Unlike some other people here in the comments, I don't mind female rappers looking hot (existing in their own body and being proud of it) or talking about sex or using the word "pussy" a lot. What I don't like is when that's all they do. If their entire career is based around their looks and they have no talent, or if the only topic their songs are ever about is sex - it just comes off as "I have no personality or anything to say, so I'm just gonna lure you in / shock you / gross you out with these sexual lyrics to get attention and sell my music and get money". Another thing is when they take their 'independent feminist I-don't-need-a-man' thing too far and come off as misandrist. I don't vibe with that. Sure, many men suck, but there are plenty out there who are great and most of them are just fine. Same thing with male rappers. If all you talk about is bitches and hos and how much pussy you're getting, I'm just out here wondering if you have an actual brain or if you only think with your dick. But I don't mind calling an individual woman you don't like a bitch in a song or the occasional dick joke, if they make sense in the context.

Cardi is the perfect example of "Don't start music because you want money", she blew up out of nowhere, released one mid album that somehow won a Scammy.... oops sorry a Grammy and then dipped, her career didn't even last 5 years because by 2021 everyone was already getting over her and tha's the price you have to pay for being untalented and hopping onto a music career, it never lasts and I don't think Cardi wanted it to last tbh because she smartly used her music career and the clout to become an imprinted Hollywood A-list celeb and most of her income is probably from Brand Deals and appearances. She might have engraved her name as a Hollywood celebrity but she will never be remembered as this Female Rapper that left a huge imppression on listeners or changed the hiphop rap game. Same for Ice Spice, Saweetie and all the new girlies who don't have an ounce of talent in their pinkies and probably can't even hold a pen, the only one who had potential is Doja Cat but sis is onto some weird shit rn, hating on her fans and all so her career is considered dead already.

I think you mean before 1981 when MTV started. There was no such thing as music videos before. There was plenty of emphasis on appearance in the '80s and '90s, but there were also very talented and innovative artists who made a very strong impression on the artists who succeeded them. As for the enormously lucrative K-pop industry, there would be 90%+ less of it if they weren't using 1980s + 1990s + early 2000s' western music as inspiration shall we say. And I'm glad they do! They use a mix of genres per song almost always including 30-60 seconds of rap. 💕

@@hollyholly3172to reply to this thread entirely- you cannot just sit there and generalize an ENTIRE genre. rap is extremely expansion, and if people took the time out of their day to try to find underground artists that have an old school flow or rap more melodically and poetically instead of complaining about the songs topping the charts they’d come to realize there’s so much more than that. take time to consider twists on rap from other cultures and languages as well, there’s so much to explore with the genre, but to simply reduce new age rap to ONLY being abt drugs, s*x, killing, etc. is just plain wrong. i understand the annoyance with a lot of these younger rappers only talking abt said topics, but i feel like ppl forget that the genre goes beyond just those artists and there are up and coming rappers that are skillful at the art form but taking a completely different direction from the top charters.

As a girl, I always get nervous when it comes to these videos, but this was a very level headed criticism and I agree with most of your points. I think this generation in general is prioritizing looks and aesthetics above talent and integrity and that’s bleeding over to all genres, not just rap or even music. It’s concerning and is shaping pop culture for the worst imo. It’s taking away opportunities from genuinely passionate and talented artists especially female artists because looks and sex appeal are integral to a women’s career in the industry right now. Hopefully as this generation grows up, we’ll start moving away from this shallow obsession and start valuing real art.

He's not wrong for not liking their message, but male rappers have always been sexy to their female audiences with the images and lifestyles they portray. Sure, they weren't publicly showing their bodies in pornography but this demographic isn't even that big to make a big deal about. Sex sells so women do have to alter their bodies or be pretty to make it in most areas but I think that says something about the industry than the kinds of women the artists are. As far as them getting into rap for the wrong reasons? When has money ever been a bad reason? These artists have been relevant names in their spheres and the media for years so far so even if they're never legends, they will eat better than most of us. I feel he is making a lot of generalizations about a selective few in an ocean of plenty, probably because of their success and visibility. Rapper aesthetic has evolved into something far more shallow so I'm not surprised this is the response we get from others joining the game. No hate to him but that's my take

