It won't ruin your hair. I do find that I get better results and feeling with some of the more expensive ones. I do find that some are pretty awful. Dove I tried using the second time I grew out my hair at 22, and it was just awful. I have to be much more careful (and often more sparing) with bog standard shampoo and conditioner, but there are some pretty decent ones. Besides, unless your family all want terminal hair length, it's wildly excessive to use those more expensive products.

With the cutting your hair to make it grow longer, it’s definitely supposed to mean that if you don’t get trims every so often to remove the dead ends, they will keep splitting upward and break off, so the speed of your hair growth definitely stays the same, but it’s about maintaining the length by trimming split ends before they split up or break off, preventing the “growth” (actually the length) of your hair. I think some people think it’s affecting the literal growth when it’s effecting the progress of growth. It’s still an important tip for growing long hair, people just need to understand why!

I think that "brush once a week in the shower" one was a game of telephone from the curly hair community. Because for curly hair, it is common to 1) wash weekly and 2) detangle in the shower with conditioner in. At a certain point, the lessened friction from water+conditioner outweighs the benefits of dry detangling. Especially when your dry hair curls back into tangles...speaking from experience 💀

I feel like the 'Anti-drug store' movement happened because 15 years ago we were all using Pantene and they were doing shady stuff that wrecked people's hair and there was a class action lawsuit against them. The anti-drug store movement was born when influencers started promoting products that weren't available at a store. I took care of my mane of curls for 38 years and it was just like HiF3licia (I think it is written like this). This was done with drugstore products containing sulfates and silicones. Washing your hair everyday might be worse for you hair than washing more infrequently, but washing your scalp more often if you have oily scalp it's much better for you to wash whenever necessary. I prioritize my scalp because healthy scalp=healthy hair. I tried scalp training for long periods of time and it made zero difference. I have very fine hair and fine hair means you have more hair strands, and more sebaceous filaments. There's nothing that's going to stop the oil from coming, and for the majority of people the amount of oil you produce is down to genetics and there's no amount of scalp training that will reduce the oils.
@kaylan20833 жыл бұрын
Yep. "Hair/wash training" is a bit of a myth. Unless you wash several times a day and need to lessen the frequency, you can't necessarily change the amount of oil your scalp produces. Anytime someone talks about hair training I just wanna be like, show me the studies with oil production changes.

Yes, I can't stand the salon-brand snobbery, especially because the most common complaint against drugstore shampoos is that they have sulfates, which . . . isn't true anymore. Most of them don't, and yet most of the salon-brand shampoos do (kerastase, redken, aveda to name a few). I'm convinced it's because they want you to buy their sulfate shampoos to strip the color out of your hair faster so you'll come back sooner 😂 Obviously, there are good quality salon products and bad quality drugstore products, but I can't stand it when hairstylists demonize them all.

So not all of Redkens products have sulfates! As a hairdresser, I can say they do have some great products! But,....I totally love some of my drugstore favorites that I do recommend to my clients! So the way the industry works,... if your working in a salon and they sale retail, they ofcourse are going to push their products because of the % of the sale they will make!!!! Now if your like me, and own your own salon and still recommend a professional product....BUT you resell it to your clients at the exact price you paid, then it's just because it's an awesome product!! 😊 And not washing as much is good for people that have oily hair, and you can train your hair to make less oil! But it's totally true If your scalp is sensitive and your due to dermatitis...that's a recipe for disaster! You don't want your scalp to be dehydrated nor do you want a sore, sensitive grease pit!! 😩 And I've actually read a TON of articles about sulfates because it was odd how long we have used them, then all of a sudden they were just bad!!!! But to be fair, they aren't! Someone with very sensitive scalp or skin could have a reaction from then, and that would be bad! And surfactants CAN cause color to fade faster...but thats usually only if you have vivid colors (that already fade fairly quickly) or it can cause reds to fade even faster! But that doesn't mean they should throw the entire world of people into that category! 🙄 Our sales industry is something else!

