Easily. It’s all about headroom! A cranked low wattage amp will fart out and get mushy. In recordings, that’s fine for certain styles, but for live shows, usually it just sounds like a shaken can of farting bees. If anything I would agree with as far as amp/cab rigs these days, it’s the weight and size thing. I’m SO not dragging around a 412 anymore, not with how good slant 212s have become. They’re punching way above their weight class.

There has to be a line somewhere, and it can’t be right between making guitarists use fake gear versus not making drummers do it-neither can it move in the direction of taking drummers’ dignity away too. Speaking for myself, I was raised on the sound of 100 watt full stacks. True, there is a sound and image associated with them. Gigging bands had 1/2 stacks at clubs and full at larger venues and/or outdoor gigs. Fast forward to today, and mostly due to aging, I see and use 50 watt or smaller heads into 212 cabs and combos. A lot easier on the back and load/unloading at the end of the day. Still pushing the 50 watts as the 212 are more efficient and have more power handling drivers in them. I also played gigs were 5 watts thru a 212 was too loud. Today's players are choosing modulers that plug into the PA and doing more with a tablet or phone. Thanks for the vid.

From Leo: Sir, I think you are the first youtube channel that ever demonstrated a Marshall 1/2 stack clean. Well done. A closed back cabinet "thumps" differently than open backs. I really like a 2 x 12 cab. I also have a pair of oversize 1 x 12 cabinets. If I need a half stack, I set the 2 x 12 over both 1 x 12 cabs. 4 x 12 cabinets are too hard on what is left of my back.

there's nothing like actually feeling the notes hit your body as you play. taming a roaring stack is a skill in itself, one that players who haven't had the experience with can really struggle. i've seen guys that can play great at low volume just melt when on stage with a stack behind them. i can only imagine that nowadays it will be an even bigger number of players affected

Congrats on getting a Vintage Modern model. Not very common. I’d say a full stack is total overkill these days, but the Marshall half stack suffers from a perceptual bias. If you think about, let’s say for example, a JTM45 head and cab (or a 50 watt Vintage Modern) all you *really* have is a 40-ish watt, 4 speaker amp. Because of the name, people will look at a Marshall half stack and think “oh god, a giant, monstrously loud amp”, but if you were to walk in with a Super Reverb, or a Tweed Bassman, they’ll probably think nothing of it. Or another example would be the reaction you would get walking in with a Bluesbreaker combo vs a JTM45 stack, even though they are essentially the same amplifier inside.

I primarily use a 1984 JCM800 50w 2x12 combo for gigs. Because it's a combo, I usually don't get the negative reactions from the club owners or sound guys. That is until the sound check. It's extremely rare that I can turn it up to the point where it's actually starting to cook. It's very disappointing! It still sounds "OK" at really low volumes, but it is capable of so much more. By the way, I have no plans of selling it or trying to find a smaller amp to use for gigs. It's actually the "smallest" amp I have even though it probably weighs about 80lbs and is a big pain in the a$$ to carry around.

Thank you for the video, it's very true what you say and almost no one says it: these amps sound great at low volumes as well and they also record really well at bedroom levels. For some applications they even sound better at low levels. The modeling thing on the other hand has gotten ridiculous. Wasn't Kemper supposed to have nailed it exactly ten years or so ago? So, what exactly are they still improving? I'm not putting modeling down, you can get great sounds out of it but I don't think the new units sound so much "better" than the first line 6 pods. You could get great sounds out of those too! As far as live shows at small venues, relying on in ears, especially cheap ones combined with young, inexperienced users can really damage your ears, much more than an amp at moderate club levels. Modeling gear is great but it is marketed with the notion that real amps are obsolete which is not true at all. If you play in a wedding cover band, these pedals are great. If you play in a "real" band, you go to move some air!!

And for sure the bedroomplayers who think they know everything better... never did a live gig on a real stage. But the real experience of a 4x12 cannot be simulated. Period. Also great on low volume levels. I play a few different amps, practically and smaller, but the sound of my original '64 fender bandmaster head on my 4x12 marshall cab cannot be done otherwise. Amps are still the way to go IMHO. I use a Vox AC30 every Sunday I’m scheduled to play. At home, I have a DSL100H w/ a 2x12 cab and will use it in a service at some point. The cleans on it are great and you don’t have to run it too loud to sound good in the mix. I do have a Tonex as a backup, but it’s more of a plan b vs. this is what I want to use. It’s good, but doesn’t inspire in the same way a good tube amp does. If folks like the modelers, YDY, but tube amps are my go to and will be till I’m in a nursing home.

