in what way is the ceramic stone be better/worse than the diamond stone? would the ceramic stone last longer due to pieces of diamond falling off the diamond stone over time?
@OUTDOORS55
@OUTDOORS55 4 жыл бұрын
They both have slightly different feels and grits. Both will work well for a one stone system. The diamond will be slightly more aggressive but will not last near as long as the ceramic. The ceramic is less aggressive and is slightly finer grit. If I had to start over with one id get the diamond stone.

I got one just like this for £15. It works great, I've sharpened 1095, d2, 30crv2 and some stainless blades. Although I use a diamond stone for reprofiling as it removes steel much faster. For general sharpening it is ideal, I tend to pull the blade rather than push so never accidentally bite into the stone.

Ok, that answers the question I posed in a comment on another of your videos. That's the same brand (but different grit) as what I have. I got a 400/1000 "Sharp Pebble" carborundum wet stone for $24 on Amazon in 2022. Came with rubber holder (no wood) and flattening stone. Works, but time-consuming and messy. I'm thinking of getting a Kuromaku K0207 (1000 grit). That's all I need for kitchen knives. I don't need to shave, much less split hairs, just cut meat & veggies.

Late to the party, but a small suggestion: For someone that is new to freehand sharpening, I would suggest the extra fine 1200 instead of the fine 600 as their first whetstone. The extra fine 1200 will slow things down. "Aim small, miss small." Things may take a little longer, but your "oopes" will take longer to make, too, and be smaller 😉 The 1200 grit is a very good "working edge", refined with a touch of tooth", that you can go straight to honing afterwards 👍

@thorvenalvarskjomisson95
@thorvenalvarskjomisson95 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nohkral Hey! They are working fine. At first, i had to learn how to use it. Dont get me wrong, all my knifes were sharp after the first try, but not like i wanted them to be. It is really important to hold it like you are supposed to do. I also used leather and a green compound in the end to polish it. I build that strap by myself, does also work fine. Now my knifes are, well, not like razorsharp, but they are extremely sharp and they hold their sharpness for like, 6 to 8 weeks, mostly i just strap them then. The stone itself did lose a lot of material, but that was kinda my fault, cuz i did hold it wrong and used to much pressure. I had at some point a hollow, but i grinded it even and now, sure, it still wears, but this thing will still stand a long time. Its important to clean it after using, soak it really good in the beginning and let it dry on the air. The stone itself, im satisified. My knifes, from cheap to expensive, are getting extremely sharp, like my bladesmith did it. But not razorsharp, but: i guess thats my fault, not the stones one. After all: i did never regret buying this and i would always recommend them. Its not expensive and it does a good job - but you have to learn it.

Oh, and about 2 years ago I bought the $40 Carson Chase kit of Amazon. Primarily to sharpen wood chisels and being such an amateur at the time (still am! lol) at first it liked to drive me nuts rounding out stones. I practically used the flattening stone up within hours and had to switch to flattening on cinder blocks. So I can totally vouch for not being user friendly to sharpen several chisels. Anyways I think they’re the same stones as in this video, look remarkably similar. I still have the kit and pulled it out to mess with it, but have been eyeballing the diamond stones but trying to get over the hump to spend the cash on them.

I can vouch for the look alike stone on Amazon (one of them at least). Works just fine. Comes with the same rubber base and useless angle guide. It will sharpen knives just fine. It is soft, but for as often as I sharpen my kitchen knives (every 2-3 months), that's just not an issue. This stone is a buy at the $20 I paid for it, but maybe not at $39. As always, sharpening your knives on a stone like this is still vastly superior to not sharpening them at all (which I shamefully did for far too long).

Great video. I own three of the cheap stones, 400/1000, 2000/6000 and 5000/10000. I can say they work flawlessly. They cut very fast which means you can use less pressure and they don't wear too quick even though they are softer. The grit rating is wrong on them though, and they contain little to no polishing agents. I'd estimate roughly half the rated grit. I ordered mine direct from china and paid only £7 (US$9) per stone. For that price these stones are very good value, but I also wouldn't recommend paying what you did for one.