Can you recommend some drugstore shampoo/conditioner that you personally like for damaged/dry/bleached hair in desperate need of moisture? 🙏
@daniellewinkelspecht83562 жыл бұрын
The drugstore snobbery is beyond ridiculous. my favorite is "Salon brands use higher quality ingredients" Reeaally?! prove it. Prove to me that the Cetearyl Alcohol in your salon brand is of a better quality than the Cetearyl Alcohol in the drugstore brand. Prove to me that the manufacturer of each brand is not actually using the same cetearyl alcohol, since manufacturers of ingredients are pretty limited. "Salon brands are more concentrated" Again.. Prove it. Salon brands, and drug store brands both show water as the first ingredient. By law, the ingredient used at the highest volume percentage in the overall formula must be listed first on the ingredients label, and the rest must be listed in descending order based on overall percentage used in the formula. So, that means both brands highest used ingredient is water. Unless you know the exact formula that was used for both brands, then your OPINION that one brand is more concentrated than another brand is just that. Your opinion. And that opinion was loosely based on the fact that you do not know how to read an ingredients label, are unfamiliar with professional formulation, and because you were taught its true in Beauty School. I absolutely loathe people who try to shame other people for not purchasing salon brands. They are literally not worth the money they charge. And not everyone can afford to spend that money. If you are the type that shames someone for what they use on their hair you are an ass. Period. Let people use what they want without judging, shaming, or getting uppity about it. I dont care if you went to Beauty school or not. They do NOT teach product formulation so you have no actual background in that area to speak as if you have professional knowledge about it, so stop shaming people.

My hair has gotten a little better but my main issue is that it’s so dry that it takes on average about 3 weeks to get oily to the point that I want to wash it. I do put products in my hair after washing it to try to get it to retain moisture. Everyone always thinks that’s nasty that I don’t wash my hair every other day or at least once a week, but I’m afraid of drying my hair out if I wash that often. Is that just how my hair is, or am I doing something wrong?

Different oils work for different porosities of hair once u know if ur low or high porosity it makes a massive difference
@HavingAGoudaTime2 жыл бұрын
@@jumanahxb4087 Yes I'm aware. I'm a hairdresser and deal with porosity daily. However I would like to see more content backed by experiments/research on the hows and whys of what absorbs better and benefits the hair more so I can help my clients more with some factual evidence instead of everyone's opinion on what works best. There is an incredible amount of misinformation present in the advertising market and almost all of it contradicts itself. A type of oil is claimed to absorb into the cuticle layer more or less than another, based on the molecule size, but some other study (funded by a product trying to sell something) says that that isn't the case and that THEIR product oil thing can absorb but nothing else can. Something 'adds more moisture' to the hair, but it doesn't actually add moisture as in water or hydration, it adds a type of oil based conditioning agent. Moisture doesn't mean what we think it does in hair terms. There are so many different products that claim to change everyone's hair in dramatic ways but only have their statement to back it up. the only actual studies that I'm aware of on these topics are funded by brands pushing their products and are biased. This is a complicated topic and I would love to see more work done on it.

My hairdresser explained the reason why people say that cutting the hair makes it grow more: it's advice for people who are growing their because they want more length. The hair grows from the root, so obviously the ends of the hair don't dictate growth rate, BUT she stated that frequent trims keep the hair healthier by avoiding split ends. She said that a split end is kind of like a run in a stocking: it splits "upwards," and then you have to cut that part off. You'll have to cut more if not addressed routinely, therefore cutting off the length. I hope that makes sense. :)

It's simple: we have to wash our hair when it's dirty! so sometimes it can be everyday, it depends on our lifestyle. Scalp=Skin, it's not good to keep it dirty too long. But if it's everyday, protecting our hair with coconut oil before is a good idea!

I think it's hard for a lot of us, including myself, to understand that what works for you, works for you. Much like skincare and everything else about our bodies, everyone's hair isn't the same and it is totally possible that what works fantastic for one person doesn't work for the next person's hair type. I've been trying really hard to rememeber that!

