Tony, I too am a former IT professional, having been a systems engineer for 45 years. And I am concerned about the prospect of merging camera and smartphone technology. You were outraged when Adobe announced that it was going to police the photos you store in their cloud , looking for illegal activity. Yet you eagerly awiait the Android OS on your camera. Android is owned by Google. Google, who voraciously squirrels away as much customer data that they can, to sell to data brokers. They certainly will have location services, so they can include that in the exif data. Those same location services will then be able to keep track of every place you take your camera and whether or not you took a photo or more while you were there. And, there is certainly many other bits of data that the android system would be able to Glean and report to the Google cloud. I’ve spent most of my life working on computers and the last thing that I need is a camera that works like a computer. I want a camera that works like a camera.

I'm a simple man - all I want is Arca Swiss compatible feet on ALL newly announced big lenses - especially primes! It's not much to ask, but some of us have been asking for decades. As far as I can tell, only the Olympus 150-400 f4.5 offers this - and it's not a particularly "big" lens, nor is it a prime. I know it's a niche request, but it's also simple and much needed.
@brucefogwell58282 күн бұрын
When are you going to focus on the need for camera companies to include built-in GPS systems in their mirrorless full frame cameras. Yes the Nikon Z9 has it, but that is an exception. Having a camera that supposedly can support GPS by using an add-on piece of hardware is not a good substitute because that type of connection is often problematic, e.g., it does not work well, the connection to the camera breaks easily, etc.. Anyone who travels or takes wildlife shots wants to know when and where a photo is taken and not have to deal with the extra hassle of somehow connecting the camera to some external GPS locater with all of its problems. Yes such an addition may add a bit of extra cost, but nowadays camera companies are adding capabilities to cameras which also cost money to add but will never be used as frequently as BUILT-IN GPS.

Tony is right to keep predicting/hoping for an Android-based camera. I think Zeiss talked about one but it was EXTORTIONATELY expensive and never happened. Regardless, it's the logical direction of things especially when ALL photographers start on a smartphone nowadays, and use apps... Not endless clunky menus and loads of buttons. Cameras are stuck in the past tech-wise, from the perspective of a young person. Sony could do an Alpha/Xperia collab tomorrow, maybe a new RX1 with a big rear screen, built-in editing apps e.g. Lightroom Mobile, full frame sensor and fixed lens. It would sell absolutely bucket loads but they're dragging their feet. Anyway, I'm with you Tony. It might only be me and you... But I'm with you. One day we'll see our Android camera body, hopefully before we die but it's looking 50/50.

He is brilliant & thoughtful but as a born-digital he kept asking how he could transfer his epic shots of hawks & birds to his phone. With great sorrow I explained the 19th century workflow & told him about you guys & how you keep telling companies to work this out. TL;DR: While apologizing profusely for this sad user interface failure it hit me that born-digitals are not asking for anything more than a workflow that meets the requirements for their baseline reality. It is that profound. This kid is not spoiled & the kids in his school have started an actual camera club. (not like retro expensive film, that's for undergrads maybe). There could be a renaissance of point & shoots if the CEOs would listen to kids who are being held back w/this in a wretched way. You guys helped me see this & recognize the significance of my nephew's user experience. Btw getting him your book. Happy New Year guys! Pls keep making the best content ever.

However, built in GPS of my Pentax K-1 is very convenient for uploading to a nature data base such as obsidentify, and not having to mess around each time with my phone for recording the location. Without location data such reporting is not accepted. If privacy is an issue, it is easy to select in Lightroom removal of location data in converting RAW files.

I personally would like to see a Sony A7M5 with a stacked BSI 40 to 45mp sensor, 15fps mechanical, the A7RV's screen, AI autofocus chip, a very high definiton and very very fast EVF... 4K video up to 120 without crop and an effective IBIS... Which would be the perfect do it all camera for most people, specially with the hundreds of amazing lenses available for the system !
@BryceShamwow3 күн бұрын
Wouldn't that just be the A1 mark 2? Seems like they should try to match the Z8 for that one. Sensor from the A1, no mechanical shutter at all, same EVF, flippy screen from the A7R5 since everyone likes it, body from the A9M3 since everyone likes that. They should be able to do that and match the price of the Z8.
@pentagramyt4173 күн бұрын
Ok, now delete from that things: Stacked sensor, 4K120k without crop (probably won't be at all, maybe just 4k60 without crop), IBIS max 6.5 stops, no fully articulated screen as in A7RV/A1M2/A9M3. What will be: BSI CMOS, or Partialy Stacked sensor, ~15fps, AI chip, maybe pre-capture. Nothing else. It will be 1k$ more expensive than A7IV, around the same price as A7R5. That are my predictions.
@BryceShamwow3 күн бұрын
@@pentagramyt417 The thing is, the flippy screen is something that doesn't add much cost and people like it, and the Z8 is a big competitor. And if it doesn't have a stacked sensor, it can't compete with that camera. A lot of people are waiting to see if Sony is going to give their customers something good that acknowledges that the competition is beating them, and if they don't, a whole lot of their customers are just going to get a Z8 and leave the Sony ecosystem for good.
@BryceShamwow3 күн бұрын
@@pentagramyt417 That won't compete with the Z8. The problem is that that's what Sony needs to match at this point. It's FAR cheaper than the A1 and close to its capabilities in many ways: precapture, low rolling shutter video, 8K video, stacked sensor. If they release an A7V that has the specs you mention, it won't be worth buying. Lots of Sony owners will switch to Nikon in that case. I might even do so.
@pentagramyt4172 күн бұрын
@@BryceShamwow But Z8 if flagship, A7 series are ENTRY levels cameras, these are waaaay behind A9 with autofocus, and other features that are put at first place to A1/A9. Sony has A1 marked as a flagship, at second place is A9 series. You might see evolution in A7-IV but as I said, A7 is just hybrid camera, for something like pro-hobbysts. A7-5 will be the level of Z6III or R5II

