The Porsche 911 is an amazing sports car, but what would it be like to drive every day? Most sports cars do not make good daily drivers, but is the same true for the new 992 911? With every generation, Porsche refines, and improves on the legendary sports car, so I wondered, has it become so refined, and so brilliant, that it can be used as a daily?

I’ve had my 992 Carrera for 16 months now and it is my daily driver. I can honestly say that’s it’s the perfect car. I’ve had zero problems in my 13,000 miles I’ve put on it. Switched out the rear tires. It handles like a dream and it’s fast as hell. The technology is fantastic. The Bose system sounds amazing. I really can’t say enough great things about it. Perfect car. Really put a lot of thought into purchasing one of these for my daily. What’s your experience with service and costs. Did you do the dealership maintenance plan or you have someone you like working on it? I’ve heard mixed reviews based on how many miles you put on it per year.

That is precisely the strong point of a 911 (track versions such as GT3s not considered), you can literally drive them in all conditions and in pretty decent comfort (as you pointed out). No other sports car has, to my knowledge, the equivalent capacity. Hence the success and renown of the 911 celebrating it’s sixtieth birthday this year. 😎

You did an absolutely fantastic job; very well done. I talk to many sports car owners, and I always find it interesting that a large percentage (no hard data numbers) of Corvette owners "garage queen" their cars and drive them on only a few occasions. While Porsche owners, their faces light up at any chance to drive their cars, and they bought them to drive daily. Although the Corvette can be used as a "daily" many mentioned, ride quality, expensive tires, drivability, accident fright, and other reasons. One thing I do greatly respect and admire about Corvette owners is the "Corvette Wave." Their loyalty to each other by waving, helping another owner, or walking over at a gas station and acknowledging each other is arguably like not many other sports car ownership.

First, nice format you have on you channel! I'm trying to decide b/t a 911 and a C8 Z06. Thanks for the video. Previous generations of Porsche had motor issues (i.e. bore scoring ...related to Lokasil cylinder coating, IMS bearing, early, and early models which had no radiators ......cooling etc.). Has Porsche replaced the Lokasil coating and use something else in the 992 cylinders?
@carcaveofficial
@carcaveofficial Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I have no idea, but me personally, I would go for the 911. I haven’t driven the C8 Z06, but I have driven the C7 Z06 and the base C8. They are fine, and they perform extremely well, but idk, they can’t really hold a candle to overall driving feel of a 911. It all depends on what you want the car for As for the motor issues, I am not sure on what coating they use for the cylinders. But I know plenty of people that own 911’s, as long as you do your routine maintenance, I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

I've been daily driving a Carrera 4 2018 for the last three years, including in the Canadian winter. True that it's awesome to handle, seats are comfortable (and I'm 6'4"), it's very reliable (I'm over 60k km), there's enough cargo space for most daily needs, and comfort features are efficient (heating, A/C, heated seats and steering wheel). That said, there are serious downsides. Quebec roads tend to be in horrible conditions with lots of pot holes and cracks, especially during the winter and spring. You will feel each one of them and need be extra careful not to hit any significant hole. Son comfort isn't that great. You'll need to drive super slow to get out of some places when there's a (not so) steep entrance or your nose is going to scrape on the ground. Cargo is very limited, you won't be able to transport anything bigger than a carry-on luggage. Finally, doors are wide so you'll have a hard time getting in and out of the car if you park in a tight space or if someone parks close to you. Don't get me wrong, it's a great car, but it appears like most daily driving reviews focus almost only on the positive are made with borrowed cars that weren't really tested as a real daily driver.

Up until a week ago, my daily driver was a 2003 BMW 330i purchased new. A really nice car. On Sunday past, I took delivery of an Agate Grey C2……after a 3 year wait. My intention is to make it my new DD. After 200 miles, I had to take it back…….to have a clear mask installed ! I really hated to part with it yesterday…..but in 3 or 4 days I’ll get it back with the paint well protected. My initial impressions: The car exceeded my expectations in every way….ride, interior noise ( yes, is louder than a Bentley….but it’s a PORSCHE ) and the way it drives !! It’s 385 hp and I am breaking it in by the book. BUT…..it feels like it can’t wait to scream !!! I would caution anyone serious about this car to go over the options ….then go over them another dozen times…..and talk to you Porsche Rep. There are a few lower cost options you can easily miss that you WILL regret…ie $250.00 extended range fuel tank !! It is a no-brainer. It gives you 23 gal of gas….up from about 16. Your transmission will be a fantastic PDK…..no option here. When I dropped my car off for the clear mask, I had 200 miles showing on the odo….and 358 left before needing fuel ! These cars are off the chart beautiful to drive……just get used to a little extra attention, in a very positive way !

Something a few of your commenters mentioned, yes great daily driver!, but there is a cool factor that is hard to put a price on. I don't drive a porsche, but I do daily drive a BMW M6, no need to measure dicks, I just feel great every time I drive it, as I imagine a 911 driver would feel. Lots of people in Germany drive their 911s daily. It's one of the best, if not the best, grand touring cars. I mean, that's what I'd call it, a Gran Turismo. Unless you're talking GT3, GT3 RS, GT2, etc. the 911 is a GT, not a puristic sports car. (the irony being that the sports car versions of the 911 have GT in the name :D ) In the Porsche line-up of today the title of "puristic sports car" has to go to the Cayman and Boxster.