@@deviousintentions1949 I agree with most of your take too. However, I disagree. I think in a field like music, I do think doing it just for money is a disingenuous reason to get into music and I wish we would platform artists who have genuine passion and talent for music. And I do think that a lot of the stress put on female artists especially black female artists’ sexiness/attractiveness is created by the industry and I don’t blame the women who profit from their beauty, I just wish the general public would stop letting beauty excuse mediocrity. I think there isn’t necessarily a problem with flaunting one’s sexuality in an age where believe it or not, it’s still looked down upon (I mean look at your own comment), but when it becomes all you can talk about then it becomes really tired. @@BunnyGxre I still disagree because sex sales/ you need the male gaze. Sure there’s people who don’t like it, but there’s more who do (I mean they still popular after with subpar music) Nikki Manaj’s built a career on her sex appeal/male gaze. Even when she’s not talking about sex she at least shaking her ass or showing her boobs. Nikki is talented but most men only liked her because of her body and she probably wouldn’t have gotten as much attention. Another example of this is Susan boil (I might be spelling that wrong) Who by beauty standards is ugly but her voice is beautiful, she couldn’t capture the male gaze so you never hear about her anymore. Same with snoh alegra She doesn’t wear revealing clothes and she is soooooo talented but she’s still a small artist with a few sleeper hits here and there. Iniko doesn’t try to a “baddie” and she finally after years got some Recognition with kings affirmations. Doechii who by western beauty standards is average looking but started showing more ass has 3 hits. All of her other songs literally have 100s of views on KZbin where she doesn’t do that. one of the important things that makes a good rapper is storytelling. If you're able to rap about may different variety of things and not just stick to one thing, then you're a talented rapper.

Exactly, we want rap to be storytelling, not a flex about things that they pretend to have, like why should we even care about what they have, like how does this touch people in anyway? The worst part of it all is that after sometime, that song just gets discarded and no one will even remember it.

Well we also have to take into account the fact that rap is majorly predominanted and listened to by men, and this means that female rappers have to have some element of attractiveness to garner support and views to their videos. There are plenty of amazing female rappers out there that aren't getting much attention because they don't have the looks or body to bring in male viewers. The truth is that plenty of rap listeners are only interested in it for the hot girls and the famous lifestyles of the boys without actually listening to their lyrical ability (after all, sometimes you just want to listen to a bop and not have to think about what's being said). So when a female is unattractive and tries to get into the mainstream through bars alone, she gets very little support whatsoever. Men need to alter their views on female rap and the beauty standard if they really want it to work. If not, we're just gonna keep getting the same old washed up stuff and it'll only be our own fault.

This category of female rap wouldn't even exist if there wasn't a high demand for it. People can call it trash all they want but yet and still they will tune in soley because she has a pretty face and a nice body. If they aren't tuning in, they'll still talk about them (this video, for instance) which still makes them relevant. If you wanted more talented female rappers in the game y'all would search for and support them, but most of you don't. Be honest, if she doesn't fit your beauty standards you wouldn't care how talented she is.

I feel like you're confusing 'female rap' with 'hot females that so happen to rap'. (at least, i imagine, in the music video space) There's a high demand for the latter, not the former. Much like how there's a high demand to watch female volleyball games, but nobody really cares who wins. That doesn't discount the people who actually are fans of female rap, it's just not a big majority. Telling them then to 'find those rappers' is pointless, you're condemning an entirely different set of people. Niche artists are niche cus of their fanbase pool. They have to expand. The artists are the ones with the burden of 'finding the fans', as unfair as that may be (and it is, the compromise to changing for a larger audience usually isn't a good one).

Not only are great female rappers being pushed aside and almost ignored by the mainstream, but also singers and dancers, who actually have talent are being pushed to the sidelines as well. Tinashe is one of those talented artists, for example. She’s able to sing and dance, but, when she was at RCA, that damn label pushed her to the sidelines and tried to turn her into something that she wasn’t. Yeah, she wasn’t gonna stand for that. So, she left back in the start of 2019, and thank God she did, because now she’s indie, and is successful in her own creative lane.👍🏻 Made it to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list last year btw.

Hey man, I just wanted to say that first off I really enjoyed the video and you earned yourself a subscriber. Second I hope you keep doing what you’re doing because it’s working. Lastly I want to say that when you get big just remember everything you worked for has payed off. Keep on moving forward dude.