Thank you a lot, for everything really. Trough this Video, that I've got randomly in my timeline for no good reason, I found out there are other options then water stones, that may be even more beginner friendly. And then I've watched a ton of your Videos. Because when I first tried sharpening, maybe two years ago, it was with propably the exact stone, only cheaper and after X tries, all I've managed to do was to make my knife more dull and scratch it up. Well, now I've a got a two sided Diamond stone with 300/1200, a leather strop and some old, free beaten up knifes (boning knifes from a butchery; those are being sharpened until there is to much metal removed to use them) to practice and not scratch up some good knifes. Of course, I can't sharpen my knifes not nearly as good as you can, I'm a bloody beginner, but I've defenetly had success and got a completely dull knife to an useable state. And since it costs here around 20 Bucks to get my knifes sharpened, that upfront cost of the stone and strop will be paid off in a year. Plus I can keep my knife reasonably sharp at all time.

Alex has some great tutorials on how to keep your blades at a 25 degree angle but if you’re still thinking that’s too hard, consider a Lansky fixed angle sharpening system. The diamond one is too expensive but if maintaining the proper dressing angle is the issue, this system takes all that fear out of sharpening your blades. Keep in mind that while it is a great system, there are a few flaws so check the reviews for any tips that may help if you plan on purchasing the Lansky system.

That diamond is now about 800 grit, but it still sharpens, I just need a new medium grit for fast removal. Brand new the old one was about $20, but a new one now for EZE-LAP quality is about $50, inflation. I make knives as a hobby and have since about 1992 or 93, I don't remember exactly. I also learned leather working at my local in OKC, OK Tandy leather store. I like doing leather I found, so I do more leather than knives now. Tandy still has free classes on weekends where I live now near El Paso, TX. Most all their stores still do according to my manager here. The bamboo base is good if you're just a kitchen user sharpening on a countertop. It raises the level of the stone and gives knuckle clearance. I use a stone holder, so to me it's just a storage place. I have used the stones, and for me, I like them a lot. They're easy to use. Background: I got into knife sharpening as a hobby, and I've blown probably $1,000 of knives and stones. I do have some expensive stones like the Chosera 3000 and the Suehiro 8000. The problem I ran into is that I'm not an expert sharpener, and right or wrong, I find the expensive stones somewhat hard to use. The Sharp Pebble stones are easy - it seems that way to me. Maybe it's because they're soaking stones, and the others are splash and go, so the "feedback" is better, somehow. My hobby collection is complete ($1,000 bucks!), and I'm using Sharp Pebble 3000 more than the Chosera 3000. A 3000 will get your kitchen knives p-l-e-n-t-y sharp enough. Be careful with sharp knives! They will cut without provocation, including your fingers! And be further warned, that with sharp knives you may want to upgrade your food supply and even do fancy stuff. My latest new stone is a Pride Abrasives combo stone, also a soaking stone. I'm finding that these well-selected less expensive stones are more fun. And I'm not sharpening 1000 knives, so a combo stone is thick enough. The Green Brick of Joy (2000 grit) gives a beautiful polish, but I keep saying to myself, "Man! This thing is hard to use! Your bevel angle has to be precise!" Maybe i"ll get good enough to understand it in months to come, but for now, I'm thinking I could have saved a lot of money with Sharp Pebble and/or Pride Abrasives. Btw, I soak in a small plastic tub with distilled water. A good quality knife is important, too, since a cheap one (supermarket from China) will lose the edge you put on it. Flatten one stone with another, and save the $140 bucks flattening plate for when you're a pro.

