I can’t take my eyes off of it. It is positively beautiful. My father was a Carpenter who had a work shop with the most fascinating tools which I was reminded of while watching this video. He always allowed me to try to use them and did not consider them off limits when I was growing up. I could smell some of the chemicals as I saw you use them and it felt like I was there with you. My mother was an Architect who also shared her interests with me. I am a 74yr old lady living in a Condo of a gated community north of New Orleans. Thank you for sharing your gift with others and me. I went through the same process restoring an antique piano. They had painted that same ugly cream over it, and then paint it black over that. They stripped off the molding and stapled Naugahyde all over it. The saddest part is that it’s still an excellent instrument with a great sound board. Made by the Chicago Cable company, it was a Greek design and all of the decorative column pieces from the front are permanently gone. But I managed to get a decent black brown stain on it. Due to extensive paint damage, I couldn’t go with the original cherry wood color. Watching this video really brings back a lot of memories.

Never ditch the original locks, some may even hold their own value No matter how old the lock, a good smith will cut you a key, infact the older the easier (antique furniture locks are generally exceedingly simple single-lever designs or simple warded setups that pick in a minute or two)

I think it’s more about when people paint irresponsibly in ways that damage the piece or dry the wood - it shows a kind of lack of care and wastefulness that is irresponsible. At least since we have access to so much information about good ways to do it these days - I mean making mistakes is fine and there’s no need to preserve everything - I am making an 1800’s spinning wheel operational again and there are some sacrifices that must be made (needing to replace the parts with lead in them for example) but it’s important to be respectful of our resources too

Thank you for this video. I just stumbled upon it and it brought back so many childhood memories. At 76 I can still remember the smell of my grandfather’s wood working basement. I can visualize the large wooden vice he used, my job was to turn the wood handle to close it up. I think I was about six or seven when he taught me how to use a hand saw. Even though I was his only granddaughter I think he recognized my mechanical skills even at a young age. Those lessons served me well as an adult, leaving the typewriter behind I worked with my hands in many areas, wood and machine shop and even in a small foundry. Ich denke, es ist eher zweites Biedermeier, gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, also um 1870 entstanden.

Biedermeier was an early 19th century art movement from central Europe. Wikipedia says 1815 to 1848. Pieces had straight lines with curved overhanging edges at the top and often used matched burl wood as a design element. Expensive pieces had gilded trims and sometimes used ebony for detailing. I once owned a pine Biedermeier desk from Sweden that was made for a lower class market and had none of those fancy pieces except for the curved and overhanging wide top. I would say this piece, small but made of mahogany, was for a middle market.

When i was a little girl, in 1970, my mother wanted to give me a set of furniture for my bedroom like other girls had. Our neighbor was throwing away old dark furniture. All scratched and used. At night, my brother, my mother, and three year old me secretly took the garbage furniture into our garage, secret, because we did not want the neighbors to know we were poor! We painted the dresser, headboard, and a little desk she found elsewhere cream color with gold trim, just like this piece. I was a very happy little girl, with my matching suite. My grandmother sewed curtains and bedspread! About 20 years later, i am getting ready to move away. My mother and i spend afternoons in the summer sanding all the paint off the dresser, desk, and headboard, and refinishing. What were we thinking? We are horrified! Beautiful oak furniture, and we painted it! I take my beautiful antique oak furniture to my new apartment, and i still have it, years later. I fix and refinish furniture all my life, now i am pretty old, but that is how furniture got painted!

Over the years fine furniture is used, people sell it and the new buyers may not like the look of the cabinet and decide to paint it to match their decor or their style and hide scratches and dings that come with life. They think the new look is nice and live with it for more years until tastes change and they either move it to the curb or sell it in a yard sale. The fact that it was once valuable is lost. Most people don’t care who made it…..it’s not a piece of art to be polished and showcased…it’s a cabinet or a chair or an old table. Young people today look for bargains on line or in second hand shops because it’s what they can afford. Take it home and throw a coat of paint on it and use it and love it. Young neighbours of mine bought an old house with a large beautiful fireplace mantle with attached mirror all of it ornately carved and stained. His wife thought it too dark for the room and so they painted it white. Their friends all thought it looked much better. A hundred years from now new owners will gnash their teeth and wonder why someone would ruin a work of art. But that’s how life moves and so we are grateful for the restorers who can bring back the original beauty.

I have a Biedermeier that is dark cherry veneer with black trim and legs. It has the original glass and cupboard felt lining. When you look inside the lower cabinet it looks like it was made from older furniture pieces. It is over 200 years old and passed down through family. I wish I could restore it to it's original beauty.

