Star successor has one issue. The 2 player mode feels half asssed. There should be a way to play as two character on screen. But for some reason the second player controls a second cursor? There are two characters, why can't the second player control the other one?

Fun fact: This will be the first game to have a Japanese box cover displaying in the Western Nintendo 64 app on Nintendo Switch.

It took some digging but I found a patch that does translate the menus without the need of texture files. Easily in my top 10 favorite games

Great review. I love this series. Now as of 2022 you are able to buy a high-quality repro cart of the original Sin & Punishment for the N64 with an English translation. Highly recommend and it runs great on original N64 hardware and controls great with the N64 controller.

so, a couple of things 1- I want the contact of your dad just to send him my highscore prints, I'm desperate ok 2- about the time mechanic in the first one, it's bc of a mechanic you didn't know about, while playing the game, some enemies you kill will trigger the voice-line "get bonus" and a messge will appear on the screen, those are commanders, commanders are strong enemies that appear in parts of the stage, they can have a health bar or not, depends a lot but most of them do, and killing them refills your time to 99 again, so if you can kill all commanders that appear on screen, you'll never run out of time, but saying is easier than doing, that's why the time bonus exist, it is a punishing feature, but not too punishing imo, I completely agree with their vision regarding that, and also, on the 2nd one, you gain a bonus by killing a "boss" enemy with 1 second left on the timer, a really big bonus 3- you where playing on easy, I'm not assuming, I know for a fact, I really recommend playing it on normal and eventually on hard, it's part of the reason you didn't found this game to be challenging, believe me, hard is HARD, and normal will took you a good amount of tries before consistently finishing it in 1 credit, just now I'm doing it consistently, with 15 runs on my back more or less

