Is the UK racist towards Black people?
I went out during the BLM protests to speak to Black people directly to ask if they have experienced any racism in the UK.
This was filmed in Edinburgh in Scotland, but these people have lived all over the United Kingdom and some born in Britain and Ireland.

Just to add a little spin...I live in the United states, Chicago to be exact. I'm black and was born and grew up in England. Just from general experience point of view from both sides of the Atlantic, the US system of racism is more systematic and ingrained in the very fabric of society; it seems to permeate the daily social activities of life. Whereas I remember growing up in the UK and being called every racial slur under the sun, But i'll be honest, a lot of people got some A** whooping to go with it. Racism is a international stain on mankind. Look at history, Just not skin color, but religion and ones cultural identity have all added to this problem.

Racism in the UK several decades ago was a noticeably evident issue though it's generally dwindled since then as social attitudes and better education of different cultures and ethnicities were made and is still reinforced to this day. Today the racism is more subtle but not as problematic compared to the past, and it should get better over time. That's not to dismiss any one's experience of really bad racism in the country, as it can also depend from region to region. I have a feeling we won't eliminate ethnic discrimination entirely (other than systemic discrimination in our laws and institutions), as we are probably all "racist" to some degree, even among the best of us, and it tends to be subconscious. We can't be 100% perfect. Doesn't mean we are bad, as long as we make an effort to become aware of our irrational biases and work to overcome them, and not do it intentionally. Instead just be polite, civil, kind and courteous to any creed, gender, nationality, ethnic, or religious background. It takes many generations to change attitudes. Do remember that the UK was the first to put into law the abolishing of slavery, and that is a huge deal. Work on maintaining that proud tradition of overturning those old, outdated social mores and create a more harmonious future for all our children, whatever our differences.

I've been having a lot of fun leaving silly messages on this board (some quite... risky) but at the core of thing I believe that the UK has a government that tries to be benevolent, laws that are not too harsh, police that are not brutal, a people that are (on the whole) nice enough sorts and a national religion (Anglican) that really doesn't do anything more sinful than tea and buiscuits. Though there are still... Morris Dancers... Also I'm not to keen on the French.

At 0:08 the girl mentions the group that gets the most racism. Brown people (South Asians). Get lumped as one and get called that a lot. Why would racist white people have a radar just for black people? The media doesn't state the obvious. We have all sorts of people in the UK. It's just this one group that's complaining the most and using this movement as vessel for handouts from this system. Anyone that commits crime or doesn't work hard enough will obviously get less in life. Then if you aren't that talented you'll get less too. This is basic stuff. I've seen blacks spit on a brown person and say "stupid Asian".. In an area where most the business is owned by Asians. It's not just whites that are racist.

It's actually reassuring to hear the opinions of those wonderful people in this video on the subject of racism in Scotland. As a African American I too think about broadening my horizons and spending time in Europe. I've done the 6 months in South America and had a blast. Not only did I not experience racism in Argentina and Brazil, in fact I was overwhelmed with acceptance and kindness. And because of that awesome travel experience I would like to live in one of the European countries for a few years. Scotland and Ireland both sound very interesting. And I hear the Scots are quite down to earth. I'm also considering Portugal but I was a little concerned to hear that racism might be more in your face over there. I've met so many cool people from Netherlands, Spain and Scotland here in the States while on holiday in Miami Beach and the vast majority were so agreeable. I might give it a go after this outbreak has calmed down.

Its very sad. I worked in regulatory organisation and was discriminated against during the covid times. Every other person in the organisation used the covid rules as per policy and procedures, but when it came to me, the rules were scratched and some meaningless rules picked from the internet was applied. I raised it up with our HR department and they did not investigate my manager at all and hid the whole thing under the carpet. At the end of the day you just leave. I have a legal background and really tried to apply the law but was totally ignored. when you are black in UK there is nowhere safe for a black person because even the government organisations practice discrimination. They gang up against you and give false evidence. I didn't expect that from a regulatory organisation, they are no different from racists in the street. They brag about practicing equality and diversity but only on paper.

It’s not polite to continue to ask when someone has told you what they identity as in this case the girl said she was British so to keep asking shows that you do not believe a black person can be British because you are dissatisfied with the answer given. Thats when it becomes micro aggressive and ignorant because there are many black people who have generations of family who were born and raised in Britain therefore that is what they are . You would never say that to a British born white person who’s great grandparents were Irish or German or etc .
@jeepwrangler1252
@jeepwrangler1252 3 жыл бұрын
@Jonny Rotten well black people have been migrating to the country for a very long time now , some people have three maybe more generations after their first relatives moved here so your going to say forget the last few generations that your family have lived here , they’ve help to build the country , pay their taxes ! But no your black so you have to identify being from a country your family left years and years ago ! In that case all English people need to start claiming their German , Irish and everything else only true native English people should identify that way then.