If the stripper dries too fast before it does its job, I’ve found that adding mineral spirits helps thin it out and perform better. It also helps a lot with cleanup. For instance if the areas the stripper didn’t do a great job, adding some mineral spirits to your steel would or wire brush will help take it off more quickly. Also if you want to remove varnish and stain from hare to reach places, acetone works great.

Filling holes with wax is not repairing, its a cheap quick fix. Also using Super glue ,(Cyanoacrylate) with wood is a bad idea, it eventually breaks down and falls apart, use PVA Glue.

PARA JENNIFER Y PARANLA DE LA CAOBA. TUVE UNA RESPUESTA PARA USTEDES, PERO NO LA VALIDARÍA Y SE HA PERDIDO. VEO, SIENTO, QUE SU COMENTARIO ESTÁ REBOSANTE DE CLASISMO Y MIRA , POR DONDE, A MI NO ME GUSTA LA DIVISIÓN DE LAS PERSONAS POR CLASES. TAL VEZ ES QUE LA PERSONA QUE LO TUVO Y LO PINTÓ, NO ENTENDÍA DE ANTIGUEDADES O NO PODÍA GASTAR DINERO EN ARREGLARLO, O SIMPLEMENTE, LE DIÓ LA GANA DE PINTARLO Y PUNTO. YO DESCONOCÍA ESE ESTILO DE MUEBLES PORQUE PRIMERO HAY QUE CUBRIR LAS NECESIDADES BÁSICAS Y LUEGO, LAS FLORITURAS. USTEDES ESTARAN ACOSTUBRADAS A RESTAURAR MUEBLES Y A HACER SUYAS, LA PROFESIÓN U OFICIO DE EBANISTA. HOY, LO HE LEIDO EN INTERNET Y REALMENTE SON MUEBLES PARAVGENTE CON RENTA PERCÁPITA ALTA O PARA QUIENES SE LO PIENSAN. EL NOMBRE ALEMAN, LO DEJO Y LE LLAMARÉ, ESTILO IMPERIAL, DE LA ETAPA DEL IMPERIO ASTROHÚNGARO. VIAJANDO POR INTERNET, HE VISTO QUE TAMBIÉN SE HACEN DE MADERAS CLARAS COMO EL ABEDÚL: COMO LOS DE IKEA......... ESOS NO SECRESTAURAN, SE TIRAN CUANDO SE ROMPEN, LOW COST.. PUES , PRECISAMENTE, SE SIGUEN HACIENDO Y PARA CHINCHARLAS UN POQUITO, SE PINTAN !!!!!!!!!! OOOH, QUÉ HORROR !!!!. COMO LAS VEO TAN PIJITAS, LES DIRÉ QUE HE VISTO UNOS ESCRITORIOS DE PERSIANA, QUE SON MIS PREFERIDOS PERO YO NO PUEDO GASTARME MILES Y MILES DE EUROS , EN UNO DE ELLOS Y MÁS TAL COMO ESTÁ LA ECONOMÍA Y LOS PRECIOS DE LA COMIDA. YO NO SOY DELICADA Y APRECIO MUCHO LA MADERA, ASÍ QUE SI TUVIERAN ALGUN ESCRTITORIO ESTILO IMPERIO Y ESTUVIERAN CANSADAS DE VERLO, HAGAN UNA OBRA DE CARIDAD Y REGALENMELO. YO SÉ RESTAURARLO, NO LES IBA A QUITAR **** A SUS RESTAURADORES **** QUE PERTENECEN A *** SU GENTE****. UN SALUDO Y A VIVIR Y COMPARTIR CON LOS QUE NO TIENEN., QUE EL BUEN GUSTO NO ES EXCLUSIVO DE ALGUNA GENTE.

It worked something like this: The 1800s and early 1900s homes were dark. Lighting was gas lamps or candles. But good quality wood was easily available, so most furniture was finished as natural wood. Often the finish would darken with age, but the furniture was still in keeping with the house. By the 1950s electric lights were common in most cities and some parts (but not all) of the country. The electric lights made the inside of the house brighter, but the old dark furniture just sucked up light, and was considered an eyesore. For those that couldn't buy new furniture easily, repainting the old furniture in lighter colors was the usual thing. This cabinet seems to have been repainted moderately well. I don't see a lot of brush strokes and paint runs, and the white and gold probably worked fairly well when it was still fairly new. Now we still have bright houses, in fact rather brighter houses than the 1950s, but everything is plastic or metal, and wood is a luxury, or at least unusual. Obviously (to us) natural wood seems more elegant and exotic than painted wood, and a dark piece of furniture contrasts with all of the lighter colored plastic, and blends well with the black frame around the flat screen TV. So the now chipped, stained, and fading paint comes back off.