now regarding the story We begin with earth being overly populated, thanks to that a couple of scientists created artificial animals with the sole purpose of breeding and killing, but out of nowhere these creatures mutated into what's now called "Ruffians" and started attacking humans, Japan saw how they weren't able to stop these ruffians alone and how they could turn into a world wide threat, so they asked help from the USA, the USA sends a military group know as the "Armed Volunteers" which isn't a name for a military organization, sounds more like civilians grabbing guns and blazing shit, but whatever, the armed volunteers come to Japan's aid, but bc they are Americans, and they are essentially doing a holy war, they start doing whatever the fuck they please, destroying buildings, killing people and such, thanks to that a new group is formed in Japan, the Saviors, a group formed and led by Achi, a strange girl with unexplainable powers, the members of this group are japanese people who got fed up with the Armed Volunteers and are now trying to end their group and the war against the Ruffians with the help of Achi and her blood, so the scenario so far is a full blow war on Japan between 3 sides, the ruffians, the armed volunteers and the saviors, the very first intro cutscene that shows a group of "rebels" dying is actually one of the very last groups of the Saviors, Achi learns about their death thanks to her telepathy and tells this to Airan Jo and Saki Amamiya (that was sleeping and btw, the very first stage is his "recurring dream of fighting ruffians"), the 3 of them are from the highest rank in the group, with Achi being the leader, both Saki and Airan where originally normal japanese civilians that died from unspecified fatal attacks from either the ruffians or the armed volunteers, but got revived thanks to Achi and her blood, not only fully reviving but also getting a massive boost in reaction time, speed, strength and etc, turning into super humans essentially, their objective right now is to fled Japan with one of the Armed Volunteers's ship, probably to go to USA but that's actually not specified iirc, that's the first stage where they run through the city, kill some ruffians, kill a lot of armed volunteers and enter a building, the next stage is Airan hacking an elevator to force it to work while Saki fends off against both armed volunteers and ruffians, while at the same time, Brad and Kashua, both high ranking members of the Armed Volunteers are trying to capture Radan for unspecified reasons (for now at least), with Kashua being a bait, the stage ends and Saki's group finds a ship to fled Japan, but Radan decides to attack their ship, forcing Saki to be left behind and deal with Radan, while Kashua finally reached Radan to capture it, funnily enough, killing Radan wasn't Saki's objective at all, he just wanted to fled Japan, so everything that happens in 1-2 and 1-3 was Radan's fault, anyway, Saki kills Radan causing Kashua to get super pissed and start bleeding, she then teleports a shit ton of armed volunteers soldiers to attack Saki, showing how she also has strange powers, all the while Brad is advising Kashua to not do that, she doesn't listen and after Saki putting another 50+ kills on his belt, Kashua loses control and turns into a form that resembles a Ruffian, with the ENTIRETY OF THE CITY BEING FLUD WITH HER BLOOD, I'M NOT KIDDING, THAT PART OF JAPAN JUST TURNS RED THANKS TO THAT, EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING THERE FUCKING DIED, anyway, Achi prompts Saki to do the same, also turning into a form resembling a Ruffian, after that both fight till death, with Saki winning, and Japan fucked, after that Airan tries to talk to Saki but to no avail, as Achi says, Saki lost his humanity, he has no recollections of anyone or anything, he is just a beast working exclusively on instinct, so he tries to attack both Airan and Achi, but the latter teleports both of them before they got crushed, they reach one of the armed volunteers's final ships, the last of the group trying to kill Saki in his "Ruffian form" at the command of Brad, with his commander begging him to get of of Japan bc it was "hopeless", Brad is seem with 2 girls (which I have a theory of what it represents later on) and a small rat kyuubey from madoka looking thingy talking to him, he announces at the radio to all ships to kill the giant ruffian before he assimilates with other ruffians and eventually destroy mankind, Airan hears about that and coincidentally, she's in the same ship as him, so she goes for the kill, while Leda, the rat thingy, tries her hardest to stop her progress, while she's fighting the ship's defense mechanisms, she founds and fights some ruffians, strange (I'll explain in a bit), she finally reaches Brad, finally starting their fight, she proceeds to kill Leda before throwing Brad out of the window, Airan mentions that he also had strange powers like Kashua, after that Brad explains that his "strange powers" actually came from Achi, and Achi complements saying she didn't expect him to "make friends" by passing his blood, this is when we learn that both Kashua, Leda and even Radan where actually regular people who got experimented with his blood before turning into what they turned, Radan apparently was the first, losing her humanity and being trapped in her ruffian form, Leda being the second one and maintaining her humanity but being also trapped in her ruffian form, and lastly Kashua who maintained both her humanity and human form, btw, Brad is 17 years old, Airan and Saki 16, Kashua 16, Radan around that too, and Leda is 6-8, IT'S DESCRIBED THAT SHE LITERALLY FIGHTS FOR BRAD'S ATTENTION, that's just fucking disgusting, she lost her humanity and was reduced to no more than a pet, and she's jealous of Kashua bc Brad pays more attention to her, ok, let's kill him (before that, about the 2 girls in the first cutscene on 2-1, my theory is that this is Brad's view of both Radan and Kashua's deaths, he just sees their spirits, hopefully haunting him, also, the ruffians on the ship, while never confirmed, my best guess is that they are armed volunteers's volunteers for Brad's experiments), and now it's the longest and coolest stage in the whole game, 2-2, a stage where you single handedly kills every last Armed Volunteer while Achi's flying you all over the place with a piece of ground from Brad's "office(?)", nothing substantial happens in this stage, you just kill all sorts of Armed Volunteer tech (with a really funny cutscene in the middle of Achi saying "they are crying, they are crying on Brad's name ha ha ha" which feels super personal, and it is) until you finally reach Brad and kill him, and instead of him taking his ruffian form to fight against Airan, he decides to actually die definitively, something something pride, not wanting to be seen as a monster, keeping his image of a hero and etc, to the world he was a hero, to me an asshole, fuck Brad, anyway no time to waste, time to kill A FUCKING RAILGUN, ARE YOU SERIOUS, THIS GAME IS TOO FUCKING AWESOME, anyway, you survive it, you destroy it if you're good enough (fun fact, this railgun is the central commander of the stage, the last boss before you end a stage and gain the points from it, and you can miss this central commander, you actually just need to sword juuuuust before the end of the final corridor, that's the only way to explode it and get the central commander bonus), and now you're fighting against a railgun's bullet, nothing happens here too;

