____________
Is the SONY ZV1 Still Worth it in 2024 & Beyond
Now that the zv1-f is out and the Google Pixel 7 or the iphone 14, and every other point and shoot on the market is at our disposal as well as a ridiculous amount of mirrorless cameras to choose from… is the Sony ZV-1 still a good purchase?
So why do I reach for my ZV1 over my other cameras or my phone even… and will I be picking up the new Sony ZV-1f, the fixed focal length little brother to this guy? Well, I have an unexpected answer to that question and some surprising comparisons from my high-end cameras to this one, and 8 clear-cut reasons that will answer…
Why I Still Reach for My Sony ZV1!

Very nice video😀! I find the final shots at the end very telling…the A7c video is much more stable than the Zf-1. Any comment on that? Seems the zf1 needs a gimbal for stability.

Thank you...and yes, I completely agree. The stabilization is the main problem with most cameras within this price range, even my A7C... However, Sony gives supplies you with a free stabilization software called Catalyst Browse, that is actually easy to use. I've been bouncing between getting another lens for my FX30 or getting a vlog / b-cam / run n gun camera. After seeing the great colors in your video, I'm leaning towards the ZV-1. Having a compact camera that can capture great colors straight out of camera is a great choice. I've also watched your video on the A7Cii. And I'm feeling the same way. I had the A7C once and I really liked it. So, I'm definitely keep my eyes peeled for the release of the A7Cii. I've also subscribed to your channel so I can see what your experience will be like with it as well.
@BrianCatalano

I really appreciate that... Thank you! I have to say, now that I currently own the fx3, a7c, zv-e1, and zv1 (I need to sell at least one of them), and the form factor of the zv1 makes that camera the one I'm least likely to get rid of. It's crazy how good it is for how small it is. So I often would travel with my A7C and could pack my ZV1 right next to it in my sling and it took up very little extra space. Great to have an a and b travel kit. Now, I travel with my ZV-E1 and zv1. This has become my new favorite combo! I really love ZV-E1, so I will always recommend it for people who are also considering the A7C... Or A7Cii. Now if the A7Cii gets the dynamic stabilization, I will probably sell the ZV-E1 for it... as it may be my perfect camera, so I'm looking forward to its announcement, getting my hands on it, and reporting here about it. Long story short, the FX30 and the zv1, if you really are in need of a b-cam, will also be a phenomenal camera combo. Really my only complaint with zv1 is the stabilization and focal range, but both can be fixed (with a wide angle adapter and by using Catalyst Browse). I also wish it had 10bit color, but you can't have everything... I guess. Hope that helps...and thanks again!

This is a really well-presented and intelligent review that truly stands out from the crowd. Although I appreciate it's not really a 'review' per se - more a checklist of points about the ZV-1 you think people are not fully appreciating or missing the point of entirely. Those with some idea of what they're looking for and why will thoroughly appreciate the salient points you cover about this camera with such fluidity and good sense. For example, as my phone has a 23mm lens and I have a 100mm on my DLSR I already know I'm in the market for something 'in-between' with the flexibility of a 24-70mm lens, which renders most other YT videos screaming "What the BEST compact camera?" completely useless as they try to compare 10 different cameras with 10 totally different focal lengths, some fixed, some zoom! For me anyway, the focal length and max aperture of the lens should be that starting point of every camera review - often it's the last or not mentioned at all! I come from a photography background focal length and f-stops really matter - I guess most vloggers making video reviews for each other (lol!) just don't care and just want whatever everyone else has. Also, very few reviews really take the time and trouble to discuss the built-in sound either - something you do really well here as well. I'm a sound-engineer - so again, this stuff matters to me. Thanks again. Subscribed.

