Read the book, dah dah dahhh😉 Seriously there are multiple books and references to this topic going back to Victorian times. The general consensus is that the monks threw it in a pond near the monastery, but it sunk into the mud and has never been relocated. The stone of destiny was always described as Jacob's pillow making the cubic block a little uncomfortable. It was also described as being black, (possibly basalt) 🤔🙄😳

When the stone was displayed at Edinburgh Castle a few years back, the guide I asked about it's origins was emphatic that the stone was original because it was proven by archaeologists to have been quarried in the Perthshire hills! When I told her of the Egyptian princess Scotia story it suddenly became her lunch break and she quickly disappeared! 😂 Surely the big question should be, Where is the real stone? and who's hiding it, and why! Great stuff Bruce, keep them coming buddy!

One would have thought that proving that that stone had been quarried in the Perthshire hills (one would have to ask are those the Ochils, Sidlaws or Grampians...) would have been a strong indication (aka proof) that it isn't the Stone of Destiny.
@laszlokaestner57663 ай бұрын
That for me is the real question. If it s a fake (which I think is a strong possibility) where did they hide the real one? Of course the first question to answer that is who took it, as this will narrow down the options of hiding places.

I grew up in the local,its of Scone Palace and can confirm the sandstone is local to that area and found in local peoples garden walls, outbuildings and houses .Some might actually be from the ruined Abbey.On a recent visit to Scone Palace to educate my grandson on Scottish history the guide told us that there are various descriptions of the original stone but nowhere on the planet is it described as sandstone. There are medieval bale seals depicting the stone which show it needed six people to transport it and was saddle shaped with carvings.The sandstone block in Perth museum clearly shows signs of being worked on and the abandoned.This is why it is referred to as the Cludgie Stone by Scots. The coronation stone used for hundreds of years at Westminster was and is the biggest hoax and joke in history.I am sure the monarchy knew and still know this and get crowned through gritted teeth, whilst those in the know in Scotland sit and smirk.

I love this story you've told well Bruce, so thank you. I remember, probably around 1969, reading in the "Scots Magazine" an article about the concealing the Stone of Destiny in Dunsinane Castle and how a stone was discovered during repair work in the 1820s? It was taken to the British Museum where it disappeared. Ever since I've referred to it as the Stone of Scone. Possibly in that article it said that the stone was carried on two poles. Also that at some point in the history of the Scots it was at Dunstaffnage Castle. I also read that on the Royal Seals of pre 14th century Kings of Scots shows them sitting on a solid throne. I imagine those nobles saying to each other "That isna it" I have a theory who did the hiding but I'd be very interested in yours.

Bruce, you are correct in asserting that the Stone of Destiny we currently use to crown monarchs has it's own rich historical tapestry and story. However, I also agree that it is nothing more than a 13th Century version of "trigger's Broom" - unless taken totally unaware I can't image the "high heid yins" of Scotland just leaving such an important relic to be plundered. If correct that the Scottish nobility and clergy knew it was a fake then it might be worth also pondering this: If a Scottish monarch had to be crowned and gain legitimacy then did he not have to be crowned on the Stone of Destiny? Thus, is there a case for the examination of every Scottish King crowned after 1296 to have his coronation location examined? Did those in the know wheel out the "real" stone somehow for the ceremony and then hide it again? Or is there a case to examine the area beneath the floor where each monarch was crowned as placing it under the spot of coronations might have been smarter and more expedient? Or maybe there was a public ceremony and then a private one where the stone was held? Surely if we had it then we would have used it - otherwise what's the point of it in the first place? Just the musings of a couch potato Bruce but for every answer it seems to conjure another question - fascinating stuff.

The Stone of Destiny is river bed sandstone from the Lower Devonian (old red sandstone) Scone Sandstone Formation, and probably came from Quarry Mill, near Scone Palace. The intriguing aspect is that one face is particularly smoother from years of continuous use, and it's been speculated that it was actually a door step. This may add further weight to the argument that the real Stone of Destiny was swapped by monks. Perhaps the real stone is now a church door step.

As usual, Bruce, thanks for a well researched and reasonably argued piece of history. You tantalised us about the who and the where, and, hopefully, all will be revealed in a future video. The notion that Longshanks was hoodwinked by a piece of near worthless, localy quarried Devonian sandstone is very atractive. Another pointer is that the stone was significant in the Celtic church. The Celtic church was right into carving stone. It is impossible that such a stone would not be covered in Celtic Christian carvings. This would tie in with monarch seal representations. Great story and I am ordering the book. Alistair McKerarer had a great article about it in the 1950s and of course there is a place for Dunsinane it that story

In the Saturday 17 February 1951 (Yes, 1951) edition of The Scotsman newspaper there was an article written by my great-uncle, James S Richardson (formerly H.M. Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Scotland) in which he examined the seals of the pre-14th century kings of Scotland, which had representations of their enthronements, showing the throne/seat/stone. They appeared very different from the current Stone of Scone, more ornate and higher. He concluded that the stone taken by Edward's men was not the original.

I've known this story all my life, nice to see It being publicised like this. I remember years ago I think it was on a tv program, at the time the (fake) stone was returned, a story about the real one being found after a landslide on Dunsinane hill. After the landslide, someone or some people at the site of what's believed to be Macbeths castle found the entrance to a vault. Inside was a black stone "Not of this earth, meteoric or semi-metallic", along with bronze tablets/plates writing on them. Roughly translated they said something like "The sconce (shadow?) of kingdom come, until Sylphs in air carry me again to Bethel". I believe it was sent to London but went missing on route before leaving Scotland. Will be buying the book, but would love to hear you comment on who hid it.
