Russia lost more soldiers in WWII than the US, Great Britain, France,Canada,Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Japan,Romania, Italy, Finland, Hungary and Poland combined. Russia has never recovered. As Patton famously said, you don’t win wars by dying for your country. You win wars by making the other S O B die for theirs. Ukraine proves Russia has learned nothing.

No major military is fighting very much though, so i think you’re claiming too much. If china or the US got serious, you think Russia would outperform them? Remember, Ukraine is sending poorly trained soldiers to fight with old and close-to-decommission American tech. Also, the US greatly constrains itself to not directly cause too many civilian casualties (though if our buddies do it then we don’t care for some reason). Yes, Russia’s doing better than we expected. But that doesn’t mean it’s got the best military on earth, just that it’s military is better than the one of the country next to it, which we already knew had a weaker military the whole time.

The critical difference between the Russian army and its Ukrainian-NATO counterpart is leadership. The Russian fighting force is simply much better led. Take an example: The Russian military leadership, as a matter of principle, doesn't encourage terrorizing innocent civilians, unlike the Ukrainians under NATO's direction. It was the Ukrainian terrorizing of civilians in Donbas that made the Russian government embark on the SMO in the first place. Any army that consistently and deliberately attacks non-combatants (children, women, etc.) will end up losing. Thus NATO and Ukraine are bound to lose just as Israel is.

If NATO and just the USA were certain of winning, they would have entered the fray as they always have. In this specific case, they even declared at the start of the conflict that they were not ready for this type of conflict and adversary. Don't forget, the USA is fearful, without the USSR it would not travel to Africa or Europe to fight the Reich. And then, the USA always fights as a pack against a third world country and yet they leave defeated. We were never told who delivered the shovels to Russia? Thank you Nima for inviting Col. Jacques Baud back as a guest. He is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced military strategist, tactician and intelligence analyst! His assessments of the Ukraine conflict are profound and highly accurate, giving us all a more in depth understanding of what is unfolding on the battlefield. The explanations he provided here provide many insightful details , that show great expertise and understanding, of these many complex details that shape the policies being implemented in this conflict, both by Ukraine and Russia. The West has certainly done a lousy job of arming and providing military tactics for Ukraine to use in this conflict. From Col. Baud’s description, the weapons provided were inappropriate for the conditions the Ukrainians faced on the battlefield, and the doctrinal policies taught them by NATO, were ill-advised for the conditions they would be fighting under. Clearly Ukraine was being armed by the West to weaken Russia, not to win the conflict as the West proclaimed. What a tragic loss for the people of Ukraine and their country. It is understandable that the Ukrainians feel betrayed by their Western backers, as in fact they have been! Thank you Nina for having Col. Jacques Baud back as a guest , in your wonderful podcast! He is an incredibly knowledgeable resource about this tragic conflict. We are all better informed having listened to his responses, to your thought provoking questions. Modern Warfare is not so much about an army being unbeatable in the battlefield as much as successful operational objectives. You can lose 10 tactical battles, but 1 giant operational victory makes it up. The Russian army doesn't need to be unbeatable to decisively win this war, but simply operationally capable and determined in achieving it's goals. Whether Russia should be more brutal, and try to achieve it's objectives faster, that's for the Russian General Staff to say, but considering all of the advantages that Russia possesses, it is not in a hurry. Time will tell whether they're wise or too cautious, but the end result will be the same, Victory for Russia.

Since the start of the Cold War, Russia has been studying and planning every combination of conflict. It has a certain advantage, it improves the techniques of the USSR and has preserved the officers' study system. Where the West Point cadet leaves in 9 months as an officer, the Russians leave after 4 to 6 years, depending on the level of study at their entry. The US officers leaving the service are lawyers, the Russians are engineers.

What you also need for traditional, so not guided ammo for howitzeer is accurate weather data at least every 4 hours and that up to the max hight of the ammo trajectory. Another point is if an area has been pounded with classic artillery the surface of the ground is heavily littered with extremely sharp shrapnell especially so if anti perrsonell shells are used = heavy trouble for wheel based military vehicles, the wheels are cut constantly.

Russian tanks are not only lower than Western tanks, but significantly lighter as well. The Western territory of USSR has had a lot of rivers, swamps, muddy ground. It was visible in Ukr very well, the Western tanks just cannot operate in such conditions and literally sinking in the soil...😊

How does the preparation of the Ukraine terrain by them with the support of the usa since 2014 & before play into the smo? Many cities were made into fortresses. Many lines of defense were prepared prior to the smo. Can you compare this to another military operation?

On colonial war doctrine, I've actually read "The Afghan War" by Archibald Forbes. Fought in the 1840s. The 1st of 3 wars. Archibald had been a common soldier but now a journalist reporting from the war on site. The British Generals in India hated the idea of having to go up the mountains to fight those reputedly fierce guys. A deal was made with a bought puppet-Sha (King) of Afghanistan, and Archibald cites a General commenting it, in Victorian English which is why I read it: "- Of this compact, there is nothing else to be said, than that in it the words 'Justice' and 'Peace' are applied in a manner fortunately never before encountered in the English language."

Did you even listen to the interview?? Col Baud just said he was a tank commander ... but that was the least of his achievements. His long career working for NATO means his insights are without parallel. He is the best military analyst by far, and I've followed him for 2 years on French channels. Thank you, Nima, for giving the English speaking world access to Jacques Baud's wisdom.

It is simple, Russia has a research and development base for it's military that is on sight, they are adapting and clearly defining and categorizing what they encounter, the drones, the turtle tank, the glide bombs are all improvised. Ironically, improvisation is an American and NATO military slogan that they never practice. Russia has also planned very far ahead of NATO, they used mercenaries to punch through into Ukraine, then sent in special divisions for specific tasks like storming trenches, storming villages and to surround Ukraine. The Russians know what the hell they are doing.

Even the best NATO stuff, which is their F22 and F35s, those are very high maintenance stuff i wonder how suitable that hi Tech gear is for high intensity war and so are their Abrahams tanks I am sure NATO would be able to adapt tough l much like the Russians did adapt since 2022

Couple of days ago in the senate, Gantze(R) questioned Austin on the reliability of the F35. He had to agree reluctantly that only 29% of them were flyable at any time and they were unreliable "paperweights".

Sober analysis one might expect from an officer of the Swiss Army, although it is important to remember that the Swiss have not fought a war themselves since the Sonderbundskrieg and that was a civil conflict.

Militarily, The US gave Ukraine all that it figure it needed to defeat Russia. The huge mistake in this entire matter is the US overestimated itself, and underestimated the Russians, and the world. Look, The US obviously didn't expect all this, by force, sanctions, political pressure, and influence on the governments of almost all nations, including economic and trade opportunities would do the trick. With all that, it was enough to defeat Russia and to finish it off. So, The US figured there was no need to include anything more than what they did. Militarily, politically, economically, and diplomatically, they were wrong, dead wrong.

We are closer to nuclear war than we were in 1963 cuba crisis (clock hit 23:55, today 05-06 it hits 23:58) not too late to do anything about it
