Is The Viair 88p The Best Budget Air Compressor? Long Term Review / Test

I’ve been using my Viair 88p compressor for 2 years now on multiple rigs. Here is my input on if it’s the best budget air compressor for off-roading rigs. Also throw in a timed test from 25psi to 38psi. Hope this helps anyone looking into this compressor. If you have questions ask!

I own one of these…for a junk compressor that’s throwaway quality it’s pretty nice. Biggest problem is there’s ZERO filtration for the intake air which allows grit or dust to erode the reed valve on the cylinder. You end up with lots of blow by and eventually almost no pressure. Put a filter over the intake early on and it’ll add much life to the unit.

@@RoamWithJon thanks. The one big difference between this unit and the super cheap Chinese branded ones is that the reed valve is screwed to the piston vs staked for the off brand ones. This enables you to replace the reed with one made from a thin feeler gauge. (What erodes is the valve hole on the piston, so a slightly larger reed has To be fabbed, not hard but annoying)

@@mikepurvey5205 ... Thanks for the advice on the air filter. i assume you're replacing the black end plate (piston side) with the air filter. I don't see any commercial ones, so i take it you fabricated your own?

It's not made for off roading and every day use. This model is for road side emergencies for the rare occasion you need to plug a tire and top it off. The 300p and 400p have a filter but not going to cost you $65.

Good review. Since I didn’t hear any issues that it “failed to perform” I’ll take it as a good product. Since it did the job on your Cross Check I’d say great! The fact that it works reliably but slower on your Tacoma is also great. You may need a bigger compressor but it’s nice that it works on the larger tires. I use mine for emergency road use only and like my battery jump box I haven’t had to use it yet but it’s nice having it off the grid.

I my 88p in my rooftop box as a back up now, I pretty much only use my maxi Trac twin now which is an insane bargain if you can find one. It does all 4 tires in under 3 minutes. That being said I also recently picked up an arb twin lol doing a lot of testing between the latter two.

Ohh yah gets hot real quick. After airing up my first tire it’s already pretty hot so I usually use work gloves when handling it lol

Thanks for sharing the video. I’m curious to know if this compressor would be more than enough to inflate rear airbags for my truck, for when hauling the travel trailer in order to eliminate the sag. Any input or suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks once again.

I’m not sure to be honest. I know the compressor I’m currently using is used for air bags lol. I would contact a shop that does installs and see if this is enough of a compressor for that application

I’ve had the same one for years & it works great. Only issue is the air gauge broke very early on which is a bummer. Don’t rely on it to be accurate, always have a traditional gauge in your rig.

Mine works fine and it’s fairly inexpensive and dependable! I regularly reduce & refill my 285/70R17 from 80psi to 25 then back to 65-70psi. It’s a little slow & gets hot but it keeps on working.

It’s a great compressor, however, there are some insane compressors out there for around the same price, my maxitrac dual was 100 and it fills all 4 tires 15-36ps in less than 2 minutes lol

will this compressor work on 35" tire? my tire size is 315/70R17 on my raptor.

It’ll work, but it’ll take forever, and you’d probably have to wait half an hour or so after you fill the first two tires lol. I use this as a back up compressor now. At your tire size I’d start looking into a better more efficient compressor. Like the arb single or twin compressors, Viair 425 twin, or something of that sort. Other wise you’ll be sitting for quite some filling your tires. If you could find a Napa Maxi Trac twin or something similar they’re stupid fast and 100% cycle rate. I’ve been using mine and it fills All 4 of my 33” tires in under 3 minutes. It only cost me 100$ plus mods.

Could be a lot of things. I wouldn’t be able to tell you unless we took it apart. At this price point I think it would be more worth it to invest in a better compressor than trying to fix it lol. That being said I still use mine for smaller things like airing up my water tank or air bed.

So I’ve done all my 33” tires in like 100+ degree weather and it got to the point where it wasn’t filling the tires up. That was after running it for about 10 minutes haha. But in cooler weather I was doing two rigs at one point 33” tires

It’s been fairly reliable, I still use it once in a while. Not very fast though, and if you’re airing up bigger tires it’ll take forever.

I would say it is. In the “off-road” air compressor world something that could fill up to a 33” tire. Sub 100$’s is budget. You’re not going to go out and fill up an off-road tire with an actual budget cigarette lighter compressor cause that would take forever. Granted this is an old video, and the Maxi Trac dual compressor is hands down the best budget compressor.

Yes true, that’s what I would do. However, this is a good recommendation for someone that’s on a strict tight budget. Especially for someone that wants to try going off the pavement with out breaking bank. Also for someone running smaller tires. Would never recommend this to a person well seasoned person or a rig with bigger tires.
