The issue of dupes is complicated, and especially brands like revolution that actively try to dupe expensive brands… but the mark up on most personal care items is insane, and luxury brands will charge as much as people will pay, not as much as it is worth. As a friend told me one of her professors said once "you don't have to be the first to do something, you just have to do it best" and if this new brand give results comparable to K18 AND a lower price point, why shouldn't people use it? Yes, they took some packaging and marketing ideas from K18, but why shouldn't they go that route when it will get their product in front of the people most likely to buy it and keep the market competitive. Also, just out of genuine curiosity, I'm wondering if Abbey applies this idea to every product in her life? No store brand food or drug store brand meds only name brands? I'm not trying to hate, but to make a point that this is a pretty high (and expensive/privileged) bar she's setting for herself. Anyways, thanks for the video! I've been getting into hair and hair products lately so it was an interesting watch. I appreciate the discussion of actual ingredients and specific wordings.

If you are referring to elf makeup dupes, then I think its different because makeup is not meant to treat anything. K18 however is using science trying to fix the structure of your hair, and is apparently proven to work whereas this dupe doesn't have links to the studies they conducted. I completely understand wanting to have more affordable options however from my understanding there is usually more work that goes into skincare/ bond repair haircare compared to makeup. Because there is a lot of research that goes into whether the stuff can actually work. The creator of k18 is a researcher and professor and im sure a lot of time and money was put into creating K18.

@@soude85 i just feel like your misunderstanding is about the difference between haircare/skincare and makeup/fragrance. because makeup/ fragrance just has to ensure that it wont harm you, other than that its just for aesthetics. whereas hair/skincare has additional testing of whether or not it works (which makes it more expensive). fragrance dupes are not something to be skeptical of because the only purpose of fragrance is the smell, so if it smells good then there is nothing else to take into account. whereas you need science to know if haircare works. like you said they probably didn't take the k18 recipe, well then how are you sure it will do the same thing as k18? in addition they don't provide the same amount of information about their technology compared to k18 which also makes me skeptical. (i also don't see where you think I demonized a brand because all i say is that im skeptical of whether or not their technology works, which isn't demonizing?) however it would be super cool if this new brand worked!

I don't think there's any 'honorable' way to run a brand/business when the end result is nothing but profit, which is the case for literally every corporation inherently. Revolution is just more transparent about it than other brands. Plus, is it less ethical to dupe other brands expensive products than it is to sell a product that can be duped so cheaply for such an exorbitant price? Most of the time, that higher price accounts for - once again - corporate greed and profit margins. I actually just started using K18 based on your last video about it, and I really like the results! I was gifted a bottle so I didn't pay for it, but it is something I would considering paying for IF the results were worth it and couldn't be duped by a cheaper product. I will definitely try the Revolution one, and I appreciate your honest review and transparency even if I disagree with your overall outlook on dupe brands. Also I NEED to know what is on your lips OMG the shine was literally distracting (in a good way! lol)

Disagree with the concept of dupe brands. Companies like Olaplex, Dyson, and k18 are expensive because they factor in R&D into their price point. Some people can afford this, but not everyone can. Companies that bring the technologies or innovations to the mass market at more affordable are helping so many more people access things that normally only well-off consumers could. It creates a competitive market and encourages more R&D and innovation to keep things evolving.

How I see it, the Revolution product acts like the typical repairing conditioner that uses amino acids and conditioning ingredients to give the appearance of soft, healthy hair. Also, the Revolution product differs from K-18 by adding silicones and conditioning agents to give the hair immediate softness and smoothness.