Love your videos you teach me so much snd wish I found them sooner.. so right with just spending the extra 10 and get a better longer lasting stone. Ive even bought like 5/10 packs of thin diamond "plates" for about 2 dollars a piece bulk and they last a good while from my experience.. usually feel 200 grit coarser than advertised but they have there place in my collection. Flattening, planer soles, trueing other stones or surfaces, metal work, machetes cheap knives people have and want to try a diamond stone. I get goos mileage out of them. But the dmt set last forever. Bought one like this a kota Japanese 3k 8k stone . Got it before I knew alot about what I was doing. I still have it and its 4 years old but gets a fraction of the use my others get.. Mostly because your gonna have a 3 foot puddle of slurry all over your counters and always applying water frequently, Works great love the tactile feel, puts a great edge on knives. Im rarely sharpening a knife where waiting up to 10 mins to soak is an issue. Great for razors and a few of my knives just seem to sharpen easier on it. Worth having one imonif you get it cheap

I have the 400/1000 & 3000/8000 stones. I found that the 400 side wore uneven very soon with a sharpening guide. Flattening needed to happen but was taking so much material away without sharpening anything for it. I know I would have been better off getting a 400/1000 diamond stone instead. That would last more than a few dozen uses. The 1000, 3000 & 8000 are wearing much more evenly though. 1000 is hollowing out but nowhere as fast as the 400. I also found I had to do a pull only pass to avoid chewing out the middle. Chisels & plane irons are a challenge too.

Thank you for this. I have an exact copy of this stone and yes I’m new to sharpening. However in sharpening my carving knife it already has noticeable wear. Guess I’ll go for the one you suggest. Thanks again

I store all my different wetstones in a kind of tupperware filled with water to the top and closed with a lid. I have from 480 up to 8000 grid 3 double sided stones and a smaller one with a complex shape to sharpen the different wood carving tools 😉

im tired of seeing that sharp/pebble stone every time i look on amazon for anything sharpening related, ill never be buying it. when i first saw it the price was alot lower, the more popular it got the price went up to what it is now. not really into the maintenance of water stones anyway, even though there are a ton of them that work very well. ill stick with my oil stones and diamond plates and ceramics. question: have you seen or tried the norton ascent ceramic stone? im just dying to see any review on them. cheers

Try dans whetsones pocket stones. I use them for everything and after you get the technique down, it’s far easier to just grab a couple of tiny stones and be able to sharpen small folding knives all the way up to axes and 5-6” fixed blades indoors or out without needing a table or anything. Just 2 hands.

Question. I'm a leather crafter my knives rarely ever get dull and I usually just strop them. What would be the best single stone for when the do need a little work. I would assume a really high grit since they never get dull persay but I don't know what I'm talking about.

Just got my stones, new to sharpening. I can never feel a burr on either side, I have been at it an hour on my 1000 grit stone (pretty ok edge to begin with) its a pocket knife so the edge is pretty steep

Amazon Basics has a similar unit for less. Seems like the wood base could be double sided tape to a table or bench also keep the stone in water when stored

Do not store Sharp Pebble stones in water. They get softer and softer day by day. Pretty soon its like sharpening on a big Pink Pearl eraser.

you dont really need various grits if youre just using knifes, axes, etc, and normal sharppening, also a leather belt can be use just like any other "specialty" strap.

nah. its not. you're thinking of atoma. the dmt wont hold to that kind of use. even though it costs more than an atoma, it's not as good. the reason for this is the way they're made. the dmt will corrode and flake off by the time atoma is just breaking in. much more robust.

Boy I wish I had watched this before I got one off Amazon. Same-day delivery did not make up for the lousiness. It turned to mush and made a gritty mess all over the kitchen counter, especially as the stone doesn't fit (a few mm short on the width and length) in the bamboo holder so it flicks water and slag, moving back and forth on the base. I could only draw the knife in one direction, otherwise I'd be mashing the knife into a claggy surface (reminds me of toothpaste). The only value for $38 was the lapping stone.
