I have the Long, Wide version of the Xtherm I picked up at a significant discount when the new valve version was released. It is very warm as you recognized. Something I stumbled on by accident was a way to significantly decrease the noise produced by the Xtherm. I chose to add one of Enlightened Equipment's pad "sheets" (it's really a slip cover that completely encloses the pad) to improve the feel of it against your skin when using my EE quilt. A side benefit for me is the fact it helps to keep your pad clean. I added underneath the pad a 1/8" foam pad sold by SMD and GG for slip control. I'm not certain which one of those additions to my sleep system made the difference but the noise factor was reduced to the point I don't really notice it anymore. Before those additions the noise of the pad would awaken me when I turned over. I'm a pretty sound sleeper otherwise.

I love my Nemo Tensor Insulated Wide. But I found it insufficient on snow, even with a closed cell foam pad underneath. The problem I felt was the wider surface area where it wasn't covered by a quilt or bag or blanket would get cold and that would transfer through the baffles. Also, I did not have a wide closed cell foam pad underneath so parts of the Nemo Wide was on top of snow. I switched to using the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite on top of the a closed cell foam pad. Definitely slept warmer but I really missed the comforts of the Nemo. So I purchased a Nemo Tensor Alpine mummy recently and will be using that this winter.

Completely anecdotal for me but I personally believe the surface area thing is real and isn't talked about enough. When the surface area on top of the pad is exposed to cold air that causes a battle within the baffle system. The warm air from your body in the middle of the pad is competing with the cold air that is infiltrating from the side. As a side sleeper I've also noticed that pads get colder if I lay on my side as opposed to flat on my back. Less surface area of my body touches the pad when I lay on my side as opposed to my back. I used to use the long wide versions of the neoair line because I was bothered by my arms falling off the pad. I've now switched back to the regular size after noticing the pretty substantial difference in warmth. This is just from my experience.
@BackcountryExposure3 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with you. There have been trips where I wish I had gone with the regular on the alpine.
@ZachBrimhall2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree.
@neologian17832 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more based on my own anecdotal testing. Rectangular pads of any R-value, while more comfortable for a variety of reasons, have a lot more surface area that is not directly covered by your sleeping bag insulation and/or not in direct contact with your body for heat retention & heat transfer. This means there's a larger surface area of the pad in contact with the cold ground on the ground side, more in contact with the cold air on the sleep side...and less pad (as a ratio to those things) in contact with your body for heat capture and retention. This is all amplified the lower the air and ground temps fall. Solutions? 1. Abandon rectangular pad and gain some efficiency in a mummy shaped pad 2. Take some steps to mitigate issues noted above like using a quilt or other material to minimize the effects of the issues noted above. In my case this means using a closed cell foam pad beneath my R-2 inflatable rectangular pad AND lay unused fleece clothing between my sleeping bag and the sleeping side of the inflatable pad. This seems to give satisfactory results. 3. Go get an R-7 pad!! (which is the only solution the gear head in me finds acceptable) :-)

I bought a Thermarest XTherm a year and a half ago. It was my first lightweight air mattress. Up until that point I had used a classic Thermarest that I bought in 1996, or my wife's really thick and heavy luxury map Thermarest. I'm a side sleeper, and several years back I gave up on using my Ridgerest as I simply couldn't tolerate sleeping with that little cushion after beating up my hips with a hip belt all day. I also had given up on carrying my old school Thermarest due to its weight. Two years ago I had essentially become a hammock backpacker due to my lack of a lightweight, yet thick, pad. My Xtherm changed all of this. It is plenty thick, it's lighter that what I had been carrying over the years, and it is plenty warm. I love to camp in the winter. The colder it is, the more I want to go out and camp! The XTherm's R-value is amazing! Only my wife's really thick and heavy Thermarest has an R-Value that is slightly higher [Edit: the XTherm's R-value is actually higher than that of the Luxury Map pad!]. Yes, the XTherm is somewhat crinkly sounding, but it only does that when I roll over, and I usually slightly wake up anyway when I do that. The sound is not a deal breaker for me. However........a month ago I bought a NEMO Tensor Insulated pad. I'm an old school Thermarest fanboy, but I hate to have to say that the Tensor might have become my new NON-winter backpacking pad. As a side sleeper, I think that the pad's baffles work better.....less bouncy-rolliness. (which I believe you pointed out in a video that I watched before I bought the pad). The Tensor is a little thicker, which is nice, but I don't really notice it being any more comfortable. I really think that NEMO nailed the design of the inflation bag. It works much better than Thermarest's, and it's light enough that I actually might take it backpacking (unlike my Thermarest's). I also really like the fill/dump valve that NEMO uses. The Tensor is a touch lighter (including the fill bag). My bottom line: Yeah, I love my XTherm for cold weather use. It is comfortable, and very warm. But for somewhat warmer temps, I probably would rather use my NEMO pad.

