Just recently picked up a bottle of the 5yo. I'm consistently pleased with plantation rums. I haven't been disappointed by one yet.

Probably my top pick. Plantation OD is my mix it rum. The 5yr is my neat/old fashioned. I agree with every word you've said on this rum steve.

This relaxed look or format of videos is spot on steve, leaning on the bar and chat to a mate vibes👍 seems less edit cuts too, get all your expressions and pauses for thought, great work😄

Thanks Mate 👍 Trouble is, for the viewers, this is exactly the video that won’t go on to get thousands of views. People want rapid and less waffle and get to the end quickly. When you do that, KZbin recommends the video more. So this channel will never grow too much because of my style here. But that’s why I have the main channel as the funnel.

@@StevetheBarmanRumReviews gotta do what’s best for your business, I’ll watch anything that’s posted but was a nice surprise at how much of a one-to-one feel these videos have. It’s a real shame the way algorithms play their part sometimes

Ha. Yeah they’re so much easier and quicker to film as well. And it’s not the Algorithm. It’s the Viewer. It’s you guys. The majorities viewing habits. I’m the same. I watch at x1.5 speed. I can’t do slow. “Get to the point man”. I’m that guy 😂

Not a huge rum drinker but I’m looking at getting into it. I’m more of a bourbon and whisky drinker. But I do enjoy some dark rum and I certainly cook with it.

Great video. Definitely subbed. When it comes to rum probably my third favorite. Right behind Mt Gay XO and Appleton 12 year. Need to get around to the Plantation XO cheers

We only get the Grande Reserve (in Finland), but we love it in a Daquiri with the wife over a white rum. It adds complexity in the taste.

Plantation 5 was (I think) the first proper rum I purchased after Bacardi spice. With coke I get lots of coconut which if you know me is always a good thing! I have only tried Doorlys XO which has totally put me off of trying any of the others. So I am 100% team Plantation!

Ha. Yeah Doorlys XO is a weird one. Too much Sherry for me. But isn’t consistent of the rest of the Doorlys Range. You probably picked the wrong one to try.

The discovery of quality rums was the natural consequence of my lockdown project of learning to make my own tiki cocktails and this one I got first as a good "middle of the board" rum for cocktails. I was so pleased to discover that it's such a great sipper as well.

I enjoy both brands and I think they both do a service to the Rum Community. Plantation imo being the best bang for your buck option, approachable, and fantastic in cocktails whereas Foursquare with quality & taste. I would say the latter/Foursquare is also important in bringing respectability to the rum category since unfortunately there is a negative perception of rum from both the Whisky and Tequila worlds. I think it stems from the prevalence of "bad" offerings from the likes of Captain Morgan, Bacardi, and Bumbu, etc.. Personally my favorite Dark Rum and Flavored Rum is Plantation OFTD and Plantation Stiggins-Pineapple whereas Foursquare features my favorite White Rum and Sipping Rum (Probitas and Foursquare 2008 Cask Strength). Appleton 12 is my favorite Jamaican Rum and El Dorado 15 my favorite Demerara Rum

Does anyone get a Amburana Finished kind of taste? I get a slight cinnamon test crunch finish. One of my favorites neat.

Funny how much tastes can differ, I'm actually the total opposite of you as the plantation five year is my go-to for most mixed drinks, while the doorlys I prefer neat (I love that the lack of sugar forces you to slow down a little bit while drinking it). While I'd probably say I prefer the plantation in mixed drinks, Doorly's is just so much cheaper here in the US (a 1.75L of the five year is literally $27usd) so it's hard to justify it. Probably gonna enjoy the rest of my plantation, then stick to doorly's for the time being. Much love to the Plantation though, it's the rum that got me into rums!

I’m betting these days you would probably recommend a St Lucian rum over these?

The 5 Years is missing from my Plantation collection but how does it compare to the Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve?
@StevetheBarmanRumReviews
@StevetheBarmanRumReviews Жыл бұрын
Typically, you’ll get one of the other. We don’t get the Grande Reserve. We get the longer Aged Barbados rum. The Grande Reserve is primarily Northern Europe and the US.

I know you can’t simplify things as I am doing now, but 5 year olds seem weird to me. I‘ve not had one that I‘ve really liked. In general I love unaged and up to 3ish years old rums because the original distillate is more present or because they tend to be more vibrant. I find a short sherry finish to be very interesting while longer contact with a sherry barrel often makes the rum a bit boring. And then I like the older ones, approx. 8 years and older, depending on where the barrels have been stored, before the wood becomes too dominant in some. Long story short: for me there are two sweet spots in age and 5 year olds tend to sit between them why I usually don’t buy them.

I 100% get you! I really do. And it's weird because i don't look at this as a 5yo. I don't even contemplate it. But I often refer to El Dorado, Doorlys, Panama Pacific, Real Mc etc in Discord. Look I don't really go for long aged either, like 12+. I like them, but I don't grab them. But I'm much happier with 7-9/10 yo Rums, or Unaged to 3yo. 5yo is just a weird one that doesn't sit well with me. ED5 and Doorlys 5 are just unforgettable for me.

For me, it’s way too light in every respect. Flavor, mouth feel, finish etc. What is there is rather pleasant and delicious but it’s kinda like Diet Rum imo.
