Also… WOW about the demo who loved Diana. As a first Gen of Nigerian parents… my MOTHER was so invested in Princess Diana! The day of the accident all the TVs in the house stayed on it and my mom was ALREADY grieving having assumed the Family… y’know. Even before her passing was reported! Nish knows my mother better than I do, Lol!

German fan here. I learnt about you through Pod save America. I'm always interested in what's happening in the UK since I've been to your country more than a dozen times since I was 15 (England, Scotland and Wales). Now I'm 60! What a brilliant first episode. Love your sense of humour and the guests you brought on. So excited for the next episode! I wish Brexit hadn't happened (because of all those lies) and also for change in favour of a Labour government as well as reforms for the monarchy and the abolition of the House of Lords. I guess getting rid of the monarchy is unrealistic at the moment. Too many people of my generation and older would be opposed. This is just an outside view, of course. I'll just say that our experience in Germany with an elected head of state is a good one and they've done a decent job over the last decades. They are not elected by the people but by an assembly called the "Federal Convention". Anyway, good luck with your podcast. I hope that a lot of people in the UK will watch and listen! 🤞

American here who has been following UK politics closely for years but in the last 2 or 3 I've started learning more about other Euro countries. Been super interested in Germany's system, especially because it's a "defensive democracy". The election process has been a bit confusing to learn but slowly understanding the nuances and it honestly does seem to have processes built in that make the country less vulnerable to some of the things that have weakened US and UK democracy recently. Anyway it's really cool seeing so many people from across the world (or at least the NATO world lol) and I'm super excited for more episodes and interacting with people in the comments! 🇺🇸❤️🇩🇪❤️🇬🇧

@@sempressfi Hello! Thanks for being open and curious about Europe. I think because Germany got humbled by its defeat in WW2 there was a chance to start anew. So we have a modern constitution based on the endeavour to avoid the failures of the past. If you're interested you'll get some very profound and nuanced information through Ashley from the "Black forest family", for instance about the protest culture in Germany.

the only thing that saves British politics is the satire. try some of the radio programmes, Radio 4 still breaks the mould with good satire, even if the news itself is rubbish and unreliable. The News Quiz. The Now Show. Or Scottish radio programmes. Frankie Boyle, you need a thick skin to cope with him but he is v insightful. Breaking the News.

Or perhaps the trans lobby in the UK went waaaaayyyy too far and caused a huge backlash against itself? Most sensible people were absolutely fine with trans folk - live and let live etc. - until the TRAs started infringing on *other people's rights* and theatening them if they didn't toe the line.

My immediate reaction when Clive describes the monarchy exemptions as "un-British" was almost angry confusion, when surely it's currently and historically extremely British. But equally historically accurate would be general public objecting to the inequality and liberties taken by the monarchy (and doing something about it). I did enjoy his next few remarks addressing a need for the culture to change. Does there need to be some sort of general consensus for what "British Culture" will look like post monarchy before we make any significant changes? Does that come naturally as we move towards that position?

I would much rather get proportional representation before abolishing the monarchy. We have much bigger (more recent) examples of government failing to serve the public that need resolving first. IMHO. But I'm still in favour of getting rid of the crown eventually.

Also, remembering that Modi is PM of India while Sunak and Braverman are doing this and especially recalling what he has overseen with the nationalist Hindu movements and what have clearly been attempts at ethnic cleansing in certain areas of the country, it makes the PM and Home Sec's conduct in some ways a bit less bewildering but also even more chilling

The 'Stop the boats' crap is like a bad acid flashback for us in Australia. Our governments used refugees as political footballs for decades and a successive line of conservative PMs (not unlike what the UK has gone through) in the last 10 years really loved the stop the boats crap and off shore detention. I can't believe the UK is crawling down the same terrible rabbit hole of shit...

It seems to be a contagious "conservative" disease in many countries. I say "conservative" because the many of the people who say that they are, are merely using that word to hide their fascism. I'm here from the U.S. and it's both scary and reassuring to find what we have in common.

For as long as they're a cash cow, I'm all for them. I also think there's value in having a head of state that's not a political figure - it strips our politicians of the ceremonial pomp that gets placed on figures where there isn't a monarchy, like the US President for instance. Leaves us with a healthy disdain for those who actually run the country.
@MrRancidity
@MrRancidity Жыл бұрын
Are they a cash cow though? If we got rid of them we'd still have all their stuff. All the palaces and jewels and crown estate properties would still exist and generate revenue. France continues to make huge tourism money from their palaces despite their monarchy being "abolished" over 200 years ago. Also I don't think the total contribution is that much in the grand scheme of things, a couple of billion to the UK economy is a drop in the ocean compared to the trillion in spending the government makes each year. Even if we erased all indirect income from the royal family it's hardly going to impact anything.

Would love to hear from bods at the Electoral Commission about the lack of fraud in UK voting and the Electoral Reform Society and the work they are doing around issues like first past the post. The flip side of migrants putting strain on public services is that public services are dependent on migrants for workers. There was a throwaway comment about all the dr's being Indian which is obviously an exaggeration but the underlying point is that we need immigration to staff our services and not just the public services.

I moved to Norway from New Zealand some 20 years ago. Learning the language and culture here, I was surprised how they arrived at their current monarchy. I thought it was a strange choice. For the most part, they are well liked, but not without drama from some members and problematic issues. The eldest daughter of the king (who will not be a monarch due to a male-only heir rule that was changed AFTER her birth) has been a source of embarrassment for some time and I think the family is regretting her lack of formal education because it's lead to her getting into some very unsavoury businesses and her current relationship with something of a conman who pedals harmful ideologies and blatant lies. But: She's been removed from duties and has no title anymore AND, she pays taxes. So, they don't still get a free ride and a big house in exchange for being quiet and fading into the crown-moulding. She's not allowed to use her title because she is engaged in commercial business pursuits that are NOT in service to the country. One might argue, quite to the contrary. She's had to do a great deal of back peddling about her magic thinking and her official page, in Norwegian, has no mention that she ran an 'angel school' and her 'clairvoyant work'. The English page is out of date. The rest of the family seems quite OK. I just thought, when Norway got its independence finally, in 1905, they'd skip the monarchy stuff. But, they went to a country that ruled over them for 400 years after the Black Death; a time they refer to as 'The 400 year night'. So, yes, if a monarchy doesn't exist, apparently Norway will go to Denmark and ask the 2nd son to come please be their king. Tradition is indeed a very strong, made-up thing.

I would love to hear them talk about how they voted for the Blair government. A leader who introduced austerity to pay for illegal wars and was a servant with no boundaries to Rupert Murdoch and many foreign interests.. I won't even mention the short lived Gordon reign... It worries me when people are locked into voting for one party, it makes it very easy to create a us and them perception. It is also becomes very easy to build the narrative of the others sides crimes are always worse than ours..