Canon won't release an APS/c with a sensor to deal with rolling shutter. They only put out APS/c cameras because there's a market for them and other companies would get the sales if they don't. But they don't see them as serious photographers otherwise there would be serious APS/c lenses. Show me an L series APS/c lens, or full water proof one and I will start to believe it's possible.
@truckerzachbell2 күн бұрын
@@trevorsneath4665 so you don't think there will be an R7 Mark II with a global shutter? Just remember both Canon and Olympus put a so-called "digital teleconverter" (1.6x Crop Mode as Canon calls it) right into their bodies... And this is especially useful on the full frame R system models. So a full frame body like an R8 can function like an APS-C camera in situations where you need a little more perceived reach, but not a bunch. Now I would like to see some more APS-C lenses. A weather sealed RF-S 18-200 superzoom and a couple of series L RF-S lenses would greatly enhance Canon's line. These would go great with an R7 Mark II.
@trevorsneath46652 күн бұрын
@@truckerzachbellPutting an APS/c framing into full frame is just a bit of coding to turn off the take from some sensors around the sides of the sensor. They didn't 'put' anything in, they just removed some information. I think there'll be MkII's of the 7 and 10 because they are running out of single digits to use as names. I just don't think we'll see a stacked sensor in APS/c. I may be wrong and I'd be happy to be so, but Canon famously don't give us APS/c users anything like the quality of their L series lenses. If they had wanted to they could have done this with dslr cameras.

Had a proper gimbal and just wouldn't use it, because setting it up is really hard and once you do, changing lenses is brutal. It also limits creativity in some ways. I really would like to either see an updated DJI Osmo with an APS-C size sensor, an A7sIV with a super IBIS like never seen before or a seemingly impossible gimbal where you enter your hardware and it just works without much fidgeting.

Carnac the Magnificent for cameras. Love it.

I really do think that camera manufacturers have to come up with something really special to keep afloat. Phone cameras together with AI enhancements will be not distinguishable from professional grade cameras in short time.

Agree, want integrated GPS and authentication. Not sure why is it that complicated. Tons of users are asking for this.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the DJI mini and wanting a telephoto lens… I think you could potentially have an interchangeable gimbal assembly so you swap in and out without increasing the weight…

I've already invested quite heavily in my current camera body and lenses, and what I've got serves me well. I'm not interested in playing this "constantly updating" game. The only people who win that game are the camera- and lens-manufacturers.

I want a 100% studio camera. I want resolution, not super high iso, not super high FPS, no AI auto focus.

when will Fuji make a GFX AF that supports wildlife photography with their new 500mm lens?

You kind of dodged the Nikon predictions didn't you? Nikon's #1 task should be to drop the models with Expeed 6 CPU's and replace them with models featuring the Expeed 7, The Zf was a total mind blower when it hit the market, an economy priced model with an AF system as proficient as the Z9 and Z8. It also revealed just how inadequate the Expeed 6 is today. So there are 3 models in their lineup that need this upgrade. I expect the change to Expeed 7 for these models will happen quickly, because they are not selling as well as they once did. As for the Z6 II, I expect that production for that model will stop in 2025 and the inventory will get discounted deeply enough to sell out the full inventory.

Will we get a DX mirrorless version of Nikon D500, by any company, which will awe us just like D500 did back in 2016 ? With ergonomics, af tech and all the bells & whistles? And a few lenses to compliment such a DX body, say a 100-400 for wildlife.. Something which quite a few wildlife shooters want ? 🤔

Why would anyone want to shoot wildlife on APS-C?

I am hoping that Sony would release a 60 megapixels on their Alpha 7V and able to shoot 4K at 60 frames per seconds without any cropping.

I think one of them will go after Hasselblad’s lower end medium format, but cheaper. I can dream.

I would be very interested in seeing what Apple can do with a Full Frame IOs camera. I would love to see Sony produce an APS-C stacked sensor for wildlife, more than 26 megapixel, but I don’t think it will happen. I think Canon will replace the R7 with a stacked sensor.

Still can’t beat Large format analogue photography.