I wanted to love the ZV1 but had overheating issues with it (set on high) poor battery life and tricky to get the lens back to a very specific mm position without being able to manually focus (maybe some setting allows you to manually select this?).
@BrianCatalano

I'm sorry to hear that... I definitely can see how the battery life and difficulty setting manual focus is as you have to customize the dials to be able to do that but it's almost not worth it. However, I've never had overheating issues... So I'm wondering if you have a camera that needs repair or some other issue like third party battery or bad memory card could be the problem. Yet, I have a really cheap memory card and third party batteries in it and again no issues for me. Hmmm?

I’ve had the zv-1 for 1 and half years. I’ve had a few issues with it , sometimes it’s hunting for focus and image stabilization . If it had image stabilization that was usable it would beat the comp hands down ! You end up having to do fix image stabilization in FCP. I understand the EV-10 is not much better. Whilst it’s not weather sealed it can withstand getting rained on. For photography it’s also a really useful camera.
@BrianCatalano

I completely agree with that, and it's true, the zv-e10 isn't any better with stabilization, the a7c and 4, are only slightly better, and the fx3 is decent, but it the biggest issue I have with Sony's, but frankly it's sort of an issue with all non action cameras. I do like the m2 crane gimbal, but that does defeat the purpose of the compact size... So I think you're right, when you know its limitations, you probably can enjoy the camera more for what it can do...which is surprisingly a lot!

I picked a Zhiyun Crane V2 gimbal for 75$ second hand off of facebook marketplace. I see them for sale all the time around 100$. Matched with the ZV-1 its amazingly good. I don't use in camera stabilization at all or in post. Brian is definitely right that most Sony cameras have terrible in camera stabilization so its not just the ZV-1. I also had a problem with focus breathing. I have found that if you turn the AF drive speed to normal instead of fast and the AF tracking sensor to responsive instead of standard it mostly eliminates that problem. Instead of rapid hunting its more of a slower smooth transition into focus that looks more cinematic.

Could you do a video explaining the advantages, if any, of using the ZV-1 vs a phone (such as the latest iPhone, Samsung etc) for new content creators like me (who aren’t as familiar yet with SS, ISO, S-LOG etc). I’m trying to figure out if the next upgrade from a phone is the ZV-1 or ZV-E10, or if the bigger improvement will be the A7C and FX-30 etc. The attraction for me for the ZV-1 is that it seems as simple and easy to use as a phone. But I don’t know if there’ll be an improvement in video quality or the kind of shots I can take. Is it shooting in log? Would appreciate this greatly.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
That's a great question and worthy of a video and will definitely consider it... Yet, what I can say briefly is that if I were you, I would get the zv1 as it's substantially a better image than a phone and way more versatile because of the lens...and you get real depth of field as compared to software generated. It's also a great way to learn how to use a "real" camera... and it's portable. You could dive right into getting a Sony A7C, but it's a much more costly experiment but still relatively the same learning curve. Sony menus can be difficult but first putting it in auto and tinkering around, you can learn it fairly quickly. My wife makes content on her iPhone 13, and it's a nightmare trying to edit the files and get enough light into the sensor. I should gift her my ZV1, but I love it too much.