@@carcaveofficial if I ever buy a 911 I'd go for the 991. It's almost as refined as the 992 but so much smaller! The 992 is just simply too big. Especially here in Germany. On US roads with US parking spaces, yeah, sure... why not... but it's a pain in the butt if you're driving a big car in Germany. Most of the roads in my tiny village are too narrow for two cars to pass each other. Motivated to switch from MB E Coupe to a 992 911 C4 or C4S, but regarding a daily, I find 911 is less practical in space, ie luggage space is way smaller than a MB E Coupe and the rear seats fail to accommodate two adults when needed. Unlike E Coupe's no-B-pillar design, 911's driver seat back opening to the rear is on the small side, which limits its practicality as a daily again. 911 offers more driving pleasure than an E Coupe does, but not to the extent of the price difference. So to me 911 is not an allrounder, but a very interesting driver's dream car that brings you from point A to point B in style.
@carcaveofficial
@carcaveofficial 8 ай бұрын
In terms of needing to occasionally transport more than one passenger, yea, the 911 wouldn't be the greatest. As for driving pleasure, I have a bit of seat time in an E-coupe, and though they are great luxury cars, I must say the 911 is vastly superior in terms of how enjoyable it is to drive. That being said, the E coupe is likely more comfortable and as you said, easier to live with. It all comes down to what you need in a car, but, I do think the 911 can be daily driven!

@@carcaveofficial Thank you so much for your input. Please help me out further. I test drove a 2009 911 C4S and a 2020 Panamera 4S at a time my daily were a 280hp Saab wagon and a 330hp Volvo wagon. Surprisingly, my dream 911, though an old used one, didn't bring me smiles during self test drive. In my mind I was like "Is this it? Is this it?" The shop owner said maybe I should look into GTS or beyond. I'm considering registering Porsche subscription to live with a 992 911 C4S for 1 month before this snowy winter. What should I expect? I've got high expectations since 911 my dream car since little, but kind of afraid I might get disappointed in some way and ruins my dream of 911 ownership.
@carcaveofficial
@carcaveofficial 7 ай бұрын
I did drive an older C4S in my early days of experiencing Porsche's, and I had it for a day. Drove it around town, up some mountain roads, and I was similarly disappointed. However, not long after, I had another opportunity and it changed my perspective. I think with used Porsche, there is an element of care you have to take in your expectations. If the car wasn't cared for well, it may not drive all that well. Again, this is only in my limited experience, and opinion. The 992 C4S is a significantly faster, and more refined car than the 2009 (997 Gen) you drove prior. What to expect? Expect TORQUE. When those turbos kick in, they kick in! I think it takes time to truly understand and appreciate Porsche. They aren't cars you can fully understand in the span of a test drive. For me, just as a side story, when I drove my Boxster the first time, I wasn't 'blown away' by it. It was fun, sounded decent, nothing crazy. After owning it for almost two years now, I can tell you it is my favorite car. I will drive other, far more expensive cars, and still be more excited to jump in my Boxster. That being said, I do not think the answer is to go for a GTS. That is more powerful, but also more money. To really enjoy the Porsche, I don't think the answer is to spend more money, I think it is to spend more time. Give the car a chance, and if at the end, you still aren't feeling it, that is okay too! I hope that helps and wasn't just a bunch of nonsense!

@@agnesf2659 If you go for the Cayman, I would try out the GTS if you can. The naturally aspirated 4.0L flat-six is very enjoyable to drive, the Boxster GTS if you want that open-top feeling, just note that for the 718 you would have to go for a 2020 or newer, which is when they switched back to the NA flat-6. The FF is magnificent. Ferrari is the only brand that would pull me away from Porsche, but that is because I have a biased love for the Cavallino! Either way, I hope things work out for you!

Some of the GT cars have rear seat deletes. I used to have a Fiesta ST!

How about working on the car yourself? Or at least self maintenance, oil changes, filter changes, brake pads. How difficult is it?
@carcaveofficial
@carcaveofficial 6 ай бұрын
I think it just depends on your comfort level, you will definitely save money skipping on labor costs and not paying the dealer tax on parts, but not everyone wants to work on their own cars...

You can't get a manual transmission unless you start with a T or S.

Porsche is a great car if you want to drive it drive it as a normal car you can, if you want a little sports feel you can drive it like that as well. I know someone he has a great job he can buy any car he has a business, but he choices to drive a honda he dont know anything about cars i told him buy a porsche i took him to the dealer ship he test drove one he never went back to a hond after that ha ha Porsche has the best of both worlds. GT3 RS is the best Porsche . Porsche makes great sports cars there steering wheels are great.t drive it as a normal car you can, if you want a little sports feel you can drive it like that as well. as for a Honda civic you cant turn any button on it to turn it into a sports ca

You’re obviously not a Porsche enthusiast. base 992’s do not come with a manual unless they are a Carrera T

"I'm not hugely tall" lol just say you're tall. dafuq. 6'2 is way taller than the average 5'9 the first thing I wondered on the interior shot is why it looked like you were laying down. I think Benz makes better fun dailies for values but I'd considered the Porsche entirely because of the deprecation being not quite as bad.

If you are buying a Porsche 'entirely' because of the depreciation, or lack there of, you are missing the point. They are great cars, not because they don't depreciate, they don't depreciate because they are great cars.

@@carcaveofficial I would say the same thing about AMG vehicles though. I'll get a Porsche eventually. But as of now I'd say the SL's are a better car. The only downside being they're not as fast. They're more comfortable, sound better imo, have more uses (daily), are less expensive, and imo are just more fun. As someone who owns real estate, I'll be purchasing anything that holds value. Which is why I will probably own a Porsche eventually. The U.S. Dollar is done.

I’m looking for a daily. Tried the s class coupe s63 but it felt like my high spec Volvo xc90 but lower down driving position. Harry’s garage KZbin post says a 992 is deafening at highway speeds. Surely then not a good daily?