I think 2x12 and 1x12 cabs have become the new norm. Some people simply put like that 100 watt and above "kick", regardless of how loud or quiet you're playing. When I ordered my AN Overdrive Reverb/Phoenix Fury, I went for the 100 watt version and the 2x12 cab knowing very well it's far beyond overkill. However, after owning 100 watt tube amp half stacks, including Marshalls in the past, I missed the feel of a 100 watt tube amp. The smaller wattage stuff sounds great don't get me wrong, but there's just something sweet about a 100 watt tube amp.

I can remember being in a band with a guy who would only use 4x12s. He'd be standing next to it and have the treble really high, because all the high end beams past. When I sat down for a minute across from it (where the audience's heads would be), it was painfully trebly. You do have to be careful with the directional beaming of a 4x12. In a big theater where you're a bit further away from it and maybe with the angled top it'd be better, but in small rooms I think they can cause you problems.

They were/are releasing new music but when did the last HUGE rock band debut? I think the change in popular music has a lot to do with this. There really isn't a HUGE rock band at the moment that debuted after 2015 as far as I know. There are underground metal bands on the rise but even they're using digital amp modelers on stage for easier/faster stage changes. Big amplifiers & cabinets aren't dead.....yet. Rock music seems to be on a slow rise, so this might come back but only time will tell.

Jack, great reflection on the Marshall half stack. Now that I am in my early 60's and still playing hard rock, the half stack is just too much weight to take out to gig. Especially when companies like Friedman, Engl & Mesa Boogie can get you there with the tone at 20 watts of tube power with DI out and cab emulation into a PA system using a 15 to 25 lb head with or without a 1 x 12" cabinet. Personally, I am using either a Tone King Imperial mkII or the Engl Fireball SE 20 with a small pedalboard.

I've done a similar video almost to years ago in my channel (linked down below) and I stand by the points I made in it, and I stand by bringing my halfstack to every gig were I think it's not overkill. That's festivals and bigger venues. It might be bigger, but it has wheels. That also means I can put my plexi on top of the cab, with my attenuator on top of that, get it all hooked up and just roll it onto the stage. I've had the SV20 and it's great, but once I played the 50 and 100 watt plexis, it's just not the same. Also own the UAFX Lion that is great is well, but I like hearing an amp on stage behind me and with a rockband like mine I think people should see actual amps on stage. As long as my health allows it, I'll keep bringing it for as long as I can, because there's nothing like it. I'm almost 35 now, so I hope I can keep doing it for plenty of gigs to come 😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2apf5eQgaqkhrMsi=NnoJ7_pU1fRq49B0

Real tube amps will never die. I can't stand modellers, there's something artificial about it that harshes the vibe. Despite countless bands using full stacks as a backdrop, most of the time what they are actually using is a 50w head and a single bottom cab, perhaps 2 cabs if the stage/venue is very large.

Sounds amazing. No substitute for big tube amps - or any old tube amps, for that matter. But I've been saying for years that they are the Dodo birds of the amp world. Their obsolescence, except in a studio/home/collector environment, is inevitable.

i had an origen 20 stack. i loved the overdriven sound but marshall made a mistake. even at the low wattage mode ir was way too loud at home. it should have been a half watt or whatever. since i rarely could enjoy that vintage OD sound i got rid of it. what good is avinatge sounding marshall if u cant enjoy the OD? u can with a dsl but i wanted the powertube type distortion

I am not playing anyplace that requires you to plug into the board. Sound is still sound, you still need speakers and pluging in into a pa and use ears in is not the same and still need some speakers. Modelers still need speakers and they dont sound better than real amps and speakers. The places I know of locally allow bands to use real amps. I dont know what happened to people. Physics hasnt changed.

For gigs currently my pedalboard is rigged for either my 20 Watt 65 Amps Lil Whiskey Combo, or my 45 Watt 65 Amps Whiskey Head. With the head I have my choice of various cabinets. If I am either playing an outdoor gig, or a gig where someone requested to borrow a cabinet for their set, I will bring my 4x12, so I can be heard, if the PA is lacking, or I won't be worried by someone blowing my speakers if they happened to have a high wattage head.

Based upon the views of the control panel and upon my ears, I’m thinking you do NOT have the mid-boost function engaged in any of the playing samples. Am I right?

Fuuck no the age of half/full stack is not over, and never will be. I always hear (online) about people saying that everyone is downsizing, but when i play out, I dont see that. I mean, it depends on where you play at I guess. In a small bar where there ain't enough room for big stuff, ya i can see that, but people need to understand thier equipment and where it will fit at when playing out.

With modern PA and house equipment and modern pedals, A deluxe or JTM 45 combo is all you need

Live bands still use them around my area. I went to two Marshall 2 by twelve cabs with different speakers. I have several heads I use, last live performance I had an evh head Marshall 2x12. Huge sounding.