All the advice I was given when I was younger was to never brush my hair between washes or only in the shower because I'd lose all my curl definition and my hair would get frizzy. But what they didn't tell me was that if I brushed my hair every night it would be frizzy, but only until I spritzed it with water the next morning and got all my curls back.

If you have wavy or curly hair do not brush your hair everyday especially if it’s dry or you going to be wondering why you have a head full of fairy knots. Water and lots of slip is your best friend. And if you use a brush use one that’s targeted to detangling. Also brushing too often can damage the curl structure of your hair.

It's the best conditioner and protectant for your hair it coats the strands and protects them. So prolonging wash day helps your hair get coated with the oils and protects the hair which is why you should brush more then once a week. however not washing your hair will clogged pores as well I wash once a week for some twice a week is great but everyday is a lot

I workout every day and I have a very sweaty head, so my hair is saturated dripping with salty sweat at least once a day. If I don’t wash it the salt absolutely wrecks my hair, it gets like straw. So I wash every day, rinsing doesn’t cut it, just washing does. Saying that I am very careful about touching it gently when I am washing it and I use a deep conditioning mask every day. I do an olaplex treatment once a week and a keratin treatment once a week too. My hair is long processed blonde and it’s very healthy.

i trained as a hairdresser ..you are the only one that talks about swelling of hair when wet and its why we were always told drying your hair as quickly as possible was best i.e with a hairdryer just not too hot or close and with the correct brush because it was less damaging than natural drying. i have told a lot of people who don't believe me ..water damage is prevented only THREE ways ...not getting your hair wet or drying it as fast as you can.....ie with a dryer the longer its wet the more damage you get or lastly oiling your hair before you get it wet ...the oil helps protect your hair from the water ...and it doesn't matter if you put it in a protective hair style it still swells but if you have to let it dry naturally put it in a protective hairstyle ..also dont mistake your hair just drying frizzy or weird with actual damage ...people get too fussy

I love hearing wash frequency addressed, the only thing I wish was more explicitly touched on was that some people really do need to wash their hair every day due to lifestyle. I work in a barn, in a manual labor capacity, in a tropical climate. My whole body is dusty, dirty, and sweaty enough at the end of the day to need a proper wash, hair included. Maybe in a different life I wouldn't wash every day, but just talking about breakage isn't the full picture of what's right for each person

I went to a new hairdresser to get my hair lightened, I was told by the hairdresser that anything purchased of Amazon/EBay/supermarket/chemist will ruin the blonde the hairdresser achieved in salon and the only way to guarantee the blonde will remain for as long as possible is to use Salon products only 🤨 I was annoyed as the hairdresser didn’t even know the brand that was being dismissed.

Mask or Conditioner and mix well apply to wet hair and use a blow dryer to heat it until excess water is gone and hair feels “Oily” add water and emulsify, rinse well and shampoo this gives the hair a deep oil treatment that lasts for several shampoos without leaving hair oily or greasy.

In mid-2020 I was looking up ways to remove an Arctic Fox dye. The particular color (diluted burgundy to make pink) was difficult to remove with normal washing so I went to youtube for help (BIG MISS STEAK); one of her recommendations was to use the "baking soda method" to remove the color.....YIKES. The color came out all right but my hair was breaking off in clumps after trying it. I was lucky enough that a lot of length stayed in tact and it only looked like I got layers cut. But I will never, ever let baking soda near my head again LOL.

Can you settle the debate that's going around online about if blow-drying is more or less damaging than air-drying? 🤔 Of course everyone has different hair densities and textures so the amount it takes one person's hair to dry is going to be different from another. And some people hover-diffuse or hover-blow dry so the blow-dryer isn't in direct contact. Just curious because I keep seeing stuff online?

