custom dial slot, and then i do the same for photo. That way if i want a dial to have a certain picture profile i save it to a custom slot, and note that c3 can have up to 10 custom settings files just for that one spot

Be sure to check your Custom settings and use the C1-5 on the dial. Make sure to overwrite the set to match the dial position. This is something that they introduced on the GH4 and it was so easy to switch quickly between photo modes and video modes.

The custom modes have worked super well for me as a 1-switch solution to switch from photo to video. I've got my v-log 24fps, 60fps, and 6k open gate in the 3 custom modes, and when I switch back to one of the photo modes that I've put in standard it snaps back instantly. It keeps the standard photo stuff as the base and the custom modes as the exception, and instantly switches to v-log in the custom modes.

You can also save your default settings for each of the dial modes...someone else mentioned "Creative Combine", which is part of it, but let's say I go to "M" for photos...once I have locked in my settings, I can save those settings, so every time I switch the camera to "M", it has those settings, I do the same thing for the video mode... now, when I want to take photos, I go to M, when I want to take video, I flip the dial one position, and I have my video settings. I set up my quick menu so I can switch between my aspect ratios and frame rates really quickly Lastly, you can use the C1, C2, C3 custom modes to set them up to be whatever you want... In any of these cases, I just turn the dial, and I am in the mode with the settings I want for the thing I am trying to do... I personally just use "M" for photos, and "Video" for video, each of them has the settings set up the way I like them, and in video mode, I just swap through different frame rates and aspect ratios as needed using the quick menu

if I wanted to rig it up with a cage and all that stuff, which I find totally unnecessary for a lot of stuff, I would use the BlackMagic Video Assist 12G HDR to record RAW externally. in fact, I didn't bother getting fast SD cards, because I will only use SSD or external recording for any of the really high bit rate stuff, I just use the SD cards for video and LongGOP stuff...and that works pretty well.

Yeah, you can setup your custom modes/settings on C1, C2, C3 on the mode dial and then you just turn it and you have your desired settings for V-Log, Luts, Photo etc.

If it works a similar way as A7 I don't like it because it changes all the settings. Lets say you want one for slomo and the other for normal, you set a white balance at the scene every time you switch to a custom mode it will reset you WB among anything else you did at the shoot.

@@petercofrancesco9812 No it will stay as you have set that on the Lumix. If you e.g.: Set a C1 mode on the dial to S&Q 120 fps FHD 422 with WB 4400K, ISO 400 it will not affect any of your other settings. When you are in simple Manual mode it will remain the same as you left previously, then you turn the dial to C1 and you have your settings that you have setup only for C1. You go to Menu - Photo Style - change all settings you wish - set to custom mode - choose C1-C2-C3 - done. Then you need to change all settings back to the original, but after that it won't affect anything anymore.

I encountered Moire couple of times in photos and in a very few video clips in last one year of usage. Initially I got worried but it didn't turn out bothersome. Its very very rare. Later I learnt that the issue is there with every camera with high resolution sensor. Thats the reason Sony is still using the 12MP sensor in most of their video cameras. Even few photos I clicked on my one decade old Nikon DSLR with 16MP Sony sensor also produced few rare images with moire where dense patterns were present. Only and only downside in S5IIX is no full frame slow-motion and poor rolling shutter during very fast panning, which again is the side effect of high resolution sensor.

Bro I had the moire completely ruin a corporate shoot. Like completely. None of the footage was usable. Business suits(MASSIVE MOIRE) and talking head were completely shot. I obviously have a bad taste in my mouth about it. I’m not saying never again but I will wait for the s1hii before trying lumix again

1. You have quick switch if you utilize Custom modes. Also if you are recording in similar enviroment often you can just save (or re-save) the ISO/S/A settings so you can just swap back and forth all day. I have C1 for photos (Neutral color, low ISO) C2 for standard videos (Vlog 4:2:2 10bit 24fps) and C3-1 for postproduction slow motion (Vlog 4:2:2 10bit 48fps). 2. The HDMI lag is super frustrating. Im doing automotive and if Im not in the trunk but on the seat I cant really see the action without the external monitor because the flip screen in the wind is just so annoying and small. Its ok as long as we are not recording some action like acceleration or fast pass by. I will try the HDMI audio warkaround though.

And eventually I plan on getting the Pyxis so my glass will be good for both systems

turn the top mode dial to photo click in personal settings.....turn dial to video dial in your setting ...Manual photo use and setup auto setting in either A S P that closely relates to usual M usage dial the M settings you usually use in the image settings. that nearly match your preferred M ..then fluff around with aperture and shutter speed while in M.. There isn't a full preset M ..it is what you last set when in M.. maybe thats why Fuji is popular.. its a ready and easy to use stills camera

C1,C2,C3-X is the way to go you need to save it and after you need to check if You want to save WB SS and other on recall...it is much faster and you dial directly the mode you want...

I don't know, you speak so much about value meaning that it is a nice camera for beginners or people who don't earn money with video and then you keep telling how good it is with anamorphic lenses and somebody goes to look up a set of anamorphs and it's 10K or just a little bit less. I kinda think that anamorphic lenses is still a rather niche thing and most people just don't use them (especially how very few autofocus anamorphs out there, and AF is usually crucial for "one man band" creators)
