In todays video in light of recent events with Ja Morant. We will be discussing the "thug image" whether it is worth portraying yourself this way not just in basketball, but in any form of entertainment. The answer may shock you. (probably not)

In the same situation as you, went from the pj's to the burbs (purely my mom's effort, I take no credit). I won't lie doe, there's deadass times I kinda think to myself that I wanna go back cuz I really don't fit in, then I go visit and rmr why we left. Kills me when I see niggas who not from that life being envious of it or trying to replicate it like that shit is something that we chose to be apart of.

I hate how it’s become “popular” to act thug. I go to a school where all the kids got a roof over thier head, at least 1 parents. And don’t have to worry about where their next meal is. I got out the hood and everyday I thank god for that. My aunties house got shot up, because they mistook her house for her neighbor’s. Luckily she was working night shift that day. Everyone I know from my town tryna get out, some even go into debt just to leave. But at my new school all the kids tryna act like their about that life. When thier actually face to face with that life. They turn their back and run

They wave their guns like they are trophies and shout their gang names out like they are degrees or acheivements of status. I think it's also a maturity thing. As a teenager you look at what the older people are doing. And you emulate it. But as you grow older. If you're smart, you start to realize that there's repercussions to the shit you do. 1 time in jail was enough for me. Decided that's not how I want to live, shits not fun. Some people don't get the memo to knock the shit off and create a good life for themselves. And thus, the cycle continues.

And I have never worn sagging pants, or talked like I'm a gangster, and all my tattoos are hidden by a t-shirt because I understand that you have to play the game no matter what but you get to minimize your involvement if you want. I'm white grew up being the only white guy and I was the only one who was actually about that life and I hated it and was relieved when I finally got sent up. As somebody who grew up in a middle class family in a middle class peaceful town, but has family that did grow up in slums, I always see guys in school always tryna be like their favourite rapper acting like thugs and im like bro you live in a coastal developed city, yo parents are literally like generic middle class parents from some sitcom, i'll have way more respect for you if you just be grateful for your life instead of tryna act like you live a hard life
@gabrielgarcia7554
@gabrielgarcia7554 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I always felt like these people from relatively safe/secure middle class lives treat rappers in the same way as children treat super heroes. It's a costume they put on to show off how much of this subculture they know. They obsess about stories that probably never happened and about a life (heavily filtered) that they really would not do well in; mentally, physically, or emotionally. However unlike children obsessed with super heroes generally they want to see themselves as "good people" however those who appropriate the rap aesthetic it is to seem tougher and harder than they really are. I think a lot of young (mostly men) go through this phase in their life as they start to enter adulthood; ultimately they want to separate from their childhood by exposing themselves to things that are really other people's trauma. I think other examples of this are the "edgy" kids who go out of their way to observe material that is explicit and shows destruction of human lives to those who volunteer under not the best of intentions to developing nations in a way that is more exploitative than actually helping anyone there. I think people generally respect others who have gone through difficult times and were able to succeed; we generally respect Allied veterans of WWII, firefighters, construction workers, people who went through engineering, law and medical school, people who were accepted into Ivy League schools or won the Nobel Prize. However for young adolescents in safe middle class areas they most likely have not faced any challenges and feel that they are not a true adult. Instead of looking for challenging things facing their community or even their own life and looking at improving the situation it is better for them to appropriate some life that they really do not know anything about in an exploitative manner that doesn't really seek to help anyone. I would have more respect if these people were actually interested in what is going on in these parts of their town, state, county, etc. and looked to actually listen to the people who lived there and worked together to make it actually a good place to live. I really do not care that these people like rap music or whatever; but it is the fact that they want to pretend to be something they really are not is what I think is not only cringey but also harmful as it separates the lived experiences of people in these situations into some costume that anyone can put on or take off.

My situation has always been weird. I live in a rough suburb in Australia where there is alot of gang violence, stabbings, armed robberies etc, although I have never claimed to be about that life most of my boys that I grew up with are and have been arrested several times. I smoke up with them and get invited to their parties every once in a while and they all fuck with me and have my back in shit. I have had a knife pulled out on me more than once and have even been chased by a bunch of drillers at 3am with one of them waving a gun around. In my area it's mostly middle easterners, pacific islanders, wogs, sudos and even regular white people😂 that are seen as dangerous and being middle eastern many people think I am apart of that shit. At the same time as me being surrounded by all that shit my life at home isn't hard and if I decided to stay at home most of the time my life would be much safer. I am seen as a good kid that hangs around with the wrong crowd at school but the truth is me and those boys have had similar upbringings

As a white boi who’s had friends of every skin color idk bro. I’ve never really understood glorifying the gang lifestyle. My experience is only tangential and the story’s I’ve heard from friends growing up in South Florida or Chicago it just sounds horrible. Dying at 18-22 doesn’t seem to make the hustle worth it. I understand that some people choose to sling but it seems people who idolize the gang lifestlye don’t understand people are actually out here dying in the street. I think my friends would rather have their brother, friend, or dad back in exchange for them to just be a regular person. People who have had no adversity in their life will seek the most meaningless tribulations and pretend that they have lived through it all, throwing away everything away just to chase that hood image meanwhile thosee who have actually lived through it will actually apreciate life for what it is

I guess the biggest reason I try to thug it out is because when you grew up bullied and pushed around you became labeled as soft and I reached a point where I trained mma and became confident and I tried to pick fights with everybody. I felt like the world had bullied me and I just wanted vengeance.

I never understood that shit lmao, i use to live in the USA in what would be considered middle class but was close to the projects and etc. But im now living in mexico and if the thug image is not worth it in the USA, then much less in mexico cuz here they will kill you, burn you alive, beat you publicly or worse if they find out you're a legitimate criminal. Thats why people (most) here don't glorify being a thug over in mexico, but if people did the same thing to criminals over there in the USA (like public beatings, setting them on fire, choppings or etc) people would be much more uncanny to acting like a thug. My point being is that acting like thug is pointless, if you wanna be respected, then be a fighter or go into the military where people won't fuck with you and you'll actually get your ass kicked to get better at combat and not resort to using guns like a bitch.

Depends on what you want , if you wanted be accepted by your peers / community as well as respected and every other positive with that then yes if acceptance by your people is worth anything to you at all. Yes there's hardships the thugs and gangstas use to face but that's hardly the case nowadays you can go ask the ogs yourself they'll tell you the same thing. The gangsta/thug image has been perceived as a " positive" image for so long that in the black community it's the pinnacle of what is seen as masculinity for a black man if you're anything else you're a square, a weirdo, a chester etc and if you are labeled along those names good luck finding any of what I mentioned above from your own people unless you accomplish something outside of yourself they see as great. Sure you have people that are in that life that had no choice but the notion that it is the majority that has no choice is false . You'd be surprised to find out how many ogs was raised in a 2 parent middle class house hold . This problem hasn't even begun to truly come to resolve because few understand the problem there's so many factors that come into play . The person that does come from that knows exactly how they'll be treated by their peers , community and people as well as other races of people who " fuck with the culture" & the person that rejects to display that image understand how they'll be treated by their peers, community/ people as well as other races who " fuck with the culture"