I find it interesting that you’re against a company attempting to dupe products for cheaper… but you also say this is not so much, from the ingredients, a k-18 dupe… and they never claimed to be a k-18 dupe, whether for legal reasons or otherwise…. I just think this would’ve been better framed as a product review rather than a product comparison. Especially since you liked the product?? I just think it barely looks at all like they’re trying to copy k-18. It seems to me like that’s a narrative that didn’t actually come from the brand. 9:08 The brands/products being discussed were probably all the bond-building lines from the salon haircare brands owned by L'Oréal like L'Oréal Professionnel's Smartbond line, Redken's PH Bonding line, Mizani's Bond Phorce line, etc. All of those contained Maleic Acid as the active ingredient and there was a lawsuit involving L'Oréal and Olaplex in which Olaplex was the winner. The Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate in Olaplex is apparently the salt of Maleic Acid and the diamine formed between Diethylene Glycol and 1-Aminopropane.

@@MH-ve5sz The lawsuit between Olaplex and L'Oréal was to determine if L'Oréal willfully infringed on Olaplex's patent for the use of Maleic Acid during bleaching, since Maleic Acid can be used to adjust the pH as well. Olaplex argued that L'Oréal knew what they were doing based on the marketing behind the products as bond builders, and they won which is why those lines have been discontinued. To answer the question of which is better though, I'm honestly not sure. There's not many non-industry studies done on bond-building ingredients, pretty much all of them are done by the manufacturer/company who wants to say their specific ingredient is better, and that's assuming the studies are even available for the public to read.

I think your stance on the ethical issue of dupe brands is nice, but a bit too idealistic and potentially inconsistent. This is what the whole dupe appeal is about; I actually look to your content for dupes. Two examples that I'd be curious as to what you thought of: 1) generic brand dupes (CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc) 2) vitamin c serums with ferulic acid and vit e (Timeless vs SkinCeuticals). With this logic, it seems what would follow is that people "should" either dish out that $180 or just go without, in order to boycott Timeless' unethical product. Makes no sense to me as a consumer.

I don't know that it's totally fair on this particular product to call it a rip off. They don't say they'll do what K18 says. I think Makeup Revolution has absolutely ripped off products but I don't think this one is. I think they absolutely jump on trends, as all brands do. Love you Abbey and always watch all of your videos! I just disagree a little bit on this one. ❤

I appreciate you reviewing this and being honest about the results, as usual 😊 I have the K18 mask and it’s really lasted me as I only need 2 pumps and only use every 2 weeks (every 3/4 washes). So the cost has been ok for me. In between I use Living Proof Triple Action bond repair every alternate week and the Redken bond repair conditioner. All of these are from your recommendations and have kept my bleached fine hair in beautiful condition. So I kind of don’t mind paying for great results, for products that last. I did pick up the dupe for the Colour Wow Dreamcoat you reviewed and I LOVE it so I guess I’m not against trying dupes if they’re as good or better. This Revolution product doesn’t sound like it will be as good as K18 for my hair so I’ll leave it. But if I was broke I’d definitely buy it. When I had little money I couldn’t afford scruples around which companies were ripping each other off. Same with skincare. I just wanted something that worked that was in my budget. Now I can afford to splurge when I want to. But I’m 52 so I’m dealing with more hair/skin challenges than I used to xox

ELF is everywhere right now, it’s no coincidence they’ve got even more popular now that they are blatantly duping high-end brands. Makeup Revolution has a lot of products that aren’t dupes, but those don’t seem to go viral. It’s because of consumers and beauty influencers that we continue to see a rise in dupes, a message has been sent to brands that it’s okay. Their products are much more likely to “go viral” because everyone wants to get their hands on it and compare it to the real deal.

While I agree with the problem with the ethics of the brand, I also understand the financial side for some consumers. K18 is an expensive product, and I’ve used it so I know how good it is, but not everyone can afford to outlay that cost, for most that would be cost prohibitive. So, the fact that this does have good ingredients that will help the hair at a cost most people can afford is very enticing. It’s hard to fault people for wanting to use it for that reason alone. Will I use it? More than likely not, but I’m in a position that I can afford K18, not everyone can. So, I do get the draw and why it will probably sell quite well. No matter what the ethics are regarding the brand.