I have had the "chip pad" for years, and bought one for my wife. I can guarantee you this...before the Xtherm, we complained about the cold nearly every trip where the temps were below freezing and only ONCE about the sound since using them. So if you value a "sound" sleep over a warm sleep, then don't buy it. If you want to be warm, and wake up without shivering, then the Xtherm is the best you can buy. I also found that when I had a lazy day on the trail, and sleep was slow to come, that I probably wasn't working hard enough during the day to be tired enough to go right to sleep. In actual use, the sound is not bothersome at all, especially once you are asleep. :)

I wonder how much the x-therm is of an upgrade over the x-lite women's! It's "only" about a point and a half more r-value, which doesn't immediately seem worth the price, especially relative to the total r-value of both of them, but honestly I was freezing in 35° weather - well dressed and with a 10° quilt! - with the x-lite... And I went out again in 20-30° weather with it with this massive overkill winter sleeping bag, and was way too hot in one side and too cold on the other all night... Kept turning over, like something in the oven you want to cook evenly! I don't suppose anyone has tried both, to compare them? (Also I wish they made a shorter women's version, because I totally believe in the surface area thing! Which I think is the reason layering a foam pad over it feels warmer than putting a foam pad under it).

Hey, this was a very unique and fun presentation. Very helpful to me. I was gathering a little more info before pulling the trigger on the NeoAir XTherm. So this was a great little confidence booster. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

I used the wide version of the NeoAir Xlite for the first time late last fall on the southern half of the AT. I was surprised how much I liked it. When deflated a little, it was comfortable and warm in 30Fs temps plus not as noisy as when fully inflated. This winter I will try the Xlite in teens and single digits on snow. If I am cold I will grudgingly (price) get the Xtherm.

I got my long & wide xtherm from moosejaw's outlet, mountain steals for $110 It weighs 17oz with the blow up bag. I consider it to be my best piece of gear. Yes it's the older style with a more difficult air valve, but it is so damn comfortable, I could care less. And those who say is too warm for all season backpacking are wrong. I've had it from 10 degrees all the way to 70 and had no problem. When you put your hand on it, you can literally feel the heat being radiated back to you! Sorcery!

My Uberlite has the old style valve and I still enjoy it when going super light.

whats the difference between this xtherm and the rectangular xtherm?
@mooseliver17723 жыл бұрын
Dumb question but need a real answer... I noticed you laid down on the "lighter colored" side of the X-Therm. We have always slept on the darker colored side and kept decently warm... Is there really a better side and if I sleep on the lighter colored side I will be WARMER? (really serious question, I feel dumb cuz I've never flipped it over to try the other side)
@BackcountryExposure3 жыл бұрын
To me it wouldn’t make sense to sleep on the darker side. The printed logo is on the top side, and the darker side is the heavier duty 70d fabric which would mean that bottom side is designed to be against the ground.
@mooseliver17723 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I will be warmer this season.

So I have two Thermarest pads. One I've had for probably 8 years Neo Trekker in wide large. It has a decent R Value and I'm not sure what it is honestly, but it is comfortable and warm enough for me in the winter. But I wanted to note I've never had a leak or a hole of any sort. Last year I bought the Uberlite and its been great so far as well. Got that in the Wide Long and no issues so far.