I had to cut the comment in half, never knew that youtube had a character limit ... now you're face to face to Saki, and Achi says that to restore his human form, he needs a connection on his heart, and instead of it being symbolical and such, she means literally, practically forcing Airan to shoot Saki's head to later cut his torso and reach his heart, Airan declines and Achi keeps forcing, until we change the scenary to a crying child on a train infested with Ruffians, Airan thinks that Achi teleported her to "Long Island, America, oh Achi why did you to this to meeeeee", she then decides to protect the child and keep moving from wagon to wagon until she reaches the conductor, eventually she learns that she's in 2017, 10 years in the future, we are at the last defense of the world against Saki's forces (which btw, took 10 years to almost win the war, wtf?), and the crying child is actually her son with Saki, Isa Amamiya, now how the fuck the kid didn't find strange that her MOTHER didn't know his NAME, or didn't recognize him, or better yet, when they had the time to FUCK is beyond me, anyway, she reaches Saki, shoots his head and breaks the illusion, yes, this was an illusion made by Achi to convince her to save Saki through any unsavory means, may also explain all inconsistencies I just said, still doesn't explain how Achi knows about the kid, anywaaaaaay now it's time for the biggest exposition ever in under 3 minutes of cutscene, it is reveled that Achi started this war by mutating the artificial animals (you may want to scroll up), confirming that yes, ruffian is her blood, with the objective of creating a simulated war, all of this for the pupose of training mankind, or specifically a champion, to fight against "the enemy" it is also confirmed to Achi is an alien, and that her enemy would target earth, hence why she did all that, and before Saki and Airan, Brad was her champion, but instead of being a good boy, he decided to betray her and try to achieve the same through his own means, he proceeded to either create or enter the Armed Volunteers and do Ruffian experiments to create an army and fight "The Enemy", Achi seeing how Brad betrayed her and the Armed Volunteers where completely FUCKING Japan, she took the opportunity to create the Saviors, making Saki essentially Brad 2, but with waaaay less transparency, except up until now for reasons I guess, after this exposition extravaganza, she spartan kick Airan to Saki's literal open heart, again, can't stress this enough, it is HIS LITERAL HEART, so that Saki could regain his humanity and turn into the perfect human to fight the enemy, that being her final goal, Saki wakes up, and in a desperate situation, teleports to Hokkaido, the lair of the Ruffians, Airan while this is dreaming in a warm place, again, Saki's heart, until she wakes up in a beach with Saki in a hybrid form of human and Ruffian, Ruffians start attacking them and Saki protects Airan until they reach a place to rest (this entire game happened in under 3 hours so far just to remind) after that they joke a little about Saki's condition, and Saki hears a ruffian outside, letting Airan unguarded, Achi kidnaps her, Saki goes after her, and welcome to the hardest stage, 3-3, good luck, after Saki fight a Godzilla, a fucking laser snake and 33 mother fucking commanders, he reaches Achi, she says that Saki is refusing to accept Airan, hence why he looks like a hybrid, but Saki refutes with one of the best lines in this game, no joke, "I'm not refusing her. Obviously our hearts are growing closer. But in our hearts there is still fear... There is still doubt... There is still places and feelings that can't be opened yet. We need more time to fully accept one another." showing Achi that human relationships are way more complex than she could expect, after this beautiful dialogue, Saki falcon punches the kid, holds Airan, says my favorite like in this entire game "will you hold onto my heart?" And turns into his Ruffian form to fight against Achi, that does the same showing her "true form", A FUCKING EARTH, I SWEAR, TREASURE LOVES GAINAX, BC THIS SHIT IS LITERALLY A GAINAX ENDING, anyway, the idea behind that is that Achi would destroy and replace the old Earth, forcing everyone to live in her, however the fuck that would work, and crowning Saki as the new world's leader, a respected and feared figured of idolatrism, to further prepare him against the enemy, Saki instead chooses to fight for his Earth "I understand, I'm of THIS planet" (cheesy but I love it), kills Achi's form, allegedly, don't worry about it, and finally the game ends, Saki and Airan are left to wonder on what's left of Japan, wondering what they'll do next, Saki planning to be a police officer killing Ruffians, and eventually fucking to have Isa, that's actually a dialogue, there's a N64 game where characters directly imply they'll fuck later, I love this game, lastly Achi appears, saying that eventually the "Old Earth" would die, no matter what Saki and Airan try to do, even without her influence, the enemy would appear, and Saki would lose, but there's still a chance, Isa Amamiya, the one who carries her full blood, may be her last hope (and he's the main character of the sequel sooooo), finally ending Glass Soldier... I mean, Sin and Punishment Phew, that was a ride, it's easily one of my favorite games of all time, I keep this entire story rent free in my head, and as crazy and stupid and silly as it is, exposition extravaganza and all, I can't help but absolutely love it

You know I actually didn’t like Kachi’s semi lock-on mechanic thing either, so when I found out there was a way to alternate their control schemes later (which also changes their shirt color and such, you had to beat the game first I believe), Kachi became so much more fun to play with again!

What do you mean by not deep and complex? They definitely have complexity on the harder difficulties or going for high scores.
@TrashorTreasure4 жыл бұрын
Sure, but not everybody’s gonna try the harder difficulties, and as for the gameplay, there’s not much to it aside from point, shoot, and occasionally melee strike. That’s not a bad thing though. They’re still good arcade fun.