Good video. In real terms, how long will the battery last when shooting video while walking around on vacation? How many spare batteries do I need to carry each day (as I don't want to have to keep returning to hotel room to charge the battery)?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
That's a great question, and I think the battery life depends on a few variables, but I imagine you're like me, shooting in 4k in intervals (not keeping it running) then it will last you a few hours. I have three extra batteries which were honestly so cheap and came with a three charging station, and they are all so small that you could fit a dozen in your pocket. So in total I have four with me at all time on vacation and am not worried about losing juice...more filling up a memory card (I recommend a 128g or 64g v30 card). Brian, well…I just picked up a new (open box missing dead cat & cable) Sony ZV-1 for $ 499 yesterday. Ya think I did good ? Was going crazy trying to decide. Battery life, wide angle, usb-c etc… I decided the ZV-1 for the price of the ZV-1f gave me options Sony’s latest offering didn’t have. While the ZV e-10 is tempting, I think this will be realistically the $weet spot for a retired History teacher making updates on the road with the dog & trailer for my family. Thanks for the great videos. It is appreciated. AND anything more you can add for those of us in the ZV-1 world will certainly be valued. Hey, I have my fingers crossed about Sony firmware updates. I'm legitimately excited for you and that's a great deal! I bought mine used for $550 with no dead cat either... And I'm always contemplating getting the zv-e10 as it's such a great deal too. Yet, being able to pocket the zv1 with that zoom range versatility is better than it should be. The ZV1-F has too many limitations for me, but I could imagine it would be great for others! I have a color grading tutorial that I just did, a custom picture profile video, and an audio video for the Zv1 (with some of my other cameras too as comparison)... All within the last few months. I definitely will continue to make more zv1 content though! As for firmware updates, I really don't see it in the cards, but I could be wrong. Sony is very slow and strange with how they dole out or don't firmware updates. I think the software is pretty maxed out for what it is capable of doing. Great question! I think the zv1 is significantly better than the iphone 14 at taking portraits or landscape pictures. However, the caveat is it's significantly harder to produce those better images. Yet, it is possible to learn quickly how to take better shots and learn lighting if you're motivated. My suggestion though if you really want to take better pictures, is get the Sony ZV-E10, which is about the same price for the body and then either buy the kit lens or invest in a good and fast portrait lens... The bigger sensor will allow you to get much better pictures with more depth of field, making it look more professional...and for not a lot more money. Hope that helps!

Yes, my whole review of the zv1 where it's indicated was either all shot on the zv1 or my talking head portions were shot on the Sony A7C. Yes, I love my GoPro too for how stable the hyper-smooth mode is! Yet, what action cams gain in stability they lose in image quality, lowlight performance, and ability to capture depth of field. In a perfect world somebody would combine the two... However, check out my most recent video, Sony gives you a free app that stabilizes your footage called Catalyst Browse... It really helps me decide whether to go with the Zv-1 or another model or brand I had two quick questions, in case anyone can help me, please: Given that it's a 2020 release, I was wondering: Is the Zv-1 still being produced? As in, it hasn't been discontinued yet, right? Like I can still get a new one of these right from the factory? Another question: How can I transfer the files from the camera to my laptop, which only has USB -c ports (a MacBook air m1), and I have a hub which doesn't have a micro USB port... What kind of adaptor can I get to transfer the files?

I'm looking for an affordable point and shoot for concerts. I want to be able to take stills and videos. I'm a beginner and I really don't know what I am doing yet. I came across this camera because I was looking at used Sony px-100 vi. I have issues with my iPhone 13 Pro taking decent pics and videos of concerts because of the lights, movement and whatnot. @BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
That's a very good and difficult question because it's an extremely difficult environment for a point and shoot or a phone because both the Sony ZV1 and the rx-100 are one inch sensors, so they are not great in lowlight. However, they will both be generally better than the phone. The zv1's advantages will be better autofocus, better video, better picture profiles and a brighter lens... so slightly better lowlight performance. The rx100, has a much more versatile zoom lens, so probably works well in whatever seat you are in at a concert. However, the Sony ZV-E10 with a zoom lens of like 55-100mm would be a better option because it has an even bigger, APSC, sized sensor. Usually the bigger the sensor the better, especially for shooting at night. Yet, then you have to pay more for a better lens. I wish you could rent each of these cameras and test them out yourself because it's hard to describe completely what your limitations will be without knowing what the precise conditions are and what is the exact end result you are looking for... But I might lean towards the rx-100 just for the telephoto zoom lens. I apologize if that wasn't as helpful as you might need! Let me know what you decide on...

Not worth it, unless you want to vloging only, but for this reason a good action camera is maybe a better choice. The main reasons: the ZV-1 has a weak battery, the optics are not wide enough, the image stabilizer is not very robust, the telescopic opening and closing optics lead to mechanical failure over time.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
That's a fair critique and perspective... I own both a GoPro and this and as soon as I bought the zv-1, I stopped using the action cam except for using it for underwater or pov shots. The image quality is leaps ahead on the zv1 but you're right, the stabilization is not great nor is the focal range wide enough. I would say the zv1ii solves a lot of those issues, but it's still limited by the small sensor size. I still use it though because I can pocket it and it's far better than my phone, but would not recommend this for somebody who does want to take videography more seriously.