When you stand with your Les Paul 3 or 4 meters in front of a full stack on 10, you know its not obsolete.

I have too many cabs, because I tried to find a 2x12 „solution“. I play heavier Rock and I accepted, that I need bigger Iron (transformers) and bigger cabs. A 50 or 100 watt amp has a tighter Bass response & more headroom. At least that’s my experience. I play an Orange 412 and thats pretty much as heavy as it gets. But it’s the sound I love :)

Orange 412s look great on stage but I feel like they should come with their own Roboroadie.

I just watched a tour of the Marshall factory. They are still shipping a ton of 4x12's. They are iconic, collectors' items, if nothing else. What kind of guitar player wouldn't want a half stack in their home or studio? But playing out, no, they typically aren't needed anymore. I use two ENGL 2x12's at home, though I have a 4x12 from 1986. More speakers always sounds better, especially since you can mix and match speakers.

I'm a bass player. As a group, I think bassist have gone the D.I. route sooner than guitarist. I'm fine with my board and can cover a lot of ground with it. It's extremely convenient too! That said I'll always have a head and a 4x10 as long as I have space in my home.

I really like the fact that you talked about channel-switching amps. Can you talk about it in a guitar talk video please? Like, using a channel switching amp vs using an one channel amp with pedals

I'll never sell the 50watt EVH III or the Fender Supersonic 60watt. Both can be very loud, but pure tube tone. If I owned a Marshall JCM 800, I wouldn't sell that either. Sound men can get over themselves. I have heard NO modeler sounding better, ever!
@patrickkem6892 ай бұрын
An arena flavor, much more full of a tone with the 4X12 CAB always bigger sound,👍❤️ Try a 212 WITH THE 412 CAB AND ARRANGE IT IT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS FOR A MORE STEREO SOUND. I USED TO LOVE TO PUR THE 212 WITH OUR BASS PLAYER FOR A MONITOR AND ALWAYS LOVED IT!

When decided it was finally time to dip my toes into the digital modeling world, I didn’t have the cash so I was looking for someone to trade an FM9 for my Marshall half stack. I thought it was extremely unlikely that someone who crossed over into digital would have any interest in going ‘backwards’, but sure enough, I had a deal in less than a week. The half stack lives on!

I had a Highwatt half stack in the 80's now I have tinnitus and a sore shoulder. I'll stick with 25 watt or smaller combos. With the ear I got left.

I use the exact amp you have there as my home practice amp. Albeit with the original Vm cab with the G12-C Greenbacks. It is the best amp I have ever had In fact it may be the best guitar device I ever had It works at home, even without cranking, best tones ever had Will give my best shot at keeping forever

Not for me. I have four half stacks and one full stack (Marshall 1959x); 3 x Marshall 100W; 2 x Marshall 50W, and 1 x Marshall 40W; 1 x Fender 180W; 1 x Mesa 100W; 2 x Engl 100W. I also have a Helix Floor and Fractal FM9 Mk II Turbo. Marshall Studio series at 20W are toys IMO. But that's what buyers want these days. Not me. My DSL40CR is as low wattage as I'll go; it or my Origin 50C are my first choice gigging amps depending on how much gain I need. I like and use them all. If I can use a tube amp, it will always be my first choice, the bigger the better if I can use it fully which is very rare. Lucky for me I can crank my amps at home. No need for attenuators, just really good earplugs. cheers!

I have a Carvin Legacy A cabinet and a Peavey Penta 140 amplifier head on top of it with 3 Marshall circuits in it, jtm 45, Marshall super lead, and a modded George Lynch style Marshall. The 4x12 has 1970s Carvin magnalab square magnet speakers in it. The thump is incredible!!!

I have 20w 2204 clone on a VS quad. It sounds epic at very reasonable volume. It has that Marshall gristle, without insane loudness. Would love to try one of those studio vintage amps.

I've actively been trying to sell my JCM1960A 4x12 for over 2 years asking a market reasonable number and still sitting on it....I've carried it around enough since buying it new 25 years ago. Seems people don't really want them anymore. It does make me sad I can't really use it anymore those days are gone.

I love the sound of my Peavey Ultra 120 half stack, but it's not going anywhere unless I move and the moving company moves it for me. I'm just a hobby musician, so it fills a niche in my music room. Likewise I don't intend to lug my Pro Reverb 2x12 around if I don't have to. I have a Line 6 modeling 1x12 and/or a little Kustom Tube 12A to lug to any jam with friends etc.

I’m lugging out a 2x12 with a 50w head, but actually running it in a 10w mode. Just can’t play loud as I’d like.
