Is the Rolleiflex 3.5F for Landscape Photography - New Zealand

I have the K4a, the predecessor to the 3.5F. They are absolutely for landscape photography, and there is much to be said for a camera with a fixed ' normal ' lens. The freedom it affords the photographer from carrying tons of heavy lenses that hardly ever get used, helps with strong compositions. The photographs were lovely, well done.

yes, great point at 8:10 and also from reading Rollieflex books the "safety" of the viewing lens, what I mean is the dof of the viewing lens is SMALLER than that of the taking lens, so if it is reasonable in the viewer, you HAVE it for sure on film!! (greater lattitude), so there is this fact to consider as well, when looking at tlr's vs. Slr's, also the fact the view is NEVER cut off so you can check after if the composition changed, also as you CAN see without cocking the shutter, you can compose and prepare, with the shutter un-cocked, as per the previous comment, so this locks the shutter.

Yeah it was one of the more enjoyable sessions I have had lately especially with the lockdowns we are experiencing...day 97 I think. Great to get out and just shoot! Very happy to subscribe mate. You have a great eye for compo. I use the very same camera but shoot largely black and white minimalist-hence I loved the first Island image. By way of an aside it was totally refreshing to see a presentation by someone who doesn't wear his hat backwards or bang on about "making images". Of course you can do landscape with the Rolleiflex - when it's the only camera you have. I personally think that a more rectangular format is better for landscape. I have converted a couple of 100 years old Kodak 3-A cameras to take pictures on 120 film in a 6x14cm format, these are the ones I mostly use for landscapes, sometimes also a 6x9 Moskva 5 or a 4,5x6 Fuji GS645 pro. Very, very rarely the Rolleiflex - however a TLR is actually my number one street photography camera.

There is advantage in shooting landscapes with a square format. You have the option to crop to a landscape format if you like with a choice of post shoot composition by vertical pan and scan. And square photos of landscapes look beautiful if shot by a photographer with artistic vision. Kenna is a good example of it among others. If anything, a TLR is a cumbersome camera for street photography that takes more effort to use in a fast paced situation than a nimble RF or SLR camera.

Great pictures! I've started to search for my own Rolleiflex because of this video 🙂 12:26 Your comment about not bringing the Hasselblad left me thinking why not just drum scan the negative and crop to your liking? It's 120 film so the resolution is amazing and perfect for croping.

Rolleiflex is perflectly fine for landscape, in the same way using wide angle lens for fashion shoot or telephoto lens for street photography: you just need to know where to frame. Of course, sometimes 6x6 landscape composition is tricky. In some situation, I definitely prefer a normal wide angle lens, or even panoramic format like X-Pan.

Nice video and photos! Truth tell, I have a Rollei. I sure miss my Mamiyaflex c series with various lenses. Sure, it's heavy, but worth it, if one is younger and stronger. I think carrying Rollei while on tripod, bad idea. Back not that strong!

great video, loved a review, but of a cameras suitabillity for this genre of photography!, and also as an explination to everyone, that are not Rollieflex afficianado's: the reason he does not crank the film advance straight after taking a shot is simple, some Rollieflex/Rolliechords DON'T have any kind of shutter button lock!, this process is the 'work around', as the shutter can't fire, if it is already de-cocked! this model, does have a shutter button lock, however; so he could lock the button, another reason to be CAREFULL is that there is NO darkslide, like in say a hasselblad 500c\m, Rollieflex SL2000f/3000f (35 mm format), mamiya press 6x9 or RB/RZ67 as this acts as a film safety, as well as on some of these cameras an interlock prevents shutter release if these magasines have the slide in, a form of shutter locking. (and even if the button got pressed, on most cameras, this does not necisarily mean a "wasted frame", as with magasine cameras, cocking can occur with the back REMOVED, as in hasselblad technique, for multi-exposing, and syncing of shutter/mirror mechanics ( also relevent to mamiya RB/Z 67 cameras)).
