How to fix your lighting in your paintings with 1 layer (Easy mode).
I came across the Windmill Principle on Twitter and wanted to give it a go.

Hi! I love your pen and ink sketches so much! Thank you for making your tutorial to begin with, it’s such an interesting principle and you illustrated it so well and I was so inspired! I’m glad you like it :D

Windmill Principle is a cool name but in the end I think it's just about contrast. DD or LL when you don't want to show something too much, DL when you want clear silhouette contrast, it's all depending on every single shape and what you wanna do, same thing with hard edge, soft edge, it's tiny design choices in painting. What I mean is, don't stick to a hard rule from a tutorial, it's flexible and adaptable to each situations!

this is something what i actually needed lol lately i've been struggling with lighting since i was going random bs with the multiply and add layers as usual (it works but time consuming) and it was hard to control it. But thanks to this video, it gave me a new idea how to approach overlay layers now

Would be interested hearing more about compo with triangles with mechanics for measurements and poses that follow it. You kinda gloss over it, but tease a few interesting roughs to indicate that some process is happening behind the scenes.

oo nice video but the colours of the subtitles kinda makes hard to read if you have youtube black mode on, its best if it was a lighter colour but you can do as you please tho. Very good editing 👍

@@Noelucc The Lighter colours worked well like the ones at: 0:34 , 0:43 , 1:12 The lighter purple 2:02 is just a tad hard to see sometimes because of the Black background for the Subtitles, while the Darker purple 0:45 is very hard to see that’s the only one I think was a problem. Also is the Subtitles background different on Light Mode?

Just FYI: Overlay, Soft Light and Hard Light are all capable of lightening and darkening in one step. I like Hard Light the most, because I feel like I have most control over it, but this is just personal preference ^^ Great Explanation though. I'll definitely try it with my next piece.

Thank you for the video! Lasso tool or hord brush might be better than soft brush to apply light and shadow, since keeping sharp edges gives interest to the piece. (I'm making observation for myself to try later, not criticizing the video)

absolutely wonderful video!! i love james gurney so much, but i find still images and text hard to interpret when it's supposed to be applied to your workflow. seeing you work on the painting using the principle was super helpful and i understood it much better! (also, phenomenal artwork, with or without the principle it's still eye-catching and alluring, which is amazing to me!)

Really like the addition of the Character name with the Cursive words that I’m assuming are describing the Look, it’s like a Fashion Magazine cover!! I feel that ending, saying words is hard sometimes 😭 Especially in videos, makes it feel so much harder for some reason. The subtitles made that moment even funnier 😆 1:22 Haitch 😮 I know some Canadians say Zed or Haitch but I learned the Zeee & Aitch, wonder why some people learn it differently.

I always stumble my words when recording lol, it's painful how a 5 min video takes a half hr to record 🥲 If I say words some words weirdly, I blame my Singaporean dad for teaching me it wrong ^^

Honestly half an hour ain’t even that bad 😅 I don’t think you’ve said any words weirdly, seems like he taught you well.

Could you make a video on thumbnail practice? I've started using thumbnails and I'm seeing rapid improvement with it, don't know why I didn't try it before. Especially because the type of art I mainly do has tons of foreshortening and limbs going out of canvas, so I had a lot of difficulty getting things right before, almost like I got it right by luck sometimes. I'd be especially interested in learning about practicing painting/color/light in thumbnails. Thank you.