I have had the Sony ZV-1 now for about two and a half years. I bought it when covid was rapid and nothing was in stock in store. I had a 1000$ budget and settled on this camera from the great reviews and features it as. It was also the very first real camera i bought. I have no regrets about this cameras capability and it truly is a highly capable camera. I have been trying to decide what i want to step up to as my next camera. I for sure love Sony cameras and will stay with them. But would like a headphone jack, a type C usb port, interchangeable lenses and i feel i would like 10 bit instead of 8. The ZV-E10 ticks most of those boxes as it has all those features and even steps up in megapixels and sensor size. But it does lack 8 bit video which i feel most people say you need for truly professional quality grading in post. Whats your thoughts on 8 bit vs 10 bit capabilities and the advantages of a camera that actually shoots raw?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
That's a great question and it does depend on your budget. The zv-e10 is a massive step up in some ways from the zv1 as is the Sony a7c from the zv-e10. And then you have the a74 which is exponentially better because of the 10bit and the 33mp sensor. The zv-e10 with the sigma 16 f1.4 is all in $900 and is a world apart from the zv1 image wise. Yet, the a7c with an equivalent 24mm f1.8 is (second hand) $1800... And the a74 or fx30 (the cheapest 10bit cameras) with the same lens might be around $2200. However, there is news of a possible zv with a full frame sensor being announced in the coming months that may be closer to $1200 (purely speculation), so maybe it's worth waiting to see what's coming down the road. 10bit is substantially better if you can find the budget for it, so currently you have just those two cheaper options (a74 and fx30), but the A7Cii is coming out later this year and some other unknown, likely 10bit cameras. Sorry, if that's confusing... But I might just wait unless you've got the money for the a74!

I have a s22 do you think it's worth getting a camera when phone ones are so good
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
That's a great question and I suppose the answer is likely very specific for you personally... If you want to learn photography or videography... And/or want to get more serious into filmmaking, color grading, and editing then I'd say the Zv1 is a great step into that direction from the phone. The s22 can do some really interesting things with software that the Sony can't, so in some ways if you push your phone to its limit, you still could very much be a videographer with a phone. When I'm traveling, I will often take pictures with both my camera and my phone just in case... but the main advantage of a camera with a lens is getting 'real' depth of field (blurry backgrounds) and better lowlight performance. My wife is a content creator who uses her iPhone 13, and it's great but I'm recommending that if she wants to take it to the next level she should invest in a camera because, especially in video or RAW photos, the zv1 is much better. Sorry if that confuses you more, but it just depends on what you want to shoot. The majority of times, the phone is enough... until it isn't.

@BrianCatalano

@@kindsplash21 I can fully understand all that... The zv1 however does not shoot in 4k 60, to get that with any camera, you are looking at an extra $1000 (be it Canon, Sony, Lumix, Fuji). There is a full frame zv1 coming out soon that will have 4k 60, but it will be an extra $2000. Maybe just use your phone for a bit, get your workflow going and see if there's any issue that your having that would require you to upgrade. Or get the zv1 and learn that way (you'll need a few extra batteries) and see if you later want to upgrade after that to a bigger camera, and in the interim you'll have learned how to use a proper camera. That knowledge is priceless and can be generalized across higher end cameras.