Are you serious? Why would you not want consumers to pay less for good haircare. How is this different from say a CVS house product that dupes a higher priced product? What this tells me is that K18 & Olaplex are WAY overcharging consumers. I think you are missing this big time! I don’t find them to be shady at all.

Yeah, the fact that they can create a dupe that costs so much less just shows you how insane the markup is when it comes to high end brands and that’s not cool. Isn’t it shady to make us may so much money for what costs so little? I do think it’s gross when they try to dupe small brands though:( But huge companies who charge $60 for a hair mask… nah 😄

@@zarafuerstein1012 AGREE! And K18 charges $75. It’s insane. I would think Abby would want her viewers to get the best deals possible but instead she is shaming the company for trying to dupe when all the stores do it….CVS, Walmart, Target etc. They all have their own brands and even state on their packages “Compare to Aveeno” as an example. It was disappointing to hear her shaming this company.

I honestly do not see anything wrong/unethical/unlawful unless they stole the formula from K 18 or something... I can totally make an opposite argument, the Revolution company is offering great quality products to people who otherwise would not be able to afford them. K 18 is extremely costly, I can't imagine their ingredients are so much more costly than the ones used in this dupe. It kind of reminds me of the prices of medications in the US (extremely expensive) versus the same medications in Canada, Mexico or Europe, India (more affordable) In the end its a matter of who is less ethical the company that charges extremely high prices or the company that offers similar good results but at lower prices.

Totally agree there. My uncle has leukemia And his meds cost 37k per month! He would die without it. Thankfully the pharmaceutical company is covering it for him. If there were a generic for $500, would that be unethical. I dare say no.

If a brand has a truly innovative product/ingredient, they will get a patent for it ... and "dupes" will be copycats that can't actually duplicate the product. I put both Olaplex and K18 in here ... they have parented their "secret sauce" ingredients. Once the patent expires, anyone can create the ingredient and use it. Or if a product can't be patented (such as the idea of using amino acids in hair products), also anyone can use the idea. But this is not a *dupe*, it's a different product with similar end results. It sounds like Revolution took the general idea of "peptides and amino acids in hair care" and made a mask with it, that does good things for hair. The formulation does not dupe anything. However, Revolution's marketing department chose to sell it as a dupe ... which is wrong, and shady. I have no plans to buy this ... I'd rather not encourage this style of marketing. But the product might be good, despite the bad sales tactics. At least Revolution is keeping their cosmetic chemists busy doing creative work. There are several brands selling extremely overpriced products that are no different from the basics you can find in the drugstore ... those are the ones that really annoy me. [I won't name names, but the initials on some are BS, LM, AB]

I don't understand why people hate on Revolution for duping expensive products but when Auric or ELF dupe stuff, all these online creators eat it up. The all rip off other brands but one gets knocked whilst the others get praised. Speaking of Auric, the dupes they do of very popular products are MORE EXPENSIVE than the originals. I remember the Auric Glow Lust cost more than Charlotte Tilburys Hollywood Flawless Filter but even then the youtubers were singing it high praise. Make it make sense. At least Revolution offer cheaper alternatives, Auric just offers alternative packaging

I think dupes are great, and sometimes even better than the original. The sole issue I have with this is that nowadays every brand and their aunt came out with a bond repairing line and I feel like it is misleading as these key ingredients are patented (think Olaplex or K18). Now, I do think that K18 is overpriced and I personally always look for some sort of sale on several websites. I have just managed to get a 150ml bottle for $84 here in Denmark, and it is probably going to last me a whole year, therefore it really is worth it. I suppose this would be the a good way to approach K18's pricing, but otherwise one should always go for whatever is best for them. Everyone deserves to feel pampered, regardless if something is labeled "high end" or not. At the end of the day, it's just a hair product and not an "all or nothing" type of situation - the mental well-being of knowing that you got yourself something nice without breaking the bank is perhaps even more important than whether you're using K18 or a dupe.