I have the Uberlite, Xlite, & Xtherm all in long/wide. The noise has never bothered me, but I understand how that can bother some. They do get a little less noisy over time. Even though they have identical dimensions and shape, I find the Uberlite the least comfortable, the Xlite is middle, and the Xtherm I is the most comfortable. Not sure how, but the material does make a difference for me. I am a slightly cold sleeper and always take a little more pad (R-value) than weather calls for. I also under-inflate these pads and it does make a huge difference in comfort at a slight loss of R-value. I recently purchased the Nemo Tensor in wide/regular (not the alpine version). I have only spent one night on it so far, but found it just slightly more comfortable then my under-inflated Neoair pads. Not enough comfort to make a difference. The comparable Xlite is less weight, likely warmer while under-inflated (can report back after more usage on the Tensor), and almost as comfortable while under-inflated. I did also under-inflate the Tensor, but it made less of a difference as the material has more give/stretch and the quilted baffel design has more give in the first place as well. I have the Xlite in normal dimensions as well and find it unusable. Just too small. I'm 6ft and 200 lbs. My wife uses it when I can get her to come out with me. The Xtherm is my favorite pad to date. It is so warm!

I bought Thermarest neolite xtherm and it failed before it was even field tested. I inflated it in my house and discovered that it had a puncture. I had to send it off to Thermarest in Ireland for repair at a cost to myself of £15. They tested it and discovered two punctures. I contacted Bikester whom I bought it from and they said they'd refund me. I explained that I was out other costs as well as £200 for the Mattress. They suggested a £20 refund plus other costs instead of a product return & full refund. Surely this product should survive a living room test never mind the great outdoors... I think a lot of you reviewers need to take a long hard look at yourselves.
@BackcountryExposure3 жыл бұрын
Uh okay. Your experience is far from the norm. It is always possible for a product to have a defect. Doesn’t matter what it is. To think that every single product ever produced that gets into the hands of the consumer will be perfect is just ridiculous to expect. Sounds like the company you purchased from took care of you anyway. Also, what is your last comment even supposed to mean?
@WildWestlad3 жыл бұрын
@@BackcountryExposure The post was submitted incomplete and in error. The product should reach the consumer in full functioning order. If not, then the vendor should do all in their power to correct the fault by way of replacement or full refund including costs. I have spent the best part of a month trying to correct a product fault. I've been the driver trying to correct the situation. it should be the other way around. Especially when I've laid out £200 for the product. Second point. I wasn't inferring that you were a lazy product reviewer. I was simply trying to point out that many product reviewers simply dont field test the kit they're reviewing properly. Many of us youtube followers garner a lot of our information and knowledge from folk like you. Remember, a lot of kit used for outdoor hiking and bush craft is used for primary survival, in varying climates and weather conditions.

I’m glad you mentioned the lack of comfort as a side-sleeper. I wish I had known that before I purchased the XLite. As an almost-exclusively side sleeper, I was absolutely miserable for several nights until I finally had to admit it was the pad. I would 100% recommend the Nemo Tensor or the S2S Etherlight over the XLite/XTherm for side-sleepers

I had the Neoair Xlite briefly & it was OK. I was able to exchange it by paying Cascade Designs the additional $40.00 for an XTherm, something I should have done in the first place. In addition to the noticeable higher body heat reflection, I like the thicker (70D) material on the "ground" side of the XTherm which reduces the puncture air leak problem with any thinner material used on the ground side of other brands of air mattresses. I have a loss of hearing so "noise" on the Xlite or the XTherm has never been an issue with me. Thank you for showing/demonstrating the comparison with the Nemo. I am a side sleeper, & turn from one side to the other side all night long. I don't have any quilts, I sleep comfy warm inside my Western Mountaineering Antelope (Gore Wind Stopper Outer fabric) which is rated @5º; Yes, I'm comfy warm when the atmospheric temperature is 5ºF or higher. I'm 5'3" & weigh 110#; the size of the XTherm is just right for lil ole MEeee. The "trick" is not fully inflating the XTherm but inflating it enough to keep my hips off the ground.
