Correction ....Can the U.S. catch up With China in EV Battery Production?...

Where is Tesla, which is allegedly producing batteries without using Chinese supply chains, getting the refined graphite (to a purity of 99.995%) needed in the anodes of the batteries when China is the only supplier as far as I know. When I checked (on Google) China produces 100% of global refined graphite.

A further note - Chinese graphite refineries have recently announced that they have been successful in reducing their production costs by 40%. Another Very Notable Development - China has developed a new technology for smelting iron used in steel production that is 3600 times more efficient than the current technology.

I have no doubt USA can manufacture EV Batteries; but I don't believe US can compete in EV Batteries, even with 100% tariffs.

No discussion of the costs of building that supply chain and how expensive the resultant batteries would be? Asking the wrong questions!

Không thấy đi vào các khía cạnh thực chất của vấn đề , chỉ thấy định tính mà không thấy dữ liệu .

There is no competition, the Chinese are light years ahead.

No, the U.S. is not competing. They want to say they are but reality shows otherwise with more oil usage and no EV infrastructure. The real problem is like all technology, battery technology is not static and will continue to advance rapidly. This advancement has already hurt other legacy manufacturers like VW and all the others, which is why they are losing market share and profits. They hope tariffs will save them, but they cannot, as prices will drop with every iteration, and charging and storage capacity will increase. Another issue is no matter how much money is thrown at a company to further battery development, knowledge, and skillsets will continue to hamper future efforts. They lack the brainpower to run highly advanced equipment for profit. It's a race and they are too far behind unless they try to cheat. They hope AI will assist them moving forward. Hence the AI and quantum computing race between the U.S. and China. The U.S. is too greedy and refuses to invest properly in people and infrastructure or to negotiate trade deals with countries. The rest of the world will move on, so places like Mexico will drive more advanced cars than we will. Competitively, U.S. companies will lose as their markets abroad are shrinking to cheaper more advanced vehicles and lack of U.S. consumer purchasing power. Over the next five years, many companies will lay off workers including farmers as the rest of the world excludes us from their business transactions. This close-minded thinking with tariffs and extreme greed will have dire consequences as the pace to end Capitalism has been fast-tracked for the U.S. Protectionist measures always hurt consumers and enhances the rich profit margins, but this time it's a lose-lose situation for both.

For some reason, the importance of graphite in battery technology was completely absent in this interview. Graphite is a critical component in the anode, especially in lithium ion batteries. China produces 100% of the world’s refined graphite. Where in the world is Tesla sourcing the anodes for its batteries?

China, they have an exception from the U.S. which ends this year

@ Exemption or not, China is restricting exports of refined graphite to the US as a dual use material. Companies who buy graphite must agree not to resell it to the US. China is in a position to decide who can access graphite and who does not, just as the US can decide who has access to the SWIFT payment system and who does not. But SWIFT sanctions will be easier to circumvent than the sanctions for primary materials that China is imposing on the US

Only with robotics can USA try and get market share. But at the same time efficiency gained through robotics, every other country is doing the same. Thus only supplying own small market may be fine but to compete with a bigger country and not selling into that market is doomed to fail.

When it comes to adoption of robotics in manufacturing , the 3 leading countries are Japan, South Korea and China. The US is in 6th place behind Sweden.
