Is the Premier League Planning to Acquire EFL to Safeguard against Super League Threat?

As an American, promotion and relegation is what sparked my interest in football (soccer in the states) some years ago. Most Americans only play football at a very young age (I'm 30, so you understand my age generation) mainly due the physical nature in American football. Then as my generation got older, we played American football, basketball or baseball. Football is very expensive to play after grade school. American football, basketball and baseball are not. This is slowly changing and our younger generation tend to really enjoy football. I see a battle between the MLS and Premier League to capture this new/younger generation of Americans. I hope is promotion and relegation is not lost as the NFL use to be my favorite thing to watch, but if you're the worst team in the NFL then you get rewarded (via the NFL draft). I am now a football junky. I am a Leeds United supporter for life as they have long been my favorite team over my former favorite American team. MOT!

@@Monnisti That is because in the USA the model used in the rest of the world of academies is mostly illegal. In the USA kids wishing to learn how to play soccer/football must pay thousands of dollars per year (Pay-to-Play). Academies by professional teams need very special teaching exemptions from standard US law. It is ILLEGAL for any child age 10-thru-16-year-old not to be in a regular middle/high school or school certified home program. This stems from the high number of dropouts/ school truancy issues in 1980s & 1990s. A youth program like those in Europe would shut down, those in charge might be arrested, and the parents fine up to $1,500 with the possibility of having their kids taken away from them. Therefore, US sport academies cost a LOT of money to operate to meet the school standards. No one in the US is going to pay for a bunch of kids to attend without getting something in return - hence pay-to-play!

Promotion/Relegation is a solution to having too many soccer clubs for a given country/market. In the UK every tiny town of 5,000 people has a professional club which may be fine for them but is idiotic to think will be the case in the USA for at least 25 years. UK teams have travel 25 to 50 kilometers or at most 600 km. Meanwhile in the US teams have to travel 500 kilometers to their closest competitors and frequently up to 4,000 km. For example, in Division II USL Eastern Conference Detroit FC has to travel 1200 km to play Birmingham and 950 km to play Hartford. To play a team in California is 3,000 km away. Because of the small # of fans (tickets) & the lack of media $$ added to the costs of players, facilities, etc. plus the huge travel costs in the USA it makes NO financial sense for a promoted team that does not have any money to try & travel 3,000 km every week and not go bankrupt within two years. How long would EFL league teams stay in existence if they had to travel EVERY WEEK to Spain, Sweden, Greece & Poland? They wouldn’t. Perhaps in 25 years the US will have regional leagues each with 20+ teams & limited travel. Once that happens THEN we can talk about pro/rel.

Surely it can’t be that expensive to buy a football and go to a local park? I mean obviously the youth set up is massively different but it’s not expensive to play football in America. I would pop down to my local 7/11 when I lived in SJ and find balls there. Playing it in a public park with crackheads cutting about wouldn’t be fun though.

What about they turn first the Championship into a parallel PL, then League 1 & 2 into "Championships" of PL1 and PL2, and then if they can four PLs, with the top teams from each League playing each other for the championship? Or some variation of the above? The FA Cup becomes a lot more valuable in that scenario and La Ligua, Ligue 1, Seria A and the Bundesliga become where the whipping boys in whatever UEFA competitions remain come from?

They already tried. They faced public humiliation and complete failure. If you try to assassinate the King or stage a coup, and you fail...you never get a second chance. America is ruled by a whole class of parasite billionaire financial manipulators. Health, politics, entertainment (Disney!), so called 'news', law and sport are all captured by this parasite class. No-where in the west is as backward as the United States. Chill.

Getting rid of promotion and relegation would be the WORST thing and I hope it never happens. I doubt it will given how against the super league clubs were. But that was only 6, imagine all 92 not wanting it.

@@jamestyler12JT The Europeans bitch at us constantly for not having pro/rel, etc., while the same time their leagues and clubs are drowning in debt and unable to afford anything. Meanwhile over here in the MLS, which is the same as the 2nd Tier of the biggest European Leagues, they pull in $1.55 Billion, has only a minuscule $500 million in debt, and owners that use private equity financing. In addition, we have a hard salary cap that limit player salaries to a manageable level. Our clubs are flourishing with club valuations now approaching those of the Premier League without having to worry about boom/bust. Whose way of structuring their league works financially better?

The quote from Soccernomics about how ‘sporting success doesn't matter’ in US sports makes me cringe but it's really true, the only real competition is between individual athletes for a higher prominence in the league. The lack of a real incentive for a team to win is always at the back of the fan's mind, sapping enjoyment.

Except it isn't, just ask the fans of Washington in the NFL. Or even Tampa, Cleveland or Houston, Dallas, etc., Tampa who share owners with ManU. Your owner determines whether you have a chance to win or not, and owners own for lifetimes and sometimes for generations. US sports are different as well because they are so insular, football (ours) is so valuable and interesting and has developed so much because it is Europe wide and the UEFA competitions became so valuable. I think they try to expand the PL brand into the Championship, and by doing that effectively halve the risk from relegation, while doubling the size of the product. Then close those two leagues off or make them into "Conferences" like in the NFL with each being equal in stature, and the winners of each conference playing each other to be champions. @@jasperlawrence5361All those teams except the Browns have been competitive for significant stretches throughout the years. The Bucs have even won 2 super bowls in the last 20 years. If you aren’t a fan of the top 10-15ish clubs in Europe (half of them being in England)….chances are you may never see your team play for anything more than avoiding relegation. An NFL fan will at least see their team play a playoff game or be a contender at some point.

Promotion and relegation is the soul of the sport. I can't imagine a league system without it in Europe. If it happens we as supporters have failed. By that I mean that if it happens it happens because people still watch the games and they still make money of it. The day it happens people should stop watching anymore, and give up their subscriptions etc.

But thats me.. and I know I'm probably in the small pool. There will be plenty thats going to watch it. Theres a reason I could never spend time watching MLS. Thats because no one ever gets relegated. Doesnt matter if you play bad all the time. You're stille going strong next year in the same competition.

If you want to see the disaster that promotion/relegation is causing in Europe, check out HITC Sevens recent video called "The Stupidest League in World Football”. In it he describes the collapse of the Italian leagues and the coming collapse of the English Champions League due to yo-yo clubs and unrestrained spending on players and how a hard cap (like the MLS) may be needed and some other possible changes. After all, the Mexican league just this last year was forced to give up pro/rel & adopt the American structure. Money is going to force that down everyone's throats in the next two decades.

And the Championship already has lots of money, is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. And the playoff final is one of the most financially beneficial 1 off game.