@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Жыл бұрын
Yes, the battery life is not great, but it really depends on how you use the camera. If you're travelling with it and just taking clips here or there in 4k then it's ok, but I always carry 3 extra batteries (which are super cheap and tiny, like you could fit a half dozen in your pocket). Yet, if you're live streaming or shooting long intervals like a podcast, there's work arounds like connecting it to a power bank and then it will run for as big as your memory card is, roughly speaking. Now, the in camera mic is the best part, I did test it out in the video, but it also has a hot shoe so you can connect a bunch of different mics into it... Or just run a cheap shotgun mic into and plug it into the 3.5mm audio jack. My second to most recent video on my channel "Cheap Mics", I tested mics into the zv1 if you want to check it out... That's a great question and something I've constantly asked myself because my current set up is: A-cam- FX3, B-cam- ZV-E1, C-cam- A7C, & D-cam- ZV1... But I am in the process of selling my A7C and to pick up the A7CII (and then maybe sell my ZV-E1). However, the perfect B-cam, for me now, to my FX3 is the ZV-E1 because they share a sensor, but I only use my ZV-E1 in short bursts for pick-up shots in case it overheats...even though I've never had it overheat with a regular use. Yet, I really love having my FX3 rigged up and my ZV-E1 as compact as possible to take on the go. That all being said, probably the safest choice may be the FX30 because it has a fan and it will match well with the FX30, but it has worse dynamic range and rolling shutter performance. The A74 is a brilliant camera too but can also overheat but not likely in 4k 24... It may also be worth looking into a used A7s3 as it's been pretty cheap lately and it's a workhorse! As far as c-cam the zv1 is great but it does not compare well to any of the above cams... So, I'd probably say the FX30 is a great, dependable valued camera but that or the a7s3, ZVE1 and a74 would all work too and there's not a bad cam on that list! Does that make sense? However, if you're just looking to vlog, I'd look at the Pocket 3 instead or any action cam really for stability.

I just find the footage too shaky for my liking. I'd probably toss it on a gimbal.

That's completely fair... I do often use a gimbal. However, now that I started using Catalyst Browse, I will never go back. I now recommend getting a wide angle adapter and using it as it completely takes the shakes out... And it's free! Here's my test with it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWKZc5asec9ji9E

ZV1 is incredible. The ergonomics suck though.

Yes, I agree with both those takes! I keep my newer cage attached which helps immensely with ergonomics...

Long term ZV1 user here, I would no longer recommend this camera to anyone. Too frustrating and so many better alternatives available now.

I can respect that...and you are right for the most part. The zv1 has a lot of frustrating limitations. Yet, currently I see them on the used mark or discounted for under $500 and still think they are a good value and recommend the zv1 over the zv1ii. Also, now that Catalyst Browse is so easy to use, I find that a nice workaround to the lack of good stability. That being said, I can just as easily recommend an action cam for most people too in that price range. What would you recommend?

Hello. Why is there no stabe? Seems unusable for my walk-and-talk videos.

That's a fair concern and really just a technical limitation of any camera under $2 to 4k without a gimbal (unless you want an action cam like a GoPro). However, the most amazing solution is that Sony has a free stabilization operation called Catalyst Browse with if you turn off the stabilization and then run your footage through the website it was make it look like it's on a gimbal. It's free but it takes some rendering time. I should have included this in the review, but it just slipped my mind. The Panasonic S5II is probably the best/cheapest option for good in body stabilization, but you're looking at 5 times the prices with a lens... So that's why I recommend an action cam or using Catalyst Browse. Thanks for the great question!

@@BrianCatalano I asked because I had a G7X Mark II and it was decent. I have a GoPro 11 but looking for a replacement for my Canon. Thanks for the response and the website.

@Just Like Paradise my dream would be if the GoPro and zv1 had a child!! That would be ideal! You're right the g7m2 had better stabilization. Canon should make a mark 4 of that!

@@BrianCatalano so would you recommend the G7X Mark II over the ZV1? It would be my Third Canon. I wanted to get a better pocket.

@@JustLikeParadise I think between the g7mark III(3) vs the zv1, I would prefer the zv1 because the no record limits at 4k and the flip out screen and maybe more reliable autofocus... Whereas maybe the canon has slightly better stabilization, better zoom range, touch screen menu, and arguably better for photography with the built in flash. I think if you lean towards video and vlogging, the zv1 is better. If you're more into photography it might be the Canon
