Nice video! The fifteenth century Valois dukes of Burgundy also adopted Saint Andrew as their patron saint and used a red, saw-toothed saltire as a banner, but it seems to be unclear why they choose Andrew and his saltire. One theory is that Duke John the Fearless choose them to honour his Scottish soldiers led by the Earl of Mar and the Earl of Douglas.

I have some very dear friends who are not Scottish at all (they’re Hazara Afghan, in fact) but loved the idea of the Highland Games I worked at as a reenactor. They never got a chance to go and have since moved very far away (New Zealand of all places), but this past Saint Andrew’s Day, they sent me a picture of their two little girls holding a Saltire they’d drawn in class; the girls had insisted on sending it to me because they remembered that my family was from Scotland. I nearly burst into tears right there in the gym, it was so sweet. 😭❤️

Great wee book to compliment this is (for me anyway) The Celtic Way of Evangelism by George G Hunter. Great reminder of how important the migration of Church, faith, learning and more came from the north and west rather than Canterbury. Just a wee setting the record out and straightening of history like Bruce does.

Years ago, I read an English language summary of a study by a Greek scholar showing how the travels of St. Andrew were possible. Very interesting how Andrew could have traveled to Scotland, Russia, India and China on established trade routes. Not necessarily proof of visiting but proof that it was possible and stories of his visits might not all be fables.

Yes. I read this too. It is plausible. Andreas was north of the Black Sea and evangelized and he may came up north to the Baltic Sea. He should have entered a trading ship and landed on scottish shores for a short time. My name is Andreas, the greek original name of the scottish saint. I have a strong inner connection to the flag.

I am the only Poe scholar (first a college fan, then as an Independent Scholar, then as a biographer) who has investigated and written of Edgar Allan Poe's Scottish Connections [2013, Foster City, Cal.]. Hervey Allan (1928) is the first to have written information into a chapter, but never cited his sources. So my investigation had to show my readers the cultural milieu of where and in which Poe inherited his intellectual and literary perspectives. In doing that, I document every footnote and source of information. Nevertheless, the PSA and the MLA expressly discount my work. My surveys of Ayrshire did not include a discussion of the Scottish flag, the Saltire, and its origins, but I did include notes on your heraldry, especially as it relates to Glencoe, in his, "The Valley of Unrest." I did not think it relative at the time. However, after watching your presentation (26 November, 3 days before the American celebration of "Saint Andrew's night,"), I realize there are some relevant and vital points that relate to Poe's psyche. You are an unpretentious authority on Scotland whose knowledge reaches me in the most fluid way, through video. I am dyslexic, and truly hate reading. So grateful for your knowledge, research, and programs. Sgt. Brill, USAF (Ret), Thailand [P.S., I have been reluctant to write of my findings on the Scottish African Slave trade in which Burns, Galt, and Poe connectionsappreciate