The last lady is correct. Just before the 2008 crash it's as though the ASBO ones were in and out of peoples homes in my area, whilst they were out working looking after people who do not look like them; leaving or removing things. After 2008, it's just as bad and worse, people still in and out of peoples home in my area, plus the children being used to persecute people who are working all hours GOD sends, whilst jumping through BS hoops by people pitting against you for a job they do not really want, plus the gang-stalking behaviours of those who also do not want to work. It got crazy in 2008 onwards and just before and after Brexit. Even whilst keeping your head down and getting on with things. And MANY people are talking about it all over the place. Peace

Every thing happens in the world it's the English fault. It's called good old fashioned banter, I have to admit if I had a black person on my work gang I would be afraid to say something wrong. I might be wrong but I feel black people need to take a step back and take a chill pill not everyone judges you by your colour. Depends on individual person and individual experience. As a 48 year old black man, I have never experienced anything from white America...nothing at all living in 7 states in 3 different time zones. I can go to white towns in places like Wyoming, South Dakota, Georgia, and Alabama with no problems at all (which I have done numerous times). But in the past 5-6 years, I have experienced a little profiling and discrimination from non-white immigrants (from all over). Seems like when all of the racial talk in the U.S. started heating up several years ago, immigrants started looking at black Americans in a negative way. But that's just my viewpoint and opinion....not necessarily a fact.

unemployment is a huge factor, that can make the working class against each other just because the race or the nationality. Some immigrants that came expeting jobs will go to the an ilegal solutions, because maybe they don't have the necessary skills, don't the language very well or don't know how to fiend the jobs or whatever, and then their nationality will be stereotyped. It what happens in Spain once with latinos and romanians and now is happening with senegaleses, and morrocans that haven't family in spain to help them

The issue with stereotypes is that it is not accurate. A black person and a white person, from the exact same country (I.e. South Africa), with the exact same qualifications, from the same university, will be treated differently in a western country. If a white person moves from South Africa to UK. Gets a child there. That child will not be interrogated about "where they are really from".

Boris Johnson deported the Jamaicans that were Criminal in the U.k bck to jamaica, well the majority of Carribean people or people Carribean declared are mostly Jamaicans but I don't how they feel about people of the Carribean in general or descendants of other Carribean countries though, bcuz there other Carribean countries besides Jamaica. One thing I noticed from 2 years in Aberdeen was that the Aber locals seem to say England is racist but Aberdeen aren't, but then the common racism gets just ignored.. But then also with this I know I see that the common racism is not really common per person because a large city only needs 0.1% of the people to be outside racist to have a bad racist experience or multiple in your daily life. I strongly think that 99% of UK people are very anti-racist but then the 1% makes a mistake that is put onto the whole country. I lived in Singapore for 3 months and I think there it is close to maybe 20% of people are racist which is extremely more. Also nobody talks about racism like this video, in Scotland people are talking about it when it is a very small amount of people but not in Singapore..... Racism is everywhere in the world and a curse for humanity but the UK is definitely one of the best in the world for united against racism.

The main problem when you are not a dominant group like people from different cultures, different colour skin, being female, being disabled etc is that you are tempted to think 'you did this to me because I am an xyz' or people are tempted to think 'they only got that because they are xyz'. This plays out usually due to ignorance on both sides not everyone you meet will be xenophobic, racist, sexist etc. and conversely the majority of people that get the job, or the promotion earned it through hard work and not based on a disability or skin colour. The only way we can solve this and rather than see each other as skin colours or genders is to treat people as individuals.

@@sib4895 interracial relationships are relatively uncommon, the biggest threat to the native population is not interracial relationships but mass importation of foreign people who tend to have far more children than us. Felt bad by listening to some conversations. Culture, personal liking, etc should not become a criterion to judge a person. But it is not only people of Africa who are discriminated. I have heard that white people are most preferred for any promotions in the UK. People of other races also face discrimination.

If you're the minority, unfortunately in most cases people will find something to not like about you, it can be skin pigmentation, it can be culture anything that seems different ad infinitum. As European majority populations go the narrative is always of intolerance and racism, generally because of historical incidents, that are casually forced upon people who had nothing to do with those historical injustices. if you go elsewhere in the world and youre european you can and will be discriminated against if the minority, just the same as if your African or other. There is nothing evil or particularly special about European skin, we all have African heritage at some point. This very humans trait actually makes us more alike in our want to be more different, tribal, nationalistic xenophobic even it's not intrinsic to European natives. However to abstract that because there are individuals who are a racist in the country we should conflate that the country is racist is ridiculous and dangerous especially when asking individuals and not looking at systems or functions of governance. Asking random people 0.0001% of the population is not going to get you a truthful answer, it will I pose a false narrative that lacks scope and integrity, but that is the point. Lastly why is racism seen as white against black only, this 1 dimensional fixed narrative is the reason there has been a resurgence in division amongst populations. People should try living in other parts of the world to put into context how racism exists across abroader global and local spectrum as a whole so to then establish what racism might be or not and how prevalent it is in the UK.

But they remind us things like "Oh yeah. Traditions and Stuff". We watch them for a little bit and we carry on with our shopping...
