I'm barely even an armchair musicologist (I occasionally watch Adam Neely, 12Tone, etc.) but to me it would be valuable to classify an instrument by what kinds of notes it produces. E.g. I would put acoustic piano, electric piano and vibraphone all in the same category because of their equal-temperment tuning, and similar common role(s) in a piece, as opposed to a timpani which can technically play multiple notes, but you'd be insane to try and play a melody on it! I love listening to Charles Berthoud because in my mind the way he plays, he turns a bass guitar into multiple instruments. This is probably a dumb and useless method of categorization, but thanks for reading anyway, lol.

@@therealalexpoole Dude. I swear he's one of the best bass players in the world. Not only is he a master of the instrument, but his arrangements just touch the soul! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5WkZoeseM53bbcsi=UtShgqdfYmvxInN4

But how thick and heavy and... metal... is a "membrane" allowed to be?
@therealalexpooleАй бұрын
That’s a great question! I think the membrane has to be stretched/under pressure in some way. The soundboard just resonates with the strings that are held by the bridges. I think… thanks for watching!

@@therealalexpoole Hmm, that's fair! I love trying to find interesting counter examples for any attempt at taxonomy, but I'll give you the point on this one. XD

the piano is a polyphonic percussive tuned string instrument