It’s definitely taken me a long time to figure out a good washing schedule for me, especially with changes to moving and my water source changing, my workout schedule, and change to products. As for a protective style at night, I do a loose braid normally but after wash day it’s different. I know a lot of wavies/curlies put hair in a pineapple, but this doesn’t work for my hairline. I now flip my hair up loosely, but use a small jaw clip and clip the ends of my hair up on the top of my head. The key is to not clip tight to your scalp and don’t pull hair tight. It works to keep my waves in tact for a day or two longer! These are excellent points to go over and you offered a lot of clarity on all these! Thank you for all the research and explaining you do for us. 😃

Frequent washing and using a stripping shampoo can create a dry, tight scalp which pumps out oil to soothe the scalp and protect it from cracking which can make the scalp feel greasy just hours after washing and this can create a viscous cycle of washing / oily scalp especially when you are having hormonal issues ( pregnancy / stress / puberty / menstruation ) this won’t make hair more oily just the scalp area because it can’t spread down the shaft unless you comb or brush it.

Now I only do it once in a blue moon when I only have the option of a late-day shower. It has helped a lot too. Could you make a video on protective hair styles for under helmets and hard hats? I have curly hair, use a conditioner as a detangler when I dry brush my hair before washing it once a week (sometimes two, but that's pushing it). For light tangles it combs right out but I wet my comb for the extra slippage for bigger tangles. I find having control over how wet my hair gets when combing it out gives me less breakage then just soaking my whole head. My hair has never looked more healthier! Everyone is different though, so saying everyone MUST do something just doesn't work.

I have very fine hair and I wash my hair every day in the week, because if I don’t then it has no life/volume. I am thoughtful in how I do it though. Overall good video but some of the advice is really targeted to people with straight hair. Those of us with curly hair cannot dry brush or we’d break up our curl patterns and cause a lot of frizz. Curly hair should be brushed with conditioner in the hair. Many curlies also brush only once a week because we only brush on wash day. I personally like to do damp refreshes but not everyone does the same! We also don’t use shampoo as often as people with straight hair - we sometimes conditioner wash only.

For the shampoo part it's not true. Having curly hair mean the oil doesn't go down on the hair aswell, so the length is more prone to dryness but it doesn't mean our scalp is less prone to oiliness. Some of us are just unlucky 😢

I wash my hair 3-4 times a week at least, if I don't my hair starts to look flatter or weighted down, and itchy but it also depends on my workout routine. If I work out every single day I will most likely increase how much I wash my hair. I fell into a trap of using only "green" "natural" hair products and found that it made me shed more than normal so I went back to drugstore shampoos and my hair shedding reduced substantially, having said that some drugstore shampoos weigh my hair down too much that it feels as if I haven't wash my hair in dayssss.... so what might work for some might not work for others for sure!

I thought it was bad to blow dry my hair because of heat damage etc. But for me, I'm very prone to scalp yeast infections/ fungal infections on my scalp from damp hair. Blow drying helped my hair so much because it helped my scalp and helped stop the fungal infections, I also use anti fungal shampoo with active ingredients but they have harsh sulfates in. This still works well for me. Everyone's hair is different, if you find something works for you don't necessarily have to change it based of what people say. :))

I do not understand the whole fuss with the “drugstore products are bad” “they will ruin your hair overtime” no it won't?? I like to brag that I have very thick, naturally wavy-curly bleached blonde hair that is pretty long and healthy and gets lots of compliments from hairstylists. Even though the same hairstylists would probably throw hands when I tell them what I use 😂😂. I absolutely love Loreal Elvive Paris. Hands down. The best products for me are the Dream Lengths and Color Vive shampoo and conditioner. Using Elvive for YEARS has made my hair grow so much and keep it at its healthiest, plus my hairstylist loves these products too! I can wash often as they’re not stripping despite containing Sodium Laureth Sulfate (an ingredient SO many people demonize nowadays). The moment I tried out these sulfate-free, silicone-free popular brands everyone on social media is talking about my hair had been at its WORST. It didn’t feel right, it was brassy and got split ends from them drying my hair out so much. So I realised I have to stop listening to people that have no real knowledge of what a good shampoo and conditioner is. My opinion is that all of them are good! Just like these “natural” products didn’t work for me, Elvive might not work for you. There are products out there for everyone. Please don’t be ashamed if you use drugstore products as they’re amazing and in most cases it all relies on publicity and people trying to sell their product + sponsors.
